states released and they say the reason for the troop buildup is they are trying to keep the western world from creeping into their territory so they say it is nato that is making dangerous attempts to conquer ukrainian territory and doubling its military potential at our border, therefore russia is seriously interested in obtaining reliable guarantees excluding expansion of nato in the eastern direction so sounds like the goal of vladimir putin in all this, the reason he's amassing all these troops on the russia ukraine border is because he wants to make sure ukraine does not get into nato because if it does then the united states and our western allies would have to defend it which would be vladimir putin's worst-case scenario. neil: does seem like the goal. we are talking about it because putin put himself in a position of strength. the biden administration by

>> new polling from the wall street journal shows voters are pessimistic about the biden economy and the president's overall leadership. joe concha is here to react. let's get to one of the polls the wall street journal released. they say 61% say the economy is headed in the wrong direction 46% expect the economy to get worse this year. the thing i find interesting is this poll was taken after the infrastructure bill passed. the biden administration nothing the bumps they thought they would under the bipartisan bill passing. >> a few things to unpack from this poll, it's the economy stupid is number one, the old bill clinton campaign slogan that led them to victory in 1992 but the president stuck at 41% approval overall, 57% disapprove

despite mostly friendly press and we are not one year in. no bump from the bipartisan infrastructure bill signed last month that was supposed to change the tide the core support for biden is patently soft, 19% approve of the president, 46% strongly disapprove so you have a weak base unlike the previous president. among independent voters, these are the folks who decide elections, the president is 30% approval, 3 in 10 independents approve and only 30% of the country expect the economy to improve in 2022 so you are looking at a pessimistic electorate, i haven't been this earlier couple days. overall by incredibly high margins more voters think inflation will get worse rather than better this year, crime and border security will get worse before it gets better. no good news for team biden and democrats.

todd: on the specifics this was very positive for republicans but i would have expected the following numbers which were more generic to be more in favor of republicans and i don't think they are. let's pop these up. if the election for congress were held today which candidate would you support? 41% democrat, 44% republican, more or less that is a tie. you are a messaging expert. what does the gop need to do with its messaging specifically on the economy in the next 10 months as we lead up to november of 2022? >> i looked at the tab and the wording in question, all things being equal who would you vote for? i don't know if that's the way i phrased it with all respect to the world for the wall street journal, all things aren't equal. people feel inflation, they feel gas prices, they see things happening at the border, they see americans left behind in afghanistan. they see a dangerous situation

with russia and ukraine and the educational system and major crime in american cities, outside american cities for that matter. the messaging for republicans should be we are the common sense party. we don't believe in defunding the police which democrats are saying we are at either, we are refunding the police, we believe parents should have a say in their kids education. it worked in virginia, might as well make that a national issue. we believe americans should be out of afghanistan, we will try to double those efforts the biden administration has not talked about. we will not and trillions in spending that will lead to more inflation and make things worse on the economy. if they say the simple things if you're running for senior class president you understand the messaging wins the day. todd:'s advocate campaign speech. are you running for something?
