this is a direct assault. it won't end. not only is a gang banger problem but we have a political problem in the city of chicago where it's about the party and not about people. so yes, we will be back here monday and this is tragic, absolutely tragic. >> harris: if there is any way he could be wrong. garrett tenney live in chicago. garrett. >> harris, so far this year 38 chicago police officers have been shot at and 11 have been hit including these latest two officers who were conducting a traffic stop on the city's south side saturday night when one of the passengers opened fire. >> i got an officer down. 10-1, officer down, officer down. officer down, male black, blue cuff jersey, give me some units. >> 29-year-old officer ella french died from a gunshot

wound to the head. she joined the force in 2018. she wanted to see people get the help they needed more than throwing people in jail. the other officer, a 6 year veteran on the force is in critical condition fighting for his life after being shot three times including one bullet that went through his eye. on sunday mayor lori lightfoot said the ongoing debate over police accountability isn't helping the city's fight against gangs and gun violence and called on both sides of the debate to come together. >> there are some who say that we do not do enough for the police. and that we are handcuffing them from doing their jobs. there are others who say we do too much for the police. it is constant strife. it is not what we need in this moment. the police are not our enemies. >> the head of the chicago
8:04 am
police union argues city leaders, including the mayor, have emboldened and encouraged criminals by failing to fully back the police. >> it's disgusting and now because the political climate says the defund policy and police maybe aren't the enemy now she has to pivot and be our best friend? it's too late. the men and women of this police department have no respect for this mayor. >> all three suspects connected to saturday's shooting are in custody and questioned by the police while we await charges to be filed. harris. >> harris: you have probably heard me say this and i know we say many victims' names and i think it's important to say the police officer's names, officer ella french passed away. her cohort we haven't heard. has his name not been released. >> police have not released his name. a six-year veteran on the force

8:06 am
so glad you are with us today in focus here. first of all, your initial reaction to the word targeting, being targeted. is that too tough a word or is that really what's happening with cops now? >> that is a tough word and it is tough for me to hear. i'm a retired officer after being shot in the line of duty and to hear that officers are being targeted that's definitely a tough one to take. i was one of those officers at one point. >> harris: just to remind everybody a little bit of the commonality between you and officer french. young mom, fresh back from maternity leave. i could be talking about her or could be talking about you, shot three times, you were. you know what this is like. thankfully you have survived. it has to be just hard on her family and everybody around her. >> you know, i'm sure it is and my heart goes out to her, my heart goes out to the officer

who is still recovering. and it is never a fun situation to be in especially being a parent. once you become a parent you become a different person at work, too. how you move at work becomes different and you have to make it home because you have people who rely on you and that's one of the things i held onto during my critical incident. i had two toddlers at home that i needed to get home to. my heart just aches for officer french's family and the officer who is currently in the hospital. >> harris: right now as we're talking we're looking at the officers who were killed or shot at in the line of duty, the 38 of them scrolling across the screen right now. i just want people to take notice and if they have a moment say their names today. i believe in that. in faith that means something to lift up a name. i want to move to this and it's specific to your state.
8:08 am
the national fraternal order of police is recording more than 158 officers have been shot in the line of duty and at least 52 ambush-style attacks with 67 officers over that same period. that's an increase of 126% over the same period last year nationwide. specific to you, though, in arizona, they are still talking about how they will handle police. quickly your thoughts on reform. >> well, i feel like reform has to happen on both sides. we have to come together. we do have to have the uncomfortable conversations. and we have to hear what the public wants and also have to understand what officers go through every day. i remind people often i have was a person in uniform not just my uniform. people see the uniform and act
8:09 am
like the uniform doesn't have feelings, a family, or a life outside of the job. as my uniform could have gone to work for me that day and take ten three bullets okay. it didn't. there was a person inside that uniform. we have to be honest and get to a place where we really understand what each other is going through and how we view each other and get to the point of treating people with kindness. just like officer french, i was more concerned with going out and treating people well rather than taking people to jail. >> harris: lindsey mccaul long a pleasure to have you in focus today and i'm glad you're doing well. thank you. we want to move on to the northwest. antifa protestors in portland shut down a christian worship event. police did not intervene and made no arrests even as the crowd harassed families including children. they sprayed the worshippers with a substance as well as stealing their lawn furniture

and sandwiches. that's the protestors praying people, taking stuff from them. in portland murders have skyrocketed by more than 300% from last year. we physically watched this. we've been watching that arrow as it goes up every week. shootings are up 116% and as crime is going up, police funding is going down. last year the city cut 15 million dollars from its police budget. another 2.9 million in cuts have been proposed for this year. no huge surprise here, 115 officers left the police department in portland last year alone. now what you are about to see we want to warn you about this. it's new video and it's violent and disturbing but brings home the point of some of what we're talking about. there are young ones in the room, stand back. you see jason rantz is there. a friend of the program. you see that on the screen and
8:11 am
he provided this video. surveillance footage out of seattle showing a 22-year-old freelance photographer being brutally beaten to the ground and robbed in broad daylight. the attack fueled new concerns throughout the city about safety. wow. pete hegseth is co-host of fox news weekend. i don't know where we are in this conversation. we've stopped talking and some people just want to use their fists and bullets. >> that's right. that's a disturbing video. you don't stomp on someone's head like you saw unless you are trying to brutally injure them and possibly kill them. that is what we saw there. my question here is what did people expect? what did seattle and portland and chicago expect when they demoralized and defunded the police? the video you're showing right there is a christian worship service in a public park.
8:12 am
we have a right to peaceably assembly and have free worship. what you had was a group of antifa thugs with shields and gas spraying families and kids, throwing eggs at them and physically intimidating them and confronting them. taking their speakers and throwing them into the river. blowing gas on them right there. where are the police? that's the question you want to ask. antifa posted on twitter about this. they said they were going to be there to confront these christian worshippers. where were the police. another video where police are in the car as antifa is cutting a right wing group. they are sitting in their car. i want to blame the police and say why don't you step in except you can't. why would they? why would they step in? they are the ones who will have their fingers pointed at them. what they would normally do, harris, is stand there and hold back antifa. if you assault, steal, riot and loot anything you are arrested
8:13 am
and guess what? the peaceful people in lawn chairs have a right to worship even in seattle. it is insane. it is an upside down world. >> harris: two things at play there. where are police? they have been so under funded in some of these cities and it was one we gave as an example that what they could do they're not there to do. the other thing is who will you hold accountable in the end and what you say is they get blamed? they have been the ones up until now to stand between the danger and protecting those people from the danger. they have been the warriors on the front lines. it is unbelievable this happened. >> thank you for saying. >> harris: are they possibly being -- go ahead. >> sorry, harris. >> harris: are they possibly being out numbered? i say that. when you lose hundreds of people the criminals know this, too and why they put it up on social media. they know they won't meet resistance. go ahead, pete. >> that's right. thank you for saying her name
8:14 am
ella french. they put their lives on the line and do an impossible job. i'm not blaming the police. i don't blame the police. why would you get out of your car when there is no up side? the criminal thugs rule the street. they shut down a christian worship service in a public park and no consequences, no arrests, no nothing. this happens in third world countries not major american cities. politicians, democrats have demoralized, demolished, defunded to the police departments there is no reason for them to get out of their car. whose lives are worse for it? all the people who live in those places and they can yell about defunding the police. who are they going to call? they'll call the police and they won't be there to answer because there is not enough of them. there is no reason for them to sign up and serve and why does antifa have a twitter account? donald trump doesn't. antifa can talk about they take down a christian worship service and that's okay?
8:15 am
double standards are rampant and people are fed up. >> harris: we didn't even go to freedom of religion. missouri congresswoman cori bush yesterday said she is not backing down from her defund the police message. exactly what pete is talking about. are they even paying attention? she says even if it hurts her own party politically she won't back down. >> you said you have your own security, almost in the same breath advocating for defunding the police. could those comments end up being harmful to your fellow democrats politically speaking? >> we're still fighting this same fight. we're still fighting to save black lives. that work was not done before i got here. the reason why we have these problems is because those that were in power and could have fixed this problem before now didn't and it cost lives. when we're adding more money to the police but we're still dying. so something has to change.
8:16 am
>> harris: you know, i don't like to call people names but i do call out what i see as something that is not true. so not liar. if you are protected to dedicating black lives? did you see the numbers in chicago? where is cori bush in that scenario, where is blm the organization in that scenario, pete? >> amen. sheer air gons. her life matters in her mind because she is so special. it is hubris and ignorant of what is happening on the ground. if she doesn't care politically about it, fine. she is sticking to her terrible principles. the problem is the white house is going along with this far left crowd. they are listening to them. they are following that thread and it is hurting people. it is hurting police departments. cori bush can yell all she wants. i hope she yells more.

nation. in the many years i've been fortunate enough to call you friend, tammy, you have advocated and been there for so many women through different circumstances. 11 women allegedly against this governor now. what would you say to the women at this point? >> you are right. harris, throughout our professional and personal lives many women understand this experience. it is something that we deal with on a man by man or situation by situation basis. and the unfortunate thing is this kind of environment in politics where an individual can feel as though they can do whatever they want. they are completely protected, that the rules and laws do not apply to them and that gets proven to them over and over and over again creates in a way these monsters that will never stop and never believe they will be held accountable. so it is almost an environment that calls on our worst selves and to become the worst that we can become. this is one of many situations,

obviously. there will be more in the future. for the women who now have come forward partly i think because of the #metoo movement even though it seems to have faded a bit. there is a reminder where people have had a enough. the young woman said it perfectly. when there is denial and it is in front of everyone, there is a thing that snaps and you think this is not right and even in her need to repeat that what he did was a crime is isn't to me. we've forgotten it is not just harassment or inconvenience but sexual assault. and we must be reminded on this. we see all the time where politicians in particular, their big payment is that they have to resign or they lose their jobs. when the normal would be in prison if they did this to multiple people. >> harris: the normal, just plain citizens like the rest of us. talking about the politics of

this, though. so democrats have said they would be in line for impeaching this governor. first of all, do you believe it? second of all, why doesn't he seem worried? >> well, i think it's because he has been trained to not be worried. his entire life he hasn't had to be worry. it is like landing on mars. you can't believe it. i think he can't believe it. so i think that the democrats, this wouldn't be happening if there was any chance at all -- let's say if the lieutenant governor was a republican or if there was a chance that someone other than another democrat would come in that they could trust. so they are seeing this is now perhaps becoming too damaging, too toxic and it is important to move on. and normally, of course, it has been known that his office has been a problem for quite some time and ms. derosa's situation and resignation indicates people are looking out for themselves and that's also unfortunate. if you were going to do the

right thing, ms. derosa would have done it quite some time ago. >> harris: critics unleashed on cnn after the channel's media analyst brian stelter addressed the lack of coverage on the cuomo show. he was named in the attorney general's report for advising high brother during the sex scandal. >> this week chris showed that he can. he tuned out the family drawing and led compelling interviews dealing with what has to be one of the hardest periods of his adult life. viewers wanted to see him on tv and let's be honest, this is tv. not a totally irrelevant factor. he had the highest rated hour on cnn on tuesday, wednesday and thursday. >> harris: oh my gosh, the part where he says chris's office isn't next to the newsroom, it is right down the hall.

like that matters. like people don't have phones. many in the media aren't buying it. brian stelter is the most shameless person in america news media. nobody else comes close. >> it is shameless and a shame. you have to go out of your way to figure out how to put some kind of positive spin on it, which becomes absurd. it is the theater of the absurd. he is ignoring it because he is linked to the problems that exist. to say that you are the highest rated show on a day on cnn is not saying much at all. you also don't want to say i was the best car wreck and people slowed down a lot to watch the disaster that's unfolding. this is for a network that likes to shame other networks and takes the high road and say they are better than everyone else, to be making excuses for this individual who has participated in covering up dynamics by helping his brother if you will, that's the shamefulness and they need to step up and admit it and try to
