11:01 am
apartment buildings, schools and hospitals. ukrainian officials say it is a strategy deserve to break their will. putin is being branded across the globe as a war criminal a murderous man who is committing crimes against humanity, ukraine, says he will not succeed. hello everyone welcome to to "fox news live" i am eric shawn. arthel: hello everyone. his day 24 of this war ukrainian resistance outgunned but bravely managing to hold the russian advance meanwhile zelenskyy once again calling for pollutant to meet with him and a warning failure to do so will cost russia and the long run. >> i want everyone to hear, especially in moscow, the time has come to restore territorial integrity and justice for ukraine. otherwise russia's cost will be so high you will not be able to
11:02 am
rise again for several generations. arthel: but putin seems to be no mood to talk yesterday he appeared -- there is that he appeared at a massive rally in moscow where he praised the russian military we have reporters across the region from the war zone to countries facing europe's fastest-growing refugee crisis since world war ii were going to start with mike tobin he is life in a refugee crossroads of lviv and western ukraine. >> new satellite shows before and after pictures of that theater in mariupol that was used as a bomb shelter. the next regional drama theater and had more than 1000 people staying in it. the word children or kid was spelled out in a russi and big white letters sprayed the image after the strike clearly shows the center of the theater is destroyed. a day after the strike was a commissioner for human rights
11:03 am
said that 130 people have been freed from the basement of this drama theater. then later we heard a local politician as well, he said the rescuers were driven away by the fighting they could not get back to the area of the theme or theater. yesterday and today we have no additional information about survivors or people who may be trapped inside the rubble of that theater. russian forces have now been spotted deeper into the city of mariupol. the key city if it falls it gives russians control of the coast and the sea and it gives them control of the land coming up from crimea. civilians in mariupol made a parable terrible price for that. humanitarian corridors have been set up on a number of occasions but they keep falling apart under russian fire. today he made certain quarters were set up from mariupol although up to the capitol city of kyiv. what we are hearing from people who may be escaped is that the
11:04 am
humanitarian core doors, they existed. the convoys went on the road but the cease-fire did not hold in place. but the people are so desperate to get out particularly from mariupol they made the trip anyway. arthel: and mike, what are you hearing about russian supply line? >> you know, we just got some new information. this is coming from alexander who is the chairman of ukrainian railways. he says the russians will no longer be able to resupply from belarus because that railway has been cut off. and then he really did not offer any more details as to how it was cut off. but the resupply of course from belarus is going to be a key element coming down to the capitol city of kyiv. >> yes those russian forces continued moving west they are increasing the airstrikes getting close to lviv now what
11:05 am
are you hearing on the ground? >> what you see from the airstrikes here in the west as they are primarily military targets that airstrips, they've hit a place that would retrofit and for the ukrainians could use them, multi national base very near the polish border, they've hit those kind of things exception would be the television tower they had that seems to have more of a civilian application. you do not see the tremendous damage you see in the east as far as ground forces being able to come this way, the regional administrator who most any conversation with the other day thanks the russian forces are just too occupied it what they are doing to the east of here to start doing in this direction anytime soon, arthel. arthel: occupied perhaps to un- organize? >> quite possibly. they certainly have their hands full. afterward they have tried to make a big offensive again they seem to get bogged down part still have not been able to encircle the capitol city.
11:06 am
they may be making some ground in mariupol right now but they cannot get into kharkiv. everywhere they go there seeing a much bigger fight than they intended. arthel: mike tobin live from lviv thank you stay safe. eric: nearly four years of this war 3 million people now fled ukraine for neighboring countries. most of them and seeking refuge from poland fox news had the opportunity to speak to the wife of the ukrainian nuclear plant worker she is sheltering in poland while her husband she says is continuing to work and hostage like conditions in ukraine at the nuclear reactor. as in southeast poland with more on this remarkable story. >> yes, hey there eric. it is incredible really her name is katerina we found her in hiding in a shelter in poland and she tells me she is not held
11:07 am
her husband, seen him physically at about three weeks because he chose to stay behind to protect not only ukraine but the rest of europe. now her husband, whose name i will not be disclosing because we are trying to keep them protected, he supervises the department in charge of cooling the nuclear reactors at the power plant in southeast ukraine. the biggest power plant in the entire country. now katerina fled with her children just days before the russians attacked this land she was watching along with the rest of the world as the russians fired rockets at the compound while her husband, eric was still inside. >> it was the most terrible night of my life. it would be a huge tragedy for europe and not just for our city. if something happens or even poland would not be able to save its people. >> katerina says that russian soldiers are walking around the plants right now with guns. but she says her husband is safe
11:08 am
it. she tries to talk to him as often as she can. the international atomic energy agency though is gravely concerned about ukrainian staff being unable to make decisions without russian influence, russian pressure and talks are underway right now to try to figure out a way to make sure these nuclear sites remain protected and safe throughout this conflict, this war. eric. eric: without giving away any sensitive information she may have did she indicate her set husband sense of safety with the plants and if the ukrainian staff can keep it operating safely? >> yes, i did ask her point blankly if her husband is safe. if he has been physically harmed her she tells me he has not been harmed by the russian troops there. she says the majority of staff there chose to stay because they felt that they did not stay than
11:09 am
the russians would bring in their own scientists, their own engineers and they just did not feel comfortable leaving that power plant in those hands. they wanted to make sure it was properly secure. that it would not lead to a nuclear disaster. so instead of fleeing with their families they have told their families to run and they stay. they stayed behind it they are truly the heroes and the star because now their family has been separated. she is sitting in poland watching the war go on. hurt their children miss their father dearly and yet they have no idea when they will be able to see him again. because as long as this war is continuing they can't go back home. and their father can't leave either. eric: that's just astounding. finally, what is the sense you received from her about what could happen here? she has her husband operating a nuclear power plants. is able to talk with him which is a terrific thing. what is her sense of the future?
11:10 am
>> well, she is very optimistic as ukrainians are. we have seen over and over again every time we interview a ukrainian refugee they are very hopeful they'll be able to go more home and they do feel they will be able to defeat the russians. as long as this continues, obviously the russians not taken the capitol yet really not taken any city yet except the two nuclear power plants. they do feel a sense of resolve that they can perhaps defeat russia and be able to go back home one day. when that might happen they do not know it's a very, very difficult she was sobbing to the entire interview it was very difficult and talking with our got to meet one of her sons as well who asks her constantly, mount mom when can we go home? when can i see dad again? why are we home right now? why am i living in the shelter? why am i going to this to school?
11:11 am
it's a very, very tough situation for these families they don't have answers for these children. they don't have an answer as to when they are able to go back home and then on top of that, eric, what their home might even look like. in some of the cities there's nothing left it starting to look like a wasteland. it's a really, really difficult situation for the families and you think about katerina and what her husband and the rest of those employees that are stuck there in the nuclear power plant, what they are doing, what are the they are sacrificing that's a story we all need to pay attention too. this is a heartbreaking horror caused by vladimir putin. i sure thank you. arthel. arthel: are aisha and eric think you were going to bring in jamil he is the founder executive director of the national security institute and former associate white house counsel to george w bush so listen, the
11:12 am
longer ukrainian forces hold back russian forces, the more frustrated putin becomes which leads to more indiscriminate or reckless use of firepower. committing war crimes, more war crimes and displacing people like you just saw an aisha's report katerina there and her family. is it time for the u.s. and nato to change their strategy? >> you know arthel i really think it is. general alexander the former army four-star and i wrote an op-ed this past week it's at now time to impose a no-fly zone over ukraine in order to help protect civilians, in order to bring the fight to a close more rapidly? right now vladimir boudin has no incentive to negotiate he can run the clock out keep pounding the ukrainian people keep hitting civilian target schools, hospitals over 3 million displaced as eric pointed out. it is aisha pointed out 1.5 million children based on units of count for this is a real humanitarian tragedy. it's also a huge strategic loss
11:13 am
because we are seeing a huge fight in the middle of europe and we are allowing a brutal dictator to come across the border, invade another sovereign country and face no consequences whatsoever other than what the brady critics have done to him. if i've he's acting like a terrorist so what should the u.s. and nato do? how should they change their strategy? >> one, arthel, with got to provide a lot more weapons to the conflict. that's the right thing to do but cannot happen fast enough. we need to bring conflict resolution soon are the only way to do that is for the u.s. to get involved but we do not into actually attack russian aircraft if we impose a no-fly zone we simply need to tell them you stop flying if you'd like to step on your radar you attack us will fire back if you don't fight will stay in place in ensure a safe withdrawal from russia out of ukraine. arthel: that the negotiation you are supporting the pollutant? >> look at some point we have got to get militarily involved.
11:14 am
putin has to know there is something behind our words we keep talking about what a catastrophe this is what disaster it is there's nothing behind that and is not afraid of it. the reality is economic sanctions have not worked. the situation is getting worse not better for the ukrainian people. it's time during the confit to a close. arthel: the economic sanctions are working but time is of the essence. listen, putin tell this rally promoting propaganda, claiming his war on ukraine as a defensive measure. a special military operation. and then he mentions the fifth column which as you know referred to that sympathize with the enemy. how does this reflect on putin state of mind? he realized that home heats under pressure ruining a lot of lives without purge of intel services as a number of key
11:15 am
leaders inside the service he's got pressure at home but what is that made for him abroad? what is it made from ukraine? he can lash out to sure wins on the battlefield that is why it's so important to get involved now. he does not believe the u.s. and allies are serious. he sees economic sanctions he's not worried about it. not nearly as fast as you correctly pointed out. >> solis it would putin start and pick up nuclear threats, should they be ignored or could he get that desperate or determined? >> look there's always a possibility, arthel, gets that desperate for the fact of the matter is other than the united states in the end of world war ii buried the reason why is nuclear states don't want to go to war with one another because they're afraid of the retaliation. but her food knows it uses
11:16 am
chemical weapons, biological weapons or nuclear weapons is crossing a major line but as a result of a likely scenario is if we are able to go and protect will bring a quicker resolution not to a nuclear war. here's a thank vladimir putin is not looking for war with the united states. neither are we. he is long to resolve this if we make clear the military surge of backup the ukrainians. >> are right, jamil jaffer thank you as always we'll see you again next time. take care. >> from russia to china president biden spent about two hours on the phone warning china's president there will be consequences as beijing shows consequences for the result. beijing and moscow, the consequences of that and what it means for us, next with gordon chang.
