chance. >> it's worth a last chance. abraham lincoln, on right now on the history channel. two for editions coming. doris kearns goodwin, she really puts it in perspective. we need reminders like that. that will do it. here comes "the five." >> hello, everyone. i'm dana perino along with jesse waters, geraldo rivera, emily compagno. welcome to "the five." vladamir putin fueling fears of invasion as the standoff between russia and ukraine gets more tense. things changing rapidly. here's where we stand. russian troops are within three miles of the border and are in attack position. there was hope earlier today for a biden/putin summit to calm everything down but just hours
2:01 pm
ago putin declaring two break away regions of ukraine to be independent and saying the country should have never been separated from russia during the soviet union. president biden responding about to slap sanctions on those regions and the kremlin just announcing putin ordered russian forces to maintain peace in eastern ukraine but it is unclear if troops will enter. all that while the biden administration continues to warn that russian troops could cross into ukraine at any moment. >> every indication we see on the ground right now, in terms of the disposition of russian forces is that they are, in fact, getting prepared for a major attack on ukraine. >> we pwhroefrb that it could happen any day and that includes today. today could be that day. again, bill, we're seeing things in the intelligence realm that's certainly giving us concern about how close he is now to moving. every indication is that he's preparing for a large scale invasion. >> the biden administration being criticized over the way they handled this entire

situation. vice president kamala harris in germany this weekend, being accused of not being prepared. >> listen, guys. we're talking about the potential for war in europe. i mean, let's really take a moment to understand the significance of what we're talking about. our position is for us very clear. as a leader, which we have been, bringing together the allies, working together. these are some of the greatest sanctions, if not the strongest, that we have ever issued. it will exact absolute harm for the russian economy and their government. >> lot to cover. let's start with this. this is a call from jen psaki saying we have anticipated a move like this from russia and are ready to respond immediately. geraldo you have kamala harris talking about sanctions to come after the action.
2:03 pm
there will be debate at least whether some sanctions should have been put on ahead of time to prevent this. now we've just been told in our ears that peacekeepers are supposed to go and maintain peace in the new break away region. >> so it begins. i think whatever hesitation existed before, they must pull the trigger on these sanctions right now. by his assaultive language, by his moving his troops now within three miles of the frontier. they are mass armor. this is not like anything we have seen since world war ii. he must have 500 of those heavy tanks, besides the aircraft and everything else. he is prepared for invasion that won't stop until he gets to the nipir river which divides ukraine east to west. that's where they have the one bank of the river. he wants half that country right now. no telling. he could tell them to turn right
2:04 pm
and take those baltic states, the nato countries that were formerly part of the soviet union. this is a crisis. joe biden has to stand up and speak without a damn n-95 mask on that the vice president had. you couldn't hear her. you need captions to hear what the vice president is saying. at this difficult moment, i think it's politically correct at a worst possible time. this is now war. maybe it's not war that involves nato yet, but, for example, we cannot stand up against that armor, even the 82nd -- joey knows better than i. 101st. this is a mechanized major army, 190,000 strong. and now they are given the green light to cross over. it is like sudan in 1938. i hate comparing this to hitler
2:05 pm
and the nazis. when hitler insisted on the german speaking regions of czechoslovakia. he got the german speaking regions then moved his army into the rest of check slovakia. biden has to be stronger than he's ever been and work in concert with our nato allies who, thank god, have recognized the tiger is loose in the building. >> it's almost as if putin only thinks a unified germany could stand up to the fall of the soviet union. here's general jack keane. >> because he wants ukraine to look to russia and not to the west. but really, when it gets down to what he is talking about here, is that ukraine never should have been separated from the soviet union. it is a part of russia. i'm taking back the land that is rightfully ours. that is what this is about. >> taking it back could be quite
2:06 pm
violent. >> yeah, it looks that way. the problem is, we sit around trying to guess what does putin want? if greg were sitting in this chair he would say, why don't we call him? he's gonna call him if he does invade. if he does invade, are you not gonna call him? you're gonna have to figure this guy out. does he want the land or reassurances from nato? i hate to use a bad analogy. if you ever played texas hold em. one person is betting and raising. the other guy's just calling. that's what he's doing. two things. one is that guy doesn't have a good hand, the guy who's just calling and the guy who is betting either has a great hand or no hand at all. the guy betting is putin. the guy calling is president biden. >> that's a good analogy. >> don't let me forget it. the point here, joe biden is reacting. that's all he's doing. he's reacting. he's not leading. i'm not gonna beat him up on this and say he should have
2:07 pm
prevented this. it's not like it caught us by surprise. not like it's not been an issue for a long time. why sit every day all we hear is this kind of semantics. it going to be a proxy war? is this a land grab? is this a push to get nato out of the region? is it all of that? why can't our government answer that question? they don't know. >> it turns out what putin wants is what he's been saying he wants. the other thing that's happening is how it might hurt our economy as well. that is having to deal with energy. if there's anything we learned here, an energy policy is important. let's listen to kamala harris on that part and get your take. >> when america stands for her principles and all the things that we hold dear, it requires sometimes for us to put ourselves out there in a way that maybe we will incur some cost. in our weighs, that may relate to energy cost.
2:08 pm
>> i hope we take some lessons about our own energy policy out of this. >> gas will be $4 a gallon. it's probably going to $100 a barrel within the next couple weeks if this thing goes through. stock market's going to take a huge hit. with gas prices and oil going up, inflation's going to get much worse because it's tied to the dollar. have we been prepared as a country to stomach this? no. this is the first time anybody in the administration says what's happening in europe, this is how it's going to affect us here, americans in the home land. she's saying it with a mask on. no one ever even cares what she says. the president needs to come out without a mask and explain why ukraine impacts this country and why we need to care and what the hell is going on there and get us ready for this. because right now the american people are not ready for this. oil's going to go up. inflation will get worse. democrats in the media are going
2:09 pm
to blame russia. do you know what's going to happen? they just need another excuse, and that's fine. but that's not where we are. how did we get here? bill clinton forced the ukrainians in the early '90s to give their nukes back to russia. if he had just let the ukrainians keep the nukes, russia wouldn't have gone in. you don't invade a nuclear power. he forced the nukes back to russia and now they're sitting ducks for putin. also, the europeans totally went green here. they reduced nuclear. they reduced coal. they reduced exploring for natural gas domestically and they're sucking at the teet of putin. there's nothing they can do about it because they're putin's biggest customer. so that's also a problem. lastly, i'm trying to look at this subjectively. >> i can tell. >> since the fall of the soviet
2:10 pm
union, nato has aggressively pushed nato expansion into these former soviet territories. almost every decade nato adds another country. and even the last four years we've added two more countries. russia is humiliated by that. russia sees that as a huge threat. they don't see russia as a threat. nato sees that as a defensive move. these two forces disagree with that and they've been on a collision course ever since the soviet union crumbled. here we are today. the american consumer is gonna get destroyed by this and we don't know why. >> emily, then commercial -- not commercial. we just started. haven't had a break. right before the show you were speaking passionately about the innocent people who are very much in danger right now. >> it breaks my heart. the blame lies squarely on the shoulders of putin, but also biden. we have a perceived commander in

chief who has spent his time in office talking about perceived erosion of voting rights and taking direction from teachers unions and the cdc for masking kits. that's what our president has been focused on. you talked about this is the time to call on him to be clear and confident. i have no hope in it. we said there were hopes of a putin/biden summit. i had zero hope. i am frankly ashamed that he is the commander in chief. i am ashamed of the vice president taking that position. >> what position? >> the position that they are saying sanctions is a perceived strength when it's anything but. jennifer griffin pointed out, talked about russia. tomorrow february 22nd is known as the revolution of dignity in ukraine. that's a day of humiliation of russia. today is great significance there for putin. he reported in july, when putin had 21 page treatus essentially he was reading his play book
2:12 pm
talking about an attack, going back to russian leaders stalin. he said, why did they give up so much? he called it madness to give those republics land and the rights they gave up. he equated anti-russian sentiment verbally with holding weapons of mass destruction against russia. so i think to your point, this is absolutely predictable. the time to stop it was a really long time ago. that's why it was quiet during the past administration. >> i think you could go back several administrations and say more could have been done along the way in order to counter putin. >> i just want to talk about vice president harris. she probably keeps a mask on to hold down things. >> canada's crackdown on the truckers is far from over. what justin trudeau is planning next.
2:13 pm
2:17 pm
>> even though things can be resolving very well in ottawa, this state of emergency is not over. >> justin trudeau is not done going after the canadian truckers. police broke up the convoy and arrested nearly 200 protesters this weekend. ottawa's police chief said they will track down and punish anyone involved in protest. >> if you were involved in this protest, we will actively look to identify you and follow up with financial sanctions and criminal charges, absolutely. this investigation will go on for months to come. >> truckers who have not been

arrested are dealing with the fallout of frozen bank accounts and seized assets. >> they've taken my truck. i don't know where it is. on friday they locked up my personal and trucking business account. and also we have another business and they locked that account up, too, and it had nothing to do with it. >> gonna take everything from you because you spoke up. >> right. >> dana, you know about handling a crisis. communications. >> i can write a book of how not to handle a crisis and justin trudeau would be on the cover. what really bothers me is the gentle man you just saw. he has a separate business, has nothing to do with the protest and they seized those bank accounts as well. he can't make any sort of living. i think it's out ageous for them to say they are going to track people down for months. they left. they are no longer there. crisis, so to speak, is over. i also wonder about where are the pro bono lawyers to help
2:19 pm
challenge these accounts being seized. i don't know canadian law, but i would assume emily can say. there has to be some way to push back against that. think about all the celebrities that said they were going to move to canada if the former president was elected. i'll guess they are happy they live in a country where their property can be seized. >> talking about seizing bank accounts. one guy said they seized assets of a business that has nothing to do with his trucking business. this is retaliation. what would we do if the government came after us for exercising our 2nd amendment. >> that's why we have a 2nd amendment. >> you know, unfortunately, canada has a lot of british dna in them. they never rebelled against the

monarchy like we did. i only say this having been to canada twice. i looked into their legal system. it's not like like the freedom we have here. they don't take things seriously. their gun controls are hyper strict. you can't even leave your house with a handgun in canada. the government runs the health care system over there. hate speech is a crime. when we think of things happening in canada, it's not just some colder version of america. this is a radically different judicial system. we are shocked when we see that. seized asset of americans because you forged some checks or your back taxes haven't been paid with the irs. you donated to a peaceful protest. if that would happen anywhere in the northern hemisphere, it's crazy. so if america wants to be respected as a beacon of

police should come in. they didn't come in. it got ugly really quick. that hasn't happened up there. instead, most people left. the ones who didn't get arrested -- police chief gonna hunt you down and bring consequences. that's vindictive, is it not? >> the reason that your bar license was held up. your license is suspended, terminated or not instated if it is a crime for all purposes. protesting under protected free speech is not that. when you talk about inconvenience canadians suffered at the hands of these peaceful protester, that pales in comparison with having a voice. you do that vine lynn, geraldo, but this is people's livelihood, people's convictions. >> what about the livelihood of the autoworkers who didn't get their parts because these people closed the bridge? >> that's a minor inconvenience. >> he also doesn't want a

2:31 pm
have to take the subway. not everyone does. part of the plan in this state includes an expansion of a law, a 19d 99 statute that allows judges to force outpatient treatment for mentally ill people. my point is, a reason a lot of these laws are on the book is because of a horrific event, a tragedy, a life that was taken that resulted in a law to be passed to prevent those horrible tragedies to be done. a maniac child molester in los angeles that was heard gloating over the phone. the issue was the da, because he prosecuted him at the time as a juvenile, made the judge unable to do anything. judge basically said, my hands are tied. the da said, made a statement to fox news and said the level of remorse about the harm he caused the child. if i had known more, i would have handled things differently. >> why? >> the facts are what convey that. they don't need remorse to tell a da what they need.

i need a da to do their job. the kids who don't have a mom to attack the perp, they are relying on the da to enforce the laws. this has all been eroded thanks to democrats. >> in cleveland this weekend, we had the nba all-star game. one more thing today. my pal detective steve said they just closed another rite aid because of shoplifters gone wild with no enforcement, prosecution or consequence. my once nice safe neighborhood has gone to shat. two murders yesterday in cleveland during all star weekend. >> i walked to work the other day. posting nypd officers outside of walgreen's. think about the other things they should be doing. you got to do it because things are out of control. you talk about politicians sitting back and watching. you have a democrat da and mayor

2:34 pm
you have homicides in times square. this cannot happen in a city like this. politicians have to stop blaming guns and republicans and covid and blame themselves. >> i think one thing i remember from the old days, dana. the guardian angels are everywhere. maybe citizens have to fight back. maybe the old days have come again. >> a mom was trying to protect her kid. they shouldn't have to. >> they shouldn't have to. think about the fact that there's crime happening all across the country. the next step in the process in san francisco is for the liberal prosecutor there. he's up for a recall on june 7th. might not turn out the same way as the school board. all eyes could be on that. last thing i want to say, we were going to have this guest on this morning whose 9-year-old daughter was caught in the crossfire.
2:35 pm
never should have been shot but she was. babies are being hit. they are being killed. sometimes it's mistaken identity. sometimes it's because of a road rage incident. that is the kind of thing the social fabric really starts to crumble. you think about it. president biden came to new york to have his picture taken with mayor adams. it's about to be march 1st and this is not looking like it is going to get better. >> i have a 3-year-old daughter. if that happened to my daughter, the only person going to jail is me because i'm putting your soul in the grave, sending your soul to hell. when we go to war, we move our brothers and sisters. we do it to protect the innocence in this country. it really ticks me off to see our politicians not do the same thing. all you have to do is put a little bit of career collateral out there to put bad people in jail. when there's a whole class of americans willing to die to do
