freedom. they are calling for an end to the communist dictatorship and a shortage of basic life necessities. republican congressman byron donalds is noting this glaring contrast. here is what he tweeted. protestors in america burn the u.s. flag, a symbol of freedom, liberty and justice. ideals that every american possesses and ignored. protestors in cuba who fly the american flag and are willing to die for the freedom, liberty and justice that is synonymous with the usa. republican congresswoman nicole malliotakis is the daughter of a cuban immigrant who fled the country after fidel castro came into power. she says this today. >> so far the biden administration has done nothing. we as cuban americans want to see freedom and democracy and we want to see human rights. people in cuba right now are starving. they don't have food.

thousands of cuban protested in the streets in the largest public demonstrations in decades. in cuba doing this can quickly land you in jail. many chanted freedom or life. flip-flopping the revolutionary phrase freedom or death. these people have had enough of long-time food shortages. poor access to medicine and an overall horrible economic situation. they called for government change blaming it also for a dismal coronavirus response. here in miami on sunday little havana it filled up with thousands of supporters all calling for change as they have for 50 years with no success. while florida's republican cuban american senator marco rubio and governor reacted by condemning the cuban regime. senator bernie sanders has remained silence. here he is in 2020 on 60 minutes. >> we're very opposed to the

states are doing very well economically. with the opening to cuba they have had a lot of tourism so the cuban people opened their eyes and know what the rest of the world is experiencing and know why they don't have it. that's why they've taken to the streets. i think it could be potential lay prerevolutionary and pro democracy situation in cuba. >> harris: wouldn't the biden administration have to see it and recognize it as such? i'm confused with some of the rhetoric coming out of the administration right now. what we say matters. people in iran when they were ready to march there was silence from that particular white house. all right. the "wall street journal" editorial board is reporting the biden administration is considering dropping -- here is a quote, what they call it. captive nations week, a proclamation condemning soefshient and communist imperialism and repression. they want to drop that.

white house aides have been floating a new idea of ditching the phrase in favor of free and open societies week. they write the difference may seem semantic but the notice of captive nations carries more weight than free and open societies in the context between democracy and authoritarian. language matters. why is this happening? >> well, the only people who like socialism and communism in the world today are in the united states congress and biden administration. why we would drop what america has stood for for centuries, democracy, free expression, rights, the opportunity of society and somehow have that throw that away for that gauzy notion of i don't know what that statement says. this is the time when we should stand up and especially when you see what's happening in cuba and hong kong, if you see what's happening in other parts

people they need to be incarcerated. i'm tired of these democrats telling us they need to defund the police, that they don't need to have as much prosecution. you have people within the democratic party saying if you don't want more people in prison don't build more prisons. these people need to be detained if they are guilty they need to be prosecuted. go through that process to figure out whether or not they are guilty. if they are guilty they need to be incarcerated. don't tell me like they do in california and other places where the petty crimes that are supposedly just petty and they are doing shoplifting, those types of things, that they will let them get away with it. how many times do we have to watch dozens of people going into a target and walgreens and run out the door with whatever they want and sell it on the street themselves? >> harris: as you said, it is a slippery slope for more deadly crimes. the ostrich approach i was referring to with lightfoot isn't working.

president biden is under pressure now to pick more progressive federal prosecutors. one activist told the hill, quote, it should be a strong indication for the administration that the public has acknowledged that we're at a point where we need to erase 40 years of prison build-up and extreme sentencing and prosecuting people for low-level offenses and sending them to prison and i think we've seen the success around aform-minded prosecutors and politically out of touch for this administration not to recognize that. the deputy director of the sentencing project. it is reminiscent of the petty crimes you were just talking about. >> i really do believe that there needs to be reforms within the criminal justice system. i helped lead that and sponsored a bill to that effect. but when people commit crimes that are violent, sexual in nature, when they are using a gun in the commission of those crimes, those need to go to the

top of the list. they need to be prosecuted and there needs to be a consequence. everybody in that community needs to know they will get caught and prosecuted and that they shouldn't do the crime if they can't do the time. that doesn't happen. it was just last year that kamala harris was bailing people out of riots as fast as she could to get them back out on the streets. >> harris: softer on crime federal prosecutors quickly your reaction to that as a potential. >> the biden administration and kamala haish are totally out of touch. if they think america wants us. if we want the crime rate to go down let's prosecute less people. that's not the formula for success. people know whether or not their streets are safe. in many big democratic cities are getting worse, not better and they aren't safe. >> harris: president obama's former ethics chief doubled down on his criticisms of

they return to school this fall the state says they'll have to wear masks again in the classroom despite the updated guidance from the cdc that it is no longer necessary for our little ones to wear masks if fully vaccinated over the age of 12 fully vaccinated. dr. siegel. you wrote an op-ed pushing back on that. no more school mask mandates. our kids have suffered enough. >> i wrote it because i saw it coming. i saw this exact problem coming where the cdc said if you are vaccinated you don't need a mask, teachers union needs to get vaccinated if they are afraid let teachers get vac naitd. if a child is vaccinated they don't need a mask. young children i'm concerned about the cdc's guidelines that young children should continue to wear masks. not because i think a mask is
