the eu summit. we turn to benjamin hall who is live in brussels. benjamin, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, todd and jillian. certainly a very busy day yet again for president biden, as you said we're waiting for him to meet the king of belgium and the prime minister before heading to the eu summit. yesterday he gave his first press conference of this trip. he was quite forceful towards president putin, said he would respond to aggression or provocation. there is some concern about the strength of his messaging. >> i'm going to make clear to president putin that there are areas where we can cooperate. if he chooses not to cooperate and acts in a way that he has in the past, relative to cyber security and some other activities, then we will respond. >> reporter: president biden though has been quite coy about what exactly he will say to president putin. we expect him to address the

poisoning of opponents, human rights abuse as well as the buildup of troops on the russia, ukrainian border. one of the he key topics will be cyber attacks that keep coming from inside russia, the colonial pipeline hack, the jbs food processing hack, we are getting a sense of pew ton's de-- putin's defense. >> we have been accused of all kinds of things, election interference, cyber attacks and so on and so forth, and not one time did they bother to produce any kind of evidence or proof. >> reporter: president biden also offering frankly a stinging rebuke of the republican party last night in the state of politics back home with many questioning if this was the time to do so. >> i think it's appropriate to say that the republican party is vastly diminished in numbers.

the leadership of the republican party is fractured. and the trump wing of the party is the bulk of the party. >> reporter: so president biden will be heading off to geneva later today ahead of that meeting with vladimir putin. axios is reporting he put together a group of russia experts to help him prep for that, including apparently some former trump administration officials. todd and jillian. jillian: benjamin hall, thank you. todd: a rare show of bipartisanship on the steps of capitol hill. a big group of lawmakers holding a moment of silence as the united states approaches the grim milestone of 600,000 covid-19 deaths. the u.s. leads the world in virus deaths, cases and vaccine doses administered. the european union is expected to call for a second world health organization investigation into the origins of covid-19. jillian: some lawmakers say not enough is being done.

causing residents to flee their homes in northern illinois. the plant going up in flames yesterday morning, officials say about 70 workers were inside at the time. fortunately, everyone made it out okay from that, one firefighter treated for injuries. it's still unclear what caused the blast. people have been asked to evacuate homes and wear masks to protect themselves from the fumes. officials believe it could take several days for the oil based fire to burn off. jillian: a coroner confirming a wife and son of prominent south carolina lawyer were shot several times. the report didn't say where on the body they were hit. the victims were found dead on their property last week. authorities are investigating the death as a double homicide. the killings coming just days after paul attended a hearing for a 2019 boating accident that left a 19-year-old girl dead. investigators have not said whether the events are connected. there have been no arrests. todd: second teen suspect arrested with a mass shooting in

downtown austin over the weekend. investigators say they were arrested while attending a summer school class at a high school. the shooting killed one and injured 13 others. another suspect under the age of 17 has been arrested. police say the shooting may have been the result of an argument between two groups. jillian: doj official don demers is set to resign over allegations. they subpoenaed records amid congressional investigations into former president trump. don mcgahn said he was also targeted. reporters from cnn, the new york times, the washington post were also the subject of those probes. attorney general merrick garland referred the matter to the department inspector general. todd: everyone in the pool, the queen of the pool punching her ticket to the tokyo games. take a look.

been our ally, historic ally, president truman recognized israel shortly after its formation, so to equate them with a terrorist organization absolutely uncalled for, made everyone i would say on both sides of the political divide, made us -- made everyone uncomfortable. jillian: here's what nancy pelosi has to say, quote, it's not constructive, in fact it's dangerous for them to speak that way. it's dangerous to the target of their comments. but they don't appreciate that, they don't care about that and she was referring to the fact that, you know, a lot of gop members are calling the squad the hamas caucus. what is your response to that? >> i don't know if that's helpful. we should all watch our language. thrls no question about that. but there is no place, no place for referring to our ally, israel, in the same breath had as a terrorist organization. jillian: was it fair to call them the hamas caucus then? we have heard that a number of times. >> i don't think i would use

that terminology. i don't think that terminology was used in the resolution. but the use of the juxtaposition of our ally, israel, with a terrorist organization has no place in our discourse either. todd: it will be interesting to watch nancy pelosi with this high wire act until the midterms. a new report by three democratic organizations showing the movement is hurting the party. here's the key quote, our assumptions about democratic support among voters of color and lack of differentiation in our messaging and outreach within demographic groups cost us support in key races. so why when faced with the reality of the situation do they keep up with the identity politics, congressman? >> because historically it has worked well for them and it is -- it's unfortunate. you do see identity politics as one of the things that divides us as a country.

it doesn't help as far as the so-called effort to bring people together that president biden spoke about in his inauguration address, identity politics is in my opinion always divisive. we have to look at ways of being inclusive. todd: you mentioned in the past, historically has worked. the latest study presumably focusing on the recent election showed it didn't work. what do you predict for 2022? >> i hope they keep it up because clearly what doesn't work for them works for us. you see the of difficulty, you go down this road and invite division. jillian: the report lists certain states, talking about african-american voters in virginia, north carolina, buy the messaging like defending the police instead of defunding and lists various states in the messaging that works. it will be interesting to follow that into 2022. i want to get your opinion.

vice president kamala harris has yet to visit the southern border as you know but she is hosting lone star state democrats who thwarted the gop elections bill at the white house, this is happening tomorrow. what do you make of this? i know so many people are disappointed she hasn't been down there yet. >> she needs to go. your previous article about the democrats losing power in otherwise historically supported groups, hispanics on the border is one of those areas where democrats are losing support. and we just saw the election of a former gop chair as the mayor of mick allen. that was -- mcallen. that had to be start living for people -- startling for people observing the political situation at the border. i've been to the border so many times this year. you can't ayou appreciate it if you don't go. texas democrats know that why not invite her to mcallen,

and the list goes on. todd: joining us with his reaction, fairfax county school district dad gary aiken. the word jihad did not come up once in my high school graduation, how about yours? >> todd, thank you very much for having me on this morning to discuss this very important topic. i think it's important for your viewers to know that the comments here, her incendiary comments are not the first example of divisive and anti-semetic rhetoric. several weeks ago she posted vile anti-semetic tweets on her social accounts which were linked to the official nonpartisan fairfax county school board page where she called israel an apartheid colonizer that desecrates the holy land and kills palestinians

and this caused huge outrage with jewish americans here in northern virginia and sparked outrage across all political lines and there were calls for her to apologize. she offered no apology. she dubbed down on it and -- doubled down on it and all of this was done on the final day of ramadan when she could have called for tolerance, when she could have called for dialogue. instead, she chose words that drove division. there's no surprise that at a graduation it's disgusting that she chose to drive further division. todd: here's a statement from the public schools. individual school board members have a right the to share personal views at any public event in which they're invited to speak. the opinions do not reflect the views of the school board or the school division. you mentioned all those events that led up to this speech. with that in mind, didn't the

school board know that this is exactly what they were going to get when this woman spoke? >> absolutely. and to say that school board members don't represent the school board, when they're at official school functions like a commencement mow any, -- ceremony are absurd. it doesn't stop there. the speaker who introduced her introduced her as a libyan american. she is a u.s. citizen. she was born here. before that, she he refused to put her hand over her heart for the pledge of allegiance. she refused at other ceremonies to stand for junior rotc cadets. and during the pledge of allegiance at justice high school's commentment they changed the words in the pledge from under god to under a law. so the idea that none of this was sanctioned, none of this was preapproved, that nobody proof read her speech and said maybe

seeing right there on your screen? >> you know, we have talked about this before it doesn't make any sense, but the whole defund the police movement and blm movement it looks and sounds good on social media or in a tweet. a lot of folks want to get behind that to be a part of something. in patrol car think, so dangerous for all communities and americans. the democrat are going to have to own that when it comes to midterms in 2024. they have to own that they're the party of lawlessness. this culture of lawlessness spread across our country. emboldened criminals and thugs and bad people to believe they don't have consequences for their actions. or, if they do have consequences they believe they can get out of it with a social media video. they believe that they have got public opinion and public perception in their corner. so that has fostered this new wave of emboldened and elm brazened on the streets. chosen to refund their police or demonize their police force and you get the perfect storm of what you are seeing right now
