live our lives and not let covid define our lives because we do have in fact better tools that are proven to save our lives and keep us on the hospital per that's really the goal over the last two years covid defined our lives and restricted us in profound ways. but because have better tools have the power to move forward now and it managed virus and do so thoughtfully because we have been able to get her kids back to school over the last year. where the 95% of kids are back in school at the big when i'm indebted to small kids to thankfully are back in school we've got people back to work, people are seeing family and friends again we need to keep doing these things we now have the tools to do so safely break. >> what's amazing to me is right before i left home i was thinking cvs is saying we will give you free covid medication come and ask what will give you free covid medication my question is, everybody's got to be thinking why would i get boosted why am i going to get the vaccine when they are going to give me free covid medication if i do get it. >> i am so glad you raised that because that is something over the years i've talked to

patients about for a variety of illnesses if you can prevent an illness it's always better than getting the illness and treating it later. we know while treatments were work very, very well there are consequences of getting sick some people may have long covid tender brothers may have other complications it may lead to infecting other people who maybe were vulnerable. so yes we have treatments but we don't want people to say oh gosh because of treatment i don't get vaccinated. prevention always better than a cure. that's what's allowing us to move forward into the new phase big cracks when it right from the checkout, ba.2 rba.two? i don't quite know yet i hear a lot of different versions of it what you think question records internally were saying bhu so feel free to use that for. >> ba.2 is coming along as many americans are adjusting to cdc guidance which includes with certain masking restrictions. what do you think the delete jumped the gun and is the cdc talk about potential updates as it bhu potentially spreads?

>> still questioning and public health responses like this you got to make judgment calls and think the cdc took a very thoughtful approaches and cases are starting to come down. went to also focus on hospitalization and death is the most important thing we prevent. so how do we adjust and put a system for that allows americans will make him pull back on certain measures like masking. i think the recommendation they made were quite appropriate. you'll notice also they are responsive which means if the situation changes, if cases increase dramatically or in particular if the hospitalizations increase our hospital capacity also gets reduced because of covid those are circumstances where they have recommended shifts. if you are in the green zone which more than 90% of americans live in an area right now which has a low number of cases of hospitalizations you can go about your life much as before. if you move into the next area of a risk that some people who are at higher risk should take more precautions like wearing masks or people who live around

the should take more precautions when you're in the highest category you want everyone wearing masks and indoor spaces to reduce frederick arcs i hear what you're saying or people needing to be flexible anything is constantly changing on the ground. but as the virus evolves, is the administration worried about the fact that people are just worn out? >> listen this is a very important point you are raising great luck i understand just how tired and exhausted people are the end of two years. this virus is turned our life upside down and ways that many of us never imagined its impact that our kids that has impacted so many of us including myself have lost loved ones because of this virus. people are understandably exhausted. the president certainly understands that something that has come up in our conversations. he was to make sure we are understanding but we are also responding in a way that's guided by public health by science because the bottom line is i think it's going to help people the most is to make sure there is a clear end to this pandemic we can manage it well

they can get on with their lives trade that is the key. the good news is because of their sacrifices people around this country because the great work of scientists and others speak up these tools. we can save lives who saved over lives over the last year. and we will support for. >> very quickly have a lot there's a lot of pushback a lot of people saying this stuff is political and it comes and goes as the politics come and go. when have the cdc director coming out send look we said a faulty science we do and say the science was going to be exact well, we sure thought that two years ago when he said faulty science, everybody wanted to follow the signs in our being told well it was an exact but yet if there were dissenting views on the science you were called out you were called names from a lot of media outlets. >> what we have to do and this is understand number one science evolves. we learn new data that should inform our response that is truth illnesses across the board but what is also really important is that we have the

ability to have respectful thoughtful dialogue with one another paired i worry about the temperature rising in our dialogue about people being shut out in terms of the points of view being heard. but each bill to hear our voices we need to build to when he to recognize it we may have to shift our paths from time to time based on new data it does not mean people were wrong before. it just means that the learn before we go for. >> as everyone is taught we talk about this is now the new covid czar for the administration. it's an excellent communicator as you have said they're somewhat worried that because of the confusing guidance, communication is great but there are other things we need to prioritize overt communication skills. what is your final thought on that? >> we have to continue to work on multiple fronts to get the country to the pandemic we have to communicate well, we have to make sure we are thinking ahead
