1:08 am
one of them is their traditional relationship that goes back to the cold war, but the other thing, carley, that americans don't focus on, that is the chaotic withdrawal from afghanistan last year severely delegitimized america's friends in new delhi, because new delhi was a strong supporter of the afghan government. that means that the pro-russia elements in new delhi really have become much more influential recently. so this is a result of the failure of our policy in central asia. >> todd: but doesn't a flippant remark it like that by the president really obscure the important question that was ultimately being asked? i understand your explanation, but let's be realistic -- if india decouples from russia, specifically russian oil, that's really going to hurt the russian war effort and could help ukraine in the long run, which seems to be, rightly so, what the world community wants. >> it is certainly what the world community wants, and the world community is not very

happy with india's close relationship with moscow. at this particular time, it just shows you that, once you make a big mistake in one place, it's going to have long-term reverberations. so right now president biden is not going to say, "oh, yeah, i really screwed up in afghanistan and that's why we have this problem in ukraine," but the american people need to understand that the biden policy has been a failure and it'll affect our relationships on more critical things like, for instance, getting india on board with ukraine and getting india on board with china. speeeighteen he could have made that "welcome to the american press," because everyone was shouting at once and he didn't hear the specific questions being asked, but we'll have to wait and see. maybe he should clarify that comment. something else that needs a lot of clarification was the fact that president biden initially seemed to signal that the u.s. would get involved militarily if china invaded taiwan. now he's back to the stance of
1:10 am
strategic ambiguity. how do you read this back and forth between the biden administration and the president himself yesterday? >> this is an amateur hour at 1600 pennsylvania. this actually has real-world consequences, largely because the chinese will look at this and say that the administration is incapable and irresolute. biden was very clear a couple days ago when he said, "look, the united states will defend taiwan." there was no ambiguity about that. now, under pressure, you have his subordinates contradicting him, and biden now changing his tune. this is bad, and it's bad not with regard to taiwan only, it's up to the regard of all our defense commitments around the world. >> todd: gordon, this keeps on happening. this isn't the first time. take a look at this montage. >> the president delivered a forceful denunciation of vladimir putin.

1:12 am
but the point is people shouldn't be talking to the president of the united states anymore. they should be talking to the press secretary, because obviously the press secretary is more influential in setting american policies in the president of the united states. and that's the reason why our friends and allies and partners are looking at us and saying, is united states still the united states? that's a question the biden team is going to have to answer. >> todd: love him or hate them, people voted in joe biden. nobody voted in john mclean or karine jean-pierre. we appreciate your insight. thank you very much, sir. >> thank you, todd and carley. >> todd: meantime, the fbi taking center stage in the durham probe trial of michael sussman. >> carley: building its case against the former clinton campaign lawyer accused of making a false statement to the bureau during the trumpet russia collusion investigation. good morning. >> good morning. yesterday we heard from current and former fbi officials during
