>> they were fighting over corn. i was told it wasn't about a lady but food. >> dana: must be good corn. i made good corn over the weekend. "the faulkner focus" is up next, here she is. >> epic showdown raging over whether americans should be forced to wear masks again as covid cases are on "the faulkner focus". growing backlash after the cdc reversed course urging fully vaccinated americans to mask up indoors. the agency pointing to the delta variant being more easily spread. many americans say with vaccines available mask wearing should be a personal choice. white house advisor dr. anthony fauci disagrees as the cdc director defends her decision.
8:01 am
>> the fact is there are things that are individual responsibilities that one has which also impact others. and the spread of infection that we're seeing now, the surge in cases, is impacting everyone in the country. >> this was not news that i expected the american people to welcome. this weighed heavily on me to have to do this. i have no interest in continuing mask guidance and the best way to stop a new variant from spreading is to have less virus out there. >> john barrasso is tearing into the biden administration over this. >> now for the chaos coming out of the cdc and joe biden. they ought to be sued and found guilty of medical malpractice. they've flip-flopped, may 13th if you've been vaccinated you don't need to wear a mask anymore. now saying no, you need to go
8:02 am
back to the mask. how will you encourage people to get vaccinated if you say even if you get vaccinated you still have to wear a mask? and a lot of the anger i hear is the fear that this administration, since they flip-flopped and masks will they flip-flop on a lockdown and shut down schools? >> dr. siegel. thank you for being here. another weekend of a lot more confusion, a lot more questions people do have. to that republican senator tearing into the administration over the changes, is that fair to say that not just the administration but dr. anthony fauci and the cdc and others are flip-flopping on this guidance? >> i don't think the word flip-flopping is right. they are basing it on what they think is an evolution of the science and i agree with one part of dr. fauci's statement which is there is an individual responsibility issue here if you think you are spreading a virus or could be. let tell you what's wrong.
8:03 am
if you aren't vaccinated a mask plays a role in a public place because you could be infected and spread it. the reason they jumped the gun on the mask guidance for the vaccinated is they don't have information that if you are vaccinated, that you can carry covid and spread it asymptomatically. i talked to dr. walensky about that last week and that information isn't there. if you look at the provincetown outbreak, really interesting. 70% of those who got covid were vaccinated, right? you would think that's a nod towards wearing masks but it was 60,000 people that descended on provincetown. 95% of the people in provincetown are vaccinated. so of course most of the cases are going to be vaccinated. it was only 1,000 cases out of 60,000 people and only seven ended up in the hospital. they were extremely mild. in other words, if all you have is vaccinated people in an
8:04 am
area, then the cases you see are going to be vaccinated but much, much less because the vaccine is working. there is no evidence that if you are vaccinated that you are spreading this asymptomatically. if you are not, then you really don't need to wear the mask other than to protect the unvaccinated. >> you do here in the debate out there the word flip-flop. there are comparisons made to things that the medical professionals advised the americans people months ago about mask wearing and vaccines dr. siegel. this is a long twitter thread that has gone viral. he lists what he is calling fauci's flip-flops. he originally said masks weren't affected now vaccinated people are urged to wear masks. less than a month ago fauci said the cdc wouldn't change
8:05 am
its masking given the delta variant. this tweet points out it did. the writer calls out fauci for confusion on how many masks are suggested claiming it depends on when you ask fauci what that answer would be. he also highlights some other contradictory messages. fair to say there is a reasonable amount of confusion out there, dr. siegel? and to some extent isn't it the cdc's own fault for that? >> yes, it is because of poor messaging and mixed messaging and changing messages. but i also think that there is no taking into account something i would call mask fatigue. people were told okay, get back to normal. we're over this and we're reopening and bam, suddenly to go in the other direction without a, an idea what it would do to the psyche of the country, b, people aren't going to comply with the masks anyway
8:06 am
if you told them not to and c, again, the issue of whether the effectivesness is there and most important the word mandate keeps creeping in here. that's like saying we can't have a personal responsibility. i am wearing my mask more than i was before and i was vaccinated. i'm making that choice. people can make that choice. to be clear. >> many are. >> constantly being told what to do as well as the school principal. what are you going to do, send the police out to arrest the unmasked? i mean, it has gotten to the point of ridiculousness in that way. >> it's a matter of how people are feeling about this virus. recent polling is showing there is a massive shift in american's attitudes about the pandemic. in june 89% felt like things were getting better. a lot of us were in that crowd. only 3% were saying it was getting worse. now only 40% say things are improving and 45% say it is
8:07 am
getting worse. it is no doubt, dr. siegel, when i go through my daily print-out of the covid daily data that our brain room provides us every morning a 44% increase in the seven day rolling average of new cases in this country. 72,000 per day now. you look at hospitalization rate up 46% week over week. death rate up. what is so important to clue in all that is that vaccinated versus the unvaccinated. who is getting sick and ending up in the hospital? >> that's extremely well put out by you. all of those facts are correct and it is the people that are not vaccinated or by the way that didn't get immunity from having gotten over infection. we have also shown that natural immunity offers a layer of protection here. those neither vaccinated or gotten over infection are the ones getting sickest here. if you are vaccinated, at worst you will have a breakthrough of a mild case in the vast
8:08 am
majority of cases. this is a very simple equation. instead of masking up people that are vaccinated, which sends the wrong message. how about just focus on vaccinating those who haven't been vaccinated and those who haven't ever had covid. i believe in giving a shot to those who have had covid but let's get everybody vaccinated. >> the spread of the delta variant is sending people out to get jabs. promising news over the weekend was just that. we were seeing a double digit percent increase in some areas of the country are people are rushing to get the vaccine. admiral giroir saying if you've not been vaccinated you will get the delta variant made headlines. i want to play this four, governor desantis. big questions about what will happen with schools in the fall. he issued this executive order in florida blocking mask mandates in the schools there. some including the nih director collins are concerned about this move. listen.
8:09 am
>> i'll be signing an executive order which directs the florida department of education and department of health to issue emergency rules protecting the rights of parents to make this decision about wearing masks for their children. we think that's the most fair way to do it. >> i don't understand the ban. certainly it seems like something local officials ought to be able to decide based on their community's circumstance. we know that kids are capable of getting pretty sick. this is not to be just dismissed as a zero risk. >> all right. nih director doesn't understand desantis mask order and he is responding to the residents of the states who are concerned about the lost learning in the schools and putting masks back on kids when they return in the fall, what it will do for learning, for the socialization process and kids just in general getting back together and getting back the normal, dr. siegel. what do you think? >> well, i think the key word is mandate. i think that once you put the
8:10 am
word mandate on this you are not allowing for the fact that some kids very young kids especially just can't tolerate the mask or they have problems breathing with a mask or they get very anxious or problems interacting. studies have shown that this very low risk in spread in schools especially among the very, very young children. the wild card here is the delta variant again. over the summer we've seen more spread in schools than before. so i recommend trying the masking in schools but the mandate is the problem here. that's what governor desantis is reacting against. this should be more of a way to look at this from a public health point of view than constantly the stick rather than the carrot. >> along with the mandates comes a lot of hypocrisy that we saw over the weekend in places like chicago and d.c. and others. that's coming up later in the show. great to see you, thank you. >> thank you. >> new information in the investigation of the origins of this pandemic.
8:11 am
it could even more weight to the lab leak theory. a new report by house republicans showing officials from that lab in wuhan requested major safety renovations just months ahead of this outbreak. house foreign affairs ranking member michael mccaul on that. >> they were involved in a cover-up. it's the greatest cover-up in human history. i think the chinese communist party are very concerned about this report coming out telling the truth and the fact of the matter is they were playing with fire. >> rich edson is live at the state department on that for us. >> good morning. the most comprehensive public report arguing that the pandemic began at a research lab in wuhan. part of that case is the chinese government procurement site requesting bids for major renovations for air safety and waste treatment systems at research facilities that were operational for only a couple of years.
8:12 am
such a significant renovation so soon after the facility the began opation appears unusual in the months prior to the outbreak of covid-19. unclear why the chinese government requested the projects and unclear if the work was ever submitted and done. another circumstantial element they're building the case to show it may have escaped from the wuhan lab in 2019. republican researchers said there is evidence that the virus was spreading throughout central wuhan earlier in 2019 than originally thought just as the city hosted the world military games that year. the report says the games with thousands of international athletes helped spread the virus around the world. athletes reported illnesses and competitions with no fans and four countries that sent athletes to the games confirmed the presence of covid-19 in november and december of 2019.
8:13 am
now, the administration has tasked the intelligence community to come up with a covid origins report. one that is due at some point later this month to either look into whether this escaped from a labor the disease occurred naturally. democrats have refused to join in the capitol investigations. >> democrats flouting their own covid guidance. two big city mayors appeared at events without face coverings as they call for everyone else to mask up. plus this. >> we are losing a grip on public safety and we have to respond immediately and treat this like the crisis that it is. >> another bloody weekend in democrat-led cities.
