benjamin hall in kyiv with the latest on the attack at the nuclear power plant. benjamin. >> right, good morning. the real concern over this attack, as it is europe's largest nuclear station. yesterday they were fighting to control it. russian tanks moved in and shells were fired in the station took a direct hit. a fire broke out i couldn't be put up because of the fighting, firefighters couldn't get close to it. that fire is now out but come as you say, the russians control this nuclear power station. the fire has been extinguished, but it's concern is what might happen next, what they intend to do with that. there are reports that chechen fighters are layering that power station with mines. you heard president zelenskyy that if there is something that happened there there could be a disaster that dwarfs chernobyl. >> to all the people that know chernobyl, who know how much grief the explosion at the power

senior retired strategic analyst, four-star general jack keane. i did know they had six separate facilities there. five in the ukraine. i didn't know one had six reactors and was the biggest in europe. as this one right here. were you surprised that russia hit it? is your gut that they did it on purpose? >> well first of all that's 50 nuclear reactors a new grade at four different sites. this is the largest one given there are six reactors there. it certainly part of russia's plan to take control of the power that is in ukraine. they tried to take it off the grid using cyber and it hasn't worked and we don't know exactly why. because they displayed the capability to do it before. this is part of their plan. they want to shut the power down in the major cities. it's absolute insanity to get into a gunfight at a nuclear power facility that has six reactors. now we do know that the

mayra, thank you so much for being here. we heard a portion of what the mayor said at the conference. what is he saying to you as you are in full contact with him? >> first of all, it is incredibly emotional to be able to communicate with him. he is equivalent what i am in the united states, the president of ukrainian mayors so it was emotional to have 50 of the most common mayors in the country from all parties expressing solidarity with the mayor and honestly any underestimation's of putin was that this would unify the world and also unify the country, which as we know is bitterly divided politically. one is that we stop buying anything that has to do with russia. we continue to continue with economic pressure on russia. frankly he asked candidly for

defensive weapons, something that, you know, the world has been supplying him and obviously they need more to be able to defend against the sophisticated weaponry they are facing. >> mr. mayor, can you imagine as a mayor having to do the types of things, make the types of decisions he's making surrounded by the russian army? >> you know, one of the things i've contemplated a lot as i've been in communication with him over the last few days how we had to come to terms with some reality, but we haven't thought about it for decades, the possibility of a nuclear attack. the possibility of a nuclear war. and we start thinking about the peace in this country and start thinking about this family how they could be gone in a second. and it really, number one, it raises the stakes after what is happening in ukraine and number two it makes you love this country and love the peace and security that we live in day in and day out. i can imagine what the mayor is

forced to engage in and the last month. >> lieutenant upton the same question to you, what is your understanding of the folks you trained what are they doing right now as they face an onslaught from the russian army? >> yes, similar to what the chief said. i meant in daily contact with many of them either through various social media outlet or some other various avenues and they are all out there making and rounding up russians. troops and some have two deal with some issues within their cities. and they are on the front lines. the chief spoke and many of them are responding to the blasts and the buildings. i've been to kyiv numerous times and kyiv is a lot like new york city. it is a very vertical sedan like houston with single-family houses.

beginning of those willing to flee? what is your advice to people on the ground? >> pete, we do. we tell our clients we are not thinking in terms of days or weeks but we are thinking in terms of months. with that being said, a majority out and end phase 2 large-scale local nationals. the biggest change recently on the ground is we are now going from mass movement of 205 people a day to now where we are saying the missions if you will become a more precise people and more dangerous locations, locations more difficult to access. so, that is as we move through the next phase, we will continue to see that. >> pete: is the time window closing as the russians get closer to kyiv and quarters are not open to the western part of the country? how do you factor that in? >> it is, pete, obviously it is
