you have a recipe for disaster for disaster. >> mike: the delays and cancellations are already piling up. all signs pointing to a rough weekend. for travelers the frustration is palpable. senior correspondent casey stegall is following all of those from dallas-fort worth international airport. good morning, casey. >> good morning mike and dana. the folks at aaa tell us this fourth of july holiday us expected to be the second busiest since the year 2000. 20 plus years with over 48 million americans total traveling over the next couple of days where the majority by car, by air is about three and half million which is higher versus last year. only time will tell whether those holidays passengers will further bog down the airports and airlines already this morning i can tell you that more than 700 delays in more than 230 cancellations are being reported

night. there are worries gun violence will only escalate as we head into this holiday weekend. mike tobin is in chicago with the latest. it's true there are worries. >> the official police count is that 15 people were shot in chicago. the most dramatic of the shooting incidents was not restricted to the west or sell side this is in the west side of the loop where the chicago's business district. five guys walked out of a building according to police and got into an argument with an unknown man open fire. both died, three others were shot and wounded from that incident alone. a gun child victims last night ran from people in cars to people just to around on the park. altogether several people in chicago died of gunshot wounds. mayor lightfoot armistice summer

>> dana: in the nation's biggest city a stunning number of detectives are leaving in droves. more than 100 retired in june alone and another 75. figures from the end of may showed more than a hundred officers have resigned more than a thousand more retired. all told the partners have more than 46% in the last few years. rodney harrison is more the suffolk county police commissioner it's good to have you here. what is the outcome when you lose this amount of detectives in a city like new york? >> good morning. it is concerning. of course in order for us to protect such a large city like new york you need a certain amount of police officers. having the mass exodus of cops is going to cause troubles regarding public safety. >> mike: let's pull up a quote from pollock to giacomo he is

the protective endowment associates sedition. he said it's can have a major impact on investigative clot crime. the detective's class are down as we speak and are investigating more cases. it's going to have an impact on public safety. rodney, i think that makes complete sense. it seems quite logical. what's the morale of officers who are sticking behind after all this brain drain then people are leaving law enforcement? >> it's tough. i have something of a front row seat. i've to dollar daughters who are new york city police officers. i hear stories regarding how morale is down and there's a couple of layers of concern. one of course is violence. the second is the lack of support from elected officials. you hear some things and concerns that a lot of the politicians are talking about.

it doesn't necessarily support the police officers and supports the criminals. it's a great job. words matter when we go to protect and make sure police officers are out there are able to do their job. >> dana: there's a jason cavuto and he had us walk out ceremony on tuesday. i just want to read one of the things that he said. to me is to know i love the job but it's not the same job i joined. the nobel law was a big thing with me and it's not even really crime-fighting anymore. you arrest somebody for assault with a weapon, then the person is back at the precinct getting his property next day. they are not locking anybody up even with those records. pay your debt to society, you broke the law. because your county commissioner there you are in suffolk county, do you hear anything from the

governor's audience in the last week about the supreme court decision unconcealed carry. but she doesn't seem to really have the drive or maybe the backing, i'm not sure what it is, to try and make some changes. especially on the laws letter putting these criminals back on the street? >> it's one fortunate because you hear so many different stories coming out of albany regarding which direction they're going in but i guess i stated before, actions count. you're going to see a lot more police officers retire because of the fact that when you happen to be a good police officer and you want to make sure you're holding those criminals accountable, but at the same time you're flying these criminals back out not being

charged for the crimes that you commit against a new yorker it's disturbing. i can understand why people are walking out and why we are choosing to leave the job because it's so discouraging knowing that you can't do your job and unfortunately there's a lot of lip service going on it we need more actions regarding how are going to hold some of these criminals accountable for some of the crimes they are committing. >> dana: thank you so much. mayor adams was asked on good day new york virus on escada if the figures of retiring have the text text of some police recent concern to him and he said no it does not. i think it's probably something that everybody should be paying attention to. all of that institutional memory and experience the crimes don't get solved crime will go up. rodney harrison thank you. please have a good fourth of july weekend.

white house. >> good morning, mike, we've heard calls from other democrats to end the filibuster but this is the first time we are hearing it from the president. he said yesterday that on issues like abortion and exceptions to the senate filibuster should be made. >> i believe we have to codify roe v. wade into law. the way to do that is to make sure congress votes to do that. and if the filibuster gets in the way it should be providing an exception for this. >> dana: without the filibuster 60 votes would not be needed but adding in another supreme court ruling some dumb thing to an exception is enough. in a 6-3 decision yesterday the high court overturned a lower court ruling that gave the environmental protection agency unlimited power to regulate emissions. those in favor of the decision say it takes control away from federal bureaucrats and gives it back to congresswoman. but congresswoman alexandria court oh because your cortez

saying it's disaster. saying we need to do away with the whole thing for the sake of the planet. the president says he plans to work with the judicial department to find a way around the ruling just one -- the present gun-control effort also took a hit when the supreme court ruled last week that americans have the right to carry in public. by the administration did enjoy wade yesterday when the supreme court ruled that the president could cancel the trump era remain in mexico policy which republicans warn will make the situation even more tired. but it's the progressive response when things don't go their way, like abortion being returned to the states, that senator lindsey graham finds more dangerous. >> five days after overturning the decision they want to blow up the senate. beat these people are crazy. >> dana: today the president will meet with democratic governors from seven different states to try and sort out ways to protect access to abortion. mike and dana. >> mike: progressives are

>> mike: well he said this before on a different issue. so-called voting rights. he said there should be a carve out. now another carve out on abortion. just to be clear there's no such thing as a carve out on the legislative filibuster. if one issue breaks through than the filibuster is gone. progressives and democrats might say that's a good thing for they want that. i would remind them that they themselves have used the filibuster. they call it racist now but they've used it many, many times. hundreds of times during recent presidential administrations from the republican party where they were trying to block things like restrictions on abortion but they filibuster that so president biden used to be against a lot of things. he was against roe v. wade at one point, he was against late-term abortion at one point, he was against blowing up the filibuster at one point, that's all gone out the window because that's the direction this party is headed. basically you need republicans in one or two democrats willing to hold the line on this and i

think that's a frightening direction. >> dana:esque i mentioned you need a list a couple of democrats to go along with this. once again the president is telling the squad that he wants something, or is willing to do something, but he can't actually deliver on it. when you make of that part of it? speak of her stuff good morning. i think a couple of things. i think guys characterization of this is largely right but he leaves out some other elements of it. we've had a court in the last 10-12 days do more legislating in the last two weeks in congress is done in two years. you also can't negate or ignore over the last two years we vetted members to the court including justice barrett but she was confirmed less than four weeks out from an election when senator mcconnell said he would not take up a hearing for someone for the supreme court until a presidential election had been done.

there are new facts, i'm not one that has been a believer and advocate for changing the filibuster. around roe v. wade i think you have to add that to the mix. we shouldn't confuse the fact that some of the advocates for changing the filibuster as we talk about it this morning. ellis is the congress needs to figure out rules that allow it to. and right now it doesn't work unless you get 60 votes. >> dana: exactly. you have to actually legislate in a way that you don't have to rely on the judiciary if you do it in such a vague way or in a way that is not constitutional. one last thing i'll get a quick answer for you -- there's this atlantic had died that is getting a lot of attention. it's building on two or three weeks of this kind of thing. it's called it's biden the man out of time? democrats have a growing sense

more from our new york city newsroom, hi, lauren. >> sorry to be the bearer of bad news, dana. look come in u.s. stocks have lost more than $11 trillion this year. stocks are setting records, dana, but they are the records nobody wants to see. the dow lost more than 15% in the first half. its worst performance since 1962, with the nasdaq having its worst first half ever down just about 30%. the s&p 500 dropping more than 20%. it's worse finished since 1970. but the s&p 500 is the one that hits most people the worst. many funds and portfolios track at. that's why retirement accounts have seen some $3 trillion erase this year. we have less, we are spending less, and we are paying more. and that shows when you look at which stocks sectors perform the worst. its consumer discretionary, down 33%. you know the answer to this one,

explain this change, pete? >> ? >> ernest hemingway once said -- he was talking about bankruptcy. it happens gradually until it happens quickly paid a lot of that is true when it comes to numbers like this. if you gradually overrode fidelity had to the founding principles of your countrymen pretty quickly you can get to the point where statues need to come down, buildings need to be renamed, and 1619 needs to be the new founding date. then you are shocked by the fact that pride in our country drops by 30%. dana you've been in politics you know a number like that is hard to move people that far that quick. that's a reflection of -- there's some politics in it as well. it happens on both sides of the aisle. but pride is something that you feel deep down. it's something you are invested in. and we are ripping it out of the minds of young kids. and then are surprised that they don't want to stand up and salute the flag and be proud of where we came from. it's a dangerous situation if you want to perpetuate our

american experiment. >> i'm listening to your book on audible, which i highly recommend to everybody, especially if you're doing your chores and walking around and trying to keep educated. listening to it i'm wondering if you can speak to this. it is teaching patriotism and those values at an early age. we got away from that over the last several decades. >> very much so. if we read the entire narrative, and i know you are, patriotism was placed in to remove god at the beginning sort of cynically. by progressives in the early 20th century. now they are discarding it because it was useful as a transition every step for social change. and if you believe that america was racist and evil from the beginning, then why would you be teaching pride in that? instead you teach pride and other things, or the things that we need to solve are the climate change, or unending inequity that students need to be activists on. it's a change completely in emphasis.

a lot of it also comes back to history books. why don't we know a lot of this? progressives write the history cared ultimately a lot of it makes america look back end. >> mike: numbers military recruiting. according to the department of defense, 9% of those getting americans eligible to serve in the military had any indic inclination to do so. lowest number since 2007. army recruitment lacks 23% behind the target so far. that has to be alarming leadership at the pentagon. how do you explain it? >> you can't talk about this topic without tying it to the one we just talk talk at the bottom. what would you go put on a uniform and get trained to potentially fight and die for country if you don't think is a good place? it is worse in our ability to project power in the future if you're not creating generations of patriots wanting and willing to serve. i serve. i could say anecdotally i know a handful of young men who wanted to join the military didn't because of the vaccine mandate. it can people they didn't feel it was required. and it is required and as a

result they decided to do for that particular decision, hoping a new commander in chief that potentially. kids are out of shape. kids are not learning america's a good place. what can happen? lower standards. >> if you had to do it over again. >> absolutely no doubt, dana commits the best education never got was the university of baghdad with brothers who will be brothers for life. there is nothing more proud of them doing that. but i worry for my kids. there's a lot of wokeness in our military that doesn't make us better at fighting and winning wars. i am worried about --

they were able to determine that she did use a fake name and face passport. he was outbound on the united flight heading to san jose, costa rica. and that's where she had it up. the u.s. marshal hooked up with the local state department diplomatic security services. apparently five hours away in some hospital at the beachfront resort is where they ended up putting this thing to rest. thankfully -- >> she will be extradited to the united states where she will be in custody and face trial for the crime. so let me ask you something though. she doesn't seem like she's experienced criminal. is that, that you were taken -- even if you're signing in at a yoga studio? >> well nothing is unexpected in our world as far as chasing violent fugitives across the globe. she had money. as you know she sold her car, she had cash, she went dark for a while.

before the fourth of july but you just noted the record low stock market for the last 50 years. we have the highest inflation rate in 40 years. there doesn't seem to be any solutions coming from washington in terms of dealing with the crisis. the fed is going to have to raise interest rates a lot more. they've been way behind the curve. austin this ride because interest rates rise that actually makes stocks less attractive. i would tell people who are worried about their 401(k) plans, as everyone is, i know my wife and i are come often times the people make the mistake of selling their stock slow. and we are hopefully at a low point right now. if you are in the stock market for your retirement for more than five or ten years, my advice is don't make the mistake of selling low. but we could be in for some real tough times. by the way the gdp growth rate now for the first half of this year, because it's july 1st is the start of the second half of the year, is not protected by the atlanta fed to be negative.

that would mean we are officially in a kind of soft recession right now. >> so president biden claimed that inflation is worst in other g7 countries. but we've got the numbers to show you that the u.s. is on top at 8.3%. the u.k. is right behind us. france and japan, austin, is a time for the white house to come up with a new explanation? >> well i think your numbers are a little bit out of date here. the reason biden said that is because all of the countries in the eurozone, the inflation rate came out and it's almost 8.9%. i think regardless of how you look at it, and all of the advanced economies of the world are having the highest inflation in 40 years. that tells you this problem, while tremendously annoying, is not related directly to what the
