lviv come ukraine, as president zelenskyy lays on new conditions for a cease-fire. jonathan? >> carley and todd, good morning to you again. we are getting worried right now that the eastern city of kharkiv is coming under some of the most intense bombardment it has seen in this months-old war. 84 artillery rounds from russian tanks have landed in kharkiv over just the last 24 hours, according to officials they are. the great fear, of course, is that bombardment will increase in the way the bombardment of the seven city of mariupol did, where almost every street in every building is reduced to rubble now after the intense fighting that city has seen. we understand that tens of thousands of civilians are still stuck in the mariupol unable to get out because it is simply too dangerous, as the russian missiles and tank shells continue to fall.

intact, the ukrainian defense minister says that it is the clearest example yet of russian war crimes. listen here. >> russia is now committing a real act of genocide against the ukrainian city of mariupol. for three weeks, 400,000 citizens have been surrounded without food, water, light. >> emergency services and indeed residents of kyiv have been taking a closer look at the damage caused by the attack on that shopping mall in the capital city yesterday. russians say that was being used for weapons storage. ukrainian officials have said that simply was not the case. either way, at least eight people died in that attack. he had another example the pure

bravery of ordinary ukrainians. this is in the city of kherson, the one and only city so far that russian forces have claimed to have control over. you can see here, this is what control amounts to. civilians just walking straight up to those russian troops screaming at them and to get out of their city and go home. the russian soldiers opened fire, as you can hear and see. we understand that at least one person was injured. todd and carley, that really is a quite extraordinary example of the courage, the resilience, and the fortitude we are seeing all over this country from ukrainians who say, whatever happens, they will ultimately win this war. >> carley: it's unbelievable. you are seeing civilians standing up to russian military and telling them, "we don't want you in our city." you mentioned kharkiv at the top, i read about a 96-year-old holocaust survivor was killed in that city.

one of the notable lives lost in this war. jonathan, it was also reading yesterday that a senior official says there is increased naval activity in the northern black sea. more than a dozen warships are there. our attention has been on kyiv, mariupol, and kharkiv, but what does that increased activity say to you about russia's next move? >> as you look at the map come over to the bottom left-hand side you will see odessa, known as the jewel of the black sea. it's the biggest black sea port and very important strategically. at the moment that has been no overall assault on it by russian forces but what they are trying to do is come across from theyare, trying to take that ciy and move towards odessa. and you mentioned the warships in the black sea, they are poised if they feel the time is

right to launch an amphibious assault. so they would come at odessa from both sides come if you like, from land and sea. that would be important, because if they get odessa, the russians really would control all of that black sea supply line that ukraine depends on so much. so the critical port. they clearly do not believe they are in a position to launch an assault as yet because they haven't done so. we have been expecting it since the start of this war, carley. if and when it comes, that's going to be a real a real battle. >> todd: a lot of military experts are questioning the success of a potential amphibious but dominic assault. on the air is a different story. president biden confirming that russia sent a hypersonic missile. >> carley: u.s.-russian relations hit a new low in the kremlin's warning that branding vladimir putin as a war criminal could be the breaking point.

alexandra, good morning. >> president biden use the term "war criminal" to describe put in for the first time since the invasion last week. the russian foreign minister responded saying that u.s. ambassador john sullivan was given a formal note of protest over the term. they described a note saying that it's emphasized that such statement by the american president unworthy of a statesman of such high rank and russian-american relations are on the verge of breaking. they warn that hostile actions would receive a decisive infirmary bus. during a business roundtable meeting yesterday president biden confirmed that russia used a hypersonic missile in ukraine over the weekend. listen. >> they launched a hypersonic missile because it's the only thing that they can get through with absolute certainty. and now putin is backed against the wall. >> the president added that hypersonic missiles are no more destructive than other missile

launches except they are impossible to stop. this shows desperation on the part of russia. >> what putin is trying to do is desperately show the west that he has these hypersonic missiles and is willing to use them. as was just noted, they are not particularly useful. they are unnecessary for the target they were hitting, but they are trying to send a message. >> speaking with american ceos yesterday, president biden urged american companies to mediate the strength in their defenses against a cyber attack. this has been the advice from the administration for weeks, but with new intelligence, the president is saying a cyber attack appears imminent. carley, todd? >> carley: thank you so much. developing right now, signaling support for tehran's nuclear negotiations in exchange for sanctions relief. it comes as world powers are near a turning point in efforts to revive the obama-era nuclear deal. diplomats say the final hurdle is whether to remove the u.s.

constituents. i represent a large amount of constituents who come from the former soviet union and its devastating for all of us see what's happening. so we talked a lot about that. >> todd: of course this is your homeland. this has to be particularly tough for you to watch what's happening. if you are president and not joe biden, would you have done differently that joe biden did not do? >> first of all i would make sure that we are energy independent, and president trump has talked about that for a long time, talking about china. i would have made sure to sanction russia way before and make sure that we had a tough foreign policy. i think the soft diplomacy implemented by joe biden is a danger is not just for america but for the world. >> todd: you made the switch. you are a democrat and now you're a republican. when you look at what was happening in new york city and compared it to what you originally came from, soviet ukraine, the comparisons we read in your notes were just too

strong for you to ignore. is that why you made the change? >> truthfully i was never really a democrat in my views. i was always republican. i was a democrat because, as you know, in new york, they say you have to be a democrat to be able to vote in the primaries and choose the right democratic candidate who is worse than the others. you should be democrat. so i was a registered democrat on paper but i was always a republican since i became interested in politics. steel and a somebody who fled the soviet union. when you watch what putin is doing, how worried are you that he's trying to bring the soviet union back? >> extremely worried. that's exactly what he's trying to do. i grew up in the region so i know about putin and what he's like. i know he's a tyrant and i actually was not surprised to see that he in fact did invade at the end. >> todd: how worried are you that a lot of those social communist ideals are making their way into america, a country you came to trying to

flee those very ideals? >> extremely worried. that's exactly why i entered politics, because i see them turning towards socialism and communism. that's what i came from. we escaped communism. my family escaped communism. we lived in that. we came to america for freedom of religion, for opportunity, for economic opportunity, and for capitalism and the free market economy. she was going on here is extreme he devastating. >> todd: i know most of your friends and family here in the states but obviously have some connections still back in ukraine. we are praying with it for them as we are the entire country. we appreciate your time this morning. carley come over to you. >> carley: from russia and china devoting right here at home. jen psaki has one answer for everything. watch. >> china has to make a decision how they want the history books to look at them. it's a question of where you want to be as the history books are written. think about where you want to stand when the history books are

podcast that she was been binge watching "the west wing." consisting of the very best people on the planet, they solve complex problems through soaring rhetoric while taking on "evil republicans." in the end she talks about how china wants to be seen in the history books. china is a communist dictatorship. they don't care very much about how they will be seen 50 or 100 years from now in history books because they write their own history books. jen psaki didn't have a good answer here besides the boilerplate stuff because president biden isn't pressing china specifically on russia. because china sees the ukrainian invasion, that insidious invasion, as an opportunity perhaps. if they help rationale maybe they will own russia in terms of everything they do economically and militarily. the bottom line is the press secretary jen psaki need to do a better job than just resorting to "this is how they want to be seen in the history books." i don't think so. it won't have any real teeth as

ohio lieutenant governor joins me now. lieutenant governor, good morning to you. it doesn't seem like a good time to be shutting down pipelines but that's exactly what the michigan governor wants to do. if line 5 shuts down what happens to people in the midwest? >> well, it supplies the crude oil that refineries across ohio, southern michigan come even into pennsylvania and ontario used to re-sign fuel that powers automobiles every day. if you shut it down, you're going to drive up prices of gasoline dramatically. you're going to empower authoritarians like vladimir putin and our enemies around the globe. we should rely on a domestic production of oil, allied in this case with a country like canada who is an ally that fuels our economy. if we just arbitrarily shut down these pipelines, which is an agenda that the state of michigan has right now, it's

going to hurt our economy, it's going to hurt working people, drive up the price of gasoline even more. >> carley: it runs from canada through the great lakes and through michigan into ohio. and the toledo refinery, i went there couple months ago. if it shuts down, hundreds if not thousands of jobs, and your state will be lost. governor whitmer says that line 5 poses the risk of a catastrophic oil spill in the great lakes. is there any merit to that concern? >> it's been operating safely for years, and if you accept argument, there is an alternative plan to tunnel under the streets where the pipeline currently is, remove any risk that it would leak into the great lakes, but michigan will not accept that alternative. they will not approve the permits to do so. they seem intent on shutting down line 5 which will create economic catastrophe. right now the whole world is struggling with high oil prices

and the impact on that because of what russia and ukraine have done, or what russia has done to ukraine. but every time we don't approve drilling permits, every time we shut down pipelines, we empower people like vladimir putin. why this country is not doing a better job of embracing the need for energy independence is contrary to our foreign policy interests and domestic economic interests. >> carley: president biden has blamed everybody from the gas companies themselves to vladimir putin on high prices, and now ten oil and gas trade groups have written president biden a letter saying they want to work with him to ease prices but they also say that there is a key challenge standing in the way of unity. the words and actions of u.n. members of your administration. the letter goes on to say, perhaps the work characterization of all that you and your administration is when you said that you are doing

nothing to hold back energy production. that is just not true. so these companies say that they do want to work with the biden administration to help ease prices at the pump. how does the president respond? >> they need to open up drilling by providing permits. i'm trying to expose the issue of pipelines. you can drill for it but he shut down the pipelines, you are still not solving the problem. pipelines run in the bottom of lakes and rivers all across this country. if a single state can come in and shut them down, they can dramatically impact the price, the access to it, and the american economy. if you want to take on the authoritarians of the world you have to have alliances with friendly countries and domestic production. if they fail to do this, they

different people here in the area. those numbers pretty much staggering at this point. more than 3 million people have fled from ukraine and on monday alone 8,000 people were able to escape from ukraine, specifically thousands from mariupol, as that continues to get shelled by the day. the mayor of warsaw estimated this morning that 100,000 children from ukraine have come to his city. he's trying to figure out a way to ensure that their schools are ready to handle that massive influx of students who could be enrolling in schools in warsaw. across poland long lines like this wraparound train stations and bus stops. we have seen it on the ground for days. people trying to get out why the the shelling in a text continued by russian troops. people are heading back into ukraine saying they don't have the supplies and they don't feel comfortable without their loved ones who were left behind in ukraine so they are getting on trains and heading back into lviv and kyiv wanting to check on their families and the lives they left behind. some people staying a graffiti center stocked with food,

supplies, clothing. you name it, they have it. many came back with just the clothes they had, and this comes as russian troops are still targeting innocent civilians and there is no end to that fighting insight. >> lots of people from ukraine need to go to, the friend in other countries >> as ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy is talking to vladimir putin, he is seeking not nato membership. that transition has been slammed her days. people are coming to that area below to try and get their hands on supplies, not sure when or if they will make it back home as the fighting continues. president biden will be here in poland after he meets with nato members in brussels in the coming days. we are lives in krakow. alexis mcadams.
