contributor, doctor janette nesheiwat. thanks for being here. what do we need to know about the new variant? >> not a big threat right now in this is good news but we need to keep an ion it and monitor it. this new variant was discovered in colombia earlier this year in january and spread to 40 different countries including the united states but only accounts for one% of the cases in the united states, 2000 cases, most in california and potentially vaccines are not as effective against this variant. we need to keep an eye on it. we have dealt the making of the majority of cases but we want to prevent more mutations from occurring. you can do that by getting vaccinated, taking precautions and monitoring for new variants. todd: what are experts saying that lead them to believe it could be vaccine resistant? >> great question.

in the lab studies show vaccines may have certain mutations similar to the south african variant in the uk variant that makes vaccines a little bit weak and also shows potentially the monoclonal antibodies as we have may not be as effective but it is important to note this is only in the lab. we do not have evidence this is true in the real world, we don't have clinical evidence to show this, only the lab. sometimes what we see and do in the lab does not translate into the real world which is a good situation here. todd: based on your first two answers i get the impression experts are not that worried the mu will replace delta as the number one concern. is that accurate? >> right now it is not looking like that. could things change? that is a possibility because delta as one point was 6% of the cases, then 10% and now almost
