>> todd: president biden announcing -- concerns of possible u.s. recession as americans struggle with the price of gas, food and of course, that baby formula shortage. you are watching "fox and friends first," i'm todd piro. >> griff: i'm griff jenkins, in for carley shimkus. the president says the u.s. will respond militarily if china
2:01 am
attempts to take taiwan by force. doug luzader has details. hi, doug. >> doug: this emerging trade pact is called the framework for prosperity, but other headlines are emerging and the white house had to clarify a surprising comment the president made about taiwan. >> you didn't want to get involved in the ukraine conflict militarily for obvious reasons, are you willing to get involved militarily for taiwan, if it comes to that? >> yes, that is the commitment we made. >> doug: that sounds like a major change in policy for the u.s. the white house very quickly issued this statement denying there was any policy change. the president said our policy has not changed and reiterated our one china policy and
2:02 am
commitment to peace and stability across the taiwan strait to provide taiwan with military means to defend itself. the president made news speaking about the u.s. economy, no longer talk about transitory challenge. >> president biden: our gdp will grow faster than china's for the first time in 40 years. does that mean we don't have problems? we do. when it comes to gas prices, we're going through incredible transition that is taking place and god willing, when it is over, we'll be stronger and the world will be stronger and less reliant on fossil fuel when it is over. it will take time. >> is a recession in the united states inevitable? >> no. >> not inevitable, despite prediction of economists and business leaders and this emerging trade pact is limited
2:03 am
in scope and does include 13 countries, accounting for 40% of the world's gdp. back to you. >> todd: thank you. griff, my whole takeaway from this press conference and press availability from this morning, this white house, president biden, has no sense of urgency that the world economy and the american economy is in the tank. specifically he mentioned, i don't think we'll be in a recession, yet people who are experts, the economists and people who know, say we are headed that way if we do not change course immediately. he seems to be focused on all the wrong things. we need to solve problems immediately in front of us, lower gas prices and lower inflation. we can't be worried 100% about climate change. we can't be worried about taxing the rich. we need to focus on things
2:04 am
immediately in front of us and to hear this white house, not only president biden today, brian diese say, we're the best in the world right now. when you are the best of the worst, that doesn't do anything for the family struggling to get by right now, trying to make ends meet. it is not what they want to hear, they want results and change. >> griff: they will feel that pain at memorial day weekend when they go to the grocery store. let's not forget, it has been 100 days since president biden sat down for an actual interview and instead does limited press conference avails where he makes comments leaving everyone wondering what plan he has to get us out of this recession and now we need to have him sit down and clarify what he meant when he said that the u.s. will
2:05 am
militarily intervene if china invades taiwan. that is significant departure. we do not have official diplomatic relations with taiwan. we recognize beijing, the one china policy, which that statement the white house put out trying to clean up on aisle nine, however, to suggest we would militarily intervene is departure from what we have said when we defended taiwan right to defend itself if invaded. joe biden was the candidate running for president saying he had all the international relations to stabilize the world. we're seeing anything, but that, right now with a lot of questions. chinese officials are starting to wake up and blast the comments, we'll see where it goes. it is early, the sun hasn't even gone up and the white house having to do double time to calm nerves and china and what you
2:06 am
are going to see, i think, is the president having to walk it further back and whatever next remarks in front of the press here in japan in the next 24 hours, but one thing for sure, there is inconsistency with his position and the fact he said the burden to protect taiwan was made even stronger after russia's invasion of ukraine led many to wonder if china is ramping up provocation. we've seen in recent weeks chinese exercise in the south china sea, seen chinese aircraft buzzing taiwan and would appear that president biden is taking the bait, which is not something we expected from the guy billed to be the international relations boss. >> todd: in 45 minutes we'll speak with michael waltz, congressman and former green
2:07 am
beret, curious to get his take. other news, white house scrambling to address the baby formula crisis. the president says a second shipment of baby formula will be on its way to the u.s. from overseas, all part of operation fly formula. the first shipment arriving in indianapolis yesterday. the biden administration warning none will end up on store shelves, the hypo allergenic formula will be used for children who cannot process formula with cow's milk. the economy is a top concern, but it doesn't seem like democrats are getting the memo. >> we feel very good about where the united states is. >> we rescued the country. >> by any metric with the exception of recession, we have moved forward. >> todd: joe concha will react to that coming up.

>> we feel very good about where the united states is. >> president biden has been decisive with his leadership, beginning with the american rescue plan. >> this country has moved forward. >> todd: democrats are applauding president biden's
2:12 am
leadership despite his suffering poll numbers. over half of americans say his policies are hurting the economy. >> joe, the democrats we just heard wildly out of touch and just moments ago we heard the president, joe biden talking about, i don't think we're going to have a recession, we're number one in the world. everything is more or less fine. is reporting today going to be as out of touch as it has been all along, not in touch with what the average american is feeling? >> joe: todd, i love this. every metric, but inflation. what about the supply chain crisis that has millions of moms and dads struggling to find baby formula? what about skyrocketing crime. the catastrophe at the border? those are huge issues right now. if inflation quadrupled under the previous president, i'm pretty sure we would be seeing
2:13 am
the coverage being a little different and probably profoundly hostile, that is where we are at this point in terms of media. not everybody completely, but at the same time, let's face it, things are not going well now. one poll out showed nearly 8 in 10 americans say the country is going in the wrong direction. a third of democrats think the country is going in the right direction. this could be spun issue the american people know what they are feeling and seeing and they don't like it, todd. >> todd: i mentioned in the opening block, it's been 100 days since president biden did an at-length interview. there are many outlets the president could choose for a friendlier interview than if he would come on with me and todd or carley, but assuming he doesn't do that, if he sat down with someone to unpack some
2:14 am
questions he's raising from the recession to his position on taiwan, do you think it would help? >> joe: i don't know. it's a great question, to be honest with you. when you don't do an interview in 102 days, that shows his handlers are petified and will say things like he just said about defending taiwan. that requires clean up on aisle five. griff, it is election year and democrats are facing a red tsunami, you would think the commander-in-chief would be sat down somewhere, anywhere, maybe somewhere friendly that could give him a platform, right. say what you will about donald trump as far as the way his presidency had gone, at least he never ran from the press and always did interviews and would
2:15 am
do press conferences sometimes for 90 minutes, two hours. you get the feeling the president's handlers think it will do more harm than depend and that is scary when you consider this is the leader of this country, he should face questions and they don't want to put him out there. >> griff: i remember 30-minute press conferences donald trump would hold at departure of marine one. not the case with joe biden. joe concha, thanks for kicking things off with us. joe, see you soon. >> joe: thanks, griff. surf's up. >> griff: students are learning aoc's instead of abc's, thanks to a book talking about socialism and slams religion. >> todd: an outraged parent joins us next.

2:20 am
>> griff: parents are outraged over a book that slams mitch mcconnel joining me is a mother of four and parent's rights advocate running for congress in new york. good morning, thank you for taking time. what is this children's book all about? >> you know, i'll tell you that in addition to this book being explicitly political in way most parents don't want in their kid's classroom, the problem going on with curriculum and what is being taught in the schools is really runs deeper than any one particular book. i think parents are concerned about the way in which teachers are talking to kids, which is harder to follow and track, i hear from a lot of parents that i've personally observed, kids
2:21 am
use language like "sex assigned at birth," that is not assigned. sex is observed. i knew i had a baby boy when i gave birth to my son, not because the doctor assigned him boy, but because he was a boy. parents are concerned about fundamental things being undermined and taught in schools that they don't agree with. >> griff: right. the brooklyn author, anastasia higginbotham defends her book. here is what she had to say. listen. >> the child wants to know if mitch mcconnell is invited to love and be love considering all the harm he is causing. >> griff: the child is gay, although he is not out, and he's struggling go through life. but why attack senate minority leader mitch mcconnell? >> my kid's classroom, i have
2:22 am
children in high school, middle school and elementary school, we have democratic and republican parents, nonpolitical parents who are perfectly capable of going to a pta meeting together and talking about what you should talk about, like raising money to create a chess program or doing things important for your kid's school, it shouldn't be explicitly political, certainly not for 10 year olds. it is sexual and political content is inappropriate. >> griff: thank you for taking time. you have four children in new york city public schools, thank you for sharing your thoughts. todd. >> todd: griff, a 16 year old released without charges after allegedly shooting an nypd officer and pro-police advocates say the judge who let him walk is pushing her own agenda from the bench.
2:23 am
berl /* >> you have lenient laws and activist woke judges who don't care about crime victims whether they be the public, police officers, an 11-year-old girl, just last week, she cares about the woke aggressive agenda. >> todd: he was on probation for gun charges at the time. two florida sheriffs saving a nine-year-old boy from a house fire caught on tape. you can see them rushing up to the house before it explodes into flames. two sheriffs joined us earlier with their story. >> it was frantic, people were screaming, at that point, trying to figure out how to best help kevin and how we would try to locate this child and get him out. >> that room was completely full of smoke.
2:24 am
every minute counts, every second counts. quick action and bravery, the fact they never gave up on that child, it is their heroic action, the reason this child is alive today. >> joe: the pair are true examples what it means to be a hero. i think we can all agree with that. with that, toss it over to fox weather meteorologist, britta merwin. looking at saturday, it may have been a bad idea to spend 10 hours outside doing yardwork. >> i know you plan today for quite sometime, you picked the wrong weekend. if you would have waited until today, more comfortable. 60s for boston. upper 50s for cleveland, whiching off a scorching weekend. we had record highs in the 90s. enjoy the break from the heat. on radar, showers continue out west. look at the mess in the southeast. an area of low pressure
2:25 am
developed in the gulf of mexico. national weather service was watching it. never ended up developing. tropical moist sursurging into the southeast. you can see that spin moving into alabama. we have a cold front stalled out and all this is going to lead to a soggy week. we have daily showers and thunderstorms in the forecast between now and wednesday night pochlt tential of three to five inches from alabama to tennessee moving into virginia. daily showers and thunderstorms in the forecast, for southern planes moving into arkansas, louisiana and sloppy mess in the southeast we're looking at. grab your umbrellas and stay dry. todd. >> todd: thank you. title 42 staying in place for now. border officials bracing for a migrant surge. rachel campos-duffy got back from tex and got this warning. >> they are going to your community, your big cities, going to the east coast, going
2:26 am
to the west coast. >> todd: rachel will join us with her first-hand account next.

2:30 am
>> brooke: former president trump reacting to testimony that revealed hillary clinton approved sharing false information with the media alleging he was communicating with russia ahead of the 2016 election. the former president telling me, "this is one of the greatest political scandals in history, for three years i had to fight her off and fight the people off, where do i get my reputation back," and the former president warned that the investigation into his campaign distracted officials from "what could have been a real danger from russia," trump's comments after clinton campaign manager testified at michael sussmann's trial about clinton's personal involvement. sussmann is charged with making a false statement to the fbi, claiming covert communication channel from donald trump to russia to baker.
2:31 am
baker said he brought it as a citizen of national security. his team has evident showing that michael sussmann billed the clinton administration for the meeting. baker testified that the fbi investigated the data alleging a trump connection to the russia bank and found "nothing there." here is what former trump aid revealed. >> i feel he has a few more indictments coming. hillary clinton spent millions on opposition research instead of politics. she spent north of $50 million to $100 million pucking money into perkins to have a cut out like the fbi had a cut out with christopher steele. >> brooke: trial is beginning second week today, we are expecting to hear from fbi officials, including tricia
2:32 am
anderson and bill prestaff. >> todd: thank you. all eyes on the supreme court which could issue a ruling on roe v. wade early as today. james comer joined us earlier calling for a draft of the leaked draft opinion that caused protest across our country. >> the administration has done irreparable damage to the united states. taking the leak and using to motivate their base to the tune of violence is imminent in their mind is another act of incompetence by this administration. >> todd: the white house is bracing for a summer of violence ahead of the highly anticipated rule. >> griff: a federal judge blocking today's rollback of title 42, but biden administration says they are ready to appeal even as the u.s. sees record surge of migrants with others still in place.
2:33 am
>> todd: rachel campos-duffy rode to eagle pass, texas. here is what she saw. >> rachel: we're getting ready to take state troopers over the rio grande. what do we have right here? >> this is a group of 130 plus that just came across. five border patrol agents will be tied up for the rest of the day processing the ones that just came across, exposing vulnerable gaps. >> rachel: this is like a tent city? >> right. this was developed to alleviate overcrowding near the sector. you can see there, there is a fence, a structure, goes to show you for this particular purpose, they believe having a fence or barrier is priority or vital to what they're doing here as far as processing, yet we don't see
2:34 am
that around the border, where it is needed. >> rachel: what is this here? >> you see panels of the previous border wall that was being constructed. the border wall was cancelled last year, this is wasted panels that could be used for the border wall. >> rachel: the lieutenant took me to get a closer look at the border crisis right next to the rigrande. >> shoes, personal items. >> rachel: this is someone's private property right here? >> this is private properties, this barbed wire was put up by the state to stop crossings taking place. some wet clothing, they use it to push down on the barbed wire, allowing them to crossover. this is the federal government's job, right now we're having to bear this burden, troopers, national guardsmen putting up fencing. this is state-funded operation,
2:35 am
this is the federal government's responsibility to safeguard the americans and border and secure it. >> rachel: who controls this area? honestly, is it the cartel? >> the cartel, they are using messages as far as border is open to encourage migrants to make this journey. they pay a fee to the cartel. >> rachel: i spoke to some cubans this morning. each spent $12,000 to the coyotes to get to this point right here. we just saw a group of illegal migrants crossover here. >> rachel: only people who have any benefits if they work for the government in nicaragua. >> rachel: i started talking to them, they were willing to give an interview, border patrol came and said you are in my custody,
2:36 am
you can't talk to the media anymore. the federal government doesn't want us to know what is going on. shocked by the lack of transparency. >> good question for the federal government to answer that. they need to be transparent, this affects everybody and the state of texas. every state is a border state in the state of texas. >> rachel: children coming across, a little life jacket right there, obviously a child's life jacket, they are making the journey with kids. >> this is national security and we have to take into account the children coming across. once they make the journey to the united states, where do they end up? >> rachel: uvaldi, texas, not even the mayor is allowed to see what is going on inside. >> we have churches that brought clothes, formula, food, for kids in there, tried to bring it.
2:37 am
weren'ts allowed. this is the most nontransparent government i've ever seen in my life. there is law enforce sxment people follow him everywhere he goes, go stay on a ranch two miles from the border and see what the common ordinary citizen has to do because of lack of ability to take care of the border. there are families that won't let their kids play outside unless the parent is out there with a gun. >> rachel: you can't handle this amount of illegal immigration coming through uvaldi. >> we can't. they plan to process these peep and he will release them, they are not staying in uvaldi. they are passing through, going to your community and big cities issue the east coast issue the west coast and to mid-america.
2:38 am
>> griff: "fox and friends first" weekend cohost rachel campos-duffy joins us. rachel, that was a remarkable package, it really showed everything in lieutenant chris olivera does such a great job. my question, what stood out most to you and do you believe if president biden actually went and saw it with the lieutenant it would change his mind? >> rachel: first of all, you know this, griff, better than anyone. it has to be seen to understand. i've been reporting on it, getting your reports, nothing more shocking than going down and seeing this is not about enforcing our border. it is entirely from what i saw, a processing operation. that is all that it is about. that is why there is such a lack of transparency, they don't want the american people to know. border patrol seemed under duress, not because they the lack of moral they don't get to
2:39 am
secure the border, they are under orders not to let us see that or talk to us. they know this is about processing. you saw that on the clip. he's actually the border patrol is lowering the barbed wire and allowing them to come over. they are on american property when they come across the river. nobody is saying, go back. you have to return to mexico on the other side of the river, they are taking them in and quickly whisking them away to places we can't see and in the middle of the night, putting them on buses. this is deliberate process, the president went down to the border, i don't know if anything would change. this is the policy, this is what they want. >> griff: rachel, not just lack of transparency, it is land nothing westchester county. if the white house is proud of what they are doing, don't you
2:40 am
think they would be open about it? they are trying to hide the ball and do something secretive, right? >> rachel: absolutely. one of the saddest things you saw in front of the child migrant center, top secret, no one could go in there, 11, 12 or 13 year old will end up in the local hospital delivering a baby. we understand what the dangers are coming across, i sent your producers a picture of a little boy abandoned on a ranch that state troopers and border patrol had to rescue, that is what the cartels do. this is evil business, enriching the cartels, they control that area of eagle pass. our border patrol is there. the mexican government was on the other side and people were still crossing. who is in control? the cartel. it is shocking, i wish kamala harris and joe biden would change the policy if they saw
2:41 am
it. i doubt it. this looks organized. this is what they want and the american people need to see it. glad fox gave me a chance to go. >> griff: i wish they would sunday the vice president and president down. rachel campos-duffy, great job. everyone needs to see the remarkable work border patrol is doing, but their bosses not letting the rest of us see it. you exposed it. great job. rachel. >> rachel: thank you to texas state troopers, they are telling the story. border patrol, not allowed to. thank you for having me. >> griff: more controversy for black lives matter. we just found out they gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to a group whose leader refers to police as pigs. >> todd: cheryl casone has the story on "fox and friends first." bor's house? it's sliiiiiiiiii-der sunday! everyone grab a king's hawaiian slider! ...slider sunday?
2:42 am
sliiiiiiiiii-der sunday! we've got philly cheesesteak sliders on king's hawaiian slider buns! oh, my. and we got cheeseburger sliders on king's hawaiian pretzel slider buns! sliiiiiiiiii-der sunndayyyyyyyyyyyyy!!! new jobs, where unemployment is down to 3.6%. imagine where we would be if putin tax and war in ukraine had we not made that enormous progress. >> griff: president biden -- >> todd: the problem the
2:46 am
president says americans are facing. >> cheryl: president biden continues his overseas trip. he's now in japan to launch regional plan that aims to fight back against china's influence. when ask about what is happening at home economically, here is the answer. >> president biden: our gdp will grow faster than china's for the last 40 years. >> is recession in the united states inevitable? >> president biden: no. >> cheryl: i got to point out real quick that we had a negative read on gdp in q1. not to correct the president of the united states, but i have to point that out. americans are facing $5 plus. right now look at this, $4.59, likely to climb above $5 soon, guys. >> griff: down in georgia, the
2:47 am
race for governor heating up. democratic front-runner seems to be insulting her own state. >> cheryl: yes, stacey abrams running for government in a state she doesn't seem to be fond of. >> we have to have a conversation about who we are in this state and what you want for each other. i am tired of hearing about -- >> cheryl: this despite the fact stacey abrams owns at least two homes in the state. stacey abrams has net worth of $3 million. ryan kempe says georgia is the best state to live, work and raise a family. >> todd: another day, controversy for blm6789 >> cheryl: revelations continue about spending habits of black lives matter global foundation amid numerous scandals. latest is $200,000 donation

2:49 am
information. doc, how worried should we be? >> i don't think we should be worried. for now according to cdc it was found in africa, usually in south africa, central africa and usually endemic in this part of the country. we're seeing sporadic outbreaks, we think there are mutations involved. it is human behavior, surrounding environment? this virus jump friday animal to human and seeing this human to human transmission from open wound, skin to skin contacts, bodily fluid, coughing, sneezing, patients have swollen lymph nodes. they get a rash on their face and it spreads. i don't think we should be worried. >> todd: how deadly is this?
2:50 am
>> most people recover well, especially outside of africa. mortality rate is 1 to 10%. current strain in the united kingdom and germany and france and even here in the united states has a low mortality rate. if you are high risk person, todd, we have a vaccine for small pox that can give you protection against monkeypox if you happen to be exposed. we have anti-viral medication that exists that could potentially be used to treat monkeypox. >> todd: we're all covid fatigued, lockdown fatigue. biden said no lockdown, could you see us potentially having lockdowns, please say no? >> absolutely not. i don't think under any circumstance we should have another lockdown. was the lockdown and muzzling the viruses had an impact on how the diseases are evolving. we're seeing heart attack
2:51 am
epatitis outbreaks and now monkeypox. i don't think it is going to be beneficial to anybody. >> todd: big sigh of relief. happy birthday uncle jimmy, he wanted me to get that in. >> todd: thank you. breaking overnight, president biden says the u.s. military will defend taiwan if china invades. congressman michael waltz responds next.
2:52 am
. .
2:53 am
2:54 am
2:55 am
you didn't want it get involved in the ukraine conflict. are you willing to get involved militarily for talk juan if it documents that? >> you are. >> that's a commitment we made. >> todd: president biden says the u.s. military is ready to respond if china invades taiwan.
2:56 am
>> griff: congressman michael waltz is a member of the house committee and green beret commander. congressman, breaking news this morning. nobody to have on than to you discuss it. i want to get your reaction do these remarks and also a clarification. the white house says it's not a change in policy but it sure feels like it. >> hey, griff, yeah. actually i welcome the president's strong language right on china doorstep as he is meeting with the new japanese prime minister. i was then going to say but i hope the white house doesn't come around and try to clean it up. it sounds like they already are. and that kind of ambiguity isn't helpful. we need to make it very clear to china that invading taiwan, which will then allow china to control about 50% of global trade and g.d.p. isn't acceptable. and we need to move away from that molly of strategic ambiguity that we have had for years and make it very clear because, griff, deterrence
2:57 am
failed. let's be clear. deterrence failed in ukraine. we did not deter putin from invading his neighbor and leveling whole cities. yes, we are having a tough response, but it's a day late and dollar short. we can't wait until taipei, the capital of taiwan is leveled much like mariupol is now to then have a tough response. we need that tough talk upfront and i hope his staff doesn't try to come around and muddy the water. >> todd: we got the muddy the in water just moments after he talked tough this is the second time this has happened this is on the heels on the debacle of afghanistan and quite frankly the fact that we did not arm the ukrainians at the outset when we should have instead we are funneling money in after the fact. >> that's right. >> todd: combine all of this together. is all of this happening. is this potential problem that weekend face in china all a result of the weakness that biden has demonstrated throughout the first year and a half of his administration? >> well, on top of that, the
2:58 am
