residents to avoid the area. i will go to the boy in the newsroom. >> horrible scene in buffalo new york, police on scene, the only good news to report as the suspect is in custody, multiple people have been hit by gunshots. you mentioned this came in into our newsroom about 3:00 p.m., half an hour after that so in the past half hour buffalo police tweeting this saying there on scene of a mass shooting on jefferson avenue. police say multiple people struck by gunfire, the shooter is in custody. everybody is urged to avoid the area, that still the case. let's show you a map of where the supermarket is located. i can tell you about a block south of here is the nearest fire department and we seen horrible videos on twitter where the suspect appears to be

dressed in camouflage, multiple people are down in the street, police and firefighters are on scene, firefighters are tending to one person on the ground. i can tell you a buffalo hospital, the general medical center 2 miles away from this, a horrible scene, reactions pouring in including kathy hochul, she tweeted she's closely monitoring the shooting in buffalo and out of the state offered assistance to local officials, the same message from the governor buffalo, please avoid the area and law enforcement and local officials. this is all very new information, we are digging to learn the newest and as soon as we get updates on how the victims are doing or if there are any debts, anything related to this, we will let you know and come right back on air. eric: we will get back to you as soon as that happens.

arthel: thank you very much, ted williams joins us, fox news contributor and former d.c. homicide detective, we heard nate tell us the shooter is in custody but still heavy police presence on scene. what are police doing in the aftermath? >> this is a horrific scene. what they have done is put up crime scene tape, it's a crime scene now. it's my understanding they have a person of interest, the shooter in custody, a person in military draw, it's believed this person may very well have a social media site while he was carrying out this horrific act in buffalo at the food store. i know exactly where it is, it's a store on any given weekend,

the citizens of buffalo go shop at. right now they are trying to learn as much as they can about the person they have in custody. arthel: you are right, it's a saturday afternoon, the store has to be crowded. according to the news agency, we have not confirmed yet but the suspect opened fire while live streaming on a platform called twitch and he posted on line manifesto describing himself as a white supremacist. what does that say to you? details are scarce, we have not confirmed this ourselves but what does this say to you? >> it says he was clearly planned a mass shooting. this person, if we believe he lifestream, if we believe he had a manifesto, that tells us he

target that store to carry out this mass shooting at that location. it will be interesting to see what he put in the manifesto and i'm sure clearly that is part of the investigation. arthel: of course law enforcement cannot be everywhere at all times but if he did post a manifesto and they put stuff online all the time, horrible things, how do police know which posting could become a threat to act on their feelings? how do you even know that? >> sadly it's like a needle in the haystack. there is no way police can no all, even with advanced notice, there are numerous posts on the internet where individuals make posts but don't carry out the

action taken. law enforcement clearly would like to be proactive but in these circumstances, just having to be reactive and reacting to what's taking place in buffalo, new york at a food store. arthel: we are looking at live pictures and the entire parking lot is cordoned off, if you know the area, 1200 block of jefferson avenue, that's the block we are talking about. details are scarce but i'll ask anyway because you know our intelligence agencies have said white supremacy is on the rise. looking at the corner of jefferson and riley street, white supremacy is on the rise, a serious threat to our nation. we don't know if this guy is

associated with a white supremacist group, the news agency he posted online, a manifesto describing himself as such the for the psaki of this conversation, you have intel agencies saying white supremacy is on the rise and some people don't want to believe that. where does that leave us as a nation in terms of protection for citizens who could be targets with these warped thoughts? >> this should become an eye opener. white supremacy and other hate groups are clearly on the rise and we have internal intelligence groups and law enforcement looking out for these groups and what they may or may not be doing. we also need citizens out there to be vigilant and when they

hear something, they need to immediately reported to the authorities. we are going to learn a lot about the individual taken into custody and it's out there that he's a white supremacy, we really don't know but we do know white supremacy is on the rise, hate groups are in america on the rise and law enforcement are on the radar but we need citizens to help law enforcement. arthel: we are looking at pictures while you and i are talking, certainly the store is not exclusive to people of color but looking at the pictures it seems to be a place where a lot of people of color do shop so back to this idea, law enforcement should be on the lookout as well as citizens but i want to ask you about

lawmakers, we can't do anything without proper laws. i'll go there with you, how can our lawmakers help us as americans to try to ward off the could be a resurgent, something so heinous? >> the unfortunate thing in america, we have divided camps. some say we need to come together for the common good of various his citizens in various communities. the communities in which you are talking about in buffalo area is an area that needs more of a black occupation. what we need law enforcement, law enforcers to do meaning legislatures, we need them to step up to the plate. we need them to do something, to be proactive. law enforcement officers are tired of being reactive, meaning they act out. a lot of these legislatures, if they enact certain laws can help law enforcement, and that is
