we will be playing country music over the place even if you are not a fan of country music, it is memorial day and patriotic. >> todd: it puts you in the mood to honor america but most importantly honor those who paid the ultimate price that we can enjoy today and everyday in the land of the free and of course, that the home of the brave. this is definitely the home of the brave. with that, a lot of you traveling will see a lot. a holiday crisis, gas prices and flights being canceled due to staff shortages at airlines. >> ashley: alexandria hoff live with more, alexandria. >> good morning, ashley, todd. i wrapped up my holiday travel at the airport and it was no joke. aaa predicts 25% more americans will travel for this holiday than they did last year between weather, airline staff issues, hundreds of flights canceled this week and including more than 200 so far today. that is on top of passengers

to come out and vote. i would say to the back of the republicans are motivated to come up here they don't want the policies of chuck schumer and nancy pelosi and joe biden. there is no sign joe biden will open up american oil and gas and start pumping more, start drilling more and building more pipelines. that is not going to happen. he will not stop going after law enforcement and light on criminals. that balance can help democrats. and i don't see that the next five months. >> todd: college tuition, boston university tell us they need to raise rates by 4.25% and the academic year. the university president says the increase does not even began to offset the increased cost to operate caused by the inflation of prices. the university's 4.25% hike is the biggest in years and comes as some salaries soar above

$1 million. returning to washington yesterday honoring heroes who paid the ultimate price. veterans all over the country thundering through the capital for the annual ride bearing flags and fallen friends and family. >> we need to remember where we came from and who we are as a people. without these people that fought for our country, we wouldn't be here today. >> todd: went the right becoming a memorial day tradition in washington and started in the '80s. the organization is spanning summation of a role to remember to bring awareness and help federal and struggling with physical trauma. speed to washington, comedian jon stewart came to a memorial day week rally to advocate for more government accountability. take a listen. >> it is hard not to be here today and not get frustrated again. because i look in the crowd and i see the same thing i always see. veterans and their families and

came together to worship and ask president biden and joe biden to travel to uvalde to lay flowers on the side of the attack. the president reassuring shaken residents that are demanding him to take action. 19 children and two teachers were killed in that massacre and leaving family shattered. we are learning or heart-wrenching details about the deadly attack and the steps taken by first responders. >> mom told me that her child had been shot by one bullet through the kidney area. the first responder that they originally talked to said their child likely bled out. in that span of 30 or 40 minutes extra, that little girl might have lived. >> uvalde only pediatrician describing his experience and the wounded as a complete

madhouse telling nbc, i'm afraid he's coming for me. i'm afraid he's coming to get me have the house. the kids were telling me that. i was hearing that a full day. i am telling you this will be a mental health crisis for our community. the only pediatrician in town. the health officials reviewing uvalde's grandmother he shot before school is in fair condition and consoling victims families, president biden suggested tearing down the school in the wake of the shooting, todd and ashley. >> todd: jackie, thank you. there was a lot of attention on congress right now with democrats using this to push gun control. democrat senator. >> i get it every single time after one of these mass shootings, these talks never succeed but there are more republicans interested in talking about finding this time since i've ever seen in sandy hook and in the end my might end up being heartbroken

but i'm at the table in a more significant way with democrats and republicans than ever before. >> todd: former president trump at the nra convention rejected its overall gun laws saying it will not stop these attacks. many, instead; to bolster his school security. let's bring in dr. kevin roberts president of the heritage foundation. dr. roberts thank you for being here memorial day. you heard chris murphy senator from connecticut talk about an increase nature to buy partisan discussions right now over the gun-control issue. what are you hearing from your sources on capitol hill to what they are talking about and what that means? >> todd what i'm hearing from my sources including members of congress is that senator murphy is correct. there is a larger than usual bipartisan interest in gun-control legislation. i just want to say that i and

all of us at the heritage foundation understand that. i'm adopted an educator and what happened and uvalde is a huge national tragedy. i don't question the motives of those who want to protect innocent lives of others in the future. what i question is the politicization of the tragedy. not suggesting everyone that wants to do gun-control is doing that but what i suggest is the real conversation we need to have is to center around things that are upstream from uncontrolled and gun-control legislation but the problem, unfortunately is not guns but young men. i say that lamenting that as an educator as a father of four, we need to focus on the mental health crisis in shoring up the security of schools. obviously that was a huge problem at that particular campus. speak to dr. roberts, a lot of people want the gun-free zones for schools. and that's proven it's not really working. what do you suggest would work? i do think something needs to

happen. i'm not so sure it needs to be taking away everyone's guns. i'm very pro and i think a lot of people watching this are as well. what would you say as far as having former or even current police and military guarding those schools? it is impossible to get anywhere else with airports and even people's places of work, but yet the schools are a free-for-all. so what do you think? >> i agree with you entirely, actually. and just to be clear, of course, all of us at the heritage are huge supporters of the second amendment. i believe we need to have the right conversation when it comes to policy. you put your thumb on it. we need to remember 94% of shootings happening gun-free zones. we have a conversation that senator murphy wants to use bipartisan coincidences in a productive way to end gun-free zones and making sure armed officers at every school. that is the kind of thing, the kind of deterrence that in the

near term will put dough might prevent these tragedies from having and by us the time to har more productive conversation about the fatherhood crisis, the mental health crisis, the breakdown of the family over multiple decades that many of us have been signaling would have really tragic consequences as we continue to see almost every month in american schools. >> todd: kevin, you heard jackie's report, the president say "i will take action." over the course of the weekend and sunday particularly come in the white house present on those shows saying what the action would be. what is your reaction to that and secondly, what action should this white house take? >> i will just be blunt, todd in the spirit of memorial take some of the american people don't trust this administration to take action on anything. because up to this point and biden's presidency every time they take action in the economy is worse and will make the

situation worse by overreacting with gun-control and legislation. therefore, the action they need to take if willing to listen to me and i say this being a proud american especially on this holiday is this: let's end gun-free zones. let's end this conversation about gun-control legislation that would not fix this. i would encourage president biden to lead into an attribute of his that got him elected, which is people saw a slim majority of americans saw him as this grandfatherly figure and i say that to be supportive, leaning into that and guide us into a conversation as a country our families can be stronger, how we can encourage elements to step back from the brink of despair and be fruitful members of society. that is actually what this administration needs to be focused on. >> ashley: we have to go to this, a travel nightmare, the holiday weekend as the gas prices hit record highs and flights canceled, worldwide

canceled appeared in over 1,000 domestic flights canceled. here, people are saying i will avoid the get gas prices and take a flight yet, these are canceled. something has to give because these gas prices keep going up and up and up. it is almost becoming impossible for people to travel at all. so, what is the administration going to do about this? it seems like they are trying to make it difficult for anyone to move anywhere. >> well, ashley, what the administration is doing is actually implementing what the president a week ago called the incredible transition from fossil fuels. so sort of going back to todd's previous question actions from the administration, the reason i'm so pessimistic about the administration taking action on anything is they have a very radical view of the country in the world. i will give you antidotal example. my family of six and i were planning to take a trip yesterday and it took me four tries, fort tries to put diesel

in my f-150 pier that is ridiculous and that doesn't even get into what it cost to fill up the tank. every american is feeling this but the heart of the question, ashley i'm sorry to say the gas prices will continue to go up all the way through the end of summer and ultimately, this will have significant political consequences for the president and his party. they are the ones responsible for implementing this. >> todd: you heard president obama say the poll numbers rice and fell and going the opposite direction. americans crossing the border to mexico to find baby formula. many people say the shortage is not an issue there, listen. >> one of my friends lives in l.a. and she is having problems with that as they are out of formula. and she used to buy it here at costco so i don't have any problems with that. >> todd: dr. roberts, how does

this happen? the most powerful nation on the planet one-ups and buys from the neighbor to the south? >> it is here the honest to god truth is the reason this happens is a government monopoly in three quarters of the monopoly for baby formula. i know that sounds crazy early on a monday morning, but i'm telling you commit is the truth. the wic program which delivers may be for -- a wonderful "wall street journal" from a week and a half ago. basically we need to change that and we need the government to get out of that business so people who need baby formula can buy it. it is a classic government overreach. >> ashley: a lot of people are blaming the plant that was shut down and saying they need to be held accountable but what about the fda? they should have known this was going to happen. so what happens there?

the fda and abbott to be held accountable? how do you hold the government accountable and they can't take a risk and do it again because that will not do anything and we will be in the same position again. >> well, and the spirit of the day, ashley, and let may be also candid about this, big government socialism has a lot of consequences. it is when big corporations and big government get together not for the average consumer but yes, you are correct that we need to hold the fda responsible for this. the fda in case someone watching or listening to this is unaware and a very poor track record when it comes to doing what it supposed to do. the heritage foundation for a long time has supported massive reform for the fda to deliver better services for american spirit but also, abbott, of course, the big collusion with government. we need to get to the point where companies are making decisions for their consumers. in this case, americans who haven't spent a lot of time

>> todd: president zelenskyy visiting eastern ukraine with gains in the region including capturing a nearby city with a massive railway junction and access to very important infrastructure. retired brigadier anthony tata and author of "chasing the lion." great to see you as always. the city's name is alignment, why is this important? >> todd, great to be with you and it is a rail hub. the infrastructure to move east, west, north, south is key. you look at what vladimir putin has tried to do which is capture of the seaport in mariupol with

the rail hub and all of the oil and gas infrastructure in the eastern region, donned boss, that is the real prize that putin is going after and the resident in that terrain purity wants to be able to get to the gas, the oil and move it by rail and cool, quite quite frankly down to the port and get it onto the market. >> todd: it has been said the capture really sets up putin for the next stage of the war. brigadier general, what is the next stage of this war? >> i really think that we have to look at the big picture here. he pressed on kyiv early on and that was not successful. there is some debate whether he meant to capture kyiv or what we called military fixing action to allow him freedom of maneuver in the east to fix forces up in the west while he maneuvered in the east.

with this phase focused on the eastern part of the country that he is going to consolidate his gains, he asked to, he really is losing at a 4/5 ratio versus ukraine and lost 20 2:30 thousand soldiers and the ranks and the lust of junior officers and they don't have thy does so there's a leadership issue. when you think of the next phase he has to ask himself does he have what it takes to continue to move across the river which is just to the west of that donbas region with major, major operations. >> todd: great job in the previous answer setting the stage for us. we can understand what's going on. with that in mind, do you see any chance for peace negotiations any time the future? >> todd, you have france and germany trying to couple

together talks and it's called normandy and it was successful in 2014 when they found the resolution to the crimea crisis. they tried it again in december /january 6 months ago and it was not successful. i have no reason to believe it will be successful now. the big question, where is antony blinken and the u.s. state department on this? are diplomatic efforts have been nonexistent at worst. so right now, there is no leadership from our country involved in this operation to try to bring a settlement. i'm reminded of the great job president clinton and general west clark did in resolving the serbia attack on bosnia with peace accords. i would hope eventually we would find something like that.

>> todd: it is a shame because all eyes on that country of ukraine. it seems like antony blinken is distracted but we will move on. let's get your message as someone who has served. what is your memorial day message to our country? >> you know our country has never been more divided than the american civil war in my opinion. i think it is time for people of political stripes to take a hard look at the surface of the men and women that have gone before us. i have sergeant bill viable who got wounded next to me in afghanistan later killed in action in afghanistan. and doug sloan, one of my paratroopers killed in afghanistan and bill jacobson come another one of my airborne troopers killed in iraq. i think of them. when i think of the divisions in this country today, we need to

hopefully they will figure it out. i want to get your thoughts, you will remember brave and men for the liberties and especially the 13 heroes who died last year in afghanistan. cory, your thoughts. >> todd, as you know, i was part of a team that conducted the very first rescue of a mother and three children in afghanistan. we were actually on the planting on august 26th where these 13 brave heroes gave their lives. as president lincoln said they paid the full measure and given the ultimate sacrifice. today is a day of remembrance, a day of reflection not to try to play politics or blame the left or the right but reflect on the cost of freedom. i would ask everyone and implore you to look online or search for those in your community, your township that has lost the

payback with constitutional liberties. today is not about barbecue but about honoring the fallen heroes in this country. i want to take one special moment and recognize congressional candidate joe kent's wife shannon a navy combat veteran who gave her life in syria. i want to thank her and thank him and think the gold star families for supporting these great heroes who went out and gave two lives, the one they are living. >> ashley: cory as a combat vet, what does this day mean to? >> for me, it hits him to think about the brothers who we have lost at sea. to think about the fact it could have been any of us. there is no palm, bullet that has a name on it. it is one of those things that happen when we are in combat and things are uncontrollable. for me it's about reflecting on those i serve with them families they left behind. it is thinking about fiancées,

mothers, daughters, children they have left behind. and also, looking at the polarization that's gone on in america and we will come together at any point in time and it should be today for those willing to give the sacrifices to honor those sacrifices made on our behalf. >> todd: earlier in the program, jon stewart speaking to a number of veterans and families of the fallen veterans. he said, why every year when i'm here is it the same audience? where are the people who don't have a connection necessarily with their family or friends to the military? why are they not hear? that underscores a big problem and society in this day and age. people don't understand what they got their freedom from. it is a lack of gratitude there. do we change that? is there anything happening to change that? that is fundamental to understand what america is all about. >> i will tell you this is where

elected officials and americans need to be cautious with dangerous narratives to create division and law enforcement officers and military that serve. we must remember law enforcement officers are enforcing laws put in place. we think about the military who fought these wars and actually fight. and congress right now only made up of 17% military veterans even before combat veterans. this is really about trying to bring the nation together and understand what it cost to keep us free. this is about understanding the great land and the fact that we live in the greatest nation on earth as long as we can keep it. as they say, we are one generation of losing this as president reagan said multiple times. we have to bring ourselves at least at minimum to honor the brave men and women willing to give their lives for our freedoms, for our nation, for

♪ ♪ >> ashley: memorial day is a time to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country. here u.s. navy seal charlie, army specialist chris and marine lance corporal jacob levy. and for families who lost their loved ones as they fought for our freedoms, this week and holds great significance in a time to keep the memories alive. gold star parents, joseph, david horton and amanda jacobs ballard joined me to honor their fallen son. all three of you, thank you for joining us this morning but most importantly, thank you for your sacrifice as well so that we can live free and safe today. chris, i want to start with you, there is a scholarship that you have been putting together an

memory of your son, charlie. tell us about that. >> well, i just wanted to say i am a mom of two u.s. navy seals. i'm a proud mom one from iraq, and i'm just very thankful for your show. and to people in this country so that they understand the veterans day and this memorial day for the one who got home and the one who didn't. it warms our heart to do this for the family. a 7-year-old boy who put a navy poster on the wall and said that's what i want to be and he did it. >> ashley: what do you want america to know about your son? >> he was a strong boy and became a man and the most patriotic son could ever have. he gave his life for our country. he believed in so many wonderful things and save so many people on that day may 3rd. it is a tough day because he died may 3rd in iraq.

and we have memorial day. i'm thankful for those who remember and don't make it a political name. >> ashley: we are thankful for your son who sacrificed. david to come i want to go to you. what is the most important thing you think people need to know about gold star families? >> well, i just wanted to say my son chris gave his all, gave his life on the battlefield in pakistan fighting for our freedoms, but another thing that is important is that he was fighting for the constitution. his pledge to the constitution. and i was privileged a couple of years ago and i think maybe last year to do the invocation at the pentagon for the permanent display for gold star families, which is very important to us. and this was an initiative that

was led by my daughter-in-law, chris's widow, jay horton and the general. after the ceremony was finished, we were invited to general milley's office and there was a young boy who had lost his father also in afghanistan. gold star family there. the rest of us were standing in the office and general milley was very courteous. the thing that stood out in our mind, he gave this boy a copy of the u.s. constitution and spent the majority of the time about almost 30 minutes just talking to this young man and telling him the importance of the constitution and what the enormity of his father's sacrifice. i just -- you know, again something mentioned a minute ago about politics and all of that, which is just a part of our lives.

this day is not about politics here this day is not about partisan arguing or liberal conservatives. this day is about remembering those who gave their all. my son, chris, being one of them. we are coming on 11 years now of his sacrifice in afghanistan. and every year, it weighs heavier on our hearts what happened and the meaning of this day, you know, sure, everybody should have a good time and do their barbecue or whatever. but just keep in mind the enormity and the weight of it. if you have never visited arlington national cemetery or another military section of a military, you should maybe take a minute to make that visit or walk by and read the names and call the names out and realize

that the freedom is not free. that is ever much the reminder on a day like today. >> ashley: amanda come i want to get to you. i read this, you said jacob would be grilling steak and potatoes this day. i love that. it tears my eyes and chills, but made me so happy. tell us about your son that you want america to know about him. >> well, one of the important things, like you said, he would be grilling steak and potatoes because he would still want to be remembered and celebrate those who served with loss at the time. but unfortunately, he was the one that didn't get to come home. what i hope people to remember about jacob is he was such a giving person. he paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend this country, our

freedoms, our rights, and are every day to enjoy the steak and potatoes or hot dogs. but also, one of the things i found out about him when i went to germany is that he was an organ donor. and so there are several people alive today and more than i could ever imagine that are enjoying this day. and i hope they will be remembering jacob, not only for his sacrifice, but for being unselfish and just wanting to help people. we look at today come i was presented a scholarship at the hospital the other day to a young lady. it amazes me at that time when i look across the school, these kids hadn't even been born when 9/11 happened. so for jacob to continue to give and give and give others to have
