and despite the process repeated attempts to get into that city to bring in eight and to rescue people, so far they have failed, mike. >> what is the assessment of strategies to troops begin to pull out of that area around kyiv? >> we are seeing evidence that russian forces aren't leaving the kyiv region for many officials in the western end here in ukraine worn this could just be a redeployment they would bring possibly troops back in or rerouting some of those troops to hit the east and the south along the coastline even harder to again connect to the land bring between crimea and the rest of the eastern region in southern region of ukraine. so a lot is unknown at the moment, mike. but again it appears according to what we are seeing on the ground in kyiv russian forces are pulling back in one of the thing micro quick officials on the ground say while they are pulling back, ukrainian forces are fighting them as they leave and not just letting them believe they are protecting their territory, mike appeared. mike: jeff paul sorting this off

them lviv tonight thanks very much. forced to leave their homes and family members behind, refugees that have left ukraine to escape the escalated violence are adjusting to the new realities. alexis mcadams brings us their story from poland, hi alexis. >> good evening mike. from poland i can tell you more than 2 million ukrainian refugees have made their way here to poland, thousands come by the day. they do not know the language here, they do not know the people. they were not familiar with anything they had a pretty much leave at the clothes on their back was white so important right now the polish families are opening their hearts and opening their homes to these refugees, take a look here on your screen this is from inside one of those homes in the southeastern area near the ukrainian polish border are the busiest crossings nearby for the families you see from seeing with a local family. that homeowner is a business owner said he gave this family a place to live, food and closing all for free but ukrainian

refugees, they traveled just a few bags because they had no idea where they were even going or where they would end up staying. grateful for the support of the polish families who stepped up in this time of crisis. >> we are grateful to poland and to those who helped us along as we were coming here. we were not sure whether we would be heading with a roof over our heads. >> just do something to make the world better at the moment. >> it polish friends have talked to say it's really not a big deal for them to take the extra steps and open their homes but really takes a lot of effort a lot of money for these families stupid border crossings you see here rather still very busy. volunteers are preparing for new waves of refugees at those border crossings who finally been able to make it out to some the hardest hit areas like mariupol and countries born

ukraine refugees consent reception centers if they can't say with wrens or relatives. they're giving food, medical care and information about where they can travel too. the eu's grant ukrainians who are fleeing the war the right to stay at work run is 27 member nations for up to three years where they can also have social welfare and access to housing, medical treatments and schools for the question tonight is how many more refugees can poland accept? >> well, that's a question for the government of course. but at some point we will because there's like 2 million more people in the country but has around 6 million. it's one of the richest countries in the world we are coping with the situation. but we do not know how long we can last. >> is refugees continue to flee from ukraine by the day, major cities in poland including warsaw are saying they have reached their capacity by they want to help as many people as they can there so many refugees here for their infrastructure has been pretty much

overwhelmed, micro. >> alexis i think many of us have been inspired by the warm embrace the polish people have given to these ukrainian refugees. are you seeing any immediate needs the refugees need right now? they are lacking right now? or is it really just this is going to be an ongoing longer-term crisis until they world is really going to need to take care of these people long-term? >> good question. think ongoing because they have a lot of supplies so they get them food, clothing, they don't really know or they are going next. they're not going to take tons of these supplies by the backpacks because they don't know whether saying the next day but that's why some of these people are trying to find more permanent residences for the really here in poland to because they want to be as close ukraine is possible but even the tried to move the people away from the border crossing people are just hoping they will be able to go home soon because for them this is all temporary they're not worried about their safety, they worry about their family members and friends who are in ukraine, mike. mike: alexis on the he-man

ukraine is up for ukraine to decide. but the military future of this attack has to be pushed back for that us by were doing so much to back president zelenskyy and his military. >> for example, document the additional $300 in security systems going from the night states to ukraine with the president and this administration has allocated $2.3 billion to the war-torn country paid some of those items on the list include rocket systems that are laserguided, other types of artillery and some soviet made tanks the u.s. and european allies trying to get those tanks to ukrainians as soon as possible. the president also signed off on $800 million to ukraine just a few weeks ago in the middle of march. >> we will continue to help ukraine defend itself the security assistance such as these articles we are talking about, as long as we can and as fast as we can.

the war began. russian forces, naval forces have located that port. after a relatively period of quiet there have been occasional over the city. but extremely loud attacks from rockets from afar. these would be a large caliber ground to ground missiles. as we understand launch from the crimea region by russia. they had the port area and fuel depots for debts and burning all day. we have no details of casualties paid those things are not generally disclosed by ukraine. that is a matter of policy. but of course it's been a very quiet day and perhaps 80% less people on the streets than usual as a result of this first attack on the center of odesa which is the third largest city and the

only functioning port ukraine still has. and i'm very interesting contacts there. lawrence, they become a target of the russian state try to shut up the food and water make it difficult for people to continue to fight them. any signs of food shortages and or water going away? >> absolutely nothing of the sort even when the missiles landed there is no cutoff of power there's been no cut off of water. most basic services are functioning here as they usually do. this is a very interesting city. it is a melting pot. it is historically a jewish city until 1941. until 1941. and so has a very individualistic feel about it. it is extraordinarily well defended. it is set on hills and it is built on limestone with caves and caverns and tunnels. three layers deep under the

city. you can imagine with all the fortification the innate russian troop is trying to land here amphibious sleep would have their hands very, very full. this is extraordinarily important place. mike: you made reference to the jewish population how are they reacting to russia's narrative? >> is taking in something of a joke after the jewish president whose brothers and relatives were aghast, executed during the holocaust. not to mention the fact that when president zelenskyy was in power ukraine also had a jewish prime minister. this city now officially self identifying jews are 4% the population. in reality, everyone you talk to will tie them jewish relatives and use russian surnames. but everyone says there's so jewish heritage.

spirit what is your reaction to what we're seeing a focus on odesa on the coast by the russians and perhaps somewhat withdraw from the suburbs of kyiv? >> first, up in the north in kyiv i think the battle for kyiv is over. i think it is a huge developments. you remember churchill said after the battle of north africa he said this is not the end of world war ii. it's not even the beginning of the end. just may be the end of the beginning. by holding and kyiv it survived in putin's had a catastrophic failure which was just subjugate ukraine. it lives survives and lived to fight another day the eastern and southern ukraine because ukrainians were going to be capable of even pushing and defeating and foiling a russian

objective. the other area of ukraine as well. >> you think putin realized ukraine answerable willing to fight to the death to protect their capitol so other targets might be better to attack? >> i think it was only because he knew he could no longer and i think his army in the north was in great danger encircled and destroyed because of ukrainian forces had to take this retreat under great duress. on think this forces in the north of a combat effective for long time. not sure they can be rotated to the fight in the east. i think putin is scaling back some of his objectives create the land bridge between eastern ukraine declared some kind of

at more risk in terms of national security without solving the problem of pricing for that about a day and a half worth of world oil consumption. it's barely going to move the needle if at all sustainably print americans are hurting he's giving lip service to score political talking points with a policy that just runs through november coincidentally. and will do nothing to strengthen our energy independence. and in the meantime we are still sending money to russia for oil. even though the sanctions have been announced they have not started. into the biden administration needs to be tougher and stop feeling the big government solutions and let the oil and gas sector drill. >> but does not seem interested in upsetting the progressive left of his party are you convinced to take decisive action on this major problem at some point? >> well i would hope he would. he has a duty to the american people to keep us safe keep our economy and our country strong

and prosperous. he is not showing a will to do that. in fact his administration has conducted over 81 measures that are putting the boot on the neck of the gas and oil industry by that is what has hurt the american family not just at the gas pump in terms of their electric heating bills but it is a grocery store. we have a coming food shortage as well but he has acknowledged. if we do not get to work on these problems to the green energy lobby we are going to been really deep trouble later this year for. >> as you mentioned the prom with high fuel prices impacts everything. it cost to move products into a community, this higher transportation costs can get folded into virtually everything we buy. that sounds like it's going to make our inflation problem even worse, is that right? >> we are going to see rampant inflation this year. i spent nearly two decades in the energy markets but i know we're going to continue to see

high energy prices. but we are also going to continue to see food prices spiking. oil and gas prices are up about 50% this year. we have got things like corn and soybeans up 20%. the inputs that go into that the diesel fuel, the fertilizer, the chemicals that are all petro -based. those are going to continue to go up and make it harder for farmers around the world to produce food and harder for consumers to get the food that they need. we are already seeing that in lesser developed countries. but are going to the imf and the world bank asking for assistance for food. span you have that back on the energy commodity markets but what is the overall impact of these issues on our nation's economy? >> well it is dire. if you have a strong economy that is generally driven by affordable, accessible, reliable energy. it feels transportation, certainty in terms of investments. we employ hundreds of thousands

of individuals around the world in terms of the oil and gas sector. millions around the world hundreds of thousands in america. we have this blue-collar boom that happened under president trump when he unleashed energy strength he became energy independent. we reduced our admissions below the paris climate accord even though we were not a part of it. we were able to deliver these solutions while becoming an energy supplier to the world. it would enable us to get off of russia, iran, venezuela, to stand up to china who is now partnering with russia. so biden's policies are dangerous but he is hiding behind putin. that is not typical of an american president to blame things on someone else when we are the ones in control. >> former jordan number georgia senator and give your time and analysis. >> thank you mike. spin up go to the touchscreen map for the latest from ukraine as they fight back against russian forces, that is next.

>> you got the big map where should we go, to kyiv? >> to put things in the broader context for the last few days russian forces have a withdrawing and moving up in this kind of wheeling direction. around to the donbas this area right down here. so this is probably going to be the next focus of the military operation for the target though the crown jewel is mariupol for that is what they want. right now it has been under siege for several weeks it's a question of time and attrition of food and supplies and ammunition to how long they can hold out. >> at a guess on earlier talk with them battle temporal pickup and odesa critical port city what about that? >> absolutely. as a navy man i'm very keenly interested in what happens when the coast. there is another part of this do that china is watching. eight naval environment down here is conducive i do have a short side antiship missile you could push the russian forces. what they have been during the last few weeks as they come out

and crimea that they launch their cruise missiles either near odesa but also up into this area. you have seen several attacks in this area with long-range cruise missiles. if you have the missiles antiship missiles you could push them back you can also hold them at risk that definitely gives them a much higher cost if they want to keep that up. they will go out, they'll shoot the go back the repeat over and over again. arthel: was considered the crown jewel of the ukrainian capitol birth they are backing their what you make of it? >> so kyiv was deafly phase one or part one of a bad plan. the real goal, it always seemed to be just looking at the disposition of military forces and the laydown was always the donbas bird by stretching all their forces out phase will was a failure by the redirecting but they have into this region and trying to get mariupol before they enter into any negotiations progresso to see if i can flip

the map to show, we've heard reports of atrocities and some of these places just outside kyiv does that reflect a frustration of russians soldiers or breakout of discipline? >> i would not equate it to a breakdown on discipline they went in that with the intent of liberating in their mind, and their words eight nazi regime that was in kyiv for the wholly inaccurate totally false many of the conscript's are realizing that within the first 24 hours of crossing the border. so, what i think you are seeing is the elimination of a political and community leaders that were troublesome to the russians that they do not want to deal with again. so definitely war crimes, definitely atrocious behavior. not necessarily a loss of discipline that i see necessarily. mike: what you think the level of morale is for officers and vladimir putin's army at this point who are shooting at their neighbors in ukraine and probably wondering why dhec they are doing it? >> there's action a couple

different levels to this there's the conscripts in the wider russian public that i think never saw the possibility they'll be going to war against their brothers and sisters in ukraine. they are very, very close until february 25 the second day of the invasion trade than the reality is they are actually at each other's throats. so at the street level, the everyday person russian and ukraine that is gone. and i think there's probably still a lingering morale problem with the conscripts is just getting worse. when you get up to the officers. they do not have a middle noncommissioned officer ranking because right from conscripts and junior enlisted folks to write up into the officers paid one of the reasons they are losing semi generals and admirals. that group i think there's probably a breakdown but it's hard to discern at this stage how widespread it might be. spin networking some reports of the worst atrocities in these places. brent sadler thanks for much thanks your service thanks your time sir appreciate it. more follow-up for will smith
