10:01 pm
for the first time. and russian president vladimir putin sparking concerns tonight over a new red terror giving stalin speech in moscow praising his military as the indiscriminate bombardment of ukrainian cities. continuums. god is with me right now. he's with us and he says don't be afraid. the pastor of a church in kyiv preaching as he hears explosions in the distance. we'll share with you the message of hope that he's spreading while the basement of his church turns into a bomb shelter. we begin tonight on the grounds of the fauci where co-anchor for this hour, chief correspondent jonathan hunt joins us now. jonathan, what's the latest? mike ? good morning to you from lviv, ukraine, where the russian bombardment and blockade of cities continues across this country. it has been another day of violence through friday.
10:02 pm
the guns appear to be silent. the missiles do not appear to be coming at this point on saturday morning. but friday saw a lot more violence in the capital kyiv. again, it was heavy shelling. that shelling coming largely from tanks which are stalled as we understand it at the closest about nine miles from the city center of keep. but that is plenty within range of those tank guns. obviously kyiv has seen missile strike after missile strike two and the targets continue to include civilian ones that were civilians killed and injured again on friday as there have been almost every day now of this three plus week war here in lviv, just about 24 hours ago we heard the air raid sirens and then the explosions rumbled across this city. as for cruise missiles slash into an area near the airport,
10:03 pm
the russians had fired six , but two of them were taken down by air defense systems. the russians said they were hitting an aircraft repair factory that was being used to repair ukrainian air force mig fighters. the ukrainians said nobody was there. there was no such activity. one person was wounded in that strike. meantime, the peace talks continue but painstakingly slowly. president zolensky has said they need to gather pace and he said for the sake of anything, the russian troops need to need those peace talks to succeed so they stop being killed in this country. ukrainian putting the russian casualties, the deaths as high 14000 other estimates are somewhat lower than that . but it is clear, mike , that the russians have suffered great, great losses, significant casualties. jonathan hunt live and we will be back to you a lot this hour.
10:04 pm
thanks, jonathan. in moscow friday, vladimir putin headlined a huge rally praising his country's troops as they continue pounding ukrainian cities with shelling missiles. correspondent dan springer has that story tonight . good evening. yeah. hey, mike , this was bizarre. it was like a chilling scene out of nazi germany back in the nineteen thirties. russian president vladimir putin in a filled stadium with tens of thousands of people cheering and some waving russian flags. putin, who has rarely been seen in public in recent weeks, took the stage in moscow and delivered a speech friday that was part pep rally and all propaganda about the invasion of ukraine. he said, quote, we know what we need to do, how to do it and at what cost and we absolutely will accomplish all our plans. he talked about the soldiers helping each other in unity. the country has not seen in a long time. and again, he falsely claimed that the operation was necessary because russia had to defend against of russian speaking people by ukraine.
10:05 pm
but this whole thing looks to be nothing more than a show to prop up public opinion in russia. the bbc is reporting that many people were pressured to attend, especially those who work in the public sector. around the stage you can see signs that read for a world without naziism and for our president. meantime, thousands of people continue to protest the war on the streets of moscow and elsewhere in russia and many are getting arrested for it. there's one report that police have arrested 15000 people since making it a crime to protest the invasion. there's video of people getting arrested for holding blank pieces of paper at rallies and maybe the gutsiest protest of the week took place in a tv studio where an editor held a no war sign behind the anchor . it also said russians are being lied to and people should join russians against the war. that brave woman was in court tuesday and refused to retract her statement. she's being fined two hundred eighty dollars but she is expecting more charges.
10:06 pm
mike springer live in seattle tonight . dan , thanks a lot. >> in a nearly two hour video call with china's president xi jinping friday, the white house says president biden laid out clearly what the consequences would be if china provides military financial assistance to russia, although the president apparently stopped short of making specific requests of beijing, china has to make a decision for themselves about where they want to stand and how they want the history books to look at them and view their actions. and that is a decision for president xi and the chinese to make. president biden is scheduled to travel to europe next week for talks with nato leaders. >> there is growing concern tonight that with russian forces appearing stalled on the ground in ukraine, vladimir putin may soon threaten to use nuclear weapons against the west. white house correspondent kevin corke has the latest tonight . good evening, kevin. evening to you. mike now the director of defense intelligence is warning tonight that russia faces
10:07 pm
more and more resistance in ukraine and the kremlin now facing that may ultimately rely on a threat of nuclear weapons . this from lieutenant general scott berrier who rode to a house armed services subcommittee on intelligence, quote, as this war and its consequent slowly weakened russian conventional strength, russia likely will increasingly rely on its nuclear deterrent to signal the west and protect strength, make that project strength through its internal and external audiences. now the russians, for their part, remain largely stalled on the ground and they're becoming more reliant on missile attacks as we saw earlier today with the attacks over and lavae. meantime, the u.s. is sharing intelligence with ukraine, a process that u.s. defense intelligence chiefs are describing as revolutionary. >> i would say that the intelligence that we are sharing and the work that we're doing to support the ukrainian government is making
10:08 pm
a difference. it's accurate. it's timely and it's actionable. >> still, ukraine's president says he needs more weapons and he needs them right now, although with that we will remind some western leaders even louder that this will be a mole defeat for them and destroy the prestige if ukraine does not receive advanced weapons, that will really save the lives of thousands of our people. meantime, defense secretary lloyd austin was in slovakia thursday there. his counterpart said he'd send ukraine as 300 surface to air missiles. that's a system that can shoot down aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, even ballistic missiles. also today we learned that the dutch defense ministry said it would then install patriot missiles in slovakia so the slovaks could then send those three hundreds over to defense batteries in ukraine. a clear indication, mike , that yes, there's a building coalition working to arm the ukrainians. fascinating to watch kevin corke live here in washington. kevin, thanks very much.
10:09 pm
israel is warning the united states against making concessions to iran in order to obtain reworked nuclear deal , specifically the possibility of removing one iranian military unit from a terror watch list. senior national correspondent richard cohen has the details tonight from the state department. israeli prime minister naftali bennett and foreign minister yair epeat are warning the united states to keep iran's islamic revolutionary guard caught listed as a foreign terrorist organization. they write the irgc is a terrorist organization that has murdered thousands of people, including americans. we find it hard to believe that the irgc designation as a terrorist organization will be removed in exchange for a promise not to harm americans as the u.s. is on the cusp of a new nuclear agreement with iran, american allies in the middle east have largely remained silent on the administration iran policy on the positioning themselves to try to hedge or leverage silence after a deal to get some kind of better arrangement weathertech arms
10:10 pm
security, economic ties or anything to counter a rising iran. though they may be saying more about the administration's iran policy in other ways. saudi arabia has invited chinese president jinping to visit the kingdom. the saudis are also considering pricing some of their oil in china's currency instead of dollars, according to the wall street journal, both significant moves away from washington and towards beijing . >> hedging may be a way to send a message to washington that it's pro iran policies that to have some consequences. >> five years ago, then-president trump made saudi arabia his first foreign trip and his administration fostered a much closer relationship with saudi leadership. the biden administration has been much more critical of saudi arabia's human rights record and its war against the houthis in yemen. the administration also argues the irgc has grown more aggressive since then. president trump withdrew from the twenty fifteen nuclear deal . >> the status quo where we stand has nothing to make us safer in any regard. in fact, the islamic
10:11 pm
revolutionary guard has only been strengthened. opponents argue a new nuclear deal would only give iran more money to fund the irgc. an agreement would also only address iran's nuclear program ,not the irgc activities or iran's ballistic missiles at the state department. richardson, fox news. thank you , rich. let's send it over to jonathan in live tonight . jonathan? thank you , mike . and let's discuss the latest developments here in ukraine and the russian threat potential to the international community with retired army lieutenant colonel and chuck devor along with former national security council chief of staff fred flight. thanks for being here, gentlemen. and chuck, let me get to you first. we talked a lot about how the russian ground forces at least appear to be stalled. they are pound ukraine though from the air. where do you see this developing over the next 48 to 72 hours in terms of military action?
10:12 pm
well, i don't see the russians generating much in the way of offensive capacity on the ground. the ukrainians are also conducting multiple successful local counterattacks. i suspect that will continue. and the airstrike on lévy i think is the most significant development. it is said that those missiles came from a submarine so their submarine launched cruise missiles. those are dual capable. in other words, they can have both high explosive and nuclear warheads. so by sending those missiles to lviv, vladimir putin may be reminding nato that he has nuclear weapons and the ability to deliver them. yeah, fred was picking up on that. we talk a lot about the potential nuclear threat, the potential threat from a chemical weapons strike. do you genuinely believe that president putin backed into a corner would go that far
10:13 pm
? i think if he was backed into a corner, he might go that far . but right now i don't think he's seriously considering it. and i believe statements we're hearing by the bush administration about chemical weapons are really overblown. but i do believe that putin will use the prospect of nuclear war to keep us out of this conflict, to keep nato from intervening. but i mean, there's some talk that maybe putin would use chemical weapons against cities. i don't think there's any very low chance he would do that because i mean, talk about being a pariah this would cost him any possibility of a negotiated settlement. i think it would cost him whatever support he has from china. and let me come back to you on military supplies from nato countries including the united states. we're getting a lot and obviously president solinsky or once more the russians now saying that they will target those convoys. they hit a weapons convoy
10:14 pm
that includes weapons, say from the united states or from germany or from the u.k. where does that take us ? does that involve does that mean nato has to act? well, it depends on where the strike takes place. if it takes place in a nato nation, then most likely yes, if it takes place over the border in ukraine, then definitely not you drains a large place in the border with both poland and with romania is fairly long and extensive. there are plenty of highways and railways and secondary roads in . in addition, the russians are having great difficulty with their targeting and they are not able to get actionable intelligence and feed them to their weapons systems rapidly. you're generally seen strikes on fixed locations. hitting a moving convoy would be very difficult at at distance. fred, i want to get to you a little bit on president putin's state of mind, though.
10:15 pm
we have those really disturbing comments earlier this week about cleansing russian society, about those who oppose him being scum and traitors. as you sit on something like the national security council of people looking at him thinking this is a guy who has lost the plot and this seems to be moving in the wrong direction, comment about self cleansing, society of traitors and other crazy comments he made. you know, this looks like someone who may be thinking about a major escalation because i think he's being backed into a corner. and as i said earlier, i think it is so essential that we have to have some type of diplomatic off ramp here and that's going to be hard for the ukrainians because they may have to offer something. but look, this is a megalomaniac with the largest nuclear arsenal on earth. we should not be backing in a corner. and i thought president biden for calling him a war criminal. you and i can do that .
10:16 pm
but the united states needs to be able to negotiate with, with the president of russia. yeah. chuck, can you build an off ramp for somebody you've already called a war criminal? it does make it more difficult and it certainly increases the stakes on both sides. one of the things i'm concerned about, though, is that the russians may agree to a temporary sanam assist and wait until the ground in ukraine begins to firm up around the end of may or the beginning of june. right now we're in the middle of what's called rasputin's of the mud season and it makes it very, very difficult for the russians to have crosscountry mobility for their tanks and for the resupply columns. yeah, chuck devall, fred flights, great to get your insights, gentlemen, as always. thank you so much with us and our special coverage of the war continues. >> live from ukraine next ,

10:22 pm
and i'm jonathan hunt in living. jonathan, we're seeing a lot of refugees coming out of mariupol in southern ukraine. what's the latest there? yeah, that mike is one of the worst situations we have seen throughout this now three and a half week old war. mariupol is a city of about 400000 and most of those were trapped when the russian bombardment began. we have seen that terrible shelling of a theater in mariupol that's still trying to dig out those who may have survived. and we are seeing thousands of refugees get out something like twenty to thirty thousand have made it out, but that is only about one in ten of those who are stuck there with no water, no power and pretty much no food either. meantime, the united nations says nearly six and a half million people inside ukraine have been displaced on top of the three point two million that have fled the country in poland tonight isha hasni is
10:23 pm
there with an extraordinary report on some of those refugees. here's isha hasni inside a safe house in poland, ukrainian refugee katerina sobs as she explains she hasn't held her husband for more than three weeks. she fled in their hotel ukraine just before the russians fired missiles at the nation's largest nuclear power plant located there and took control of her husband whose identity we're protecting supervises the department in charge of cooling the nuclear reactors and was inside the night. it was the most terrible night of my life as katerina worried for miles away, her friend margaret was underground bracing for a nuclear disaster denuke well, we had prepared anti radiation pills in the basement. thankfully the power plants employees were able to keep the plant stable. katerina says the staff are
10:24 pm
heroes put in an unbelievable position for dunja chicca. my husband is working at the nuclear power plant occupied by russians and the soldiers are walking there with guns. why? why, why are all these things happening? and even though it means her family is separated, her husband continues to do his job to keep his family and millions of others safe in the control. and you will but it would be a huge tragedy for europe and not just for our city if something happens there, even poland would not be able to save its people. the international atomic energy agency has expressed grave concerns about the staff at ukraine's nuclear power plants, specifically being able to make decisions and do their jobs without russian influence. talks are underway right now to try to figure out how to keep these sites secure and that may include a future physical visit to some of these nuclear sites in ukraine.
10:25 pm
>> in poland i meisha hasni fox news, i should thank you . let's get a government insider's perspective from here in country now from a head of services development within the ukrainian ministry of digital transformation, slava vannak slava, thank you very much for being here. i think this is one of the first wolves we've ever seen really fought in the cyber space area as well. what is what are you and what is the country of ukraine doing to win that digital war ? yeah, from there own the beginning of the war. we're starting fighting on our front, i think. and first of all, we started to take the volunteers in the cyberspace for attacking the russian government. ceressus government for and of course that websites and for all sorts of different
10:26 pm
infrastructure like bankin, like web cameras and so on . and because of this seven to 1% russians are there supplying the war in ukraine and they won the war. it's happened because they believe to their president and they should and they have to feel what's going on on their personal life. so this war is important to them too. and the second thing that we do is the information campaign we have because a lot of russians are focused on information of ukrainian people. so we are working on making truthful information in ukraine and of course we are launching launched a lot of services that have that useful information for russian audience about sanctions, about closing their businesses and about the that the results that a russian army really has in ukraine because as you know, russian army don't tell anything about their loses
10:27 pm
in their war . they said once at 2020 days ago they once said that the russian luthe almost five hundred soldiers and that's so but the mothers of russian mothers have to know what's going on . it and decirte are not quite slavia. sorry to interrupt you slava, but on that point of the russians knowing exactly what is happening, it's very difficult to do given the clampdown that president putin has brought into place in russia. what what can normal people around the world how do we digitally get through to russians? is there a way we can do that what we're doing in addition, i think and what the people of the world should know that we are working on digital blockade and digital sanctions for russia and after our request, a lot of
10:28 pm
companies, big companies leaving russia and then start supporting their products in russia. so and this is the widespread defeat starting from this ssl certificate, from the website and moving outside from russia . digital i.t. companies like aslak or microsoft and so on . and there are blockade of operation of russian market. yeah. and slava, talk to me a little bit personally. your country has been invaded and unprovoked war . you are seeing your neighbors, your ukrainian brothers and sisters dying not just on the battle front but also as they stand breadline, for instance, as they go about their normal business in kyiv or in mariupol or here in latvia even.
10:29 pm
what what are your personal feelings? talk to me a little bit about what you are going through emotionally. it's awful firstly because as i said before, millions and millions of people should left their homes and me too. and we all try to work hard and to make some situation stable for our families. and this way it's really hard for everyone and that's why in addition to cyber cyber war in ukraine, we have launched some project say in our of you know that we have visa and this is the general government application for citizens documents and commentariat. so we have launched, for example, the financial aid for that ukrainians who will leave or who are left but to work and ukrainians will leave or
10:30 pm
who are left back to work in the regions that are in war and they can get six and a half thousand graveness of my national because they don't have any possibility to work or to earn the salary or to send into bernau and the partnership. so this what we do on the government side to support such a people okay, slavonic you in the ukrainian government from president zelenskyy on down and all of the ukrainian people are really an example to the world of bravery and fortitude in the face of this entirely unprovoked war . we thank you for being here today, slavik. thank you very much indeed. now the latest on the ground from the war in ukraine coming . plus the political fight over your pain at the pump. that's next . on news media. i'm proud to bring you this .

democrats lacked a legislative plan to curb soaring gas prices after russia invaded ukraine. now they're turning their attention to another favorite target. congressional correspondent chad pergram reporting tonight from capitol hill. good evening chat, mike . at first democrat called it the putin premium, but now democrats want to portray big oil as the villain price of crude has actually gone down, but the average price of a gallon is still stuck at nearly four dollars and 30 cents. if anyone thinks this is fair, efficient or sensible, they're probably an oil executive. >> two committees are holding an executive from bp, chevron and exxon mobil next month to explain sky high prices. >> i want to make sure that no one is price gouging. democrats accuse big energy companies of seizing financial advantage during a crisis when the oil price of oil goes up, the price of gasoline and the price of oil goes down. the price of gasoline does not
10:37 pm
necessarily go down. >> but republicans say democrats are just searching for a scapegoat. they don't understand the industry. things don't change overnight. you've got to produce the oil. you sell the oil, you have to refine oil and you pass it through . >> republicans demand the administration authorize more drilling permits, but democrats say energy firms have enough permits already, some of which they don't use. this is not an opportunity for you to just grab more permits when in fact you have thousands of permits to drill in both the gulf and other parts and alaska use those permits first. republicans say democrats only tackle big oil because of progressive concerns about the environment. they are the ones that do not like oil and energy. they are the ones that want to push their climate change agenda. still targeting big oil resonates with the democratic base. we go after corporate america because corporate america is often profiteering. >> the price of gas serves as a
10:38 pm
barometer of voters used to measure the party in power and as democrats head to the midterms, they're saying don't blame us , blame big oil like ted program on the hill. thanks very much. let's talk about the current events making headlines this friday night with civil rights attorney robert pelo and republican candidate for senate in pennsylvania, kathy barnett. welcome back, both of you. thank you . thanks, mike . so robert, how concerned are democrats about potentially high prices at the pump and inflation at places like the grocery store when it comes to november's midterm elections? well, i think most of the worry about the midterm elections democrats want to ensure that we're providing the type of economic support for a regular americans and addressing the kitchen table issues that got democrats. eighty four million votes in the last election. what we understand is that look ,when the price of a barrel of oil goes up, the price of gas goes up. when the price of oil goes down, the price of gas stays the same because this oil
10:39 pm
executives being profiteers and making sure they can squeeze every single dollar out of an emergency, they can't. we saw this after katrina 20 years ago where gas prices shot to 20 to ten dollars a gallon in some locations and then months to go back down because these oil companies tried to take every advantage they can into using the current emergency ukraine to jack up gas prices against regular americans. cathy, what do you make of this blame game shift from vladimir putin to big oil? exactly is exactly that the american people are not stupid. we recognize what has gone on . this is as a direct result of joe biden, democrat green new deal and the failure that they are and their ideology. and instead of fessing up to recognizing that the american people are hurting right now, democrats do what they do. they begin to double down on a really bad idea. and the insidious part about all of this that it can begin to change tomorrow but they won't because in order for democrats to change, they will actually have to admit
10:40 pm
that they've been wrong about virtually everything. absolutely wrong. and the sad part for the american people, there is no ceiling on these gas prices. there is no ceiling on inflation, energy and everything right down to the fertilizer that is used to grow our corn. so we're going to continue to feel this pain. it's going to get really acute and we enter into the general election and i'm hoping people will remember. all right, let's look ahead a bit. next week's big story in addition to ukraine is going to be supreme court confirmation hearings on capitol hill. robert, what are your expectations? well, i'm hoping we have a fair process. what we saw was when judge jetson's justice jackson was up for the d.c. circuit, her nomination sailed through . she has bipartisan support. his impeccable record, her resumé and credentials are above repute. so i'm hoping that we have a fair, fair hearing and that we have bipartisan support for
10:41 pm
her nomination and a very quick process of putting her on to the bench. so we can get to addressing these issues that are before the supreme court that need a full bench in order to determine kathy as someone who's running for the united states senate, i'm curious your thoughts as we look ahead to the confirmation process next week on capitol hill. yes, qualifications trump cosmetic. my hope is that we will that the senators will not allow council culture or social justice to cloud their view and actually examine the individual who is before them. i think one of the one of the strongest qualifications is has you read the constitution? does you have a respect for the constitution? will you uphold the constitution or what you get on the bench and be an activist? very interesting. we will see where it goes. those hearings start monday morning. kathy barnett, robert patillo, thank you so much for your time. have a wonderful weekend. thank you . thanks, mike . a large number of ukrainian nationals and expats have answered president solecki call

in mike because obviously it has not been largely physically touched by the war so far. but you know, the mental wounds are already here. people are going through a curfew every night that ends at 6:00 a.m. which is coming up to two hours ago. and then as i look behind me here, you see every day people coming out heading to work, trying to live life as normal. but obviously in this country life is anything but normal and they were reminded of that very powerfully just over twenty four hours ago, of course, when we heard the air raid sirens right from this position here in the center of live. even then the rumble of explosions across the city as those cruise missiles slammed into the airport area destroying an aircraft repair facility out there. so that was a very stark reminder to everybody here, mike , that even though they might not be getting
10:51 pm
the daily bombardment that so many cities are suffering, they are part of a country that is at war . and i think everybody here is mentally very prepared for what may be to come. mike don't want to jinx things, but it seems pretty quiet so far in ukraine this saturday morning. where do you see things going with this war over the next 48 hours or so? well, there's not much incentive for president putin right now to stop the bombardment of so many cities, mike . so i think it will continue. you're absolutely right. we have not heard of much going on around the country so far this morning. but you have to remember that kyiv is still almost completely surrounded by russian troops. there is an exit to the south of the city, but they are north, east and west of the capital . they are bombarding mariupol constantly over the last week or so. it is not suddenly going to back off there and the hundreds of thousands who are still stuck in that southern city
10:52 pm
will continue to suffer with very little food, very little water and as we understand it, no power. so they will continue the strikes from the air. no doubt about that . they will continue to resupply as best they can the ground forces who have gathered around and that will be significant as to whether they can get weapons and supply to those troops so that they can launch an eventual ground assault on the capitol. but clearly this war has a long way to go. peace talks not really progressing anywhere near quickly enough. mike , the chief correspondent jonathan hunt doing a phenomenal job and leviathan ,thank you so much, jonathan. thanks, mike . as russia's war in ukraine continues, one pastor has decided to remain in kyiv to provide spiritual strength at a time he says the people there need it most. chief religion correspondent lauren greene has that story tonight . good evening, lauren. good evening, mike .

talking with both soldiers and citizens to broadcast to the world, always bringing a message of hope. i just pray with them. i just hug them. i don't know all the answers, but what i know for sure that god is with me is with them and got through me right now. pastor sergei has a message for russian president vladimir putin. vladimir, repent, repent of all of your evil deeds because you're not god and also a message for the american people. i'm very proud of you both your prayers and about your support. so continue to do this . pastor sergei says he does not fear for his life and regardless of what happens, his faith assures him he will see his family again. mike , great story of faith. lauren grant in new york, thanks very much. so that's it. good night from washington.
