[applause] just imagine if they predecessor came to this dinner this year, now that would really have been a real cue if that occurred. [inaudible conversations] but i'm honored to be here at such an event with so much history. already referenced, very first president to attend white house correspondents dinner was calvin coolidge in 1924 i was elected

to the united states senate i remember telling them, cal just be yourself. get up there and speak from the heart. you're going to be great kid, you're going to do well. of course jill is with me tonight jillly how are you, kid? i think doing an incredible job as first lady. the first lady to continue working full-time and she does as a professor she doesn't pay attention to polls but she did say other day instead of intriewzing myself as jill biden's husband introduce myself as her roommate. [laughter] i have many times this is my first time as president of the organizers had -- it hard made pretty hard for me tonight. although the good news is if all goes well, i have a real shout at replacing james corden --

castle you can be sure of it. republicans -- seem to support one fella. some guy named brandon he's having a good year and i'm kind of happy for him. [applause] we're in a time when what we -- so long take for granted facing gravest of threats and i'm being deadly earnest overseas for global peace and building prosperity since world war ii is

genuinely under assault and at home a poison is running through our democracy. of all, all of this taking place with this information massively on the rise, but the truth is buried by lies and lies live on as truth. what is clear and, i mean, this in the bottom of my heart that you -- free press matter more than you ever did in the last century. and i really mean it. i've always believed that good journalism holds up a mirror to ourselves to reflect on the good, the bad and the true. tonight i want to congratulate the award and scholarship winners who win on that sacred tradition and all seen courage of ukrainian people and colleagues across the world and on the ground taking their lives in their own hands.

[applause] although it is not ukraine but russia i would like to meet your mom and dad to talk about your son. we just -- saw a heartbreaking video, nine men killed reporting from kyiv. vuk by drone strike after a shopping mall attack shot in the neck, while the documenting ukrainian slain killed when russian missiles hit television tower in a residential neighborhood one journalist from radio liberty just killed days ago. so many of you telling the story and taking the photos and recording the videos of what's happening there. the unvarnished truth shown, showing -- this destruction and devastation and yes the war crimes. tonight, we also honor the legacy of two historic

reporters. and that is i'm glad you saw that tonight i didn't know you were doing that. first black women to be white house reporters who shattered convention to cover segregation nations we honor journalist killed missing and imprisoned and tortured covering war exposing corruption, and holding leaders accountable we honor members of the press. both national and local, covering the once in the century pandemic when we lost a million americans. a generation reckoning on race, threat, climate change, prefest is not the enemy to people far from it. at your best, regarding the truth. president kennedy said and i quote without debate, criticism, no administration, no country can succeed and no republican

can survive. but first amendment, grants a free press extraordinary protection. with it comes as many of you know a very heavy obligation. to seek the truth as best you can, not to imflame or entertain but to illuminate and educate. i know it is tough and it not being -- there's a pressure on you all to deliver heat instead of shed light. it is a technology changes so much. the system is changing. but it matters. no kidding, it matters, the truth matters. american democracy is not a reality show. it is not a reality show -- [applause] it's reality itself. and a reality is that we are a

great country. our future is bright. it is not guaranteed because democracy is never guaranteed. it has to be earned it has to be defended. it has to be protected. ever heard me say many times -- there's not a damn thing this country can't do when we stand united and do it together and i know we can do anything we want to do. it's right. i've been around a long time and been pointed out many times tonight. [laughter] but i give you word as biden i've never been more optimistic about america than i have today enormous opportunities but despite all of the crisis partisanship and showmanship and i know this too we are a great nation because we're basically a good people. and here in america, good

journalism, good satire, about our leaders, about our society is quintessentially an american thing. it demonstrates the power of our example. and i honest to god believe it reveals our soul, the soul of our nation. and that's what i like to toast tonight. if i may -- to the journalists and their families. to the people and elected representatives, to the united states of america! rating than the president was the press he's right about that. but the thing is he didn't do enough interspection of the press "new york times" isn't liberal enough that's his complaint about "new york times"? that you know, they don't do enough follow-up questions? how about the fact that they toasted first amendment to someone who just created an ministry of truth. they didn't mention that "the new york post" had a story censored about the president's son and he used president's son to make a joke about peter doocy i think peter doocy should have said keep my dad's name out of your mouth. [laughter] >> my favorite part also is the president, i mean, he just kept do we have pictures of him by the way he kept fixing that tie and every time he fixed the tie it got worse and worgs. abby. >> i couldn't even pay attention to what president biden was saying because i was focused on your reaction about darn bowtie. >> he could not and then hi tried to fix it and made it worse and then you can tell we were trying to figure out is someone telling him to fix it or

room full of people with so many different opinions is at a white house press briefing. but now you add alcohol into it, so jimmy have you found anybody that -- any fights breaking out because when you add alcohol to something -- and it's a bunch of different opinions you never know what's going happen. >> nice thing about people who work in journalism abby is they drink so much no kun can throw a punch they might spike the punch but not throwing it a punch people watching at home you'll never feel better about your own substance use than if you hang around journalism they're drinking like their pledging fraternity called five beta old guy in honor of joe biden. lawrence: it is so true tom i've gone to a couple of these it is so lame by the way i just wear a tux i'll never miss a opportunity to put on tux but this time we have to do lj cross country one thing i noticed that they're trying to outcompete each other there at the events

everyone thinks they're so important. >> and it is all -- they're all patting each other on the back, obviously, the joke of this whole thing is that the press is in league with the administration. they give a standing ovation to the president and they really mean it. we're supposed to have adversarial press and what we have is a bunch of people who it is all self-referential they think they're the cat's meow not doing their job and biggest story of the year were sensor and no one is mentioning. >> tom you're missing it because the future is bright this is the president explaining that he's going unify the country again -- watch. >> reality is that we are a great country. our future is bright, it's not guaranteed because democracy is never guaranteed that's the earned it has to be defended. it has to be protected. ever heard me say many time

first amendment urntiond administration that is literally forming a board to ban speech. that they don't like which is the first amendment -- joe biden is the guy that tells you you're in a no smoking section and then lights cigarette and walks away it is bananas. lawrence: so crazy and tom one of the thing i noticed that he trevor during his comedy scene was talking about cnn and fact when trump was msnbc and in office that's all they talked about was trump now biden is in office all they still talk about is trump at least they're king the. consistent. >> lampooning right and trump but we have a guy next to him that can use it. you know, it is funny talking about unity oh there's nothing we can't do for if we all work together thing is country is together most of the country doesn't like biden but the press is supposed to be adversarial and not supposed to work together that's idea of a press.

is they're not supposed to work together with the president to get things done. this was to ask tough questions. lawrence: so true. abby -- last thoughts -- do you think that trevor did a good job do you think the president did a good job you're balanced on how you see things. but one of the thingings that i notice there is trevor kind of -- said that everything was going welt in the country i don't think americans are sell like this? >> he made a joke about president biden you know people look at it oh they're increasing the gas prices and the food prices and -- all of that rent that was a funny joke but yeah qhing you're in trevor noah position i do think that the hard position to be in because you have to make sure that you're a little bit even and he leaned a certain way but you can only applaud him for doing that. i'm so confused about this event because it is about democracy and pete davidson is there with kim kardashian -- >> so -- >> we have to talk about the
