the taliban will not let them leave the airport. reporter: unbelievable. a state department spokesperson saying we do not have hers nell on the ground. we don't have air assets in the country. we do not control the air space over afghanistan or the region. we remind the taliban that the entire international community is looking to see if they live up to their commitments. >> [inaudible] walking as fast as i can and they started shooting right back at my legs to come back or they will shoot me i never experienced in my you life anything like this. it was like a movie scene. i definitely lots hope. i was only 15 steps away from

the airport. and i was told people will come out of the airports to get me. so what hope am i supposed to have now. reporter: that was a california woman stranded in afghanistan. that was her chilling account. she gave it to voice of america about what happened when she tried to escape. even though the state department told her to come to the airport. we heard from the white house chief of staff on the status of getting those americans out. >> we believe it's around 100. we are in touch with all of them we identified on a regular basis. we are going to find ways to get them, the ones who want to leave, to get them out of afghanistan. reporter: sounds like there is not a plan, and katie, i don't believe the administration is clear eyed telling "politico" that general mckenzie is

referring to the taliban as our afghan partners. i don't think partners hold americans hostage. >> that's right, kayleigh. that shows the position the state department and defense department put the united states of america and the americans stuck in and where in. we have very little leverage when it comes to getting niece people out. ron qulain said he hopes -- ron klain says he hopes the qataris are able the get the flights off the ground at the hamid karzai airport, but hope is not a strategy. the taliban promised they would be allowed to leave. we are talking about a hostage crisis today. but this hostage crisis started three weeks ago when it became

obvious the taliban was taking over the country and the administration was going to stick to that august 31 deadline before they were able to get everybody out. that woman was 14 steps from the airport. she turn around and left for the taliban to take care of and negotiate with. that's a hostage crisis. you can't tell me the taliban is going to be disciplined here. we should pray this doesn't get much, much worse. i'm concerned about one of these guys who is a member of the taliban having a lack of discipline and getting angry. god forbid that happens. but the idea that hope is a strategy for the qataris to handle getting these people out is an abysmal failure of leadership and highlights the weakness of our position. reporter: it certainly does. joey, president biden and press

phone towers for a few years as we put them there. the ability to communicate securely is not something that's easy to have. the fact that they want to play semantics while american lives are at risk is shameful. to go to someone else and say that dude is about to get us killed because he went to ocs, we should do something different. we have leaders that are about to get people killed. it's time someone at the pentagon or white house or state department throw their rank on the table and have the intestinal fortitude to do the right thing. if the taliban goes after america and spill american blood. god membership their soul. because under this president or the next, my brothers and sisters will seek retribution. that's what needs to be said. reporter: there could be more

than 100 americans in afghanistan. the associated press reporting they have rescue operations saying we are hearing from what we think are many more than 100 americans. darrell issa says the number could be closer to 500. does the government even know how many people are there? >> either they don't know or they are lying about it. we have been fed lie after lie from this administration and the president of the united states. "washington post," if you are listening, where is your live data base? where is your recording of each of these lies we continue to be fed on a day-to-day basis. this is not a political issue. for those who think this is about politics, this has nothing to do with politics. american lives are on the line. they said people will be able to

get out. they said the taliban would allow them to escape. first they say the taliban will allow them to leave is insane. the taliban was beating americans including children outside the airport. they have no interest in allowing people to leave. it's probably 300, maybe 500 or 600. who knows. with but we cannot trust the leadership of this administration. the must put politics aside and investigate this administration. reporter: we are going to play a quick sound bite, jennifer griffin pressing mark milley earlier today. >> is the u.s. safer today since the u.s. has withdrawn from afghanistan? >> this is something that i have thought a lot about. and i personally think that my

military estimate is the conditions are likely to develop of a civil war, and that will then in turn lead to conditions that could in fact lead to a reconstitution of al qaeda or a growth of isis or a myriad of terrorist groups. the short answer to your question is we don't know yet. but the conditions are very likely in my opinion. i testified to this and said it in public. we could see a resurgence of terrorism coming out of that general region in 24-36 months. reporter: i think the answer is no, we are not safer today. >> if he's estimating 12-36 months, it's probably 6 months looking at the way they predict things. reporter: meanwhile our president vacationing in delaware.

[♪♪♪] joe: welcome back to the big sunday show. i sat down with three combat veterans. he was deployed in 2012. marine infantryman amos benjamin. also lost his brother, a fellow marine who died working as a bomb technician in the war. and army ranger captain chad fleming. tonight i started off by asking them about the military's mission and how it was

compromised ultimately leading to withdrawal chaos. >> i think a lot of us were pissed off. one of the first things i started thinking about was how i saw so much self-preservation. that was one of the most frustrating circumstances for me. we knew what we needed to do. it was obvious. anybody on the ground, it was obvious. but we didn't do it. and nobody listened. >> the people making the decisions on the rules of engagement haven't left the wire. they haven't walked outside the wire and seen by the way they just took a pregnant female, strapped a body bomb on her. they are sending her toward my guys and i can't do anything. >> that jennifer who is not

on -- that general officer who is on the ground. joey: do you think the american people understand the difference what is necessary in war and what we consider to be morman ethical. >> moral and ethical goes out the window when you are in a place where somebody is trying to kill you. >> there are things the general public needs to know and things the general public does not need to know. war is not a pretty thing. any veteran who says i am going out and getting in a fight. no you didn't. there is nothing natural about wanting to go out and put your life on the line. >> my heart and my mind has been totally consumed with the families of the victims of the blast. to know those families are hurting in the way i know they

are, it hurts. >> the blatant lies and misinformation from the highest people in our government on a daily basis throughout this entire, you know, drawdown, pullout, whatever you want to call it. it's disgusting. >> when you start factoring politics into war fighting, bad combination, right? when you look at the wars from the past, yes there was some of that. but not what it is today. our founding fathers didn't intend for politics to be a career. if you made it a career, you probably suggested -- probably sucked at doing anything else in life. if you have someone in 1973, whatever you were doing in the 80s didn't work then and it's

still not working now. >> you gave your brother and your own peace of mind with your traumatic brain injury. was it with it? >> i didn't join the service for my own fulfillment. but was my service worth it? absolutely. >> i have no reservations, hesitations or regrets about my service in iraq or afghanistan. i would do it all over again. at the ends of the day it kept the enemy off of our turf for 20 years. it's heartening to see the path we are going on and not seeing it as an appreciation for this country that a lose of us have. if fighting for this country is what you believe in, go do it. i sure hope enough people feel that way. joey: katie, there is a lot

there to unpack. those are guys i know personally. but the main theme of this second half of our interview is the rules of engagement didn't support us. they worked against us. they didn't allow us to defend ourselves. you think politicians at least today owe the war fighter, the responsibility of understanding where they are coming from and maybe spending more time listening and pressuring the administration to fight a war in a way to win it. katie: a lot of times we hear about endless wars and being in afghanistan for 20 years. but very seldom is the question asked why were we there for so long. when you tie the hands of the military and don't let them take out the enemy in a quick fashion. we saw this under president

obama, and when president trump came in they changed the rules of engagement. the accountability factor. jennifer griffin did the interview with general milly and she asked him if anything could have been done differently and he said no. if you look at the history of the afghanistan war, not a single general has been fired or resigned after bad tactical actions or bad strategy. that's a real problem. i would say, my friend, former navy seal and sniper jack carr wrote an article talk about how to change this. he said the department of war was change withed to the department of defense. you can have a secretary of war that can fire generals for screwing up so you can win wars.

there is a huge disconnect between boots and the suits in washington, d.c. and the guys deployed overseas and that is not sustainable. joey: jack is a smart guy and i think more people should listen to him. i want to use some -- these guys weren't saying they wanted to act immorally. what they were trying to explain. we didn't fight a 20-year war. we fought two 10-year wars between campaigns. do you think maybe the american people through the press and through this specific wins almost get too much unfettered access to the day-to-day happenings of war? >> i think it's a necessity to understand what's going on on the ground. but i thought it was an

extraordinarily powerful interview. and i will continue to thank you and' your guys for this extraordinary interview. one of the gentlemen said our founders didn't intend for politics to be a career. i agree with him. if we weren't in the business of having in office someone who was in office for 47 years who declared he knows what to do, we wouldn't have him in office because he doesn't know what to do. the taliban won. america lost. that's just the reality of the situation. and it's all thanks to joseph biden. we have $2 trillion. and we have to think about things differently moving forward. joey: when president trump let 13 people die as sitting ducks,

in south carolina. alex was shot and killed after his wife and son were killed. >> are they breathing? >> no, ma'am. >> i know youd said she was shot. what about your son? >> nobody. they are not moving. reporter: there are no named suspects in the murders. a family spokesperson saying quote we expect alex to recover and ask for your privacy while he recovers. this is such an interesting and bizarre case on so many levels. for me it reeks of something organized to have all this happen. i'm so interested. this story was in the national press while you were in the white house, would this rise to involving the fbi in your

opinion? kayleigh: at this point i don't think so, but there are a lot of moving parts that leads one to suspect. but there has to be a tie between all of this death and violence. there was a 2019 boating accident that the young boy was involved in, he was driving the boat. a 19-year-old girl died. he faced 3 fell any counts for that. he was under the influence. he was out on bail when he was murdered. there were incidents when a 19-year-old was found dead near the property. and there was a 2018 case where the housekeeper died in a trip and fall accident. there was a wrongful death there and a lawsuit. there is a lot of murder and violence.

we want violence. >> joey, i'm interested in your opinion. you are former military and i know you are not law enforcement. but what stand out to you in this case? >> i think there are no suspects because there are probably quite a few suspects. it sounds like a family that was connected in the legal system in a small town. and a lot of people who felt they were wronged by them. and this is wrong justice they are seeking. it's terrible to have people murdered in any way. if you dig deep there are probably local politics involved. and you may need somebody like the fbi to get in there and see past the public corruption. >> this has been in my opinion a colossal failure. you have not solved one of these murder or accidents.

what would you advise if you were an elected official in that town. how do you keep people calm because it could happen to someone else? katie: i think they would say local law enforcement is working on it. i think i would send nancy grace to get on the case with a foxnation special. it smells to high heaven about what's going on. and the fact they have no names or lead suspects. the fact that this man had quote car trouble and just happened to be shot in the head on the side of the road because he had a flat tire speaks to more organized crime than they want to let on. and therer is a lot of questions about the local law enforcement and their ties to politicians there. i hope the family can get some answers. i saw a lot of corruption and the south carolina mob seems

it seems current california governor newsom is getting nervous. he's bringing in senior democratic members to campaign for him like kamala harris. vice president kamala harris is set to travel to california this week to campaign for newsom. gianno, i think it would be pretty desperate to bring in elizabeth warren, in combination with a very unpopular vice president to campaign for you. >> right, 55% of americans say she is unqualified and unfit to be commander-in-chief. so i'm not sure what good that will do him. i lived in los angeles from 2017 to 2020 and i had to leave.

the homeless population, about 160,000 individuals, they were going to have hotel rooms? i found out that wasn't true. a lot of those individuals on skid row had no idea. gavin newsom failed the people in california. that's why so many people have been escaping the state. i hope and pray one of these good republicans are able to beat him. whoever it is. we need to get this man out of the state because he's crippling the state. 1.7 million jobs haven't come back yet. things need to change and they need to change now. katie: governor newsom is happy to use identity politics when it comes to kamala harris and

elizabeth warren. but when it comes to larry elder, they are trying as hard as they can to keep him out of office. kayleigh: or the first transgender candidate, caitlyn jenner. kamala harris has horrific approval ratings. but they are going to bring her in and try to play identity politics. what a weird statement to make that categorically women are better and smarter in politics. one twitter writer said move aside then. katie: she has been quite absent from the forefront. joe concha wrote this op-ed. and he said this, he said since harris took office she has yet to hold even one formal solo

press conference. and it's been weeks since she sat down for a one-on-one interview. there is a reason for that. she is the former senator from california. but she has a job to do now in washington. she certainly isn't leading on that. joey: she is incredibly pop among the wealthy ruling class of california. i know a lot of those folks say she was their best pick years ago when she first got in the senate. they love her. i'm not exactly sure why. what gavin newsom is trying to do is get their money specifically. the liberals want their streets clean and they want to go down to starbucks without worrying about the riffraff. so is there a chance a big bad

bully like larry elder might get some votes from some of those people? i think so. california is a perfect piece of land that deserves to have somebody take care of it. katie: as someone who lived there for a couple of years, gianno, democrats outnumber republicans by about 2-1. as joey said, the working class is fed up with this. >> they absolutely are. but some benefited in the form of unemployment and getting those benefits. gavin newsom has paid for votes by returning some of the money that goes above and beyond what the state law says. i agree with joey with what he said about the elite ruling class. i see him with the bow tie. i think he's part of that ruling class.

katie: i think the rowdy students will get lectures by the people inside the d.c. beltway. they should be completely ignored. this is what america is all about. my dad grew up on the football field, and my grandpa is in the hall of fame in arizona for the teams he coached. i am so grateful to see all these students are out there having an awesome time. this is what it's all about. it's note living in fear and moving forward. joey: what makes sports so amazing, it's note this behemoth hate, i'm a republican, i'm a democrat. for these two or three hours we are connected to all these

people who have these colors and have this alma matre or are from the state. we call it in the south good old-fashioned hate where you end it with a handshake or a hug. gianno: i haven't heard that before but i like it. katie decided to join the nba. katie: i'm not going to fact check that. gianno: let's hope the "post" doesn't fact check it either. i didn't grow up in college sports. i started in a blood sport called politics when i was 14. but it's so great to see people living their lives again. the government has told us so many conflicting things when it comes to covid. we saw the anxiety and depression went up especially among the young folks. and it's great to see people live their lives and celebrate the greatness of sports.
