what makes you proud to be an american? watch. >> what is the fourth of july mean to you and why are you proud to be american? >> fourth of july was founding of the country, and i love this country. proud to be an american, fourth of july just means like bunch of fireworks you know, independence, pretty important. >> true meaning of independence day is freedom, and equality. i'm proud to be american because of the principles of the nation -- with the freedom of speech. freedom of religion all rights that we have. lawrence: mr. franklin why are you proud to be an american? >> because i was first president of the united states that was not president of the united states. i was benefit to me was that i was born in 1706 and i was the oldest sign of the dilation of independence and i signed it

four documents highly involved and that is now great nation under experiment. >> why are you proud to be an american? >> freedom -- number one. freedom. >> i appreciate liberties that we have, and that freedoms and diversity that we value here. not always appreciated and that is -- think that's what we strive for. liberty, freedom, variety, diversity. yeah. >> i like that. why are you proud to be american? >> proud to be an american because of what it represents because of like freedom and whole idea of how we got here just makes me -- >> that's great man. that's great. thank you so much. >> that's a smart kid bring in our panel to experts on america fox news contributor joe concha

thank you so much for being with me on this special edition so kevin i'll go to you first brother. why does this seem like people don't understand -- the value of america. you saw those folks but there were a lot of people i spoke to today that they're not proud of the country. >> yeah lawrence that breaks my heart. that we're going come up to this 250 -- year anniversary of this incredible experiment that is america. i'll be celebrating on the south lawn watching the fireworks with the president and doctor of biden and lucky to be there on monday and we'll be celebrating all things that are america. we in recent days an weeks have seen so many people lose their lives trying to come to this country because of its greatness. lawrence: such a good point. >> exceptional nation i came back from overseas i was in italy and france we have envy of the world still. because of what we stand for so we've got to get it together as americans, and remember that heading into this weekend. >> joe later on you're going to

see me in front of a statue and these were black men that were fighting in the civil war. these are men that also celebrated the fourth of july because they realized that idea of america even when they were not free themselves. so i think it seems to me that americans have kind of mixed. they think that the idea of america, you know, and where we are right now has to be perfect instead of striving for the more perfect union. >> absolutely. by the way, kevin i can see why lawrence he's the happy guy now did you hear country and name drops and i was in italy and france this was a quick trip. happy to be back. >> i'm watching fourth of july with the president and the first lady. i mean -- >> all of these beach things that look gorgeous don't come at me joe. [laughter] >> this is true. all right but you see this fox news poll that came out lawrence which is just incredible, and it shows that only 38% of our

citizens our voters are extremely proud offer that country, then you look at the fact that just ten years ago all right not much changed in ten years i would think that number was at 69% now it was 30 points higher when people are asked the same question. i'm thinking wow what changed exactly? and then i realized you know what my kids are taught in schools more and more extreme voices and capitol hill scream over and over again this is bad country. it is a racist country, it is not the shining city on the hill that rage began describe it is going statistically with people unfortunately and many have lost trust in our institutions republicans and democrat it is lost trust in government to do the right thing 85% of the voters say country is on wrong track conservatives don't trust media and educational smg and democrats don't trust the supreme court used to be sacred. so that's where we are at this point fortunately elections coming up in 130 days and perhaps that will get people, you know, engaged again saying this is a great country because

we want change we can vote on it and we're not told who our lead reverse. lawrence: how can we turn this ?arngd it shouldn't be based on political party or fights that we're having currently. our view of the country, i mean, that would be like soldier saying they're not going to fight for our freedoms just because of the state of our politics. it seems look we got this all wrong. >> lawrence it is a really good poangt point and to what joe said i hope we'll see turnout of independence and republicans and democrats in the master's degree term election because issues are so critical. i'm democrat on your panel i love this show. where we can exchange ideas i want everybody to turn out and get back engaminged in this country as i said we're headed into 250 year anniversary of this country and hopefully that will spark a sifng engagement that we have not seen before in this country but to joe's point we need to reengage when it comes to exceptionalism we need to teach that in our classrooms yes we've --

faltered in the history of this country. but we are still that shining city on the hill as joe said the president reagan said so many years ago. >> i mean joe kevin is hitting every point tonight. he normally -- has his talk and he's always been reasonable but the ideas of america he's really hitting tonight. do you agree with him? >> i do an amazingly friendly. so hard to go after him. >> that's true. because i think we're common sense people. in the end -- but yeah, things have become more pessimistic social media has a lot to do with that and everybody is complaining all of the time. and instead of just engaging you want change, then you can still control that for yourself for your family if you work hard enough and since we're here on a saturday night we're showing that, in person right now. >> you know it we work hard. >> yes. i think that's why audience enjoy this is panel right because always civil strong debate -- a lot of opinion. but it is always respectful, and

the problem is -- xrooms loudmouths are getting cram time and talk uncle fix them drink and ignore and he goes about his business so you know what i'm saying? you can only get so many conversations if nobody hits back. but with the ugly thing is that i think -- the media has done a good job of confusing a lot of americans on what's news and what's opinion. used to be pretty cut and dry. where you would knows one was giving editorial or someone was giving his opinion opposed to someone just pitching news. so we've seen a lot of that kind of at gray area confuse a lot of americans and again, those in middle realm trying to vote when it is team vote aren't getting mike time it is extremes that get mike time. >> you know tyrus you make posts because it is confusing to me

because i spend times whether it is around america whether a barber or dining shop and it is not reflective in policy and when you break down the issues about issue yeah they agree with what's -- you know, what the problem is with the country but they seems a lot of -- divisive topic but when you talk to people they actually agree tyrus. >> that's a great point. you prove my point because you are boots on the ground you are talking to real americans you're not talking to talking points or talking to somebody with an agenda and you also verify your sources with actual real people. there was a time in place where it was really important to protect journalists. their integrity by protecting sources now we're seeing other side of it they're using those sourings it is sources to protect them not doing their social work your source can't be twitter and you have to do the work and when you do the work

they'll see it is different than what's presented in polls you're talking to real people doing real things. paying bills going tout out to dinner and they're not concerned what the next people at the table is thinking or voting and they're respectful to each other that's more what america is about polling because of the extremes and because of unfortunately once news became monetary to where the loudest mouth gets most looks that's vj who's getting attention on tv unfortunately. >> such a good point but you used to be educator what can we do to next generation to prepare and teach them about greatness of this country? >> do what you doing my brother go outside -- start talking to young folks. do a little -- give them some wisdom don't push one way or the other, and guide them along the way. they'll find out we all will get there but it takes people doing like you doing going out getting conversation started in roots where people really need a voice

welcome back to with independence day around the corner it is important to shine a spotlight on brave service member who is put on their uniform every day in our forced to operate in shadows i took trip down to fort pearce florida to visit the national navy s.e.a.l. museum and i everyone got a first hand look at the museum k-9 program.

♪ ♪ why is this museum important? >> well because this is where it all started in 1943. so naval combat demolition units train here in is the 1943 to blow beaches in normandy omaha and they do training here this was a big navy base here in fort pearce florida and off the map after the war and -- there was a couple of guy who is lived here that were in team that said this is training area. we have a building right here let's go to county see if we can turn this into a museum to honor those guides. a lot of you guys missed -- never hear about them. does this preserve those emissions as well so when the time is right -- that you can share them? >> yeah. there's a lot of history here in the back room if you don't see. we get donations gis coming in here all of the time and my dad served or i served.

and i've got this knife or this weapon or whatever it is. that they brought back from overseas. during their deployment, and we preserve that here. lawrence: what is something that a lot of people don't know about navy s.e.a.l.es that's not classified? >> that we're ordinary men. ordinary men with extreme training that we've had for many years, it is a no quit attitude as you mentioned it is not the glory just do what we're asked to do and don't come home and celebrate. >> going to be the fourth of july. what does it mean for you? >> independence. country is in a lot of turmoil right now. but we're all patriots. we all love this country, and that's what we need to do is just remember that in our mind not other stuff that's going on. just focus on the country. lawrence: you are the project director of the k-9 project. >> yes, sir.

lawrence: what exactly is that that you guys do? >> we provide working service dogs for veterans of service members. >> you give tbok civilian life? >> yes, sir. >> what different strategies do these dogs put in place? >> well, as my mentors taught me, the dogs -- so we might look at a veteran and they might say hey man i'm okay. dog is saying you're not. right -- so with that ability the dogs are there to heal the operators. everything that we do is under stress. so if we have a veteran who is going to move to crowded place whether it is an airport, crowded place there's stress there right environmental stress. so we work dogs on forces like

this. we'll bring multiple dogs, multiple hand leers and those working on force together each dog has to pay attention to their handler and be bead under that stress. >> so for civilian life while still almost replicateing situations like expense when they were in the service. >> absolutely. lawrence: a humble experience and wonderful program to sees more of my look at the national navy s.e.a.l. museum k-9 program to watch me power through, one of the ferocious bites you'll meet my girl raptor and coverage from across our nation highlight what is makes america so special. now let's bring in a true american hero. a navy s.e.a.l. rob o'neal man who killed osama bin laden. brother it is good to have you in studio.

we always chatting it up on twitter. >> oh, yeah. lawrence: we've talked before but why do you put on the uniform you see division in the country you see some not appreciating america but there's a lot people like you that they don't just put on the uniform they go to the frontlines of the battle. >> i think there's a point that a lot of politicians and a lot of reporters make stuff bigger than it really is. they don't -- men and women with whom i've served in combat, in administrate eve places they don't care about all of that nonsense they care about red, white and blue and defense that we need eventually and push comes to shove these are people on frontline and that was grand navy s.e.a.l. museum and what he was saying was without saying it was one big trade is humility. along with humor because they're funny people and if you can't lat of a yourself and humility showing up and normal people who get it that's how i describe navy s.e.a.l.es as normal guys who get it and pride in country

and pride in each other and when it comes down to it we're fighting for pern next to us and when i get in a fighting it out you're going lose it if you're in the enemy. >> how do we get young people back to love of the country? the appreciation of the country? there's some parts of this country that we're teaching our younger people this is a bad country. they throw around how we were racist when we were formed and there was bad stuff that happened in the country but right now we're doing so much we're world police still at this point. and we're almost we try to nice our way into things and we shouldn't. obviously you know we're a nice country but you have to realize this is a great country. this is a country one of the only trying to get they're dying to gets here literally this is not bad but it is a land of opportunity. you can get the opportunity it is you can pretty much do whatever you want in this country and we have to stop just because yf a bad day you don't tell young kids this is a bad but it is a great country and if you immediate to get somewhere

that's what i did i needed to get out of montana he wasn't there navy guy was there boom. >> i think we have to get to a point where it shouldn't take tragedy for us to unite and whenever there's a national moment the true core of america shows up we volunteer you have people to put on uniform to go to serve and you've got doctors to step up. whenever there's a pandemic we step up. but it seems like when we go back after tragedies over then question go to travel circle. >> yeah we get lulled into complais complacency we think it is that easy and you know you can say defund police or whatever and first responders second someone breaks into your house you want them there and when there's a tragedy you want to be a cop you want to be a firemen and a paramedic or soldier green buret but we have it so good here and we can get lulled into that and especially on fourth of july look around the fourth of july see how

american flag is everywhere. and every day flag day every day we need to celebrate this country it is a great place. >> i have to tell you when something goes down i want navy s.e.a.l.es on my side if something is going to pop off and on the homeland i want to make sure that i haven't ticked off seal. >> i was forced to be part of that team and we were at front lib before 9/11 and we did fight enemy and we're seeing world scariest terrorists peeing their pants because we snuck into their house and interrogating you were down there with the dogs, dog handlers we brought dogs over to you and dogs are working withs and navy s.e.a.l.es out there right now and you know, it is it doesn't matter who you are you screw up bad enough we'll get people there. >> stole my heart there. in the past later on today. brother thank you so much for joining the program. cancel culture coming for

memorializing. >> my hero frederick douglas talked about complicated relationship that he had with abraham lincoln and owned a newspaper and he was going war with the president. but in the end of it end of brokering deals together, he freed slaves through the emancipation proclamation and lost his life because of it and i'm sure you can talk about early days of lincoln say african slave i don't think country is ready. but you've got -- you can't tell part of the story. it seems like for loik and with american story as well. and we're talking about this earlier about like this idea of patriotism and where americas are and left is always disappointed in america because progressive successful rooted in grievance, and right is always disaupon thed in america because conservatism is always rooted in spnt and both done wrong by the masses on those two things. left feel look our prosperity is rooted in a oppression and right feels like we're ruining everything that brought us prosperity and maybe both right

it really does how great it was of those men at that time you try to -- continue that. you know forward. rntion takes a lot of things to make a country work and takes a lot of sacrifice that's what independence day is all about our way of living -- independent life that our country affords us ability to live. >> so what can they expect? >> those men are important to me those are two iftion deployed to afghanistan with and we were mean bomb tech at a new building now and that is memorial for deadliest years for our years but guy in the middle is my commanding officer and guy to his left that guy did post analysis he respond toe many when i was blown up so those two men are heros they're men among men, between two of them hundred of bombs dozens of the deployments and now we're so old like when i remember we were young now they're old and leading that unit. >> i'm sure they'll see this and what was that like seeing guy

that came to your aid do you remember any of that? >> so those two men iemg close with all of the years i've had opportunity to meet doctors that worked on me and it is sure veal. for them it is surreal even to see me the guy on the left for him to see me succeed in life being on balance of literally picking up my pieces -- it is it means a lot to him that means a lot. >> because you do job like i do you became a broadcast and you forget your service but thank you dude thank you for your service. >> it was a lifetime ago and the other day all at the same time. a key civil unit that fought for our freedom and helped make history. don't go anywhere.

welcome back to cross country to help honor this year inexpense day i took a trip to be with the 54th regime memorial monument dedicated to first black regime that fought in the civil war. a crucial part of american history, that shouldn't be forgotten. watch. ♪ ♪ >> so here to celebrate the four fourth of july looking at a part of american history right here. what are we looking at? >> lawrence you're looking at a monument dedicated to the 5th massachusetts robert montana 54th memorial. monument dedicated to one of the first african-american regime of soldiers for the union army during american civil war. the men you see here this is a regime that is going to be all volunteer regime. they're coming from all over the northern united states wanting

to be a part of this historic event. >> this is interesting because my hero freeing rick douglas actually brokering deal saying -- we want to fight for our freedom. >> frederick douglas was a key recruiter he delivered a same speech called member of color to arms where he went all throughout the northern united states trying to get men to sign up for this regiment and two of his sons served in this regiment. >> i think that was a professional moment when his son actually joined the regiment. battle of fort wagner to take -- in the movie glory does a decent job of kind of portraying what that engage was like which is the 54th most famous -- ♪ ♪ battle of forth wagner takes place in charleston, north carolina outside of the harbor

it's well defended surrounded by water swmp and sand get added by narrow strich. july 18th the men of the 54th volunteered it to lead the charge. and again, cannot be -- boycotted and this charge knowing they're going suffer -- which they do on the 54% and one man who is involved in this assault is sergeant from bedford, massachusetts he's likely a freedom speak or someone escaped enslavement settled -- he was color barrier and he had safety aside went through hail of gunfire and he was shot multiple times he make it is back to his master they're shocking -- and pull out the flag tells his men boys i did my duty i did not let the flag touch the ground.

♪ ♪ lawrence: so beautiful because they believed in the idea of america. and even though we weren't living up to it they were willing to fight to make sure we got to that moment. tell me why this location why did we pick this place to honor these soldiers because there's a lot of people that don't know about these soldiers? >> yeah. so the monument itself initially commission in 1883. it is placed here for a reason right across the street massachusetts safe house. seat of the government here in massachusetts -- the commission did not choose to place by accident they chose it when people came to work -- addition anyone working in the state house -- they would see this monument as reminder of what these men sacrificed during american civil war and also as reminder of the

emancipation commission of the civil war. lawrence: as we honor our incredible american history a man who made history himself as first top gun winning pilot and james harvey joining me thank you so much for joining the show tonight. i thank you so much for your service to the country. can you tell me a little bit about what the fourth of july means to you, sir? >> oh, boy -- well independence independence in great britain at this time. other than that time for picnic -- that's party. >> what does the flag mean to you our country, our freedom mean to you? >> it means everything. people trying to come to this country because of the freedoms we have. and without the freedoms that we have we would be in deep trouble. so it means an awful lot. i was able to accomplish what i

was able to accomplish because freedoms. a lot of work but it was worth the work. >> lieutenant colonel i remember the stories and history books story my dad told me about you guys. the ski airmen why did you decide to fight when discrimination was taking place? >> well it is something i wanted a personal accomplishment. but i'm same mind hitler couldn't understand why we would fight for a country that didn't want us but a lot of bad things about us we couldn't do this or that and you if you can pick up army reporter of 1925, you can get it online. it's maxwell air force base that's where it is archived by that report is what we're up

against, and i am from that report if i read it and i quote because i don't it in my psyche. whanch is your advice for the next generation those that want to criticize the country but also that you can love the country as well while you criticize -- the country it is something you did as well, sir. >> you shouldn't criticize this country it is the best country in the world and i've been to quite a few of them and by far we're in the best. just continue with the country things may not go your way at times but work through it and you'll see that -- it is the best one on the planet. lawrence: lieutenant colonel -- >> continue to love it. thank you if your wisdom worth of advice and your service to the country. you definitely paid paved the way for someone like me. thank you, sir.
