cbs news poll that shows a majority of americans tonight no longer think president biden is competent at the job as president. listen to his response. >> what would you say to those americans who no longer believe you are fit for the job quick. >> i had a basic decision to make. either withdraw america from the 20 year war from those forces and keep that going more and the war. and i decided to end the war. >> 15 in kabul very volatile with heartbreaking reports about a stampede near the airport gates that killed now at least 20 people including a toddler. now let's get live in delhi with an update of the evacuation efforts they are. reporter: good evening.

the evacuation efforts are ongoing in afghanistan right now. we were on the ground in kabul earlier today with the military as they brought up plane back ends to delhi to make sure they can get to safety. the faces of civilians they are exhausted, tired, and frustrated about the situation the taliban is not letting up on any brutality outside of the airport you could hear gunfire and smoke in the distance along the skyline this is the reality for the people of afghanistan now and for many that were fleeing to delhi and around the world now many are taking evacuees this opens a question about what happens next you leave your entire life behind and then what? that is the question evacuees have today in afghanistan.

>> so many on the ground waiting to be evacuated. the president talked about security in and around the airport in kabul and is listen to what they said they're trying to do to expand the perimeter. >> we are under no illusions about the threat. every day we have troops on the ground. these troops face the attacks of isis from the distance even though we move back the perimeter significantly. we are working hard and as fast as we can to get people out. >> the president acknowledge that we do know that isis in afghanistan right now could take advantage of the volatile situation and the chaotic situation at the airport. but he is promising anyone who wants to get out of afghanistan can do so.

he promised that tonight. what he is hearing from people not only leaving kabul but arriving in delhi? what was that process? reporter: the president is right. it is a major threat to american troops and others at the airport in kabul. intelligence indicates isis could attack american citizens making their way to the airport what the president is not doing is laying out a specific plan of how he plans to operate quickly and efficiently to get americans out of the country it is a nice idea to expand the letter but on the other side all around taliban fighters that is the situation on the ground harrowing stories many fighting hours or days to make their way to the airport talking about how they had to go through taliban checkpoint after checkpoint. one woman described have a taliban fighter asked her where she was going away she

was in the car with a man and said it was her brother and she was helping him with errands. she didn't want to say she was going to the airport because she knew that can have serious consequences. >> thank you for your reporting live from the ground, trey yingst. joe, we heard the president last week say he made the right choice by pulling troops out and essentially dug into his choices then later in the week telling us the evacuations are going fine which did not turn out to be entirely accurate. now we have a president saying "we have a long way to go and a lot could still go wrong. joe, tell me where the message is going? what about the rest of the country? is the president addressing this more seriously as the images get worse and worse day

afghanistan. lord knows are all that equipment is going right now. but this is a catastrophe. i am not surprised we see polling that shows people that do not think joe biden is in control of the situation or his own mental faculties. i'm afraid that anybody that tuned into that press conference right now will not be cured of that concern. after biden went through talk about flash flooding and trees in tennessee and then new york then got around to afghanistan and instead i have made a lot of progress since i last looked you on friday but people are not buying it. >> we still don't know how many americans around the ground are waiting to be evacuated one week later. your thoughts on the presidents address and where we are heading into the new week?

>> i posed that question to the audience yesterday had we not know how many americans are in afghanistan? how do we know we've gotten them all out how do we know when mission is complete if we don't know how many americans are in afghanistan? that just goes to show you can realize why former defense secretary robert gates says biden has been wrong about every major foreign-policy issue for the past for decades for what has unfolded over the last few days but he sits there in lies to all of us by trying to tell us this was unavoidable. joe biden zone disaster from start to finish at only did he vote to authorize the war and go to afghanistan in the first place that he presides over the biggest foreign-policy blunder leaving americans behind not even to know how many are there also leaving behind military assets.

citizens to help the troops on the ground and we are devastated we are scared for lives every moment a car passes by i think they're going to pull in and execute us. i don't know if i will see my children again. lisa: you can hear the fear in her voice because obviously so many americans and people are feeling wanting of the american government will come and save them or not. your reaction? aishah: i heart breaks for this mother and all the other americans that are over there right now in the families.

i've got friends who have family there right now as well trying to get out desperately. i don't know what to tell them anymore. is it worse to stay at home to wait for death to knock on the door go to the airport and risk of death there? i don't want to advise them anymore. and it breaks my heart and what gets me especially covering not just the americans they filled out all the paperwork and have gone through security clearances and those that have been waiting for years since 2016 and wine is trapped in kabul right now with his family and four children. i don't want to tell them anymore. they know the window of opportunity is closing. wiki period the august 31 deadline. what does that mean? summer family members.
