in moscow about putin's leadership team. what is happening on the ground in russia to civilians. thanks for inviting us into your home. the "special report," fair and balanced and still unafraid. jesse watters prime-time with a couple of seconds extra. >> jesse: i am not giving them back. thanks, bret. vladimir putin must have flunked history class. if he paid attention instead of daydreaming about whatever russian boys dream about. he would have learned about guerilla warfare. ukrainians will die before they lose everything they own. how can he overcome that
4:01 pm
resistance? the ukrainians know the cities they are protecting and recognizes which streets can be used as pinch points. they understand the terrain. they know the swamps and the tree lines forcing the invaders into compromised position. sounds similar to something we might know a thing or two about in the united states. like when the colonial army fought off the british in the revolutionary war. england was unable to defeat a bunch of farmers. america used guerilla warfare. the colonial militia men limited casualties and for their freedom

and land against an occupying force. it was a recipe for victory. this trend continued time and time again. just look at vietnam. the viet cong with stood a pounding from the united states military in the 1960s and '70s especially from the air. we ran into a highly motivated enemy who used the jungles of asa hutchinson -- of asia to their advantage. it's hard to defeat an enemy you can't see. that was only half the battle. the viet cong set up traps and tunnels to ambush american traps. we left knowing we could have done more but wondering if it was enough to win. the soviets faced another proxy war after vietnam.
4:03 pm
soviet troops invaded afghanistan to support communist puppets in kabul. the afghans did not go down a fight. rebels stood up to them with u.s. backing. they fought off the soviets for a decade and retreated back to russia with their tail between their legs. the opportunity to defend off an invasion from a stronger military is the same. so far, the ukrainian resistance is following that blueprint. nato is reporting that as many as 15,000 russians have already been kilts. more than twice the number of american casualties in iraq and afghanistan combined.led. more than twice the number of american casualties in iraq and afghanistan combined. russia has been unable to

a shot at the russians who terrorized their state. in 2003 the u.n. destroyed it the most destroyed citizen on earth. this is the type of terror the russian are capable of but so far unable to penetrate ukrainians insurgents. ukraine's resist not is not slowing down. it's the opposite want they are retaking towns they had previously lost. the city 30 miles west of kyiv fell into russian hands until today. it was a target for the russians. chalk this up to another set back for moscow's failure.
4:06 pm
let this be a lesson: don't doze off in history class. kirk is a retired u.s. navy commander. i am being too optimistic here? it looks like these guys are moving and shaking and hitting supply lines. they have not been able to do what they were supposed to against the capital. >> well, clearly the effort by the russians has stalled. the russians may be pleading out -- bleeding out but the ukrainians have suffered casualties. the u.s. and european allies needs to get more lethal equipment into ukraine with better ranges to give them the ability to take out more russians at greater distances.
4:07 pm
that video was awesome. it showed it doesn't matter what your religion is, those are ukrainians fighting for freedom and should make everybody proud. >> jesse: do you see similar strategy deployed against the russians as in afghanistan or vietnam? >> absolutely. they are taking advantage of the terrain and playing on the home turf and using it to their advantage. one thing the united states did is leaking the intelligence we knew the invasion was coming caused putin to hesitate from 7 to 10 days. in doing that, it's called the spring thaw. you can see that happening time and again. tanks get stuck. convoys have to go off road and don't function. they are making them get bogged down in the spring mud. that's providing a target rich environment for the ukrainians
4:08 pm
taking every advantage they did. but they are losing forces we need more lethal weapons to nail the russians and push them back. >> jesse: is there a chance that not a stalemate in a couple of weeks? a chance that the ukrainians can repel russian forces back? >> it's a possibility. i will be the optimist for one ever these days and say, yes, we could see that. but it's going to take a lot more lethal weapons get to the ukrainians and quicker. the last thing we want to have is europe grow bored of this conflict and they want to get back to normal. we are flowing thousands of our troops and equipment into europe. yet not one european nation today belonging to nato
