democrats in the midterms, but now one of the more radical democrats says her party could be in real trouble. >> lara. >> the recent wild behavior from fans to athletes and the message it sends to our kids. >> but first, a new book from two reporters at the new york times reveals that then-presidential candidate joe biden and his wife jill were wary of choosing kamala harris as his running mate. jill biden said during the conversation about harris when she became a leading candidate, quote: there are millions of people in the united states, why do we have to choose the one who attacked joe? and this was the attack that july biden was talking about the. >> to hear you talk about the reputation of two united states senators who built their reputations and career on segregation of race in this country. if you know, there was a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate

her public schools, and she was bussed to school every day. and that little girl was me. >> mischaracterization of my position across the board. i did not praise racists. i agreed that everybody -- anyway, my time's up, i'm sorry. [cheers and applause] jackie: this is just the latest in a growing list of problems for the vice president. there are now 13 people who have left her office. last week her chief of staff announced her departure. joey, i want to come to you first on this because we've seen this before. on the debate stage, it can get very heated, and we've seen candidates go after each other, and afterwards they kiss and make up. here they ended up being on the same ticket together ask winning the election, but it was jill biden who seemed to hold a grudge here. >> yeah. listen, if i were biden, i would feel the same way. not just jill biden, but president biden. i would feel the same way.

who are you asking when you say why do we have to pick the one person that attacked joe? and that's kind of the problem here is doesn't joe biden get to pick his running mate? and if he doesn't pick his running mate, who did? the easter bunny? i kind of dressed like one toda. [laughter] but we saw the easter bunny give him direction. i would completely understand joe biden 23409 wanting kamala harris as a running mate. but then look at the attacks she levied against him and following that attack he promises to have an african-american woman as a running mate, and he put himself in that corner, and she was from those metrics perhaps the best candidate available. then you ask yourself why are those the metrics, and you kind of go down these rabbit holes of identity politics rather than just picking whomever that he can get along with and get stuff done with. >> well, now chief of staff ron klain at that moment said kamala harris, lara, was the most

qualified person for the position. but as we see all these departures from her cabinet, as we see that he was the border czar and yet never went down to the border, we have to question if, in fact, she really was. >> well, of course she wasn't. i mean, you look at kamala harris, what was it that she was, jackie, bringing to the table? and it's exactly what joe is by said, it was all about identity politics. this as a woman i find incan credibly frustrating -- incredibly frustrating, to have our first female vice president of the united states, i mean, she is an epic failure. you just talked about the fact she is the border czar. she has accomplished nothing, has barely made it down to our southern border. the problem is about to become worse, but she's an embarrassment every time she goes out on a national stage, an international stage. she was not chosen based on merit, she was chosen based on virtue signaling and pandering to get votes from women and minorities. and what a bad way to ever choose someone for any position.

it should also be -- always be based on merit, it should only be basedded on merit. and i've got to tell you as a woman i find this incredibly frustrating because i never want to think that i got a job based on how i looked. but joe biden was the first to tell us that is exactly how he picked his vice president, it was the only requirement he had. >> sure, i agree with you on that. i want to share with everyone an excerpt from this book on the vice president selection process. yes, harris had attacked biden more harshly than any other major candidate in the democratic primaries, yet the biden family had seen it as a smear and a betrayal and claims assessment that would work to biden's advantage. choosing harris will show people that you're ago magnanimous and forgiving, klain told biden, show the country what a unifying leader you can be. and that word, unifying, leo, there is no unity here. your thoughts on that excerpt.

>> oh, i'll tell you right now, klain is absolutely wrong. the reason why i voted for president donald j. trump, i'll give you two reasons, joe biden and kamala harris. [laughter] they have put this country in a horrible situation. i'm serious. i'm being dead serious. fox has the video. joe biden insulted african-americans, you vote for trump, you ain't black. these two play the race card. so why are they mad at each other? they play it. and guess what? the american -- this country is at risk. we got a man that everyone sees as president who's not all there. and then you have a vice president who cannot articulate a complete thought. you have to question whatever she says. and she has not demonstrated as vice president any progress or success. and trust me, i have a history with her. as an attorney general of the state of california, she was a disaster. as the district attorney, she was a disaster.

that unifies the alliance to nato, to your point about nay to toe, so we're going to continue to do that work and we're not going to give up. >> two points here, joey. number one, she's sort of speaking down to her audience in this juvenile way, but we've seen her do that before. and the second aspect is she's dodging a question about the border which she is supposed to be in charge of and title 42. >> yeah. i really think that there's just no cooperation, no synergy inside the white house between the president and vice president. i don't know who you blame here. i don't know if kamala harris has all these fantastic ideas and a much better way of communicating and her own boss is undermining her or if she's just checked out because she never wanted to be vice president, she wanted to be president. i don't know what the answer is, but as an american, this is my vice president, and she can't answer a question on hot topics ever. whatever the pressing issue is, especially if she's involved in it, it seem like her answers go further away from it, and i don't understand that, but it's incredibly disappointing.

♪ ♪ >> welcome back to "the big sunday show." the crisis at our southern border intensifies as we learn more about a missing texas national guard soldier who is believed to have drowned while trying to save two illegal migrants crossing into texas on friday. the soldier's identified as 22-year-old bishop evans. the illegal migrants who needed his help were drug smugglers. governor greg abbott calling out biden and the democrats for

creating danger at the border earlier on "sunday morning futures" with maria. >> obviously, what has happened is a tragedy. it shows how dangerous it is on the border. it shows heroism by the member of the texas national guard who was trying to save lives. so a total disaster created not only by president biden and his administration, but by the democrats across the board. >> meanwhile, crickets from the media on the search for one of our missing service members. abc only airing 20 seconds' worth of coverage a since friday. none of the other networks mention it. i'm going to go to you, lara. you know, this story really bothers me. this is news. a texas guardsman gave his life up to help, that's news. but to have crickets, you have stone silence other than a 20-second sound clip by abc. i can ask you the law question, why, but it doesn't fit their narrative, does it?

>> well, no, it definitely doesn't fit their narrative. don't forget, leo, these networks were the folks that basically carried joe biden across the finish line. it was because of all of their help. they didn't report on things like the hunter biden laptop story, they did everything they could to coddle joe biden all the way through the campaign until the election. and so, you know, for them they're the folks that got the guy elected, that caused the crisis on our southern border. so i'm not surprised that they don't want to talk about it. it would probably go to make them look bad, but it is shocking, leo, that we haven't yet heard anything from the white house on this. remember when the democrats lied and tried to tell us that we had border patrol agents whipping migrants coming into america? that was a total the, flat-out lie. they jumped in as soon as they could to make a statement about that. where is the white house on this? it is disgusting. >> spot on, lara. spot on.

a double standard. you know, joey, when you look a. all of a sudden you've got democrats talking about keeping title 42, a trump policy, in place. here's henry cuellar, a texas democrat, talking about the consequences of lifting title 42. >> you know, it's, title 42 is a health issue, but then it's all interrelated. it's all interrelated. you know, this message of lifting title 42 is going to go straight to the criminal organizations. and remember, the last six months there were over a million encounters and doesn't even include the getaways. you multiply that by an average of $8,000, that's over $8 billion that they made, and that doesn't even include drugs. >> you know, joey, i think cuellar has been sincere from day one -- >> absolutely. >> -- as a border democrat.

these other 42 democrats jumping on the bandwagon because november's around the corner. do you believe they have the sin sin iser isty of honestly wanting to keep title 42, or are they just playing politics? >> i only have a little bit of time, first of all, i believe henry cuellar is a hispanic-american, just from the cues of his name, i'm not sure, but he's definitely a democrat, and he's definitely in the border part of texas, and he understands this issue more than anyone regardless of if he's hispanic or not. it's not racism that's moving him, it's not xenophobia, it's the understanding that no one is hurt -- and i mean this. i'm from a town that's 78% his tannic -- hispanic. no one so pressed more than people who come here illegally and live in the shadows. i truly believe that. even if you have the quick act of going to the health department to get free health care or not paying taxes, you're limited in such big ways. a lot of these people come here and send most of their money back to mexico where their

family is, or they live two or three families to a household. it's not a fun life. but they believe that's the only way to come here and take advantage. of the jobs that are available to them that are available, and they are needed for it. this is what you do. you don't rely on title 42. that's a scapegoat, and i think that's a cheap use of policy because it's the government abusing its power by saying we're doing this for this reason, but it's meant for that reason. i don't believe in that. you build the wall, you institute rea main in mexico, then -- remain in mexico, then you allow for daca, you do allow for that, and then you redo our immigration system and provide a way for people to come here, or earn a living and do it by paying taxes and being a part of the system, not living in the shadows. there isn't a politician out there that doesn't believe that, they're just scared to death of giving trump the win of building the wall or give democrats the win of daca. partisanship is has killed our border, and that's what we need to fix. >> i agree with you 100%.

title 42 has slow down the massive increase of illegal immigrants coming into this country during the biden administration, and we have, what, over 1.7 million border encounters based on fiscal year 2021. miami's population is about 450,000. atlanta's population, 488,000. seattle's population, 725,000. and san francisco's population, about 875,000. austin, texas, population more than 950,000. jackie, over a million illegal immigrants have come into this country. if you take away title 42, it's going to increase the flow, and that, to me, is a windfall for the drug dealers, the coyotes and the drug smugglers. how do you see it? >> it sure is. and, actually, we're on track for this fiscal year to even surpass that level. if you lift title 42 and

essentially give everybody an open message as if it wasn't open enough that they can come now, they will continue to come in droves and literally inundate this country. and without having the checks and balances and a system in place, it will essentially overload the states on the border, it will overload the law enforcement folks who are down there who are trying to protect us. and i just want to make one point about bishop evans. i think this administration owes his family an an apology. in the line of duty, he did what every american would do, he went to try to save somebody's life. but to put his own life in danger to try to help illegal immigrants who were stuck in the water that were carrying drugs into this country, it just, it's shameful, it's unfortunate that this had to happen to him, and they owe his family an apology. >> absolutely. >> i agree with you 100%. and, by the way, kamala harris is in charge of the border for joe biden. next, a fox news alert,

>> a fox news alert, as the war in ukraine enters its third month, ukraine president zelenskyy says he's meeting with secretary of state blinken and defense secretary austin. trey yingst is live in kyiv with the latest. trey. >> reporter: lara, good afternoon. these reported meetings come as ukraine marks two months since russia launched its invasion into this country, and the civilian death toll does, unfortunately, continue to rise. in the southern porty of odesa, at least 8 people were killed overnight when russian missiles slammed into a residential block. we know a mother and her three-month-old baby are among the dead, a stark reminder of

those stuck amid this war. in mariupol russian troops are reportedly trying to storm a steel plant where more than a thousand ukrainian soldiers and civilians are trapped underground. ukraine's deputy prime minister calling on the united nations to demand a ceasefire in order to create humanitarian evacuation routes. >> translator: if our people are killed in mariupol, there will be a referendum. ukraine will leave any negotiating process. >> reporter: intense fighting continues along the front lines in the eastern part of this country. tank battles and artillery fire are reported. we do know the capital of kyiv remains under fire by russian troops. earlier today multiple times we heard air raid sirens throughout the city. lara? >> well, trey, we certainly hope that you are staying safe over there, and we're always thinking about these guys bringing us the

latest. we appreciate it. obviously, we're entering the third month of this war now, and i'm wondering, is there any sense from the experts how long this war could last? if i mean, entering the third month now, it's a place i don't think a lot of us expected to be x who has the advantage the longer this thing goes on? any ideas? >> there's a real understanding here that this war could drag on for months if not years. the real problem for the ukrainians has to do with the battle environment in the second fades of the war -- phase of the war. early on when russian forces were trying to target the ukrainian capital of kyiv, they were faced with a lot of urban fighting in long streets and expressways leading to the capital city, and they were hit hard with javelin anti-tank missiles and ukrainian artillery to push back that offensive. now with most of the fighting focused in the eastern donbas region, it's very open fields and rural areas that these troops are fighting in, and that does give russian force an advantage. it's part of the reason that

ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy has requested these heavy weapons, the 72 artillery units to come to ukraine and help those soldiers to push back russian forces as they try to enter this eastern part of the country. >> trey, this is joey. i have a question that's kind of multi-part here, so i'll try to keep it simple. we've talked about mariupol and the coningation of russian troops in the east and the fact that there are better corridors for logistics. they've been fighting there for a long time. but mariupol specifically, this week we've heard about the steel plant and about civilians trapped there. have the russians given any specifics as to why they're continuing to attack it? i know they all through this war said, you know, we'll give this humanitarian corridor, then they strike. we rarely hear if they give a justification for why they're doing it. and the second part of the question is are the ukrainian military looking to try to save those people, mount an offensive against that? >> reporter: it's a really interesting question because i think it goes along with the

information war that's taking place right now. often times the russians say they're not going to do something, and then they do just that. and last weekend we heard russian president putin discussing this issue, and throughout the week top russian generals talking about this steel plant in the besieged city of mariupol. and even president putin in moscow said that he had ordered forces to stand down and not storm the plant where there are these nuclear bunkers underground where ukrainian soldiers and civilians are staying at this moment but then we see this report from the ground today that russian forces are bombarding the plant. so it's difficult to get a sense about what the russians actually want to accomplish here, but part of the reason russian troops were ordered not to go into the plant was because this is an extremely difficult fighting environment. there are a number of different places where different units not only the ukrainian marines who were left behind, but also these battalion militia groups would be able to fight against russian forces on the ground in mariupol. as for what the ukrainians are doing to try to save those

individuals, they're at a point right now where it's very difficult to save the soldiers and civilians who are trapped in this steel plant. it's part of the reason that ukrainian president zelenskyy and top officials here in kyiv are calling on organizations like the united nations to demand an evacuation corridor for those who are currently inside the plant. so far those demands and requests have been met with really no response by the russian troops on the ground and also by officials in moscow. >> trey, it's jackie deangelis. yesterday zelenskyy made that announcement that lloyd austin and antony blinken would be coming to ukraine although the united states hasn't confirmed that. fox on the -- thoughts on the ground about their visit if it were to be, you know, an about of reality, and also to me, underscores the fact that president biden himself isn't making a visit. is anybody talking about that? >> reporter: look, right now people here in kyiv and across ukraine are so focused on this war and they understand that the russian offensive has not slowed

at all in the east. so it is symbolic that that these u.s. officials are reportedly here on the ground in the capital city of kyiv, and we can expect ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy to make more requests for hey weapons from those -- heavy weapons from those officials directly. >> trey, leo terrell here. i've got about 15 seconds. just a very quick question. with all the lies coming from russia, coming from putin as to what they say they're going to do and doing just the opposite, how does zelenskyy and the ukrainians decipher what they can believe? if. >> reporter: it's extremely difficult. there's a massive propaganda effort being waged against ukraine and against the world from russian president vladimir putin and all of the russian officials. they want the world to believe what's happening on the ground is for the good of europe and for the good of the russian people. the reality is the russians are killing civilians. there is clear evidence of war crimes being committed against the civilian population here, torture, rape and executions

>> welcome back to "the big sunday show." 9 fans and athletes are going wild at games across the country. yesterday an unruly yankee fan hurled trash at players after the yankees won. >> the yankees are telling the fans, stop throwing things. that's disgraceful. that's not yankee stadium. those aren't yankee fans. hooligans. >> in minneapolis an animal rights protester ran on the course during the timber wolves/grizzlies game. she was tackled by security and escorted out, and the athletes are even getting into it. this brawl in portland, maine, between minor leaguers. what is behind the recent wild behavior? joey, i'll start with you. we've seen this on planes, right in people are angry about the masking policy, it feels like it's post-pandemic rage, that's one theory, but it could be something else. i'm wondering what row think. >> i think this is just sports.

i really do. we, unfortunately, had a year and a half without a lot of sports, so there might be some pent-up frustration or energy. i mean, i can show you video of nascar drivers duking it out 30 years agoing hockey players fight every night. the stuff at yankee stadium, last year the tennessee volunteers' fans threw trash on the field, you know? it's this passion, and passion's got that go somewhere -- gotta go somewhere, and i'd rather it be in sports. >> lara, it's not just the fans, i think we have video to have kyrie irving giving a hand gesture to some of the fans as well. i'm just wondering what you think. >> i'm just sad that corn pop's not around to see all of this, because i think he'd like to get in the parade here, quite frankly. [laughter] look, i think some of this has to do with the internet and social media. i think we kind of get accustomedded to seeing this kind of thing and it's not that big of a deal. i personally, while i want my

kids to be very competitive and constantly trying to instill sportsmanlike conduct in them and good sportsmanship. so, for me as a parent, i don't love it because, you know, i used to look up to athletes. i think so many kids do. you take them to a game and you think you're safe, and yet you've got people throwing trash on the scene. even hoe they lost, i really don't get it. i think it's got something to do with everybody trying to up the ante. social media kind of normal eyeses things, unfortunately. >> and there also was a fight, video of the dodgers/padres game as well. i wonder if there are consequences for these unruly fans. this one looks pretty bad. >> you know, i agree with joey and lara as far as the historical aspects of this, you know, going on throughout history, but i think the motivation could be what's the punishment? oh, there's not going to be any punishment. if i think we've been so lax on punishing people that they say i can do this, i'm not going to be

behind bars. i'm going to get away with it. and i notice two of those areas involved democratic cities, and i'm just telling you it's just a lax standard, and there's no, there's no punishment. i'm not thinking it's political, i'm just saying that the motivation might be, hey, no punishment. >> those unruly democrats. another democrat is pan inning about the midterms -- pan inning. senator elizabeth warren predicts democrats are going to lose if they don't deliver on key progressive issues. >> there is so much we can do. and if we do it over the next 200 days, we're going to be in fine shape, but we need to get the work done. >> and if you don't, will you lose control of congress? enter yeah, i think we're going to be in real trouble. if we don't get out and deliver. >> yeah. even democratic strategists and advisers are telling "the new york times" it's time to head for the lifeboats as dems try to turn around president biden's sliding approval rating. [laughter] jackie, i'll come to you first on this. i think we've got some quotes here or tweets from some democratic strategists showing where they are on it. a former political adviser to bill clinton says it's going to be a terrible cycle for democrats. the former white house secretary under obama, what you're seeing is people feeling like it's time

to head for the lifeboats, like we just mentioned, rather than trying to steer the ship. so, jackie, when we talk about elizabeth warren's comments, she kind of backs it up with this if, but is if really there, or are they just in hot water? >> well, i think they're in hot water. i think we can all agree on that. it's maybe the first time i agree with elizabeth warren when she says we're in trouble. but then she puts out how she thinks president biden should try to right the ship, if you will. what she wants to do, for example, is stop the price gouging, get the ftc to investigate, for example, big oil. again, not addressing the real problem, not really understanding what the main issue is or at least willing to acknowledge it. she then talks about attacking corruption, she talks about canceling student loan debt. what she's doing is doubling down on progressive policies. she thinks if they do that, then people will vote for them. but that isn't going to solve the problems that americans are feeling right now.

that's not why they're upset. so, i mean, to me, the logic here is just, it's, it's comical. >> yeah. and, lara, when it comes to members of congress, i'm always skeptical about how hard they're actually fighting to help the country or the president as much as maybe their parochial with issues. maybe these are what gets elizabeth warren elected in massachusetts, but not what gets everyone elected across the country. when we look at the approval rating for joe biden himself. in january 2021, he had a 57% approval, 37% disapproval for his job. now he's got a 41% approval, 56% disapproval. so in just the few months that we've had in 2022, he's gone straight downhill. and there are a lot of things he's tried to do that are on that progressive agenda that either have failed or have gone into action and hurt us. so i think what elizabeth warren is saying is if he keeps doing what he's trying to do, he'll do better, but that's driving his approval rating down.
