am with him and his team. >> dana: ben niemann, i believe it's just after midnight in the ukraine. give us the latest from your point of view, benjamin. >> the end of the eighth day of this -- every day has been worse than the last. the russians have captured this first major city in the south of the country, down by crimea, about 280,000 people in the city. tanks have rolled into the city and russian soldiers are pursuing the streets. they say if they submit to russian rule their town will not be destroyed. going for multiple sites: the north, south, east, and controlled territory in each of them. considering the scale and number of troops coming in, it's likely they will continue to take territory, despite the brave efforts of ukrainian defenders. it's -- at least 33 civilians were killed in strikes, and in this city, russian forces are fighting for control of europe's

largest nuclear power plant, moving towards her with tanks. speaking today, president zelenskyy was defiant. >> we revealed every dominic >> president zelenskyy: we are looking at every house, every city. payback full price for everything you did to us, to our country, and to every ukrainian. >> reporter: kyiv is in russian insights, the convoy is about 50 miles north. it has installed. some people say that's a logistical and supply issue. nevertheless, it appears russia is continuing its advance to use artillery. there's been more shelling in the capital over the last few days. engulfed in smoke and flames today. they will soon work on encircling it. this has had a huge human toll: 1.1 million people, the u.n. say, have fled this country in eight days alone.

the work continues to get worse. we are seeing putin it out and hit the targets of centers and residential areas. >> dana: i wanted to ask, the reports true that there will be a civilian route out to provide safe passage for pavilion civilians. it comes back to the point, time and time again, within this conflict, when reporting tries to negotiate with one hand and escalate with the other. perhaps, there's trying to find a solution. not hope of a cease-fire anytime soon, but this is a positive development.

>> jeanine: benjamin, when you talk about the increasing terror and violence by the russians, we are now, and even zelenskyy said we were a little late to the game -- when talking about the united states. it appears that even though the western side of ukraine is open, does it seem that it will become more and more difficult for russian countries to bring in tanks and ammunition? do you see russia starting to come in on the western border, in addition to the north, south, and east? >> judge, it's a good question. at the moment, the ukrainian resistance and the government are being kept alive by their supplies, which mainly come from poland, through the west. those are the javelins, the singer's comedy ammunition they need, and the medical supplies and other supplies. so yes, people are looking to see whether there is a convoy of

"washington post" -- in a relatively extensive article, up to 16,000 foreign volunteers, like a foreign legion is forming in the west to go and get minimal training, go to the front and some of the other eastern cities. if you've heard or seen anything about this -- with people from the united states, from the u.k., even japan, canada, aside from belarus and georgia. >> a lot of people are talking about this, and -- remarkable, the british government has made it legal for people to join the fight. people may be part of operations like that. they say the ukrainian government have agreed to have them here, the british government have okayed it. many of those are ex-military, but there are people who want to try to protect liberty and freedom. we've seen people coming in this

direction. people want to fight and join against isis. some of them were charged with terror offenses. that was never made legal. this is very different already. saying "go" if you want to, you can go fight. whether they form their own civil defense units -- i think some of that will work out. expect to see quite a lot of foreigners coming this way going to fight. >> benjamin, the shelling taking place at the capital, does that happen 24/7? does it happen just overnight, during the day? wondering if there's any rhythm, routine, regarding these attacks and the civilian population, able to get used to that and live their life. >> it's limited. they have been showing some of the videos, significant damage,

but no, throughout the day, if you want to look at cities like kharkiv, the country's second largest, that's out of -- at the moment. also so much with also so little -- he was held back, and so i think he has readjusted, learned from his mistakes, and is now focusing on areas. block capital kyiv, it remains to be seen if they will come around completely. they have used starvation and seizures in the western part. might start off by doing that. no doubt, this is the crown jewel for him to capture. you can hear behind me, it's calm at the moment. the shelling seems to pick up in the evening. bomb shelters or subways. not only in the capital kyiv, as i was driving through the country to get here chemistries

>> i want to tell you what we think is happening today, what we think the aims of the russian military have been throughout today. in the north comments pretty much of a stalemate. all the action today has been in the south. we will show you -- this was critical. you know what happened with crimea in 2014 through the russian invasion have been there took that area. what they did not take was -- based on the reports we are getting, this has been hammered 24 hours a day. it appears the town is surrounded. crimea was a russian base, able to fortify the military there for the past 8 years. the russians gave that "go" signal, and they went right for. they run the town. it's largely russian speaking. putin and his army are trying to

take this area. what would they do next? we had a report that the mayor of this city said that the russians have taken by the city. some other defense officials are suggesting that wasn't the case. the dash this river runs here, and the city is at the mouth of it. any traffic going up and down could be controlled. where would you go next question at the town of odessa to the west, has a million people, one of the top five in population for the entire country. it appears evident, based on the activity of the day, you have to rule the south, cut off the waterways, and perhaps security area and make the move toward the middle of the country towards the capital city of kyiv. we believe that the russian military -- for the most part, it has pretty much stalled out. there's been significant heavy

fighting. it's 16-20 miles, give or take from kyiv to the outskirts. a lot of people are wondering about this convoy. it's 40 miles long, sitting there every day. there have been a list of ten different reasons. to be honest, no clear reason as to why it's here. it started at the airport, and then it runs up this road, but small town of 40 miles. the center of the city is roughly 16-20 miles to the southeast. our pentagon believes that the strategy on behalf of putin -- we believe based on the reporting that we have been getting that the idea is to encircle the city of smoke out as many in the military as you can along the way. we've seen that strategy already play out in multiple cities. one of them is in the northeast.

kharkiv -- you've seen the video, right? decimated. if you look at kharkiv on a map, you can see the ring of roads that surround kharkiv. not exactly a circle, but close. we believe that's where the russians are trying to clear out that town in an ongoing effort. 1 million refugees and poland, romania, hungary, and parts of eastern europe taking them in. we are trying to figure this all out. >> thank you. we will take around for questions. it just occurred to me that no one knows about the conflict, could it be a protest against covid mandates?
