washington. two putin's new year escalation. >> todd: and a massive russian convoy closes in, steve, what are you seeing? they coy small explosive just behind me a few minutes ago. it appeared to be a rush and drown taken out by ukrainian defenses. as you imagine, the peace talks about to get underway on the border between belarus and ukraine. the ukrainian delegation arriving by a polish helicopter. the president of ukraine not taking part in those talks. he is staying in kyiv with pretty low expectations. the main goal of those talks on ukraine side would be immediate cease-fire. people coming out of their houses for the first time in several days. the curfew has been lifted appeared some lines 50, 100 deep and people being stuck in curfew. the fighting overnight continues. more shelling of the capital city. fighting in the second largest

city and russian forces going in but unable to take control. this on fox, no major objectives achieved by the russian forces. and finally, president putin forces on high alert. he said he is responding to aggressive moves by the west, including economic sanctions, which absent the russian ruble tumbling. guys, back to you. >> carley: tonight feels different may be because of the nuclear talk or is it because of this amazingly as we are talking about nuclear weapons, this peace negotiation is getting underway, but volodymyr zelensky also said the next 24 hours could be the most critical time for his country. why do you think he feels that way? >> i think he feels that way because of three meyer russian tanks about 20 miles away on the way here. they already have a town in rubble, this capital city still

bursts into flame and the jelly would make it to whatever it made contact with. these people are working throughout the night stepping the rags and the bottles and transporting where the fighting is most intense. and the kyiv region. overhead video of a strike and this is a drone strike. a lot of discussion in the lead up to this impatient about the ukrainians having access to the turkish made their own. that drone has the ability to carry some smart tank missiles at this time. this appears to be the use of those drones. up to this point, we reported the russians had not gained any population center. there is reporting that is no longer the case. reporting said the russians have been able to get a foothold in a small town and very significant because that would ultimately give the russian forces this foothold to the south and east of the country and access to the

black sea. here in the town of lviv it is quiet but the primary activity out here has a lot to do with the refugees trying to get to the border. back up to the border 30 miles across and almost 24 hours. as you can see, it snowed last night so it's very cold out here and very tough on the refugees. guys, back to you. >> carley: live on the ground, thank you so much. one of the things unfolding about this five day advance of russian forces, russia has been really slow. if you look at february 26th, they are practically at the same map. exactly the same and mike tobin reporting russia has been able to capture one town were two towns rather. that is significant because you said they can now move in from the south and east of the country. but so far, there is frustration

on vladimir putin's part because of how slow the advance has been. >> todd: a couple of reasons for this, one, the thing that stands out most to me is the fact the russian forces do not have night vision goggles and that is live in the how far they can go. if you are only working 12 hours a day or however long it is, you remember any war that you and i have been around for especially the ones involved in western troops, that night capability which increased ability to move on a location. secondarily, we have heard multiple reports russian military is underfunded and underequipped highlighting the lack of putin's and how he thought it was going to be a cakewalk and corresponding resources into this. as a result he is not seeing what he wants. and we pop up any of those maps underscores the fact where they are being successful is as close

to russia as possible. then underscores the fact that they do not have the necessary supply lines, supply routes. obviously, we talked about supply chain crisis in the u.s. if the troops can't get their supplies, they can't fight and they can't veins. the supply chains is really the advantage they should have. >> carley: todd, and intelligence where 30 kilometers, which is 18 miles to the north of kyiv is at 3-mile long column of tanks that is heading towards kyiv. so 18 miles out and then you can intelligence also say despite continued attempts to suppress details of the conflict from the russian conflict for the first time been forced to acknowledge suffering and casualties. there you have fed. all right the u.s. responding to putin's decision to put forces on high alert. >> todd: nearly 4,000 u.s. troops in europe over an

what do you make a vladimir putin nuclear forces on high alert. >> good morning and thank you for having me. i want to say let's pray for the entire country of ukraine and all of the people battling hard and putting up quite the fight that president putin didn't expect. that is what we need to see out of the warriors, nato forces backing them. look, president putin is in such a bad spot that he's threatened to use nuclear forces. malcolm i am against foreign wars but we need to reinforce our nato ally members and give them the ammunition and weaponry they need to back these russians moving all across the multi-front war but make no mistake, we are the united states of america. i know joe biden is our president, but man, we have the best military fighting force in the world. i can tell you one thing, as i said immediately against foreign wars and we have seen throughout iraq and afghanistan. but this is something we need to take seriously. if he decides to use nuclear

weapons, i believe every option should be on the table for the united states government. he has a thug, murder and should be held accountable with being reckless like that. >> todd: max, to be clear you do not interpret this as simply empty bluster. you interpret this as a legitimate concern, correct? >> absolutely. we were talking as i said a vicious dog and vladimir putin. if you think that says, we need to take seriously and look, let's go back several weeks right now and president biden called it encouragement, a small encouragement but that was a road map to ukraine. we did nothing. in action is action in itself. why didn't we put sanctions on them immediately? why didn't we have a strong show of force? this is what i will tell you. putin has advanced his troops in the last 12-16 years among two presidents. president obama and president biden. and it never happened under

president trump, why? we executed and our administration peace through strength. that is not what we are seeing right now. we have weak leadership and the entire world knows it and that is why you are looking at china possibly mobilizing against taiwan. after that my biggest concern is, what happens the state of iran get so emboldened they attack one of the greatest allies of israel? no you are looking multi-front war? they were so many things that can happen out of the situation. we need stronger leadership at this time from president biden and this administration. shifting to this green fantasies and that is what they are, all green fantasies. we need to reopen the keystone pipeline and energy independent once again with president trump and really crush russia. locum if we are so serious about the sanctions, why are we still buying crude oil from russia? nothing adds up era. they are not taking the situation seriously. they are putting the united states in jeopardy as well as the entire world. the worst thing about it, it

doesn't have to be. speak to ukrainian foreign minister say, needs to stop buying russian oil because it is ukrainian blood. but we see the sanctions imposed on russia starting to kick in. and so just give it a few days before worthless apple pay is going to start working in russia. so it is sort of split. i guess you could say the united states could be going further with sanctioning oil and gas but also, do we see the sanctions working? >> i mean come i think you are seeing more but the problem will not work fast enough. ukrainians, how much time do they have? you heard president zelensky say the next 24 hours are crucial. welcome with the sanctions in the next 24 hours will it be enough to cripple the economy and they don't move forward? as you are talking, they have a hard time with supply issues. and as a marine come if you don't keep your supply chain operational and running, you

will lose the war and the moralf your men and women that you are fighting for is going to drain. that is what we are seeing. the russians are yet to gain air superiority. this is something we thought they would be able to get within, you know, maybe 2-3 days. i don't know with the russian military have made in the enhancements, but i can certainly tell you they are facing a strong ukrainian forces fighting back for their lives. i want to add one thing, president zelensky needs to be very careful when he enters negotiation with president putin. as i said before, we know what putin wants and he will go to any extent to get what he wants. that is why you are seeing him threatening and activating his nuclear forces as well as looking at belarus and troops to move into ukraine. he needs all the help in the world to get to. i'm thinking -- i'm not thinking what you are seeing is an aggravated unstable leader who is willing to go to the ends of the earth to get what he wants. >> carley: it is also amazing

and they have a nuclear button and would have deployed him. they would never allow anyone to accumulate in their own head. they would belittle them and they don't care if they destroy the whole world to prove their point. so, i think we are dealing with someone who has to be removed now, immediately! all this negotiations, the ruble, no-fly zones, sanctions, all of that is good, but i don't think it affects him and a bit. we are dealing with a dangerous man. i don't want to set up panic, but somebody has to do something. the ukrainian people and not necessarily the government or the reporters or the elite but people upset with president biden. they say that he promised that putin if he becomes president would be removed and not last too long. he would not be gentle with him as trump was. now they are saying that he betrayed them.

underway on the border between belarus and ukraine. it is likely the two sides are extremely far on this site as we about to have peace negotiations and also penned a major attack on the capital city so it is a tough situation to be in. it is likely the russians will be asking for complete surrender for ukrainians to lay down their arms and ukraine is looking for a cease-fire and russian forces to pull out. the two sides very far apart from each other, but the hope is at least for a cease-fire. that is not looking good right now. the city of kyiv, the capital was hit again by artillery and missiles overnight. some of the heaviest fighting taken place in the second largest city of kharkiv street to street battles going on in that city. by the end of the day, the russians not in control on day r objectives on the ground. of course, that could change because three-mile convoy of russian tanks and artillery

about 20 miles outside of the capital hitting into what could be a much bigger increase in the firepower used in this fighting. guys, back to you. >> carley: day 5 and many would fall into days, steve we will check back in with you soon. meanwhile in these russian forces capturing two towns and the east and ukrainian forces continued to hold the key cities. >> todd: live in lviv, mike. >> what we are getting from british intelligence the bulk of the fighting that came down from belarus borders held about 20 or 18 miles out of the center of kyiv. that is primarily because ukrainian fighting forces have done such an effective job at resisting. particularly as it relates to the battle at the airport that would have been a key location for the russians to gain a foothold. they can resupply troops and ammunition, food, everything they would need. but the ukrainians are in control of that airstrip. the resistance isn't just the

fighting forces. the resistance reaches out to the general population. we caught up with a group in a warehouse district in lviv making molotov cocktails. old liquor bottles filled with petroleum's and soap shavings and combined with petroleum to make like a jelly and has an effect when the fire bomb breaks open and the bottle breaks open. all of the jelly acts like napalm and sticks to whatever it goes to. they package that stuff and sent it off to kyiv where the people are deeply engaged in fight can use that against the russian fighting forces. we have talked with the people who are part of this underground resistance, and they say they are grateful for the support they are getting from the west. >> we will stay strong for freedom and for the democratic world. and we want you to assist us as much as you can them. we very much appreciate the support.

>> we can show you overhead video now of a strike on a russian armored column outside of kyiv. the information we have right now is ukrainian fighting forces want to make use of this turkish made tv 2 drone. they had excess before the invasion. what was interesting about the drones, they have the ability to carry four smart antitank weapons each. it appears as video of this strike on the russian column was indeed the use of one of those turkish made tv 2 drones. up to this point come over port of the russians unable to gain a foothold in any population centers. there was reporting that is no longer the case. there was a couple of small towns, and these are to the east and south of the country, particularly as it relates to this area the russian fighting forces access to the black sea, water and access to resupply the spirit guides, back to you.

>> carley: you just reported russian forces have taken control of those territories. does that mean that the tide might be turning? >> will, keep in mind this is reporting they have gained control and often times we have seen these towns and even when we talk about the airport they are that the russians have it and ukrainians gained it again. so when you report they have control of an area, nothing is final until the war is over but if they do have the ability to gain a foothold in resupplying, that can change the tide. >> carley: very interesting. >> todd: like tolman, thank you very much. let's bring in the ambassador to ukraine now on this very latest developments. john, do you see any hope in the peace talks? >> no. i suspect all will be in place to say surrender on our terms. and the troops in ukraine, and

played this out. >> todd: even under circumstances, five days of not coming close? >> i think that is why he will push harder. and this situation two or three months from now being realistic about it, he's only committed about half of the forces of ukraine's border of the fight. so unfortunate to play out a little bit longer. >> todd: how should we, the u.s., respond to the nuclear part of the threat from putin? >> well, i think we need to send a message we have nukes too and we will not be intimidated. >> we have daggers drawn with the soviet union three times and 48 and 61, and we defended and are not intimidated but putin is trying to intimidate our spirits going to put you on the spot, what do you know about our ability to shoot down a nuke?

we are not close to that my people are looking it up online so i figured i would answer the question. >> we do have some capacity but i would not overstate it. and russian defenses. so they know if they launched and would destroy it. the crises in the past. >> todd: as the former u.s. ambassador to ukraine you know the ukrainians and you know their heart. and you know the people but does the the resistance surprise you in anyway? >> know and i expect it and people to fight alongside the army in the air force such as it is. in the military performed in superb fashion. of course, we also know the russian troops were not really prepared for war. peacekeepers and they said there would be no resistance and of course, there is resistance. ukrainians are fighting for liberty. they were fighting for sovereignty. >> todd: who are up in canada, closing airspace and breaking

from long-time neutrality to defend weapons to ukraine. let's focus on europe for a moment. is europe doing enough? >> the short answer is yes. we are all surprised by germany. the fact that the germans are sending hundreds of thousands of stingers and javelins. other nations, you mention sweden, the midlands, belgium, this is substantial. the sanctions we put down on russia with the e.u. will make them pay and overtime. i just think we need to find ways to get more weapons into ukraine to make sure we have a steady supply so the ukrainians will stop russian tanks. >> todd: with that in mind, john is this the wake-up call that europe does need to really get their act in gear and say "hey, going forward we need to present a robust defense to the world?" >> i think so. look, i've been reporting eight years and the russians with ukraine, they want to restore

it? >> i think they would assess the ukrainian response as robust and concerning. i think they would look rhetorically at the west's response. look, you are reporting on it vladimir putin is not when a favor worldwide the chinese communist party does not care about the strategic goals and play. i think they are watching carefully and they see that the west is reticent to deal with the issue at hand. they are living ukraine deal with this particularly and sending some arms but a lot willing to get themselves and get their own hands dirty. i think trying at the communist party of china is watching carefully. i think they will probe the perimeter so to speak, probe to see what we will do. what are responses in taiwan. we have seen that with them behind war planes in taiwan, they are space. saying this will be a continuation this practice forward. >> carley: president biden

say that america needs to be strong. obviously, put some meat on the bones to that. one of the course corrective actions knowing the american people are not very happy with the direction of the country. some things need to be reversed. sometimes they just made the wrong decision and move on. this worshiping the odds of the green new deal and making america energy dependent on our adversaries. right now we are buying 500 to 1 million barrels a day from russia. i don't know if most americans know that. there is no need for any of that. we should be producing our own oil and put on the open market so that not only our gas prices at the pump go down but vladimir putin doesn't have extra money for this excursion into ukraine. that is one of the reversals that absolutely needs to happen. the president absolutely needs to address that in the state of the union. >> carley: now he will bring up the fact the united states by russian oil sales but a lot of americans, congressman, would
