and shallower seven.zero that devastated haiti 11 years ago it is stronger but 6 miles down. not as many predicted to be killed that there is death and devastation on an island and now fox news coverage on reaction from the haitian community and then on the tropical storms that are threatening the region but first let's go to the latest with the disaster in haiti. >> that struck off the haitian coast 6 miles beneath the surface we were talking about that debt very important. what you need to look out for is especially in what is relatively shallow water believe it or not at 10000 meters is the possibility of a tsunami the

united states did issue a tsunami warning almost immediately but then lifted it. the reports on the ground suggest that while some coastal area was flooded it did appear to retreat so good news on that front but the second danger is that what it can do on the island itself a stranger and there things are not quite as good it was felt in the capital in fact many people immediately ran outdoors out of concern the buildings could collapse and there does appear to be significant damage in the capital. but without a doubt it is on the coastline and there are reports at least one town was completely destroyed. fatalities at over 200. one hour ago it was 29 so the death toll is rising rapidly. you can expect more of that as they pull people out of the rubble. a difficult situation with the hospitals in that town

apparently they are beyond capacity they cannot deal with all of the people there so the numbers are expected to go up everybody compares this to what hit haiti 11 years ago that killed an estimated 300,000 people and left tens of thousands more homeless. the concern with this earthquake is a tropical storm is set to hit the island soon. with major structural damage you could have the aftermath that is as dangerous as the original quake. also reports because the internet services patchy and believe it or not there is gang activity in some parts of haiti apparently obstructing the ability of rescuers getting to really need to be for help. the president put immediate

haiti and fred is in front of it sandwich between these two storms we are talking about and we are on the move with grace behind it now makes the move the next several days that sandwiched right between them it is that in between space that they are sitting in where another round will come so i will begin with the remnants of fred. at this point they did see it move through haiti heavy rain still falls through cuba going up into the gulf of mexico it has slowed down may be a tropical storm or depression by the time it makes landfall in the florida gulf coast into monday afternoon maybe this is a rainmaker. maybe isolated areas of six or 8 inches where this makes landfall may be 10 inches panama city beach, those are

the areas we are concerned with on monday. but also into tuesday , tropical storm grace working over the republic likely impacting haiti on monday evening into tuesday morning is still where this will go these are the tropical models there you can see it does take it over where the earthquake just happened so it could be a problem for some of those folks. we will pay attention to that. i will leave you with this reminder we are seeing more activity in the tropics. we are at the very beginning statistically where we bump up to see activity so maybe another busy six weeks ahead of us. arthel: as mentioned earlier the white house taps samantha power to coordinate the us

response effort in haiti serving as the head of the us agency for international development. powers tweeted earlier "a magnitude seven.2 earthquake struck katie this morning. potus and vp have been briefed asking usaid to court us response our experts are already on the ground assessing damage we are moving urgently to respond. right now we have senior research scientist with from the observatory at boston college with life-saving meetings measures were the most immediate needs on the ground with haiti? >> most immediate obviously are getting people into the area to search for people who are caught in rubble who need to have been gotten out to survive there is a need for shelter for those who have lost their homes. what i'm worried about is because this is a hilly area west of port-au-prince you have relatively few roads

there could be some landslides if you bring in the tropical storm that can saturate the soil with further landslides to block roads. transportation may be an issue in the foreseeable future. arthel: with that in mind, talked about the crucial coordinating efforts that the us will coordinate with officials and what are those efforts given the potential roadblocks in place? >> from a scientific perspective we will launch scientific perspective where they are ideally if we could set up a warning system so as the strong aftershock occurs for the people that are involved in search and rescue to coordinate search and rescue would be one thing

coordinating getting food and shelter is another important aspect of coping with this disaster in dealing with outbreaks of disease and of course the covid pandemic going on right now that's a major problem obviously. arthel: with that in mind do you think that doctors and medics on the way will be armed with vaccines and masks? because now people are crowded into shelters together. >> they will have to bring all of the available medical equipment and all the medicines that they can they are used to airlifting into situations like this. they have their supplies they will grab what they can and bring them. you do the best you can when there is a disaster like this. arthel: and we just reported on tropical storm grace headedt.

how does that compound rescue efforts to get residents to safety and what must be immediately done to protect lives from a storm when the island is compromised? >> usually with a tropical storm the first thing you worry about is high wind and damage but in this case because of the earthquake , you're not worried about the way and damaging structures because they have been damaged but you are worried about water and flooding and inundation to make the roads impassable and the compromises to the drinking water system. the rainfall will be a big problem in the more rain they get the more of a problem it will be. arthel: not only potential rockslides but other complications from tropical
