begin to see children's faces again in classrooms in those blue states. some of the others have not come on board yet. you can see in green which ones have, which ones in red. not their political party. those are blue states in red because they have mask mandates for children. however, the question is will those democrat governors follow? well, not if they are listening to the white house which is now weighing in. the president wants all states to follow current cdc guidance and continue masking children. the politics are terrible for president biden on this. we've seen the president publicly go after republican governors, greg abbott of texas and ron desantis of florida for letting the public decide for themselves if they want to wear a mask. and now he may have to answer to his own political party and countless americans who want what's best for their kids. >> on one hand politically he
8:02 am
wanted to push the problem to the states so if issues popped up he could blame governors. the worst of all scenarios. joe biden is not up to the job and not leading and worst of all our children are falling behind because of it. >> harris: the push is mighty against democrats who might want to win an election sometime soon. some are getting caught with masks down while the rest of us have to cover up. the "new york post" cover, they aren't wearing their masks, neither should our kids. free the smile. on social media a mom driving home the desperation many parents are feeling. >> she just said oh my god, hi, i didn't even recognize you. i have never seen your face before. layla has been in the class for 3 1/2 months.
8:03 am
this is dehumanizing, demoralizing. these teachers should see a human face. >> harris: we'll get into the politics with the president of the united states caught in the middle with trey gowdy in "focus" with reaction. first, though, for the very first time let's meet that passionate connecticut mom, jennifer orr. thanks for being in "focus" today. you describe what your children -- and you have a senior in high school, a fourth and second grade. you've seen it at different levels. you describe it as demoralizing and you have left a lot of people shaken. they say we know how she feels. why do you put it that way? >> i'm just so passionate about it because our kids have just been stripped daily of basic humanity. they are faceless. it doesn't make sense. we knew very early on that kids were not at risk for severe disease and for at least in connecticut our teachers have
8:04 am
had access to vaccines for the past 13 months. the beginning of school we were on our third booster for teachers. we have had things if place to keep the adults in the school building safe. we have had very little meaningful studies on the benefits of masking our kids. i can give you countless indignities that these kids are suffering daily being faceless. it makes no sense. i am speechless. >> harris: i know your son, because you described him as well, wears glasses and the story that you tell about the fogging of his glasses is just heartbreaking. >> it's very common. i hear constantly kids have to choose between seeing or not. they have to follow the rules. half the time i think masks aren't being worn properly anyway. they are pulling them down. but it just doesn't make sense
8:05 am
to choose between their vision or masking. and again what is this for? it isn't keeping the children safe. we know that children are not at risk for severe disease. so what is this for? exactly. nobody -- i really don't know and that's what i think we need to be asking. somebody needs to answer for this because the children have lost two years. my daughter is a senior in high school. she has not had a normal year since her freshman year. she has lost years of her childhood. they don't get that back. what are we doing? this is crazy. 37 other states have had choice. connecticut -- covid is not different in connecticut. this is not making any sense. the decision makers are so callous they throw us away. it is a mask. it's just a mask you are told constantly. it doesn't make any sense. >> harris: covid is not different in connecticut.
8:06 am
so true. a new study finds -- you mention the need for more science on this. a new study finds that children have a more difficult time recognizing faces that are masked than adults. study's author says if holistic processing is impaired and recognition is impaired, there is a possibility it could impair children's ability to navigate through social interactions with their peers and teachers. this could lead to issues forming important relationships. given the importance of faces to social interactions, this is something we need to pay attention to and added in on that study jennifer is our children could lose their sense of empathy toward one another. you have a young one. you are witnessing some of this. >> of course. this is how we communicate. our faces, our smiles. it is how we judge somebody's -- what they mean when they are speaking to us. are they serious?
8:07 am
being sarcastic? our children have no idea what a teacher means, are they being empathetic or serious or mad at us? they can't gauge anything in a classroom and also can't be heard. i have a second grader whose teachers is lovely i might add but he is constantly being told speak up, i can't hear you. after a while they don't want to talk in the classroom because they can't be heard. this is ludicrous. again, why? why are we doing this when 37 other states aren't? it makes no sense. >> harris: connecticut has joined delaware and new jersey just yesterday and oregon's health department but it doesn't happen immediately. new jersey doesn't happen until march 7th. so it is coming if the white house doesn't step in the way because they've already weighed in on this putting some pressure on some of those blue
8:08 am
states of which you live in. jennifer orr, blessing to you and your children. keep us posted. if anything slows down the process of unmasking your children let us know. the best to you for the rest of the school year, thank you. >> harris: let's get into some of jennifer's questions with someone i love to talk with about these issues. while parents anticipate a better way forward for their kids again is the white house going the try to block it all? >> guidance is clear, we recommend masking in schools. that is the recommendation from the cdc. as the president said i think during his press conference two weeks ago, a week and a half ago, you know, we certainly don't see this moment now as the new normal, right? and -- but we want to get to a point where we are not -- where covid is not disrupting our daily lives. >> harris: is any of that based on science? let's get into it now in "focus" trey gowdy host of sunday night in america.
8:09 am
former south carolina congressman. fox news, first welcome. get your reaction to jennifer orr and this interesting significant weigh-in by the white house. >> heartbreaking, harris. i live with a first grade school teacher. she absolutely loves her job. she loves her children but this has been the most difficult two years. not just for her but for other first grade teachers. i mean, we used to be able to rely on science. politics lets us down sometimes, organized religion lets us down but we used to be able to rely on science. now to this young mother's point, at one point we were told you cannot attend a wedding reception in virginia but you can attend one maybe in maryland or maybe the district of columbia. as you know, sometimes those things are separated by like a street. so how in the world can science
8:10 am
be different in virginia, from maryland, from the district of columbia? my fear is the greatest casualty of this pandemic will wind up being our ability to rely on science. we're in a culture where we need something we can rely in but the politics has trumped the signs. >> harris: you heard that connecticut mom say that covid isn't different in connecticut but her big question was -- this is what i want to hit you with the politics of it, trey. her big question was why? why are these predominantly blue states keeping masking on board? and those that are red states that have made it different, this president has gone after. he has targeted. why aren't you imposing masking for kids in schools per the cdc? what is your thought on the politics of it all? >> i really don't know, harris. because i think just like crime, the president is upside down. he is under water on this issue. so why -- crime is a perfect
8:11 am
example. it is a huge issue to 80% of the american people and yet he won't do anything about it. i don't know if it is this base politics, this constituent-based politics. look at the teachers unions. how long did it take for him to side with the students? when i was in the house all i ever heard about was how much the democrats love the children. i never heard -- there is a footnote, unless the children are in a battle with the teachers unions in which case we'll side with the teachers unions. look, joe biden knows no more about imnology or infectious disease than i do. that's not his training. someone is telling him this is the route to go and he needs to get rid of that someone. >> harris: i do want to get into where the president goes with democrats? if he comes out against desantis and abbott about
8:12 am
letting people decide on their own, will he go after democrats now? senator rand paul says democrats' covid mandates will only hurt their party. >> the democrats have overplayed their hands on the mandates. they'll lose their populous. they'll lose their public. i think this is a turning point. i think it is getting to the point where the science is clear, that the bulk and vast majority of masks people are wearing have no difference -- make no difference in the trajectory of the virus. >> harris: we see democrats one-by-one now phasing out their mask mandates for kids in schools. do we see more of that and what will biden do? >> depends on whether or not they are up for reelection. for many parents this is not a political issue. it is about the well-being of your children. sometimes in life, harris, something is necessary but painful. it is just necessary but painful. and then we have these things where you haven't convinced us of the necessity.
8:13 am
you have failed the burden of proving to us that this is necessary. and then you have the third category where it may be necessary, but what are the collateral consequences? what else are you doing to the children? i mean, we don't want kids to get covid but we also don't want them to go two years without learning and we don't want them to have social interaction issues and we don't want them to feel self-conscious about themselves. so it's the balancing of painful things. is biden going to criticize democrats? he ain't managed to criticize the d.a. in los angeles and new york so i will side with no on that one. >> harris: quickly, your reaction to seeing a parent that passionate and are you passionate, too. do you think most people feel that way and the white house doesn't see or hear it? >> i do. i think if every parent were like the young woman that you had on. so not spouting misinformation. she was very measured in the
8:14 am
way she presented it. i didn't hear her once lay claim to a conspiracy theory. i didn't hear her necessarily challenge motive. she is doing what is the most persuasive thing in the world saying it is not good for my child. i don't care about republican or democrat, this is not good for my child. and if you do that, then yeah, you are going to be heard by 80 something percent of america. stay away from the john f. kennedy, jr. will be the vice president. just stick with the facts. >> harris: the white house doesn't appear to hear them. trey gowdy. >> they will in november. >> harris: there it is, that part. trey gowdy, thank you for being in "focus." >> yes ma'am, thank you. >> what you're seeing is russia and all the dictators are seeing an opportunity this is the weakest president that america has ever had. if they were going to invade ukraine this is the time to do

some of the things we -- a number of the things. we need to do a better job. i need to do a better job pointing to the data on that so people can understand. >> harris: total crime in the city is up by more than 40% over last year. shootings up 30. car thefts nearly 100% up. they're a huge problem as you can see from the problems and quickly slide into a violent situation with someone outside the car trying to get into the car with a person in it. power panel now matt schlapp, acu and c pac chairman and laura fink. it is a critical point. i wonder where the tipping point will be on this, matt, politically. the citizens are already paying a huge price. >> yeah, this is part of the reason why almost 3/4 of americans believe the country is on the wrong track. i live outside washington, d.c. i now try the avoid going into
8:51 am
d.c. it is simply an unsafe place to be. it isn't just a new york city problem, harris, but exacerbated there. but this is a chicago and los angeles and san francisco problem. these big blue states in the major cities in these states, they had this war on cops and they made it sound like crime was some kind of a racial grievance. i think we're coming out of this hopefully and people realize we have to go back to some common sense. let's keep people safe and starts with locking up the violent criminals. not everyone, the violent criminals have to be locked up. >> harris: you hear all of that, laura, and it seems so basic and the president of the united states is just hear meeting with a brand-new mayor eric adams and yet there is a disconnect between the d.a.s in l.a. and new york and san francisco. the liberal d.a.s that want to elevate the system for the criminal and push the rest of us down to live with the crimes
8:52 am
that are being committed. how do we get everybody on the same page? >> i think you start with the facts. that is republican mayors in cities like ft. worth, texas, jack onville and miami are experiencing increases in crime also. senators on both side of the aisle in 2018 knew that when they passed reform for the first time and signed into law by president trump including things like early release. it sound like you are against. it included things like job training and included things like modified sentencing. look, crime is a problem. a durable problem throughout administrations and we have to look at criminal justice reform more broadly. ultimately up to 85% of those represented in state court of people charged with crimes qualify for the public defender. that means they're poor. let's stop grabbing at the top of the weed and pull it out by the root.

the roots of crime and the roots of the problem and not just have democrat bashing over the issues so important to americans. >> harris: i see where you are going with that and looking like places like macon, georgia where crime spiked so much but their municipality is democrat. i want to give you a chance to rebut that, matt and we'll move on. >> these policies of big cities is a dynamic in our country where almost every major city in this country is also true in red states are dominated not just by democrats but by the new radicalized socialist democrat which wants to make everything about racial grievances. it won't heal the country. the victims of the crimes are often people of color. >> harris: we'll move on. another democrat caught going maskless despite mandates. many of which they put in place. michigan congresswoman slotkin was photographed at a campaign

event without a mask surrounded by people abiding by michigan's rules because they have to. it comes after georgia democrat and governor candidate stacey abrams posed for a picture without a mask. "the washington examiner" with this. democrats think they're more important than you and your children. reverse order this time i will start with you, laura, your response. >> i think americans care about bigger things than somebody taking off a mask to take a selfie. they care about listening to their -- >> harris: i can tell you they don't. i can tell you they don't. you know why? democrat governors are capitulateing to the idea of taking masks off children in blue states because they've seen what will happen to them and their fellow democrats if they don't come the polls in november, right? so no, americans do care about the masking of children and consistency from our leaders to
8:55 am
walk out their own rules. matt, last word and we have to run. >> here is the thing. the biggest problem with this is the reason why stacey abrams wasn't wearing that mask. she knows that she was not harming anyone's health. the mask is a lie. it never was used to prevent anybody's death. >> harris: all right. we'll move on and come back another day. "outnumbered" is next. oh, that photographer? he's looking for something a little more zen, so he's thinking, “i'll open a yoga studio.” and as for the father of the bride? he's checking to see if he's on track to do this all over again...and again. digital tools so impressive, you just can't stop banking. (vo)hat would you like what makes my heart beat? having everything i want in the place i love.
