ukrainian forces continue some success and counter offensive saying they have taken ground back in the irpin area east of kyiv, ukrainians saying they have pushed russian out there. and russia media reporting they had to evacuate two russian areas due to ukraine firing missile into russian territory. that is significant, because it is first we've heard from sources on both sides they fired ukrainian missile to russia, taking the fight to them. that ukrainian soldier early in the invasion telling a russian war ship where they could go, using an expletive, that soldier being awarded a medal of merit as officials identified him and

honored him. >> carley: well-deserved honor of merit. bring in the mayor of warsaw, poland. mayor, thank you for joining us show this morning. you say the refugee crisis in warsaw is getting worse and worse by the day. how so? >> well, we've welcomed 300,000 refugees and that's a huge number. that is like 15% of my population in warsaw. of course we are dealing with it, solidarity of the people has been immense and work done by the volunteers and services of my city is exemplary and we are helping as much as we can. we are at capacity and if there is escalation in ukraine, we have to deal with second wave of refugees issue the situation will become very, very difficult. that is why we need a relocation system where we all in europe and elsewhere, we share the

burden. ukrainians are fighting for freedom and we need to step up and do our bid. >> todd: how many more refugees will you take in? >> as many as we have to, we declared we are going to help everyone. if you come to warsaw, you will see there are no refugees on the streets, they are at people's homes because people in poland and warsaw are extraordinary and accept ukrainians into their homes. the city services are very much stretched, all my social workers working with ukrainians, we have created centers and my psychologists work with ukrainians, we have granted ukrainians almost like citizen-like status, free education, free healthcare and so on. the conditions would deteriorate if we accept more.

i need the city to function properly, if we get overextended, solidarity will end sooner, we need a system in place, we need the un ajengsies ajengsies -- agencies. this is very much needed, we need to share the burden. >> carley: speaking of the president, he was in warsaw over the weekend and made a powerful speech. at the end he said putin can no longer remain in power. how did you feel about that comment and do you share that view? >> most importantly, you have to understand the level of emotion. president biden and i, we were with refugees and talked to them and heard heartbreaking stories from women and children escaping

bombs, children asking the president whether they will see their fathers again. it was really, really very intense. i think that what president biden was doing, he was expressing outrage. of course i've heard secretary antony blinken's words when he said this is not the goal of american policy to remove putin from power, but we need to be strong when it comes to calling what is evil evil and when it comes to sending a very strong message that the west stands united. putin wanted to divide us, it is important we stand together and leaders such as biden and other prime minister and president give testimony to what we believe in. end of the day, ukrainians are fighting for freedom and values and for the stability of the transatlantic lines.

>> todd: words are great, but you mentioned you need help from the un. what is taking so long? >> the problem is the polish central government didn't call for authorization of the agencies to work, it didn't call for relocation, because it wants to do it alone. no government, let alone, a city, can do it itself. most of agencies are in place. we need to gets the system in place. everyone has to step up. the end of the day, i receive phone calls from ukraine, from my friends and the mayor of kyiv and others who say we can focus on fighting when you take care of our children and our families. we simply cannot do it together in warsaw or poland. we are doing our best, but we

clarifying, saying they are not training, they are liaisons. some lawmakers are not buying it, including james comer. >> when you make gaffes that are details classified information that puts american troops at risk and americans at risk of retaliation of russian cyber attacks, it's a big problem. >> the administration is sending weapons to ukraine with shipments arriving, including bullets and body armor. some thing this is not happening fast enough and they are sending a letter to jake sullivan. the u.s. mission must go on defending against aggression. ukraine can win this fight if we help them win this fight. there are reports u.s. and allies may consider additional aid to ukraine in the weeks ahead, the discussions appear to

interview. welcome home. why did the russian soldiers take you off that bus? >> so they told me that the reason they took me off the bus was because i didn't show them my passport, which i believe they saw, i was the only american among the turkish citizens and they decided they thought i was a spy, they pulled me aside and detained me for 10 days. >> todd: did you understand what was happening at first? >> absolutely not. they had a translator, who was supposed to be on my side, i don't believe he was, there were document necessary complete russian, if i asked him to explain it to me, he would give me a smallgist of what it was. >> todd: what is going through your mind as all of this is happening? >> the only thing, i was getting angry at the beginning, i'm like, i need to leave, i need to

get home to start things for my family. after i realized i wasn't going anywhere, ig started to get worried because it is russia and who knows what they do to american people. >> todd: sure. you are detained. take us through the steps. what happens after you are detained and realize i'm not going anywhere any time soon. >> at first i was like, i was concerned, it is russian prison, i've never been in prison to begin with. i was like very, very worried, but then realized once they started questioning me, they couldn't find anything against me, i'm just an american teacher who chased his wife in a foreign country. i was okay after the third day of them questioning me, they knew nothing was going to happen. it was a scary time to be stuck in a place like russian prison.

>> todd: were there times you thought, this is it, i will never see my wife or family again? >> actually, yes, on wednesday they found a resume on my computer i used as like a template for a new school i was trying to start working for. the guy had some government background and they thought i was part of blackwater or like an american spy since i have military experience. for 3-1/2 hour, he continually told me, you know who this is, i kept telling him, i don't know who this is, i thought i was going to be stuck in russia forever. >> todd: i can't imagine what that feeling is like. what is a russian prison like? >> so it is only about 15 feet wide by 25 feet long. there is a small like seven foot

by seven foot box with a hole in the ground for you to use, a bunk bed on one side and bed on the other. you are in a room with three people, that is small, they smoke cigarettes. beds are made out of metal and they feed you liquid until supper time, which is chicken and buckwheat. >> todd: was there ever any violence? were you scared for your life in the prison resulting from other prisoners? >> surprisingly no. i kind of was expecting something because it is russia. i was in a city that is not like a huge city, not like moscow, the people i was there with were good people. there was one person that was with me, who helped me reach out to my family through instagram. he is still in contact with me and he told

me that the second day after i left there was a guy that came in and had been committed to seven years in prison. he said his last couple days were very scary. >> todd: you saw the reaction from your mother when i had her on this program a few weeks ago, obviously your family worked to get you back home. what is next for you, your wife, your family and will you ever go back to ukraine? >> so i am ever grateful for everything that my family, that amy's office, everything everybody has done for me, it is insane the support we've had. our future plans right now, i'm trying find a way to get a degree in computer science and we are trying to move to florida. that is our rough plan. only time we gallon back to ukraine is to visit her family,

was heard. listening to oral argument for an hour and 40 minutes plus was just powerful in my sense and knowing the wheels of justice begun to turn. >> carley: give us details on the legal slice of this puzzle. why this is all the way up to the supreme court, why leroy was forced to sue and what you are hoping to get out of this? >> thanks for asking. the first piece of the puzzle, leroy was forced to sue because he was not accommodated. he came back from iraq with a debilitating lung and brain disease and couldn't perform functions as a texas state trooper and asked to be accommodated and texas didn't do that. he resigned and we filed a lawsuit. we ended with supreme court

because sovereignty immunity is large and asked the supreme court to say either all states can invoke sovereign immunity or no states can invoke sovereign immunity under statute congress passed knowing it had the power to pass that, that is where we are. >> carley: what was the read you got from the supreme court justices and when will they make a determination on this? >> tough question, knew it was coming. we're not sure. we were prepared going in. we liked our argument. we liked the responses we gave to the justices. we feel we presented a good case and the solicitor general from the united states government presented a great case, which is interesting thing, too, in our support. we just don't know.

there is no way to predict that. we like where we stand and we're happy with what we did. we just don't know what will come from this. we're optimistic is the right way to put that. >> carley: leroy, you represent a lot of injured veterans and sounds like this case is bigger than you and could impact veterans in the future who suffer from injury and may lose their job as a result. >> that is correct. many service members return from -- have returned from this 20-year war with invisible wounds from toxic exposure, it has plagued the veteran community. as citizen soldiers, those that serve part-time military have a right to return to work with limitation, they have a right to keep their employment and jobs.

i thought it would be one or two. 71 law enforcement officers in the windy city do this. how could she go to the child of a dead child and face the parents knowing one of those 71 law enforcement officers possibly could have prevented that kid's death? >> a how could she advocate for defund the police when she knows police is needed not only for her and her community. she is okay with providing it for herself at the same time demonizing law enforcement officers though she has since changed her tune it doesn't matter. not enough just to defund the police department and have personal security for yourself because you are afraid of your own constituents and mess in a city that you created, this is also to me a slap in the face of the law enforcement officers that are repeatedly called racist. apparently they are not racist enough to be barred from protecting someone like a mayor lori lightfoot. there needs to be big changes in this country when it comes to lawlessness and also the way we discuss police officers.
