capital city. pentagon says russian forces have doubled their amount of airstrikes across ukraine in recent days even as peace talks are set to resume virtually just hours from now. president biden says he's working to lower your gas prices by tapping into the nation's strategic petroleum reserve and once again blaming vladimir putin and greedy oil companies but not his administration or policy for why experts doubt the move to release a million barrels a day will actually do much to ease your pain at the pump. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell weighs in exclusively with us tonight . a newly surfaced video from a different angle of the infamous anchor last seen around the world. what it shows jada pinkett smith doing immediately after her husband left for the rock. but we begin tonight , day 37 of russia's war on ukraine with my co-host griff jenkins reporting live on friday morning. now there in las vegas. shannon, good morning. and listen, there is more evidence that russia is doing just the opposite of what they're saying.

a senior defense official telling fox news that russian jets have flown 300 strike missions in the last 24 hours. nato's secretary general jens stoltenberg had this assessment of the battle watch. russia has repeatedly lied about its intentions so we can only judge russia on its actions, not on its words. russia maintains pressure on kyiv and other cities so we can expect at this offensive actions bringing even more suffering. this is fighting continues around the capital , particularly in the suburb of er been liberated by ukrainian forces just days ago, ukrainian officials telling fox news up to three hundred civilians have been killed. you see scenes of destroyed tanks, but the russian attacks continue making life desperate for those residents. >> but the we cooked on a

bonfire. boys brought water. they ran to the well. all this time we were without gas, water. we had nothing. we did not get any humanitarian aid because the fighting was going all the time. and the most intense fighting continuing the besieged seaport of mariupol cut off from the rest of the world. no food, water or electricity. now ukrainian officials say russian forces have blocked sheenan. forty five red cross busses from evacuate desperate civilians. meanwhile, president zelenskyy remains defiant in a late night address to his country. we. >> we endured so much more than the enemy expected. they said three to five days they thought this would be enough to seize the entire state and it's already day 36 and would continue to fight until the end until we have the strength and opportunity so that there are no more monsters left on our land and peace talks will resume again today

virtually. but there is little hope of a quick resolution to this war. meanwhile, there is new reporting tonight that russian troops occupying chernobyl have withdrawn into belarus to get treatment for acute radiation sickness. correspondent matt finn has the details tonight . good evening. that i gripped the defunct nuclear facility was taken by the russians early on in the invasion. now several hundred russian troops have reportedly been pulled out of chernobyl suffering from acute radiation sickness. the mirror reports the russian soldiers fled and were a bus to a medical facility in belarus. now there is a ukrainian state agency that manages the exclusion zone around chernobyl with the goal of protecting the people. one of their employees wrote this about the alleged sick russians on facebook. another batch of irradiated terrorists who sees the chernobyl zone was brought to the belarusian radiation medical center and gomel today. have you dug trenches in the red forest b word now live
10:05 pm
the rest of your short life with this. there are rules for handling this area. they are mandatory because radiation is physics. it works regardless of status or shoulder ranks. now the new york post reports word of the radiation sickness came after ukrainian officials claimed that russian troops looted and destroyed a specialist laboratory containing highly radioactive samples from that decommissioned nuclear plant. those samples believed to have ended up in the hands of the russians. ukrainian president zelenskyy accuse the russians of using the exclusion zone to prepare new attacks. and on thursday, the ukrainian deputy prime minister is insisting that the united nations intervene in the area saying in part quote, we demand that the u.n. security council immediately take measures to demilitarize the chernobyl exclusion zone and introduce a special un mission there to eliminate the risk of a repeat of a nuclear catastrophe. the pentagon confirms russian forces are leaving the chernobyl plant seeming to support the illnesses. but the pentagon cannot confirm if troops left for some type of
10:06 pm
radiation poisoning. we would assess at this early stage that it's of a piece of this larger effort to to refit and resupply and not necessarily done because of lack of health hazards or some sort of emergency or a crisis at chernobyl, the white house was asked about the reports and said it was unable to confirm that russian soldiers are sick from radiation but says it's looking into the matter. and we will keep you updated. shannon grif mesfin live for us with the latest matt . thank you , shannon. all right. crtv 5% mitigates some of the massive gasoline price hikes americans are experiencing by ordering another release of oil from the nation's strategic petroleum reserve. critics from both parties say they're not impressed. white house correspondent kevin court taking a closer look at that move tonight . good evening, kevin. to you, shannon. now beginning this may, the u.s. will release about a million barrels of oil each
10:07 pm
and every day from its emergency reserve and it will actually keep doing that for the next six months, which if you're here in washington, you know what that means almost right up to the midterm elections. now the white house for its part says this is really an effort to try to bring down soaring gas prices. however, even the president says he's not quite sure exactly when americans will see the prices come down. >> my guess is we'll see it come down, continue to come down. but how far down? i don't anyone can tell. >> alas, for all the bluster from sixteen hundred pennsylvania avenue us oil producers, our skeptic goal with the president of the u.s. oil and gas association writing tapping the strategic petroleum reserve for the next six months may get the administration through the midterms, but it does nothing to increase production. they refuse to conduct any new lease sales or expedite existing federal permits and that is a much better option than drawing down our strategic reserves.
10:08 pm
so instead of tackling the problem with a no holds barred approach to energy development, the biden white house is once again releasing oil from the nation's emergency reserves, though in each previous instance there was actually no measurable impact on gas prices. but this time they say things could be different. >> it is going to help meet the mismatch between supply and demand in the market. a million barrels a day is a significant addition to the marketplace. kate bedingfield speaking right there. now the president also claims the price of the pump could fall anywhere between 10 cents a gallon to thirty five cents a gallon and not a lot if you're paying a hundred dollars to fill up your tank. but it is something but also, as you know, shannon, gas prices really are a major driver when it comes to inflation and u.s. households. and to that end we learned today that the personal consumption expenditures that's the pc price index soared six point four percent in the 12 months through february.
10:09 pm
that is the biggest jump since nineteen eighty two. kevin, thank you very much. we'll see you a little bit later. you bet. the president biden taking action thursday under pressure to do something about record high gas prices, up more than 75% since his inauguration 14 months ago. for reaction to the president's latest efforts and much more , let's bring in senate minority leader mitch mcconnell. welcome back. senator , good to see you. glad to be with you. okay, much to discuss. so let's start there you see the prices. there's a lot of concern about what can and can't be done. here's what the president said today about who needs to act on this right now. oil and gas industry sitting on nearly 9000 unused but approved permits for production on federal lands are more than two million unused acres. they have a right to to pump. families can't afford that company sit on their hands. we cannot allow the fossil fuel industry to use this as an
10:10 pm
excuse to reverse everything we're doing to save the planet. so the president says get to work if you've got these leases or you could lose them. but the speaker says this is not about ramping up american production. you know what pelosi and biden said is utter nonsense. what they did as the president came into office is no new lesions on public lands, a whole array of regulators making it difficult to function even in the places where they're allowed to. we were energy independent 19th and 20th 19 and exporting oil and gas. every solution they come up with involves somebody else sending energy to europe rather than and with regard to dropping some of the reserves in a strategic petroleum reserve that like dropping a pebble in the ocean, it's going almost no impact on daily
10:11 pm
consumption. so look, don't blame the gas prices on to started at the beginning of this administration. it is a reaction to the shutdown of fossil of the fossil fuel industry that go after them in every single conceivable way. but we ought to be doing is pumping more of our own to take care of not only our needs but to help the europeans as well. in the midst of this , we are talking about the president's budget and our financial house here at home. here is what the current senate majority leader chuck schumer had to say about that fight. republican can't stand the thought of asking the ultra rich to pay their fair share. republicans seem to think it's radical for the federal government to dedicate resources to a clean energy future. >> so a couple of things there. but of course what we've heard in the headline after headline has been from the democrats. you guys just want to protect ultra rich people. you know, they want to 2.5 trillion dollars in new taxes if they had their way, you'd be
10:12 pm
getting a massive amount of new revenue. that's not what we need. he laid out a budget that increased nondefense about 14% and didn't even increase defense enough to cover the increase in inflation. but we got a war going on in ukraine. our goal ought to be to help the ukrainians win to defeat the russians right there and so we have a defense budget that's simply not realistic. america doesn't need any new taxes. we did tax reform back in 2017. it produced a gusher of revenue about actually lowering the rates, for example, on corporations. gusher of new revenue raising taxes is not a good idea at this particular juncture. you mentioned ukraine there. i think it was the wall street journal that's going to piece out from the editorial board tonight saying we're not doing enough to help ukraine. it seems like there's been a bipartisan swell of support to try to get something done.
10:13 pm
what more do you think we could be doing? i think the problem the president has generally finally gotten around to doing the right thing, but we don't have a lot of time. he's sort of been pulling his punches all along. i don't think we hear the president saying what i think our goal ought to be is to win, not to have some negotiated settlement unless president zelinski is willing to do that . this is extremely important. this is an opportunity for the democratic world to punch this bully right in the nose and others are willing to carry the fight. i was with the ukrainian america today just talking about her relatives back there and how sad the whole situation is. so the answer, as my colleague ben sasse said, give me anything i need and help them win the war. are you worried about broadening an incursion into a nato country that then triggers article five about
10:14 pm
u.s. troops being pulled into this ? i mean, where does this end? well, u.s. troops are not going to cross the nato line, but it's important for us to plus up american troops and european troops in those eastern bloc countries. the administration has done that was the right thing to do. the wrong thing to do is things like preventing these russian migs from being transferred from poland into ukraine. ukrainians have the pilots. they know how to use them. in other words, we ought to be giving them everything we possibly can to help them win this war. talk domestic again, one of the legacies you've got and president trump, something you all did together was to get more people to the federal bench. your nominees get them confirmed in an historic fashion at a pace and the numbers that will always be credited to you and president trump for getting that done. now we're looking at an opening on the supreme court judge ketanji brown . jackson had been to her confirmation hearing and the editorial board at the washington post thought republicans did not behave well
10:15 pm
under the circumstances saying this republicans such as senator lindsey graham have congratulated themselves for declining to treat judge jackson the way democrats handled the nomination of brett m. kavanaugh. in fact, the most relevant measures mr. graham and a handful of other judiciary committee republicans have handled themselves worse. i couldn't disagree more . i don't think she was treated poorly. she was asked about her record and her record. i think was hard to defend. i mean, for example, she has a particularly curious view about certain kinds of criminal behavior in this particular case, people who distribute child of all in every one of the cases where she was sentencing in the child case, she gave out sentences that were below the guidelines that are part of the statute. i think she's a judicial activist. she's very smart. she's very capable. she's going to be exactly
10:16 pm
what president biden wants a very liberal supreme court justice. you've got at least one republican on record now saying she will vote for her . do you expect others? i don't know. found out there next week. well, i want to play something from senator durbin talking about trying to get republicans to come along with this nomination. here's what he said. there are those within the republican party . i from speaking to them who understand the historic significance of this nomination and want to make sure that mr. lincoln's party , the grand old party is on board, at least some of them supporting the nomination. i think that can happen. we're going to continue to work toward that end. what do you make of that sort of the democrats want to make this confirmation about race or gender . we don't look at judges that way. most of all, republicans believe in what's called a strict construction, that is judges who make their very best effort as justice scalia put it, to follow the law and scalia to say if you aren't happy with the outcome, you
10:17 pm
get that sometimes happens when you follow the law. and i think all indications are that judge jackson is going to be a liberal activist from the bench. but the good news for people like me is the court six to three. we made massive changes over the last four years that i think put the court in very, very solid position with a great number of judges who believe in the quaint notion that maybe judge ought to follow law. well, senator , we always appreciate your time. we are going to watch that vote and all the other things keeping you busy on the hill. great to see you. thank you , joe . i'm not a law any curriculum on gender identity and orientation for kindergarten through third graders is sparking strong reaction both for and against. and now officials at disney claim they're going to push for a repeal of the legislation which was passed by elected state lawmakers as the president blasts what he's calling a number of hateful
10:18 pm
state laws. white house correspondent peter doocy has the story. >> president biden's message to those celebrating his transgender day of visibility. we have your back. here's how u.s. citizens can soon apply for passports selecting their gender as x. the tsa will invest eighteen point six million dollars. new gender neutral advanced imaging technology and hhs says it will support puberty blockers and gender affirming surgeries for some adolescents. we're committed to advancing transgender equality in the classroom, on the playing field, at work on military equality on the playing field means something different in some states including arizona, iowa, south dakota and oklahoma. where governors have recently banned transgender women from competing in girls' sports . biological males cannot compete in women's sports . the white house has been most outspoken against a florida law banning lessons about sexual orientation or gender identity from kindergarten through third
10:19 pm
grade. the governor has chosen to target some of florida's most vulnerable students and families all under the guise of parents right. disney sides with the white house and now some disney employees expressed fear about taking the other side, including gop congressional candidate who works as a resort manager. if i were to get fired for my views, i think it would send a wrong message to to conservatives that conservatives would not be welcome at disney in coming months. the doj plans to side with transgender individuals in some cases involving sports and restrooms, parents and children alike. please ask for help and know this . >> you're so brave transgender people are among the bravest in the country according to a white house statement. and part of today's big announcement is that soon visitors here will be able to select x as their gender security protocols are being updated right now at the white house, peter doocy, fox news.

life. dinner now at t.s.a. .com. welcome back to fox news at night special extended coverage of russia's war on ukraine. i'm shannon bream in washington. and that group begins in lviv on a rainy, wet, cold morning here after eight clocks in and well, i know we're learning more tonight friday morning. they're about russia's short term intentions. what can you tell us ? and what we're learning is that it is better to trust the actions of russia rather than the words because just days after vowing to deescalate and pull troops, particularly from the capital in kyiv, we have seen russia double
10:27 pm
their attacks and what they've been doing in the last few days is a fierce counteroffensive is playing out in the northern suburb of kyiv in their pean area that is a significant development. but we are also seeing a very fierce fighting in the southern besieged town of mariupol where life has become terribly desperate. the civilians there cut off from water, food, electricity as the russian forces really focus their attacks there as well. we've learned from ukrainian officials that russians have blocked some forty five busses that were intended to bring civilians out of merry opal, that making life very desperate for those folks. and we are learning that there are increased fighting in eastern donbas region. now one thing we're learning from the nato secretary general jens stoltenberg is that we should indeed expect much more new offensives from russia
10:28 pm
as they regroup and try and refocus their attacks. and let's bring in now discuss the latest developments in ukraine with two of our guests with former deputy assistant secretary of state ken cutter koski along with arizona senate candidate and former air force major general mick mcguire. general, i want to start with you because we learned from a senior defense official yesterday that russian jets have conducted some 300 sorties in just the last 24 hours. what do you make of the battle ? well, you know, that increase in sort of production by the russians is one of the reasons i've been saying for weeks, griff, that we need to allow the ukrainian pilots to go into poland, pick up the mig 29 that the poles offered. biden fumbled this badly here with this change in position that gives them defensive capability. we see how well their ground forces are doing around kyiv and you just talked about
10:29 pm
the fighting in the donbas. we need to allow them to get those mig 29 into the country. well, let's talk about those mig 29 slinn how delicate is this balance? because almost every single night you've seen president vladimir zelenskyy who is no doubt thirty seven days now into this fight a master of communications. and one thing he keeps asking for are things like a no fly zone being declared along with those jets, although he stopped asking by specific example those jets. but that's what he wants because those jets would possibly allow him to effectively effectively close some of the airspace. is that something that nato in the u.s. should be considering and delivering at this point? a detail in the u.s. and all of our allies should be helping president zolensky and ukraine gain leverage? i think whether it's by military means or pr means
10:30 pm
this whole you know, at some point we're going to have to start figuring out how to dial down this conflict. what what helps the ukrainians is leverage that leverage can come in terms of win and that leverage can come in terms of the biden administration actually matching their language with actions. one of the biggest examples, as you know, not just the united states issue, our nato allies can stop buying russian oil. you know, that would certainly put pressure on russia and it would give the ukrainians more leverage. so i think that that's what we what needs to happen and whether we were going to give president zolensky everything he's asking for is not the question that , you know, we certainly can help more , but it doesn't mean that we have to act contrary to
10:31 pm
what american people want us to do. so there's more we can do but not everything that president zalewski wants. well, when you talk about putting pressure on putin, general, let me ask you what you make of these reports that the pentagon saying that putin is perhaps being misled about the failures of his forces in ukraine? >> well, i think it's true that the clearly there's misinformation happening on all sides, but the kremlin i'm sure does not want to admit to its people or to its forces how badly it's going. you know, to lenny's point about economic pressure. one of the things you mentioned when we started this , it's rainy and cold. the weather is shifting. much of the grain that is in europe is grown in that region. the leverage that can be increased is reminding people if those farmers in the south part of the country are unable to put in their crops, there's going to be suffering much
10:32 pm
worse than just in the ukraine. maybe that brings china to bear and others to say we've got to stop this thing de-escalate and get him to pull back because clearly in the conventional forces the ukrainians are winning every minute that passes plays into the hands of zelinski and they will prevail the longer it goes. linda, we're hearing some reports unconfirmed by ukrainian officials, unconfirmed by fox news, but it is reports crossing the wires. reuters reporting that ukrainian helicopters may have struck inside russia striking a fuel depot in belgorod. the information stems from the russian regional governor belgorod. how significant would that be in terms of a development of ukraine taking the fight inside russia? well, it's actually a vintage russian disinformed play. you've seen how putin operates
10:33 pm
. he's trying to portray the you know, russia and russian controlled regions in the east as victims. he's looking for a pretext to do what he wants to do anyway. i would not trust reporting out of any russian official. obviously crossing the border would would would not be favorable for ukraine because it would give putin more pretext to exercise brute power. and that's really, you know, putin's military philosophy used brute power and brute power doesn't use barberry power so that he's looking for a pretext to do that . and but at the same time, i would i would approach that information with a healthy grain of skepticism. yeah, well, i think that's great advice and great insight. lynn khodorkovsky, megan mcguire, thank you for

really good. and we've have a family that arrived to last night that they were leaving because they have access to insulin. their child diabetic. and so there's those kind of things that happen. and yeah, there's a lot of need and we're just really impressed that romanian people have come up and joined us . and it's been it's an honor. well, we are grateful to see people selflessly working in that region like you too and everybody who's working along with you. the washington post is this the exodus staggering in its scale and speed has turned into the fastest growing refugee crisis in europe since world war two. the conflict has forced about one in four people out of their homes seeking refuge within the country or across its borders. it has also uprooted half of ukraine's children, raising fears of the threat of human trafficking. john, how worried are you about all of these spinoff problems that are coming from this ? yeah, it's it's really deep in my heart. i was in and i was coming back from romania and i was
10:43 pm
looking at some pictures of children who had lost their fathers to the war and i just broke down crying right there on the airplane. it breaks my heart to know that we can see so much human human evil. it's really almost surprising. but i want to really highlight that while there is so much human evil, we talked about the, the human trafficking, there's also a ton of human virtue that we see, especially from the romanian side and the ukrainians the ukrainians are not coming to this camp to be refugees. they don't like to be known as refugees. they're coming to serve each other, which i think is just that's the real thing we need to focus on . and quickly, i'm not sure which of you is the best to answer this question. is there a link? is there a way that people could donate or help or get involved? yeah, contact mission has done an amazing job. you see the link there to go
10:44 pm
k.m. usa unlike most ngos, contact mission is actually giving 100% of all funds received to ukrainian relief and so we have kind of a three pronged approach. we have ministries that are inside of ukraine that are providing food deeper into the country to places like harkov and odessa and even to erping. we had a bible college there that was also bombed a few days ago. our second prong is we are taking food across the border into live from poland, from germany and then we are receiving refugees in romania. and so those are kind of the three three ways that we're attacking the issue. and it's a very fluid situation. but we believe with those three methods will have the most effect. god bless you guys. caleb and john, thank you so much for what you're doing. and like i said, everyone working along with you, thanks for you. thank you so much.

fox news and a special extended coverage of russia's war on ukraine. i'm shannon bream in washington. photographer in lviv. okay, so griff, are there any signs now that the russians are holding on to that promise or at least these vowels or language that they used that is talking about actually pulling back forces? well, if you say language and because it is indeed words that are falling empty from russian negotiators, this has been a significant week as we entered the sixth week of fighting day thirty seven of this war in ukraine because on wednesday we saw the russian negotiators vowing to pull back their assault on the capitol in kyiv. but yet we learned yesterday from a senior defense official that the russian jets have conducted some 300 strike missions intensive their attack there and not just around the kyiv area where ukrainian forces are gaining ground in a
10:51 pm
counter offensive in the northern suburb of terpene where fighting has been intense . but in the south as well, in mariupol, the city that has just reduced to rubble the civilians there cut off from water, food and electricity. we're learning a troubling development there, i should mention also and that is that some forty five red cross busses sit into mariupol intending to bring civilians out, evacuating them ultimately all the way here in the west are being blocked by russian forces. and another thing we're watching this early morning, it's about 10 minutes till 9:00 a.m. local. we get some updates every morning. sheenan from the u.k. intelligence services. now the u.k. intelligence service today is suggesting that we could see intense fighting happening not only in mariupol but even in the suburbs of kyiv. so it's certainly a lesson that we have learned this week from the russians as we go into
10:52 pm
friday here and that is you have to trust their actions right now more than their words. shannon, sage advice. all right, chris , thank you very much. stand by . we're going to wrap up our special extended coverage of the war on ukraine tonight , trying to do it on a positive note. i think we all need that . senior correspondent laura engel has the story of a new jersey synagogue that not only collected several tons of donations for the people of ukraine. the group then went that extra mile actually many miles. hey, laura shannon, it took just over a week for this jewish community in new jersey to collect, travel and distribute nearly 30000 pounds of medical supplies and food to the people on the front lines of the worst humanitarian crisis europe has seen since world war two before when a train was coming to poland in history, we would think polish trains death. now we're thinking polish trains life. >> it's the lucky ones who are fortunate enough to get a train
10:53 pm
ticket to flee the ravages of war and ukraine and once in poland they navigate the rail stations in cities like warsaw and krakow. it was the old train stations of these cities where more than 80 years ago million were deported and sent to concentration camps to be murdered. an irony that is not wasted on those who are carrying out this mission. >> poland is really redefining itself as the savior as the strength, as the source of hope for the ukrainian people in a way that gives it a new narrative that i think is appropriate and right and quite beautiful. >> rabbi david sayf kershner leads the faithful at temple emanuel in a matter of days. a team of 11 people geared up and embarked on their mission to the war zone armed with a special visa that allowed them to cross into ukraine so that the group could hand deliver medical supplies to where they were most needed ,most wounded by war, whether they're warriors or whether they're civilians or being
10:54 pm
brought to these outside hospitals to be treated because the interior hospitals of the large cities and kharkiv and in kyiv and labov are far too dangerous. >> standing in solidarity with refugees, this rabbi sees past what many call russian propaganda which claims that ukraine is harboring. >> i don't put much stock in the things that vladimir putin or other madmen who are out to hurt innocent people say none of that mattered to me. what mattered to me was that they were created by god. they were human beings and they were in a moment of challenge and i could give them some of the necessities and aid that they needed. then i was partnering with god to do the holy work that i've been called upon to do. and the team from new jersey says the hardest part of the trip was knowing that they could go back to their own homes while knowing that the people that they were helping might never see theirs again. shannon, laura , thank you very much. we're going to wrap it up here. you see my colleague halfway around the world, griff jenkins. how are things feeling? quick mood check as morning is dawning there friday.
10:55 pm
