jillian: i agree with what you said. on top of that we get to cover stories and unique stories, tell people stories, we've all covered stories on local news but it has been different here in one of my favorite stories to tell is that of ray lambert, a dj veteran and i had a chance to sit down and talk with him in 2019 and he told his story of d-day and these are stories these men have not wanted to open up and speak about for their entire lives and they get older and realize there are so few people left until those stories and he told it to me and i just thought that was really special and i have his wife barbara's cell phone number. ray hasn't passed but he was honored by donald trump at the 75 tube anniversary of d-day and talking about it, we have such a unique job in the sense that

do you stand on this now that you've experienced it firsthand and the school did have officers? >> i think having a police presence is great. allows them to respond quickly but they can't be everywhere at all times. even metal detectors would help with that as preventative measures. >> following julian's question following the horrific tragedy at newtown in december of 2012 there was bipartisan resounding support for school resource officers, to have somebody in the schools with a weapon to prevent something like that from happening again and over the course of the year it seems to have dissipated. do we need to get back to that bipartisan nationwide consensus but we need to do everything we can to protect our children? >> yeah. i definitely feel to my point police presence is great, makes

sense of, they are very sad about the loss of their coworker and to see this in the same area, saying defund the police. jillian: how did this happen? seems like this is quite the undertaking to be able to get this done? >> this group clearly took over someone else's billboard, very brazen and very unnecessary. jillian: law enforcement officers get support primarily in that area? >> absolutely. the citizens of memphis overwhelmingly support police and fire here, they passed a referendum, voted for tax increase on benefits, citizens understand the importance of having first responders have qualified police officers. jillian: tell me about your background because i know you

became an officer, joined the department at the age of 18, you were elected vice president of the mpa, vp for eight years and appointed president, you have been able to climb your way to the top which is very impressive. in that time and in all those positions you held i am curious how you have seen policing change over the years. >> used to be a career where little kids wanted to be police when they grew up and over the years that is changed. they talk about defunding the police, several years ago, our budgets were cut and there was a hiring freeze. they were not calling it defunding the police. our department wasn't funded. we lost 500 offices, we still have not been able to rebound from those cuts and that was 2014. over time the way people view

the police has changed budgets not a career little kids come up to you and say want to be police when i grow up. it is still worth it. there is good work to be done, still citizens who appreciate the work we do and we are still needed. jillian: the school shooting we were talking about is another example how officers were able to react in an appropriate time and save lives. did you ever envision a scenario we would be sitting here talking about a billboard that reads as it does? >> absolutely not. the difficulties they have with police agencies and different in memphis and always room for improvement, one thing doesn't take away the other thing. you can help police officers -- it would be better for every city, not just memphis.
