first, foreign affairs correspondent with the view, ukraine. >> as you noted, we are well into week four and in the past 24, 48 hours, they are taking debbie and serious turned. first, russian strikes on the ukrainian army barracks, reports are yes, thousands of ukrainian soldiers were killed, ukrainians had been holding off, in fact push artillery out of range, that's why it suspected the missile strike was a long range even from russian territory maybe. mariupol as we speak, there's three combat, fighting, the fight has been under siege for weeks, ukrainians fighting very hard there but they even admitted saturday this city will

probably fall and be a key strategic for the russians. today confirming another target it not far from where we are now. a weapons ammunition missile depot, another sign the russians are striking anywhere they want in this country, even in the western part of the country. we are only about 40 miles from the polish border, poland and nato and u.s. ally. finally, ukrainian resident zelenskyy on again, mike message stating he wants comprehensive peace talks and soldiers have been doing well and experts say they've destroyed 1500 russian tanks, vehicles and arms and have killed or injured or captured 10% of the invading russian force, russian forces have been 200,000 which is a problem because 90% of the

russians invading force stays here and now people are talking about seizure, russians digging in and forgetting about successes they planned and where the country down, that could be the most dangerous turn the work you take. jon: and it brings to mind when installing tried to start out ukrainians factoring in the early part of the 20th century. >> it brings back a lot of history, we have the analysts talking about world war i and warfare, they are coming up with these and what would happen in this situation is yes, ukrainians are really fighting well and they will keep getting weaponry from the west and they will kill and capture and enter more russian soldiers but in addition to ukrainian soldiers, russians will go for civilians

and that is what is concerned, the big wildcard as we been reporting day after day is vladimir putin and where he wants to take this. jon: right because if he grinds this forward, you don't see him going tanks and forces back and say oops, i tried, i just didn't get it. he's going to want something out of all of this money and effort. >> exactly right. what is he going to do, say okay, will pull our troops out now? that's exactly what president zelenskyy is asking for you cannot see him saying that and that's why analysts are weighing in on this idea that he's going to hunker down. as noted earlier, it is the russian playbook they used in chechnya and syria, they have slammed the towns and cities they've been trying to conquer

and wait to come back. i mentioned the report earlier and i'll mention it again, one russian official thank let's wait until may and they'll say uncle. may is two months from now. imagine the casualties. jon: thank you. new numbers from the un show six and a half million people displaced in ukraine and 3.3 million refugees left the country. many escaped to poland where volunteers work tirelessly to meet high demand. a member of ukrainian parliament joins us but first, aishah hasnie has the latest on the crisis from eastern poland. >> good evening to you, there is anxiety in the air across the poland ukrainian border as russian strikes closer and

closer to the polish border. they are getting more and more nervous they could be the next refugees. to date a bipartisan delegation of ten senators is a polish refugee center near the border and they saw firsthand the severity of the refugee crisis and they are now aware of the challenges in getting humanitarian aid to the ukrainians still in eastern ukraine. they believe the fastest way to end the humanitarian crisis is to end the war and the way to end the war is bark ukraine with the weapons they want. president biden is headed to a nato summit in brussels this week and i asked the sanders today what they expect to hear from the president. >> i believe in peace through strength, we hope they believe in peace and strength, this is not a time to be week so we need to show results.

all nations need to show resolve. >> there's also increased concern tonight the longer the war drags on, putin may lean more on nuclear threats and i asked shelley kat whether or not americans back home should be concerned about nuclear warfare. >> absolutely we should be concerned about nuclear warfare. willing to stand up for terrorists, a war criminal it's frightening and any sense of the word. >> at the beginning of the crisis as you have predicted we could see up to 4 million refugees flee ukraine three weeks and, we are getting that number very quickly, already more than 3 million.

jon: aishah hasnie lift from poland, thank you. alina jenkins joins me, ukraine's parliament, thank you very much for being with us this evening. your president, volodymyr zelenskyy told president putin of russia heat meet face-to-face peace negotiations, is that possible and what will be ukraine's terms? what could possibly, what could you country agree to that would end the war? >> hello, of course. ukraine participates in negotiations since pretty much the very beginning of this horrible war of aggression against ukraine and now we see the ukrainian side is more interested in relinquishing negotiation.

russia, it's not acceptable, they want not to have army anymore and things like giveaway part of our region which is not acceptable because it's about people leaving their homes so there's no way we let putin take away our region but people but there are three rounds of negotiations, russia is not getting major military success, therapy by ukrainian army defense and sometimes civilians catching russian soldiers without weapons in their camp so we see russia changing during

negotiations. however, we see russians are people not following negotiations. we can go about humanitarian corridors created from settlement but we see russian soldiers, it's striking at telling the humanitarian corridors and innocent civilians killed while trying to escape. this is not acceptable, not the negotiations we want to have but when you deal with people that have nothing sacred and

negotiations, as the situation you have because of aggression. jon: vladimir putin's game plan now, i don't know what it was in the beginning, he apparently thought he would take ukraine quickly but now it seems to be too just bombard and show your cities, reduce everything to rebel and help your people finally throw up their hands and give up. will that happen? >> yeah. well unfortunately, he is not only showing and buildings and stuff but they are committing massive execution. what they are doing in mariupol and other cities is not acceptable. they hit a maternity house, theater and even churches. anyplace where they are trying to find shelter so this is about horrible losses.

in mariupol, according to the mayor, the number of victims has risen to 20000. we have dozens of cities under russia's attacks but the ukrainians will never surrender. i look at their recent public opinion poll a week ago and according to this group, 92% of ukrainians believe ukraine will rebel russia tax, 32%. 80% of the population are somehow involved in helping ukraine, someone became a volunteer or someone is trying to either, people are providing help, summer is providing

shelter to refugees, listen to this number. 80% of the population of the country doing something to help ukraine. this is a country of unity, but we are fighting for our land in cities and homes so we have nothing to do, we are desperate, we have only one way out, the way to win and we hope western societies and politicians will help and show occupant where is that place. jon: the world admires what you've done so far. in 30 seconds, what do you most need? >> we definitely need more

affect, we've heard one or two gunfire but i think it's and edginess here, nervousness, a lot of talk of russians who might be coming to pave the way for more russian in this area. we've been talking a lot about the military in the last hour and a half, i'd like to spend a minute to mention ukrainian people because from the top to the bottom, this is what is keeping the country together and the fighting force in the same league as this huge russian military. we have the well-trained military, forces of ukraine and a second line of defense called the territorial defense, they are getting out pretty well and let's call it the equipment of american u.s. national guard and below that, everybody else eking in, if vladimir putin wanted to

divide this country or strip the country of its identity, he's done exactly opposite, the country is more united than it's ever been against russia and it's ever been. jon: putin apparently thought in my have been told that ukrainians would welcome russians, they would be easy to get. that's proved not to be the case. >> that's proved totally not the case. either really bad intelligence or wishful thinking on part of the claimant. they've not received that anywhere. talking about the ukrainian people, town after town were russians are occupied, small towns, people are coming outstanding and protesting, yelling at soldiers and russian soldiers saying why are you here? it up, go away, this is ukraine, not russia. you are seeing a spirit of

patriotism this country has not seen in a very long time. jon: i suppose if the simple question, maybe not one you can answer but as you stand there today, who is winning x. >> that is a very good question, very important. you could say ukraine is winning because they done more in the last three and a half weeks and anybody thought they could do. the analysts and again, we've been talking about this shift in the last 24, 48 hours in the war, analysts say plan a failed, russia basically failed its plan to take over cities quickly topple the government quickly and now they are shifting the plan and that is the problem. even if ukrainian forces continue to do well in the fight against russia, they would like to some extent, russians would

like to some extent caught in the middle of any extended war here in ukraine will be the civilians and that's the worry situation we have this saturday night and sunday morning in lviv. jon: greg, thank you. thousands of ukrainian families are looking for refuge in countries like hungary. russia increases military pressure on major ukrainian population centers. alex hogan has an inside look at the refugee crisis near the hungarian order. >> families like this continue to flee to ukraine here and hungary as they arrive, they are greeted by volunteers handing them out, water, food, any think they could need. some of the people tell me safe and traveling for days on end. i met a woman who drove seven days driving 12 hours everyday not because of the length and

time and distance, just because of the traffic. it took them that many days to get here to hungary. families sitting out here waiting for the next train to take them further into the country, most people will go but some don't have anywhere else to go from here so they will sleep in local schools. the children have been forced to go home and will learn virtually and teachers and refugees have arrived. more than 283,000 refugees have come to hungary from ukraine. most of the refugees fleeing the country are going to poland, a large presence in romania, slovakia and of course here. while people continue to arrive, volunteers arrive in droves, when they have nothing to eat, and medical help people need to

receive. people will continue in volunteers say they will continue to be here as long as needed. jon: thank you. more on ukraine driving a cycle of fear on children. joining me now how to protect children's mental health, doctor marc siegel, professor of medicine at nyu langone medical center. war is appalling and any form but this russian -- debility brutal and unnecessary, we've seen them go after medical facilities, blowing apart a maternity hospital mothers and little babies. >> there's 43 medical facilities destroyed the russian army, 160 schools destroyed and kids who

have become refugees, the first problem for kids is structure. they still put their caretaker, their parents? is there destroyed or closed? are they trying to get schooling in another country? in terms of medical supplies, that is particularly troubling. the world health organization is think have enough supplies in the ground for 4500, victims, not nearly enough and for 50000 primary care patients. we are talking about cancer patients, heart disease patients, need for oxygen and antibiotics and clean water who says we have it in lviv and warehouses but can't get into mariupol or the places under siege. this is a huge and growing problem with hospitals destroyed and supplies limited. jon: vladimir putin seems content to just take out the war of aggression against the civilian population and hope eventually president zelenskyy gives up.

>> you heard the spirit is there, the most important thing. it's awful for fear. if vladimir putin doesn't succeed and get fear in the hearts of ukrainians and people around the world rally on behalf of ukraine, that is a b+ on the side of ukraine, he's not getting what he wants and that's encouraging. he mentioned at the beginning you will around the world, that's what we have to relate to. we have to relate to the courage zelenskyy and countrymen of ukraine are showing and it will drive out our own fear and lead us to want to help, compassion, people coming over and giving funding and supplies medical centers around the u.s., world health organization, red cross and fox news with us, red cross giving $8 million for supplies from a hugely important that we have to figure out a way to get them into the hands of patients who need them the most.

another thing hospitals to handle combat victims and i'm involved in reporting about, very important because it's not just getting to hospital or dr. that matters, it's getting to somebody who knows how to take care of them and an enormous amount of posttraumatic stress involved as well. jon: will affect the little children who have seen the horrors of war and uprooted their lifestyle. >> even if they go to another country, alex hogan reported, even if they go to poland or hungary or slovakia, wherever they go, they take the nightmare images of what they saw in combat whether they are soldiers or got out or lost a caretaker from the nightmares will often the mortality rate high in the first year after children leave the country. the good news, children are resilient and can respond to

treatment and caretakers hugging them and encouraging them and love, that will help but make no mistake, this is extremely hard on children and undermines the cruelty of vladimir putin even if they escape. fifteen -- 1.5 million children have left ukraine and there will be a lot more. jon: doctor marc siegel, thank you. related to what doctor siegel was talking about, a children's hospital and ukraine capitol on the front lines of putin's work on ukraine. we'll take you there next. ♪♪

vladimir putin's attack on ukraine now in its fourth week and no signs of letting up. chilling video and pictures from the war zone show us some of the horrors of the invasion. nate foy has a closer look from the latest images from ukraine. >> in the past hour we are getting new images showing just how horrible the war is. for everybody but especially children, we were just talking about the kids who have less in the country but still some are in kyiv and russian forces in the north and northeast, we have video of this children's hospital sort of acting as a hybrid shelter in hospital for these kids who couldn't leave, some of the kids even came into the hospital during the war. there's one heartbreaking story of a 13-year-old boy admitted into this hospital two days into the russian invasion because he was in a car with his father and 6-year-old brother in both shot and killed while trying to leave

the country. a horrible situation, the hospital chief called a humanitarian visit. here is the hospital chief explaining what they are dealing with. >> constant bombardment and the children are forced to stay in the shelter. bomb shelters do not qualify for treatment of cancer patients, terminal patients. >> are doing their best to take care of the kids. for the first time we are hearing from one of the nurses at this makeshift nursery we showed you in the past hour. twenty newborns are wary waiting for their surrogate parents to pick them up but whether they are unwilling or unable, the parent are not able to pick up the babies because of the war. these nurses have been here many of them the war started. one of the nurses, listen to
