fight regardless of being short of manpower and the ability to do their job. brian: like they are running a nursery school. steve: covid is the problem -- griff, thank you very much. covid is the problem. the mayor of laredo who he just mentioned pete sands is going to speak to mayorkas later today. he said what's going on there right now is terrible and everybody all across the country should know that the situation is so dire regarding covid in laredo what they're doing is the city of laredo is hiring four buses a day. they are totaling 200 migrants and shipping them off to austin and houston. and none of the people are being tested for coronavirus. none of them. apparently when they arrive in houston and austin, they are giving ppe and masks but uncertain if anybody is actually being tested at the receiving end. otherwise they are just released in the area. the reason laredo is interested in it because their hospitals

are pretty much maxed out. and if there is a coronavirus problem, that is why the city of laredo is spending between 8 and $10,000 a day to get the migrants out of their town. ainsley: they come through the rio grande valley center. that's the epicenter of this issue. then they go to laredo, he says we can't handle it our hospitals can't handle. that's why he has filed a lawsuit and why he has declared a disaster. he is saying i'm going to pay the money to ship them to austin and to houston, because they have to share in this responsibility. and he says this is a compromise. because i can't take care of all of these. look at this. they are packed. in no masks. brian: remember there was one still picture, two or three still pictures and caused chaos 24 hour coverage about the trump administration's inhumane caring for illegal immigrants? tell me how humane and safe that is. meanwhile julio has been at the border with town hall. always appears in our station, too. he sees how -- what it's like

nearly kill two officers officer, one officer. shows the sign of the times blaming the police, screaming at them and taping it so to make sure she has maximum publicity from it. it sounds like a heck -- she is not going to get mom of the year to say the least. the other thing is, with the passing of the officer, not only do they rush of the whole ceremony and the salute to her life and legacy, the person making the remarks called her ella fitzgerald. a lot of the cops go really? we told you the mayor not to come up and visit in the hospital. we told you it we have been disrespected. after a slain officer is killed they rush the whole process and screw up her name. ainsley: they didn't have the wag pipes which is what they normally do to honor an officer who is fallen. a mother in chicago lost her son exactly a year ago last july. and she said he was playing with a friend very close to their house and then someone notified her that he had been shot. she ran outside.

ainsley: well, if you have been to the frozery store lately or in the market to buy a car. you might have noticed, i'm sure you have, that everything is more expensive. ainsley: a lot of places don't have new cars unfortunately and consumer prices are up 5.4% since last year. while core inflation, which excludes energy and food, rose less than expected. brian: and it affects everybody. what does this mean for your wallet. let's ask host of varney and company stuart varney. you don't want economists, you are not there for the economists, you are there for the people. inflation hits everybody. >> okay. what you have got now is 5% inflation, wages rising at 4%. do you know what that means? you are getting more money but it's going less far. you are not as well off as you thought you were. inflation is getting rid of, wiping out the wage gains. we got say something here. the pace of inflation on a month-to-month basis is really slowing down.

but one of the things that's fueling his approval was this pandemic performance. and now that we see this surge of the day or night and the arguing between the states, and the petty policies that have him going after texas and florida ny are seeing that pfizer vaccines are less effective and to a degree moderna as well, less effective against the delta variant. meaning that hospitalizations are down, fatalities are down, but if you actually having break through disease it's diminishing by the month. ains the majority of the people with the break through got pfizer. brian: pfizer more than moderna. steve: the mayo clinic looked at

25,000 people from minnesota from january to july. so this data is now from the mayo clinic. and what they say is because delta is different from the alpha strain which the vaccines were built upon, the pfizer vaccine is only 42% effective. and that's not a great number. moderna is 76%. which is much better but it's not 100 percent. nonetheless, you know, what the administration has been trying to do is try to get as many people vaccinated as possible. yesterday, one of the things that joe biden said when he was running for president came back to haunt him because i believe it was in september when he said i don't trust anything that donald trump is doing regarding coronavirus. keep in mind, he was running for president and he was trying to say that theplace is screwing ue pandemic response, well, peter doosie asked jen psaki about that yesterday and she had this

a lot easier but they did it more effectively, 39% effective at preventing infections, johnson & johnson down to 33%. but hospitalizations are down significantly. so, it means you are -- you are going to hear more and more about breakthroughs and next thing hearing about the next few weeks are boosters. we will all have to go get boosters. ainsley: they're saying right around the corner. steve: could be tomorrow. ainsley: why do you think that the government changed the guidelines when it comes to covid and mask wearing and mask mandates? 46 percent said politics and 42 percent said new information. so look at that. more people. brian: so true. ainsley: it's about politics. brian: biggest problem with these restrictions there is no expiration date. you know what happens. the numbers go down, they continue to keep the restaurants restricted. they continue to keep gyms restricted. continue to keep travel restricted we say wait a second. because of these governors and these mayors seem to love the power. and we have already seen this

movie before. we don't want to go in that direction. we want some control over our lives, and i think americans, democrat and republicans are reluctant to give it over to elected officials. ainsley: now going into the school year and kids get vaccinated hear it's not fda approved so why would we do that? steve: when they started the plans for getting back to school this delta variant was not part of the equation. the fox news opinion polls also asked people do you like the idea that certain cities would mandate that you have got to be vaccinated to go a restaurant or use a gym or things like that? and 50% say they favor cities requiring vaccination for indoor activity. also in another. ainsley: 77 percent said that? steve: 50%. meanwhile by a 20 point margin people are more likely to shop at stores that require a vaccine because they feel that they would be in a store with other people who got the vaccine and

they would be safe. it's all about, you know, it's time to get the vaccine because it does help save your life. ainsley: california is the first state to require teachers. you have to get a vaccine if you are teaching in that state. steve: or get tested. ainsley: or get tested every week. brian: new york city fridays or applebee's starting in a couple weeks you have to show your vaccination card. and i also think people should say well, for this i understand it. but understand that this is a precedent. a slippery slope. how many other vaccines am i going to need to go and grab a burger at a bar in the future? steve: well, let's hope this covid thing goes away as soon as possible. brian: i think we will be living with variants for years. ainsley: i do, are too. steve: unfortunately as long as there are 90 million unvaccinated people they are the ones who are going to get sick. ainsley: not only are we dealing with the vaccines and covid and trying to figure all this out. we are also deal with inflation. and that affects your pocketbook. so many things have gone up year

over year. and if you compare last year to this year, car and truck rental up 73.5%. brian: wow. ainsley: hertz declared bankruptcy because of uber. gas prices up 43%. hotels up 24.1%. pork roast steak or rib you will pay more, almost 14%, and milk is up and eggs are up as well. brian: they say each in today's society, as much as things are equal, mostly women are doing the shopping. and women are seeing these numbers. and what does that mean for politicians? everything. because when people say is my life better? if you tell them they got a raise but they are still paying more when they go to the counter to pay, whether you do self, you know, self-checkout or not, they are going to say who got us into this mess and who made it worse? and that's when they go and they close the curtain and they make the vote. that's where they are going to vote. steve: well, the really scary number is when you go to the gas station. because we're not driving as much, we don't go as often.

but, when you do go, right now gas is $1 a gallon more. than it was a year ago at this time. also, according to the fox news polls, 33% think the economy is in poor condition. that's not good for joe biden. 79% blame the administration for inflation. that's not good for joe biden. and 86% are worried that inflation will be growing. and the prices are going to continue to go high, especially on oil. which is interesting because, the united states of america, has the capacity to drill and bring up to the surface a lot of oil. ainsley: we were doing well before this administration. steve: we were doing well. and then yesterday joe biden said we need more oil. but we're not going to do it because politically it would be bad for me with my green agenda. so i'm going to ask opec to do it. ainsley: but i thought he cared about the environment. they are doing what he got rid of here. they are prosecutorsing the oil the same way he is not in fair of. asking opec to give us the oil,

drill more to our gas prices go down. he knows with gas prices going up everything goals up because those truckers need the gas to deliver every single thing you need to buy in the grocery store. steve: watch the president say that yesterday at the white house. >> today gas prices are lower than they were early in this decade. but they are still high enough to create a pinch on working families. one key thing about the infrastructure bill that just passed the senate is there are no gas tax increases. no gas tax increases. but that's not enough. recently, we have seen the price oil companies pay for a barrel of oil begin to fall, but the cost of gaffes lien at the pump for more american people hasn't fallen. that's not what you would expect in a competitive market. we also made clear to opec, the major oil exporting nations of the world. that the production cuts made during the pandemic should be reversed as a global economic --

steve: a fourth grader in las vegas got a surprise police escort on his first day of school in honor of his late father. noah swanger's father was a las vegas police officer who died of covid in june. office evers wanted to remember the devoted husband and father by giving noah a special start to his first day of fourth grade >> ready? first day of school? >> do you know why he's wearing a tie? >> why are you wearing a tie?

jason was a great great officer. he taught me something really important in life, that you can give your job 100%, but then come home and give your family 100% but if it's not one or the other abdomen he was great with veterans in crisis. he knew so many resources i had no idea about because he was a veteran. he took the time on calls. he was a funny guy, an infectious laugh, and he was a blessing to have on the squad. really a great guy. steve: right and don, why did you guys decide to try to honor him by escorting noah to school? >> you know, i think only because he would have done the same thing probably for anybody else, anybody else's kid, son, daughter, he would have done it if they were related, not related. he just had a huge heart, you know, jason brought that out in us and that's why we're here to support noah. he's an amazing kid, and i didn't know him for a long time

but for the moment i had known him he's got a big heart too just like his dad and extremely important to us to see him move on and be happy and live a wonderful life, so we're here to support him. steve: christa how important is it that the officers have your back during this time of need? >> it's extremely important. it really shows noah and i that a job he went to, and they've done everything, i mean, on his birthday they came, the whole squad came up with a trunk full of presents to surprise him, jason's partner tries to come home and have lunch with noah whenever he can, because that's something that they did during the summer in distance learning, and it was the highlighted of noah's day. he'd ask all morning, is daddy and scott coming home? so, he tried to do that, and also his partner scott's
