with all on this. >> sandra: a big line-up, but an economy in crisis. americans are looking for solutions to those surging gas prices and the highest inflation in decades. but it has democrats staring down a red wave in november as more and more voters are coming to the conclusion biden administration is not up to the task. hello, and welcome as we begin a brand-new week. sandra smith in new york. >> john: great to see you back after a long weekend. john roberts in washington, and this is "america reports". the price of gasoline setting a record high the tenth day in a row, an average of $5 a gallon. the cost to fill up the tank up 103% since president biden took office. >> sandra: and people are certainly taking notice. those numbers putting democrats' hopes in jeopardy in november, 83% of the american people in a new abc news poll say the economy is the top issue for them heading into the fall.

ceremony, rolling out today. this just all happened via press releases, and there's also no direct link between long-term clean energy goals and the short-term price hikes that americans are experiencing right now. that said, officials here say they are confident that plans they have already put in place are not contributing to inflation. >> i have reporters call me when delta hit, when omicron hit, when putin went into ukraine saying is that it, will that derail the recovery, and so far you have seen resilience, and i think that has a lot to do with the strength of the american recovery act. >> peter: president biden's inflation fighting plan is not new, outlined it in the state of the union and hinges on the hands off approach for interest rates, leaving that to the fed, plus an effort here to reduce the deficit. >> well, first the president's come out with his plan to fight

determining the congressional vote. last week, the new york gas tax was taken off to the end of the year, save $0.16 a gallon. in california, the governor is urging rebates, up to $400, and if the rebate should be less. and north carolina, democratic state lawmakers are proposing $200 tax rebate. lawmakers believe it would cost the state $1.3 billion, but come out of the surplus funds. democrats are proposing this, they are in the minority in the state legislature. and house democrats have trying to show they are interested in bringing costs down, a bill to give the federal trade commission for price gouging, a lot of questions what's going to be done to bring costs down now as opposed to months from now.

>> john: the message from the white house is solar panels, ultimately would be a good thing, but that's a -- it's not like now. >> and people want gas prices down now. >> john: and the new abc poll, 27% of people approve the president's handling of the economy. mark, good to see you, thank you. >> sandra: thank you very much. l john, let's bring in jackie deangeles. we have know it's a problem for quite some time and even back further to dig up where gas prices are today, people like to look to election day, prices up 103%. you don't have to -- i'm sorry, inauguration day. you can go back to election day and there was already the anticipation of a candidate joe biden who was very anti-fossil fuels during his candidacy, there was already the anticipation before he ever took office that we would see this rise in oil and gas prices. pull up the chart, this goes
10:07 am
back for the gas prices to election day 2020, and you've got 129% increase in what folks are paying for a gallon of gasoline, a record high, 4.86 today. he broadcast what he was going to do to the fossil fuel industry and we are living through it. >> he telegraphed to everybody, great way to look at it. and inauguration day, 2.39 benchmark, to january 31st of 2022, roughly a month before russia invaded ukraine, gas prices were up 40%. since that january 31st mark we are up 45%, but not just because of vladimir putin but a rise in demand and global demand and the supply has dropped. so when pete buttigieg for example says there's no button in the oval office to fix this, we are a huge part of the supply picture, roughly a third of the global supply picture.
10:08 am
this administration absolutely has power to help fix this. >> sandra: it's interesting last week i was sitting on set with bill hemmer, and we had kellyanne conway on, and what could be asked in the messaging of the white house, it's a crisis, showing up in the polls, acknowledge people are not happy and bring the president to the briefing room and say we have a plan. and gene sperling was asked a question last week and he was prepared no different what is your forecast, he would not commit to one. listen. >> when can we expect gas prices to come down? >> look, you know, i think that we saw them spike up in may, i'm sure that will be reflected in the inflation report that we'll get this week. i'm not in the forecasting business, but i would say, john, that if you look at what forecasters are suggesting, when
10:09 am
you look at -- they are seeing that prices are supposed to moderate this year. >> sandra: and i find myself asking the question i asked him last week, if you are not in the forecasting business, who in this white house is? people need to know there's a plan to bring these prices down. >> apparently nobody is and the forecasters on wall street do not see prices moderating at all. gas buddy is saying by mid june, the $5 mark, i think we will hit that quickly and j.p. morgan is saying $6 or more by the end of the year. i don't know who is telling them that gas prices are going to moderate here, and then to add insult to injury, you have them invoking the defense production act to work on solar. we don't have the technology to store the power. we fleed to work on batteries and figure out how all of this is going to work to make it reliable. this is not a right now solution. he is completely doubling down and the wrong direction. >> wall street journal, electric power, great, electric cars,
10:10 am
great. but we are not ready for that transition today. so we have to do something to bring the gas prices down now but the messaging from the white house, pete buttigieg putting it on, wait for it, the gas companies to do something about it. >> but we also know that the price of gasoline is not set by a dial in the oval office and when an oil company is deciding hour by hour how much to charge you for a gallon of gas, they are not calling the administration to ask what they should do. they are doing it based on their goal of maximizing their profits. >> sandra: ok, but still not all democrats are giving in to this, they are getting nervous about the midterm elections, a democrat says no, wait, more we can do about this. penned an op-ed in the "new york times," biden should convene an emergency task force empowered to lower prices and address
10:11 am
these shortages. we need an all-out mobilization, he's calling for, not just a few ad hoc initiatives, reacting to the headlines. no patience for incrementalism or political spin about economic numbers in these times. democrats cannot just blame republicans for lacking a plan. is the white house listening? >> clearly they are not. the solar push tells me they are not, they are not going to the energy companies saying back up, ease off of you a little bit. we know you are at 12 million barrels a day but you could be at 15. we know the extra 3 million barrels a day would help a lot but they are not doing it. to pete buttigieg's other point, the oil companies are sitting back and twirling their mustaches in the evil conspiracy to price gouge, where were they talking about when they lost money on the balance sheets because nobody was driving a car
10:12 am
this is based on supply and demand. >> sandra: throw the new york post headline, or the front page of the new york post here up on the screen for viewers, folks are not happy, showing up in the polls and not happy to see the president showing up on the beach over the weekend, only 28% approve on his job on inflation, and 83% say the economy is their top issue in the november midterm election. we'll ask phil flynn, the energy man from the chicago trading pits is coming up on that, and james freeman as well. >> john: the thing with electric cars. all well and good, it's aspiration. but the same time, trying to put pushed into electric cars by the left and by the greens, we are getting warnings across the midwest this summer we are in for rolling blackouts. those two things are at odds with each other. if you are going to move us to an electric car economy you've got to increase dramatically
10:13 am
sustainable, reliable electric power. and that means nuclear and there are not a whole lot of environmental groups out there willing to swallow that. >> sandra: and how about access to the charging stations. wall street journal did a piece on friday, they want to try the electric car, they rent one for a four-day get away and spent half the time trying to find a charging station to charge the car. i'm sure everybody has a story about that. >> john: they don't have it quite figured out just yet. critics are saying deal with the problems right now and then fix the other down the road. deadly shootings across the united states this past weekend.
