i'm harris faulkner. you are in "the faulkner focus". jen psaki appeared to brush off concerns about the surge in crime as the violence is hitting just up the road from the white house. yesterday d.c.'s georgetown neighborhood became the site of a deadly shooting and a high-stakes manhunt. jen psaki was saying this. >> we all agree or should agree that violent crime is a serious murder. there hasn't been new f.b.i. nationwide data released to date. our view is instead of turning it into a political football we need to be focused from the beginning of the president's -- of all of his time in office on reducing crime and putting our communities safe. >> harris: republicans telling democrat leadership time's up. >> it is no laughing matter when people get pushed into an incoming train in the subway and they end up losing their life as a result.

president whose approval numbers are so low, you know, i think in hillary's mind and team's mind look, she probably has the most experienced background. they said the same thing about joe biden. and she is one who can in essence lead the democrat party. the reality is, though, the democrats are split on hillary clinton. while she does well with certain faction of the democrat party, for the most part they've also rejected her. you see people criticizing the fact these democrats saying we don't want a hillary run. she is not a change agent, not what we need to run in 2024. so they will have their own infighting now. as republicans we sit back and watch. >> harris: there was some talk that maybe former president donald trump might jump back in. could she beat him? >> i can just tell you full

stop that secretary clinton is not planning to run for president in 2024. >> harris: how do you know? >> everyone you showed is speculating for no reason. look, tim ryan is an excellent senate candidate in ohio. the clinton camp a long history in ohio and personal friendship with him. not the first or last former politician to do fundraisers for former friends and the party. it is a silly thing. >> harris: if she were to run, could she beat donald trump? >> look, first off, she is not planning to run. >> harris: we heard you. >> we just saw represent polling that said joe biden would beat donald trump in 2024. so joe biden is going to be the nominee in 20 246789 he is the standard bearer for the democratic party and the rest of it is silly season. >> harris: you realize there are some republicans cheering hearing you say that. when you compare the former president and current president's numbers the ones

that pop the most are the ones that are extremely underwater on all the stuff he said he would do like covid, shut it down, all those things. so when you say he will run again, with a low polling vice president, i don't know, mercedes, does that do anything but give you joy? >> i think the biden administration -- it's a long time between now and 2024. things can dramatically change as we know in the political cycle. we call it short term memory in politics. so the reality is it's going to be an uphill battle for joe biden and for kamala harris to raise their poll numbers but you never know. we have to see what the political environment and economic environment looks like. what we know is going into the mid-term elections with the inflation numbers and the fact that people are feeling this covid fatigue, this economic

pressure, increase of prices, harris, i have to tell you that's where you have independents and some democrats and republicans lining up and saying we need some change and we need change in congress. >> harris: it is hard for the president and vice president to turn it around in time for 2024 if they are constantly arguing with a divided on the hill congress. let's get to this. california governor gavin newsom under fire after being seen with his mask hanging off his ear at sunday's rams/49ers game. a violation of his own state covid restrictions. the governor scrambleling to defend it. >> i was very judicious yesterday. you'll see the photo i did take where magic was kind enough, generous enough to ask me for a photograph, i released the mask and took the photo. the rest of the time i wore it as we all should. not when i had a glass of water or anything. i encourage everybody else to do so. that's it.

>> harris: thanks to the jumbotron. what was he doing there? some kind of dance. stadium fans could see the governor had his mask off for more than just a picture for magic johnson and i don't see a glass in his hand. why is the mask down? i don't know. but it is against his own restrictions. sariage. >> if magic johnson asked me to take off my mask i would. he won a landslide recall. >> harris: politics -- >> we need to normalize our politicians. >> president biden: by giving thaem slide on the rules we have to live by. you aren't making it better. >> take him at his word. >> harris: i'll take the

jumbotron. mercedes. >> california children not have to wear a mask in school. it is such a hypocrisy coming from this governor. let the children and parents make the decisions if these children should wear masks and that would be following the leadership of governor newsom of not wearing a mask. >> harris: or take all the children to the game with the governor so they can take their masks off. great to have you both.
