this is a fox news alert. i am kevin corke in washington. word in from highland park, illinois that a person of interest in the deadly mass shooting at a july 4th parade is now in custody. robert crimo, captured in lake forest. we do have mike tobin on the scene. he has been following the story throughout the day. as you've probably heard by now six people killed, two dozen others hurt. it all happened as a group of holiday celebrants lined the streets to watch a parade. let's check in with mike for more. hey mike. >> reporter: high there, kevin. he was picked up just 6.1 miles north, the next town north, lake forest, illinois by the eugene. he was spotted by a north chicago police officer. the pursuit was very brief. the manhunt, the run of bobby eugene crimo was not long at all.

he made it to the next town over. police say he is indeed in custody confirming earlier in the day that six people had been killed and more than 24 injured after he opened fire allegedly, according to police, at the 4th of july parade. we will weight for more details from the police as far as the arrest and how it all came down. also looking as we get further into the investigation or the investigation makes a step forward, we can get some more information as far as what kind of weapon was used. you can hear it in the background. whatever weapon he had police described it as a high-powered rifle. you can hear clearly he was able to get off a number of rounds in rapid succession. that will be an interesting detail. the people of highland park now can relax a little bit. the person police believe are responsible for the massacre in the parade is now in police custody. you are looking at video of the honda that the authorities say

they were after. look at the backside according to the fbi poster it should show rear end damage. again confirming that the pitcher of the person you see in the pitcher has been picked up. robert crimo, bobby crime over the third according to police. kevin? >> reporter: before we let you slip out, maybe 15 seconds or so. was this a brief chase or did it take a while to reel him in? >> it sounds like it was a brief chase. he was spotted by north chicago police officer who knew what vehicle he was looking for. how the chase manifested we do not know. we just know it was a brief. he only made it 6.1 miles north of highland park. >> when you consider all the damage, carnage and chaos, really tip your hat to the state and local to say nothing of the federal law enforcement officials. this incredible collaboration which took a few hours, but they managed to go from there to reel
