8:00 am
>> six again not 15, 19, 70, 61, 20. the maeg yeah is 6. >> only would be problem the 6 was a 9. it happens. >> julie: i would be so mad if i thought i had won millions of dollars. >> bill: hang onto your ticket. they'll do a redo later in the week. >> julie: it is why i don't buy lottery. >> bill: see you tomorrow. bye-bye. >> harris: fox news alert. millions of parents depend on baby formula every day. you know here on the "focus" we have been putting a spotlight on this. a main manufacturer off line as the nation waits for the white house to possibly use its bully pulpit to make a difference. they haven't yet. a giggle from the lectern at the white house yesterday during the press briefing from the new press secretary but no definitive action yet. republicans are on capitol hill today, though, about to take
8:01 am
out their mega phone to make sure americans know they are on it. i'm harris faulkner and you are in "the faulkner focus". more than two dozen states now are reporting baby formula shortages. five states out of stock with levels as high as 50% of what they normally have gone from store shelves. some parents forced to drive hours just to find a store with something that they can buy for their baby. some calling families and other states to see if they can maybe ship smriets. others are watering down formula or rationing it. after talking with doctors, this would not be preferred in any event because they need the nutrients, the little ones. but that's what this has come to in some areas. the driving force behind it, a closed michigan plant that may not have formula back on store shelves until mid-summer.
8:02 am
they say they will try to begin producing again in a few weeks but it will take a while to get all of that product to where people can actually buy it. they've been shut down by the fda and parents just can't hide their frustration. >> it is disgraceful. absolutely embarrassing a and joe biden is not fooling anyone but he is blaming everyone. >> there are moms who will go to sleep tonight who will not be able to get formula for their children. >> this isn't just food or a snack. babies need formula that helps them thrive and growth and development. they need the critical nutrients for nourishment for their body. >> harris: it's for the baby's brain, the nutrients. the white house is insisting fixing this is a top priority. but incoming white house press
8:03 am
secretary sean pierre, here she is. >> this is an urgent issue the fda and the white house are working 24/7 to address. at the white house i don't know. i will get you a person who is running point. >> harris: it's a giggle when you ask who is running point. joining the "focus" now republican senator josh hawley of missouri, a member of the senate judiciary, homeland and armed services committee. great to have you today. this is not something that typically we would be focused on feeding our babies in this country. it's the american way to bring in life and be able to support it. what has gone wrong >> one of the things i would like to know why did the biden administration close down the plant in february and why is it still closed? what are the issues and why are we in may the plant is still offline and they won't tell us why or when it is coming back online. what is the fda doing with its time?
8:04 am
there is no explanation for this. missouri, my state, is one of the states in the country that is over 50% out of stock. this is not acceptable. it isn't sustainable. i don't know what the administration is doing and why they don't have urgency about it. they seem to be more focused on other things but not this. not the american people and the needs of our children. something has to happen quick here. >> harris: i just said moments ago republicans are about to take out the mega phone and they are. i don't know why the white house would need to be shouted at, though. some of them have children. it baffles the mind. this has loosely some effect on our kids. the walt disney company could lose its copyright to mickey mouse if you, senator, have your way. you've written the age of republican hand-outs to big business is over. and you've proposed legislation this week that would limit disney's copyright protection
8:05 am
for the iconic cartoon to 56 years. proposed measure comes week after governor ron desantis signed into law that will strip disney of its self-governing status over its theme parks and resorts around orlando, florida. disney executives made no mention of this drama in florida yesterday as they were touting strong results on an earnings call. senator hawley, what is the endgame here? >> the endgame is to stop federal hand-outs to woke corporations like disney. why should the multi-billion dollar corporations keep getting taxpayer money in order to intervene in political issues in a way that hurts american families, that goes against the wishes of american voters and american taxpayers. listen, if disney wants to take a political view and say they aren't in favor of parental rights, fine. why should they get federal government help do so? my bill would stop a stop to the federal hand-outs.
8:06 am
>> harris: you set us up for the breaking news and capitol hill is focused. senator hawley, thank you on the baby formula shortage on one side of the aisle and it is getting loud. let's watch the live republicans in the house baby formula shortage they are focused. >> missouri is just one of six states in america that has more than half of its baby formula out of stock. business and retailers are rationing supplies and you can see this is from a local store limiting the amount of formula that a customer can buy. the st. louis crisis nursey, amazing organization dedicated to supporting at-risk children has been pleading for donations of formula so they don't have to turn away families in need since the end of february. >> this is absolutely unconscionable. as a mother of three and a
8:07 am
proud grandmother of two and another sweet baby on the way it is terrifying to think of the desperation that parents in my district are feeling when they can't provide the basic t their children. i've heard stories of moms firsthand my own daughter-in-law bartering for baby formula on facebook, pregnant women are asking if they should start stockpiling. they're anxious during a time of high stress and anxiety. they should never be happening. due to the blatant incompetence of this white house and the democrats who haven't even scheduled a hearing until the end of may. this has been weeks and weeks since the end of february. i'll fight for these mothers and fathers facing challenges and my republican colleagues that stand with me today and the rest of our conference will
8:08 am
do everything in their power, in our power, to get the biden administration to take action to fix this life threatening crisis now. i thank you. i hand the podium over to the chairman of the energy and commerce committee, wife and mother herself, my good friend kathy mcmorris rodgers. >> in washington state, moms, support groups, nurses have been telling me it's the biggest crisis they've faced as they face the shortage of baby formula. families are turning to the internet because they are so desperate. it is extremely dangerous. you think about moms going to the grocery store and having an empty shelf. in some cases they are driving for hours in order to get the baby formula that they need and they certainly don't need to be facing empty shelves. we shouldn't be rationing
8:09 am
formula to keep their babies fed and some families rely upon specific formula. i talked to one mom who has a baby with allergies and it's extremely difficult. she feels like she is playing russian roulette as she goes to the store. president biden and the fda must do more. this is a matter of life or death. what will it take for the biden administration to reverse its inflation, supply chain and energy crises that are making the shortage worse? on the energy and commerce committee as well as with my colleagues in the conference, we are asking the questions, we've been raising the alarm to president biden for months. we've been seeing the empty shelves and seeing the rising costs on families. we also have concerns about the abbott recall and how it is impacting shortages. on behalf of every parent and caregiver who is unsure as to whether they will be able to feed their children, we need
8:10 am
answers and we need accountability. i want to thank our conference chair and everyone here representing parents and grand parents. i'm a mom of three kids. we will not stop until this shortage is fixed. with that i'm proud to introduce patrick mchenry, a long time leader for parents and grandparents and our families here on capitol hill. >> harris: we wanted to bring you some of that because as you can see they have a long list of people who are ready to step up to the microphone and talk. house republicans including leaders in the house as you see there. kathy mcmorris rodgers said parents in her state are facing the worst crisis that she has ever heard from them about in her years in politics and, of course, we had on moments ago from missouri josh hawley, the senator saying his state is one
8:11 am
of the five that are below 50% levels of having anything on the shelves. he said it has gotten to the point where it is down right frightening. people will start to ration and that can be medically ill-advised to put extra water in the formula to stretch it out for particularly very young infants. we'll move on from this. we are reaching out again "the faulkner focus" team right now to see if there is anything more that the abbott corporation would like to say. their statement said in two weeks they will be producing again but it would be mid-summer before you would see stuff back on the shelves to alleviate the shortages we're seeing. the call to the white house now you just heard from mcmorris rodgers is to get involved. layering this with the inflation and the other economic burdens that are on americans right now because of biden administration policies is not acceptable. and so they want to find out why did the fda pull and not
8:12 am
have a backup plan when they knocked abbott off line? and they had a recall. so we knew there were problems months ago. what was plan b? white house, we'll see if they respond. let's move on. covid cases are going up as the president commemorates the 1 million americans who lost their lives during the pandemic. the flag at the white house right now at half staff in their memory and honor. but it looks like americans really are far less worried about contracting and becoming very ill from covid. plus republicans again calling out attorney general merrick garland. >> what he said in the committee was a direct contradiction of the facts we know because of this brave whistleblower. when you have seen the government move that fast? because they were going after people. >> harris: republican lawmakers say they have evidence now the f.b.i. did, in fact, target

>> harris: today we mark a tragic milestone. 1 million covid deaths each irreplaceable losses. each leaving behind a family, a community, forever changed because of this pandemic. >> harris: president biden honoring one million americans who have lost their lives during the covid-19 pandemic. americans are expressing they are far less worried than ever
8:19 am
about covid despite rising cases right now in some parts of the world and country. jacqui heinrich is live at the white house with details on this day for the president. >> the president ordered flags lowered to half staff through monday and urged world leaders not to become complacent in fighting covid-19. this as the country marks a million covid deaths at home and 6.2 million around the world. as the white house continues to push congress for more covid funding saying the u.s. will left be unprepared if new treatments and vaccines get snapped up by other countries polls are showing covid is just not a top concern for voters anymore. fewer than 1 in 3 adults say they're very or somewhat worried about geting covid. nearly 2/3 of americans say the pandemic is getting better. the administration's own behavior reflects that somewhat. covid response team hasn't held a briefing in more than five weeks. they aren't hosting the
8:20 am
president not only to pressure u.s. lawmakers but facilitate vaccinations overseas. >> president biden: an action to provide emergency covid-19 funding that is vital to protect americans, to make sure that we maintain our supplies of covid-19 tests, treatments and vaccines including next generation vaccines that are being developed. >> according to government data, more than 680 million donated vaccines are set to expire because lack of logistical support in other countries. the poorer countries not claiming the doses because they don't have refrigeration for them or personnel to distribute the shots. critics say sending more vaccine to counter vaccine hesitancy or support to distribute them will do no good and congress has held up covid
8:21 am
funding due to title 42 which is administration is lifting in under two weeks from now triggering a massive surge of migration at the border. this faltering resolve to get more covid funding at home could dampen the president's ability to drum up new pledges from other countries. >> harris: plus a new revelation of reporting that they went through the epa with $7 million of spending to replace diesel school buses with electric ones. they spent some of the covid money to do that. so the question is do they have such a surplus where we really didn't need all of that covid money then making as you said, the conversation that they have now even more complicated for the president to get more. jackie, thank you very much. jason rantz host of the jason rantz show on talk radio in seattle in focus now. you just heard me giving one example of the pushback on the president for more money for
8:22 am
covid relief. their own behaviors don't suggest that we need it. >> it doesn't at all. they keep asking for more and more and more and they aren't spending it directly on covid relief. i remember when we spent all this money for schools that didn't actually go towards helping students in classrooms as it related to the impact of covid. there is a concern among the american people at a time when inflation is through the roof and you're saying give us more money. at some point especially on covid are going to say maybe enough is enough. you can't keep going down this road pretending that covid exactly is the same now as it was two years ago. it very clearly isn't and the polls are reflecting that. >> harris: you know what boggles the mind.
8:23 am
the crisis at the border, the baby formula situation and a pew research poll finds attitudes on masking have changed a lot in six months. 63% of people say it doesn't bother them much when others around them don't wear a mask. that's up from 27% in november. just 14 say it bothers them a lot down from 49%. and then you have the overall response from people, more than 50% say they are just not as worried about contracting covid and becoming very ill. >> they shouldn't be as worried now. we have different therapeutics and a vaccine. the data does not suggest you can't spread covid when you are vaccinated it suggests it protects you from going to the hospital or dying. so we're in this world where we're now treating it like the flu or mostly like the flu and the data on covid seems to back up that exact suggestion. now i do think the polls are a
8:24 am
better reflection of where the american people are than where the biden administration is. >> harris: why do you think that is? >> i think the biden administration is trying to use covid still or anything to distract from what is actually happening in this country. a lot of what they've been doing over the last couple years has specifically to do with their ideology and we've talked about this on the crime issue, criminal justice reform. gender identity in the classroom is where their focus is and that's not where the american people want it to go. the biden administration is trying yet again to bring something up that will distract from the key issues that we care about, key issues that are going to lead to this political massacre in the mid-terms. >> harris: let me bring up another key issue for people. we're often pressed to figure out why people have lost their trust in government. check this out. two house republicans say they
8:25 am
have evidence, i like to call it receipts. the f.b.i. actually did target parents who protested covid and crt policies at schools despite attorney general merrick garland telling congress this in october of 2021. >> i can't imagine any circumstance in which the patriot act would be used in the circumstances of parents complaining about their children nor can i imagine a circumstance where they would be labeled as domestic terrorism. >> harris: let's challenge the a.g. to use his imagination and the facts. jim jordan here. >> he said he wasn't use counter terrorism resources to go after moms and dads and would not do that. that's looks exactly what they did. here comes the f.b.i. >> harris: jason. >> this is an administration
8:26 am
that used parents as irritants. they are the ones getting in the way of the democrat agenda and right now when it comes to children it is not about their well-being. i think very clearly as we look at the baby formula crisis to frankly the support of abortion up to nine months into a pregnancy they aren't caring about the well-being of children. they are caring about turning them into politicians, to activists who will use the lens that progressives see this country through to make institutionalized changes. parents are the ones who over and over again whether it's on having masks in schools or closing schools down completely or the gender identity and the crt lesson plans. parents are stepping up and it gets in the way of the agenda of the democratic party and biden administration. i hope no one is surprised they lied about this and this is how they treated parents but i do hope they take this as alarming enough to start to organize better and take control back of
8:27 am
school boards and districts and ultimately the congress and then the white house. >> harris: when it involves an investigation and the f.b.i., we don't see what they see on capitol hill. eventually we will. so what that evidence looks like is apparently enough to get them to say, as you did, somebody lied at the very top. fingers are pointing at the attorney general merrick garland. we'll cover it as it unfolds. good to have you in "focus." president biden honing his attacks against the all tra maga republicans as he likes to refer to them now as primary season kicks into high gear. you know what? there is also some backlash growing over this tense exchange. >> i think framing it in the context of labor force participation is -- it feels callous to me.
8:28 am
>> in many cases abortions of teenage women, particularly low income and often black, who aren't in the position to be able to care for children. >> harris: of course, we know senator scott read her like a book. wow. critics tearing into treasury secretary yellen after claiming abortion has damaging effects on the economy. power panel next.
8:29 am
riders! let your queries be known. uh, how come we don't call ourselves bikers anymore? i mean, "riders" is cool, but "bikers"...is really cool. -seriously? -denied. can we go back to meeting at the rec center? the commute here is brutal. denied. how do we feel about getting a quote to see if we can save with america's number one motorcycle insurer? should flo stop asking the same question every time? -approved! -[ altered voice ] denied! psoriasis really messes with you. try. hope. fail. no one should suffer like that. i started cosentyx®. five years clear. real people with psoriasis look and feel better with cosentyx. don't use if you're allergic to cosentyx. before starting get checked for tuberculosis. an increased risk of infection, some serious and a lowered ability to fight them may occur. tell your doctor about an infection or symptoms or if you had a vaccine or plan to. tell your doctor if your crohn's disease symptoms develop or worsen. serious allergic reaction may occur. best move i've ever made.
8:33 am
8:34 am
callous to me. >> there is a spillover into labor force participation in many cases abortions are of teenage women, particularly low income and often black, who aren't in a position to be able to care for children. >> i will simply say as a guy raised by a black woman in abject poverty i'm thankful to be here as a united states senator. >> harris: it pops the mind she would actually argue with him. would want to debate the senator as if she speaks for him. an ocean of reaction to those moving words that we just saw from senator tim scott about his background and how he grew up after hearing what secretary yellen had to say this week. social media exploded with praise for senator scott and criticism for yellen. one user said the exchange cut
8:35 am
to the heart of democrats' support for abortion and exposed the disgusting reality of how they view their fellow americans' worth and ability. another with nothing better than a multi-millionaire old white woman lecturing a black man how his mother was a loser because she let him be born. senator roy blunt weighed in this way. >> it's really unfortunate to see this apparently is the company line. everything has economic impact, everything is one of the reasons that the economy is not flourishing like it should or won't flourish in the future. this is not the job of the secretary of the treasury. she has plenty of other things to spend her time on. >> harris: wow. a new op-ed entitled abortion, like slavery, harms the economy despite the claims of janet yellen. another with the headline the treasury secretary ignores the
8:36 am
value of lost human capital. power panel now. matt gorman, communications director, leslie marshall, fox news contributor. this is stuff because when you hear senator scott, what happens in your mind, matt? what was your reaction to that? >> i thought janet yellen's comments were ghoulish and i think liberals love to throw around the term white privilege. if anything it fits like this. janet yellen is a white woman worth $20 million taught went to brown and yale and taught at harvard. secretary of the treasury and lecturing tim scott what it means to grow up poor. if anything is white privilege it's that. abortion among the democrats have gone from safe, legal and rare to abortion is an economic driver which is insane. >> harris: leslie, take me inside your party. you are so wonderful at this because you really do see it so
8:37 am
transparently. why didn't it happen that roe v. wade was codified when democrats had the white house and both chambers on capitol hill under barack obama? if it is important enough to protest in the streets right now, when democrats were fully in power, why didn't they take care of that as their priority? >> you know, if i could answer that it would be president marshall in the white house and not president biden. honestly i really don't know. i want to push back a tiny bit. when i saw the exchange first of all abortion is a very emotionally charged issue. it is a very personal and private in my opinion decision. and when you have the secretary of the treasury answering questions, i didn't feel that secretary yellen was trying to discount people in poverty. i think she was doing her job in the sense of numbers. that's her job. it's about numbers and finance
8:38 am
and the economy and how anything, any legislation, any decision politically would affect that. that's what i thought she was answering. senator scott, what he said was very moving and was very emotional but if we do look at the numbers and we do look at how this does impact. this is not just among african-americans and not always just amongst lower income. certainly but how would it affect social programs like welfare, healthcare system, education system. i didn't take it as some people -- i didn't think she was attacking senator scott and his mother's choice to have him. >> harris: you are entitled to your opinion. she gave us hers. you don't have to go to work as the world's living heart donor which is what she chose to do on that day. gas prices hitting a record high for the third day in a row. the average price for a gallon now $4.41. by the time we get to friday on this trend it will make
8:39 am
sunday's price look much cheaper. every day it goes up at this point. we break a record every day. up 17 cents from a week ago, $2 from a year ago and americans are struggling, we know that. according to a new monmouth poll more than 50% of people say it is very or somewhat difficult to fill up their cars. in the face of those rising prices for gasoline the biden administration canceled one of the most high profile oil and gas lease sales pending now. the department of the interior halted the potential to drill from 1 million acres in cook inlet in alaska along with two lease sales in the gulf of mexico. we're working counter productively now to get the price of gas to come down if we don't move faster and more toward being able to sustain ourselves. >> that's just the key word here, these leases people want to say climate change. two reasons the leases were pulled. one no oil company had interest
8:40 am
in drilling there and two, there was a legal battle going on. what the experts are saying is it would take decades for even if they did drill to impact gas prices and they wouldn't be drilling just because you have the lease it would be sitting there because of the legal problems and oil companies for lack of interest in that lease and land. >> harris: matt. >> this is on top of anwar and keystone pipeline that had longer lead times but we haven't hit memorial day >> harris: you saw air fairs are going up 18% since last month. people will start to feel it. school is out and you have people wanting to hit the road. i would love to revisit the yellen remarks with you at some point, leslie. because it is important to talk about those souls who are lost who don't come into the economy. that's been part of the republican argument and next
8:41 am
time we'll make more time for it. authorities declare the state of emergency in southern california where a wildfire is barreling into neighborhoods overlooking the pacific ocean destroying homes in its path and democrats clapping back at house republicans trying to stop the biden administration's new disinformation governance board. the battle over who decides what is truth and what they prefer we believe? u put it all on the line. u do it all. so u bring ubrelvy. it can quickly stop migraine in its tracks within 2 hours... without worrying if it's too late or where you are. unlike older medicines, ubrelvy is a pill that directly blocks a protein believed to be a cause of migraine. do not take with strong cyp3a4 inhibitors. most common side effects were nausea and tiredness. migraine pain relief starts with u. learn how abbvie can help you save. ask about ubrelvy, the anytime, anywhere migraine medicine. veteran homeowners. ask about ubrelvy, the anytime, skyrocketing home prices are breaking records.

>> harris: a fast moving wind drive wildfire destroying up to 20 homes in coastal california. this neighborhood, look at it. these houses are so big they look like malls, a heavily populated area. people are in great danger here. william la jeunesse is live for us in laguna niguel and so far people were able to get out but a lot of people live there. >> the sheriff evacuated early on. we're in the backyard of what was a $10 million house now smoldering garbage really. this was the barbecue area here. the fireplace, pool there. this was an expensive but
8:47 am
typical california subdivision, a new one. that's what made it unusual. i want to show you the topography. that's what made this difference. it was a nice day, 60 degrees, 53% humidity. no eaves and yet this is the problem, right? we're at the top of a canyon. this is the ridge line. the fire raced up the hill. embers came over the edge here into this neighborhood. if you show off to the left you can see some of the other houses that have been destroyed. the embers shooting over the top, 30 mile-per-hour winds which is not actually all that much. one open window, attic vent, boom, it will be gone. we talked to the fire chief yesterday and this is what he had to say. they could not stop the destruction. >> fires are taking off and running on us. they're burning very quickly. not necessarily, you know, burning thousands and thousands of acres, but enough that it is burning quickly and into the
8:48 am
structures and unfortunately i believe this is what we'll be experiencing over the next several months and years. >> they had plenty of air support yesterday as they do today. no other fires in california. so you had hand crews, tankers and almost every driveway and helicopters and tankers, you name it and it wasn't able to stop the fire, as he said fire season in california is year round. this is the second week in may with almost ideal conditions. still you have a fire that took about 24 homes. harris. >> harris: all right. thank you very much. this breaking news. where we started this hour and we wondered maybe the white house is paying attention. they were. so president biden now is set to speak with retailers and infant formula manufacturers today. they say the time is to be determined and we won't get to see it. it will be a virtual event not made public live. but we do anticipate that it will make some news and we'll bring it to you as it happens.
8:49 am
the president is finally getting involved in what the press secretary chuckled at yesterday. is there anybody in the white house who is focused on this? i'll have to ask, she said. let's move on. president biden going hard with the new white house mid-term strategy and a phrase he likes. ultra-maga. and getting the former president in on his act. getting a lot of attention. >> president biden: under my predecessor the great maga king, the deficit increased every single year he was president. how quickly we forget people were hurt and what did the maga crowd want to do? forget it. i never expected the ultra-maga republicans who seem to control the republican party now, to have been able to control the
8:50 am
republican party. this maga crowd is really the most extreme political organization that existed in american history. >> harris: this is the same president who promised to be a great unifyer for america. rather than running from the maga label, though, republicans are saying embrace it. >> ultra-maga. >> i'm ultra-maga and proud of it. >> harris: jimmie. >> great to see you, harris. i should warn you. this drives me crazy and i'm cranky because i haven't had my morning whiskey. you have to work with me here. biden doesn't understand that people have moved beyond political infighting at this point. yes, democrats and republicans don't like each other. when you can't afford a gallon of gas or no baby formula for your kid yelling maga doesn't work anymore. there was a time it was fashionable and go a long way. this is him having bad political instincts and being
8:51 am
out of touch with the time. you watch the rebrand that wreaks of desperation. ultra-maga, extreme maga. i've got it. we'll yell maga until we get votes. they are going to get the core votes. when you are polling around 38%ist is not because republicans don't like you, it is because everyone thinks you are mismanaging the country and maga won't do it anymore. >> harris: breaking it real. a monmouth poll released minutes ago shows republicans still hold the lead in the generic ballot. 48% of voters say they would rather vote for a republican or leaning toward the gop overall. 44% say they are or will likely vote for democrats. so this is the gap is widening now. it is no longer a tie. it is outside of the statistical -- it is getting worse for democrats.
8:52 am
>> the reason why is they have focused constantly on perception over reality. again and again and again. every time we have problem it starts out with them saying there isn't one. border isn't a problem and inflation isn't a problem. when they're forced to admit it, it's not here for long and now it's maga. that's what goes on. any issue you want to throw at me. it isn't a problem until it's a problem until it's maga's fault. when in doubt, trump it out. >> harris: why call the former president a king, the ultra-maga king. means he actually has his base, right? biden doesn't. we know that. we know that by looking at the polling. you can't have 66% of americans against you on the topic of economy if you've got your base engaged. let me get to this.
8:53 am
house democrats blocking republicans from moving forward with a bill to defund the biden administration's controversial disinformation governance board where they want to tell us what the truth is. republicans refuse to be silent on this. >> the president's ministry of truth is just an unamerican abuse of power. we already know what they will do with that control. they will manipulate the facts and discredit the truth when it is inconvenient for their narrative. >> they told us the dossier was real and democrats said in 2020 that rioters and looters were peaceful. 54 government officials said the hunter biden wasn't true. what if it goes against his far left soviet style radical ideology? >> harris: the white house continues to defend the board and its efforts to tackle disinformation. >> the mandate is not to
