>> steve: this morning the first victims have been identified. more to come. >> rachel: that's right. and grady trim somebody live from highland park with the latest on this trealgd. grady? >> good morning, steve, rachel and brian. >> this is the police station where police say they brought the gunman after that 8 hour manhunt finally came to an end yesterday. police say that he opened fire from the roof of a downtown business with what they described as a high powered rifle just after 10:00 yesterday morning at highland park's fourth of july parade. families, including children and parents scrambled, ran for their lives as gunshots rang out. >> it was frightening. >> it was very frightening. >> we are okay. >> we are okay, right. >> how many shots did you hear? >> 40, fifth. i don't know. tons, and it went on for a minute or more. >> police say five adults died at the scene.

one other person died at the hospital. the family of nicholas say the grandfather, who was visiting from mexico, is among the dead. at least 30 other people were hurt, ranging in age from 8 to 85 years old. president biden says he was shocked by the independence day celebration that turned to tragedy and vowed to keep fighting to end gun violence in this country. >> each day we're reminded that there is nothing guaranteed about our democracy. nothing guaranteed about our way of life. we have to fight for it. defend it. and earn it by voting. >> police identified the gunman as robert cremo the iii. he grew up in this community. he is in his early 20's and previously posted disturbing videos and posts on social media including one depicting the aftermath of what looked like a school shooting. police spotted him in his car about 15 minutes from the parade

route and took him into custody. they are now believed to be questioning the alleged shooter and have not yet brought charges. police also haven't identified the five other people who were killed in yesterday's horrific attack. guys? >> steve: grady, at what point do they -- if this is their man, he would go from, obviously, person of interest to a suspect in the case. you said no charges have been filed. have they mentioned anything about a motive yet? >> no. they haven't. but, if you look at those posts on social media, they are extremely concerning and would have indicated that he was obviously troubled and, you know, can you never predict that somebody is going to carry something like this out. but obviously he had issues prior to the shooting yesterday. they haven't talked about what specifically was his motive, why he chose the fourth of july parade a tack. why he chose the community he grew up in. and, by the way, police said after they brought him in to

custody yesterday that they were using the term of interest interchangeably with sususpect. there is no reason to believe that there was anybody else involved in the shooting at this point. of course we will await more details today as we wait for a press conference again from the police with the latest information. >> brian: all right. he lived, evidently, close to this site? >> yeah. i would estimate less than a mile from the parade route is where police were searching the home yesterday, including fbi agents and other federal agents. so, very close to where he apparently lived and grew up. he apparently went to high school in this community. so he would have known it very well. in fact, his father apparently ran for mayor in 2019. he lost considerably. but, yeah, this is a family and a alleged gunman who had very close ties to this community. knew it very well.

and for some reason, decided to wreak havoc on it on independence kay. >> steve: he did, indeed. one final question for you, grady, before you go. they say he was able to climb on top of that building up to the roof on unsecured ladder. does that mean this was just he saw the ladder and climbed up it or he took it there? do we have any -- have we connected those dots yet? >> not yet but it seemed like from the press conference police gave yesterday where they described the details of how he got onto the roof on unsecured ladder, it seemed like it was already attached to the building. it's a downtown area. sort of picture any main street in the united states. and that's the type of building it was. so it wouldn't come as a surprise to us if it was a ladder attached to the side of a building that he was able to climb up on or about preplanned and brought his own ladder to

the scene. those are the questions we have. how was he able to carry this out? how was he able to get on to the roof of the building? we are awaiting more details today which hopefully will provide some clarity. you can never explain why somebody would do something like this. >> brian: we will find out. grady, thanks. if you look at some of his videos is he pretty much out of his mind. is he a middle child they say from a family the dad ran for mayor. been a rapper for a while. i guess he had some success in 2018. but, amongst his videos he is essentially harvey ozwald paintings and drawings of him. >> rachel: videos creepy. uncle described him as lonely kid who kept everything to himself. so, clearly a troubled kid from that video. also looks like, i don't know if you saw the video that he made, brian, steve, but it looked to me like there had to be another person shooting that video. so i'm sure they are interviewing that person as well. another person close to this

area, highland park resident warren freed he was at the parade with his wife and 7-year-old twins when the gunman opened fire and we have him with us. welcome to "fox & friends" and thank you so much for joining us. our condolences go out to you and everybody else who was there, of course. tell us how you are feeling today and what you saw. >> sure. we got there about 10 minutes before the parade started. for our family, we have a family of neurological disorders. it was challenging for us to enter the environment because ever the sensory and social judgment. we finally got a spot. we saw the parade. first they had kids on bicycles. then they had the dogs come by. then they had the police wave and they had people from the fire wave -- wave to the kids. everyone had a good rapport. everyone was smiling. everybody was happy.

then there was 20, 30 second delay where everybody left from the fire brigade to the police and waving about to throw out the sweets to the children and then all of the sudden bang, bang, bang. and you kept hearing the shots go off and off and off. it must have lasted about two minutes. and then everyone kept screaming, shooter, run, run, run. so i took my son. my wife took my daughter and we ran away from the scene. we figured of if we ran to our car away from where the shots we could hear ahead of us that we would be safe. so that's the situation we h and one of the things that we would like to understand my kids were asking me last night is the reason why. we are a family, like i said, who have neurological disorders. we understand understand some of the social judgments and frustration. >> we don't care about politics. we don't have a concern about the gun debate. we want to know why someone with a neurological who wasn't right who lived with n. our community didn't get the support and

resources that my children are living right now so they can be as best as possible. >> rachel: so well said. >> steve: your kids are asking you, as the dad. why did somebody try to kill me, dad. what did you tell them? >> i had to tell them that mentally this person did not understand and we don't know exactly fully what he did or didn't understand what's right and what's wrong. this is a person who ha sick mind whod me needed more mention help and support in the community. my kids even said as late as last night they would like to meet him so we could help him so he feels better for himself. we are a condition rooted in empathy. we try to make sure the best comes from a negative situation. i explained to my kids that his mind wasn't correct. he didn't know or maybe did know but he wasn't sure what was the correct way of expressing his anger and his frustration and that's why i'm here to make sure people who have conditions don't feel so frustrated that they turn this way.

>> brian: so, warren, this guy is about -- lived very close to where the parade site was. have you talked to anybody that knows him, knows the family? evidently the dad ran for mayor. is this a known name in the area? >> my wife is actually from the highland park area. she didn't know the name. we found he graduated from high school in 2019. so, he was a graduate of highland park high school, but why? what made him turn so bad? why did he get so angry and so frustrated? what could we have done to help him better? that's the questions we want to as a family understand more why? why does someone do this and what makes them feel so compelled to get so angry and so frustrated. we want to help. >> brian: here you are locked up from the pandemic two years. everything has been canceled. we are finally getting back to normal and then something like this happens. incredible. >> yeah, it's so frustrating even my kids with a sensory were

concerned about hearing fireworks. we had to convince them. show them videos it will be okay. it will be safe. boom this happens. it they are 7 but really 4. they are trying to interpret how bad this was. that's the confusion. >> rachel: i really can't imagine reassuring my kids that everything is going to be okay and then something like this happens. it's mind blowing. talk to me a little bit about the response from the police? how quickly did police come onto the scene to help the injured and clear the area? >> sure. that was the interesting thing. all the police were all congregated together because they were at the parade. this is a very small community. everyone was there. what actually ends up happening is you get police have different locations come in. all the local police and fire brigade were in the area because they just waved to the children. they said hi and the music was going. they were all congregated in the

area. that seemed like that 20-second clay. everyone passed by us the cops and the fire and then the shooting happened. you could hear it come above you. waiting for the cops to come through and then to shoot. then we hear the boom boom boom, nonstop and everybody going crazy. >> steve: you must feel like you are lucky to be alive today. >> i feel lucky and very fortunate. i want to make sure this doesn't happen again and how i can help my local community. a lot of children there and very, very young children. younger than being in school that are going to have psychologic problems because of what they heard and saw. i want to make sure those children are heard and supported. >> brian: a lot of people brought themselves to the hospital. warren, thanks so much for sharing your story. appreciate it. >> rachel: thank you, warren. >> my pleasure. thank you. >> rachel: still ahead as prices surge here at home the white house could turn to china for help. senator tom cotton joins us live on. that was.

>> and we are also learning more details about robert, who police have taken in as a person of interest. his uncle told fox 32 in it 20's aspiring rapper. one of the video included violent images including a man aiming a rifle at another person. spotted by north chicago police in a car he was believed to have been driving ending annual hours' long mountain. >> attempted to negotiate a traffic stop on that subject. that subject did flee. a brief pursuit went on. ultimately they were able to get the subject stopped at wesley and 41 in lake forest. the subject has taken into custody without incident. >> police say they are questioning him but no charges have been filed against him just yet. brian, steve and rachel? >> steve: all right, madeline, thank you so much. this tragedy unraveled in a normally safe suburb to the north of chicago.

our next guest has been tirelessly fighting against violence in the chicago area. he spent 229 days camped out on a roof and he has been with this program many, many times over the last year. >> that's right, pastor corey brooks joins us now. pastor, welcome. and what -- go ahead. >> i was saying thank you so much for having me on. >> rachel: of course. we are so impressed by your time spent on that roof trying to make a statement and then, of course, in the midst of all of that, this shooting happens at a -- you know, event that families and children look forward to someone shooting from the roof top in a very scary situation that initially people thought might have been fireworks. your thoughts on this? >> first of all, my heart goes out to the people of highland park. north of chicago. we know that pain oh so well. having loved ones to be shot and killed. and pain we wish no one would

have to face. we know that pain and that's the reason why i'm on this roof top because i want to continue to bring awareness to the senseless violence in chicago. highland park. other parts of the country that are experiencing this type of violencer single day. and it's unfortunate that in our country we continue to go through this same cycle where we have these shootings. media covers it. we go in to debate. we have visuals. and then we all go back to doing our own lives. but it's not until you go through the pain of situations like this that you start to understand that something needs to be done that actually needs to take place. and that's the reason why i'm on this roof because i want to take action. >> steve: sure. pastor, you have spent 229 days now and nights on that roof there in chicago. in that region, shootings are very, you know, they are very frequent. but, in highland park, which is about 20 miles north of chicago, this was a place where this sort

of thing never happens. this was a town where michael jordan lived when he played for the bulls. it's where john hughes, the director made ferris bueller's day off and 16 candles. this goes to show you this can happen anywhere. >> one of the top 100 wealthiest praises. people with a lot of education and a lot of wealth. what we need to understand is that violence does not discriminate and i tell people all the time when you don't deal with place like chicago. it spreads like cancer. i know that pain as well. that is an be issue we need to deal with all across the country. specifically in areas where we are so that these issues do not continue to spread throughout america. that's exactly what we are seeing in highland park violence

weighs rolling back chinese tariffs put there by donald trump. tom cotton sits on the joint economic committee. he joins us now to react. senator, evidently the biden administration is split on doing this. yellen and romando want them taken out. trade secretary don't. where do you stand? >> well, brian, this is just another example of joe biden blaming inflation on anyone but himself. we have this these tariffs in place for three or even four years. we didn't have inflation when it started. he is blaming vladimir putin's war on ukraine for inflation. we had inflation well before vladimir putin invaded ukraine. the problem here is joe biden's policies. and especially his energy policy. because the cost of gas lien and electricity drives the cost of everything else. whether you buy it at a grocery store or walmart or anywhere else, it took energy to make it, it took gas to drive it there, it takes energy and electricity to keep it there. if we would unlock the american oil and gas and coal sector and

allow them to produce energy we need, that would bring down the prices of everything. what does joe biden do? he would rather go to iran and venezuela and beg them to produce more. joe biden needs to look at the america's white house in he wants to find the problem and perhaps the solution for the situation. >> brian: making deals. why would you give something up? if you are going to give up tariffs. politically or practically. you don't give something up for no reason to believe to get nothing back in return excepts for an gering the american business and labor unions. they don't want the tariffsist willed.sist lifted. >> brian, this is the theory of the tariffs in the trump administration that china had been cheating and stealing and taking our jobs and our factories for decades because they were using unfair trade practices and that with tariffs, you get leverages over them. apparently the biden administration, because of their own tool foolish policies are now as you say about to give all

questioning after 8-hour manhunt finally came to an end yesterday evening. that's after police say the gunman opened fire from the roof of a downtown business in highland park just after 10:00 yesterday morning at the town's fourth of july parade. they say he gained access to that roof top, got up there via an unsecured ladder that we learned was attached to the building. families ran for their lives as gunshots rang out. >> everyone is pretty shaken. i think, you know, you are used to hearing about this stuff elsewhere but it definitely hits a lot harder when, you know, it's not only your hometown but it's also, like right in front of you. and definitely some moments today that our family will never forget. >> police say five adults died at the scene. one other person died at the hospital. the family of nicholas says the grandfather who was visiting them from mexico is among those

killed. at least 30 other people, police say, were hurt. the victims range in age from 8 years old to 85. illinois governor j.b. pritzker came to highland park yesterday hours after the shooting to speak to the press. that she said was the right time to talk about gun control in the united states. >> our founders carried muskets, not assault weapons. and i don't think a single one of them would have said that you have a constitutional right to an assault weapon with a high capacity magazine. police identified this man robert crean know iii. he went by bobby and grew up in this highland community. he is in early 20's and posted extremely concerning and disturbing videos and pictures on social media. including one that looked like it depicted the aftermath of a school shooting. police spotted him in his car

yesterday around 6:30. about 15 minutes from the parade route. that's when they surrounded him and took him into custody. they brought him here for questioning. but they haven't charged him just yet. police also haven't identified the five other people who were killed in yesterday's massacre. guys? >> brian: unbelievable. and what we know about this guy is he is known as a wake the rapper. moderate success worth about $100,000. he had a pretty active social media life it seems, grady. we are only getting a glimpse. we are allowed to see because i'm sure they were looking at that before they released his name. >> yeah. and as the hours went by yesterday, those videos were on social media and slowly removed as the days went on. clearly the social media companies realized yesterday that those videos should not have been posted and they were potential red flags that he

obviously was a deeply troubled individual who could potentially do damage and that's what he ended up doing yesterday. >> steve: they always taking them down after the shooting has stopped. >> rachel: they did say he was known to police. >> steve: i was going to ask you that question. grady, he is being described by the "chicago sun times" and others as he was known to law enforcement. >> why was he known to law enforcement? >> i'm going to have to look into that. because i hemorrhagely haven't seen anything about a criminal record of his. he was in his early 20's. not someone who who has lived a long life and would have had a lengthy rap sheet. these early days and hours after the shooting. i am going to look into that. when we have a press conference, as soon as the press conference happens. those of course will be questions that we will ask here this morning. >> steve: sure. one other thing. they described it as a high powered rifle. they haven't gone into the

caliber. even though they they had it at the scene. >> yeah. that's all they would tell us is that it was a high powered rifle. they wouldn't go into the caliber of the bullet or what type of weapon it was. other than those were high powered rifle. , which by the way. means a lot of different things. people use those words, high powered rifle to describe a range of different types of weapons so, again, another question that we're going to have. we have a lot of them still. as do police as they question. suspect here this morning. >> steve: all right. grady, thank you very much for the live report. >> brian: horrific music video. >> rachel: i saw the video. it's so disturbing. it is like takes place in a classroom setting. clearly somebody else was filming it. so he must have people involved with him in that filming of that. there is bullets on the floor. and, you know, in the -- he is like throwing bullets on the floor in the video. >> steve: the screen goes black. >> rachel: there is creepy

music. he looks disturbed. his uncle's name is paul. he describes his nephew as lonely, quiet, keeps everything to himself. again, this is just a second parade in the last, what like six months that we have seen violence in the waukesha, wisconsin parade, a car was used to mow counsel people and kill people. in this case, a weapon. a gun. >> brian: this is one commonality between waukesha, buffalo, this guy and to a degree uvalde, people around him, you are going to see people around him yeah, he kind of scared me. he was worrying me. police knew of him. but they don't stop him before he kills. the family somehow thinks by letting him out into society is he going to be okay. buffalo, that didn't work. uvalde that didn't work. certainly didn't work in waukesha. ends up plowing people in the middle of the street just walking again in a parade. and then this guy. just take one look at him. you are going to tell me is okay with a face and neck tattoo,

looks like he hasn't seen the light of day since 1941. and he is walking amongst us drawings of lee harvey ozwald. a video like that on social media. if that's your kid, do you let him out amongst the masses? >> steve: speaking of kids there were a lot of kids and adults and families and law enforcement at the parade yesterday when he started shooting at 10:15 a man by the named of warren freed went with his wife and two children there. special needs kids. he explained what they would see when they got there. and then they got there and, you know, they didn't see this happening. nobody did. he describes what it was like and then the questions his children have asked him every night since last night and since then about, daddy, why did somebody try to kill us? his answer? here's is warren freed. >> all of the sudden bang, bang, bang. you kept hearing the shots go off and off and off.

it must have lasted about two minutes. and then everyone kept screaming, shooter, run. run. run. one of the things that we would like to understand my kids are asking me last night is the reason why. we're a family, like i said, woo who have neurological disorders. why understand son-in-law of the social judgments and frustration. we don't care about politics. we don't have a concern about the gun debate. we want to know why someone with a neurological who wasn't right who lived in our community didn't get the support and resources that my children are getting right now. >> rachel: he brings up such great point. because, again, the obvious conversation, you know that we are hearing now from the white house and others is guns, guns, guns. as i mentioned in waukesha it was a car that was used. he is bringing up the fact that we need to talk about mental health. his own children have sensory issues. they actually had to prepare their kids to go to the parade because, of course, there is all these sirens and sounds and then, of course, when this happened, you can imagine how this sets back those children.

and all -- everybody who was there. i mean, this is traumatizing. parades we joke on the weekend show there is a big debate between pete, will and i about parades, fun or not, pete and i, yes, fun, will doesn't love parades. but the point is parades are a part of american civic culture. it's part of a community. every, you know, year people from the community gather and for this to become an event that people actually have to think twice about attending. >> steve: that's sad. >> rachel: it's so sad and really terrible thing. i think mental health as brian brought up. you have to look at this kid to go he doesn't look well, and even his relatives saying, you know, he was lonely. he didn't seem well. >> brian: yeah. we are about to get a cascade of information, i'm sure, on him and also, i doubt in a school district like that. affluent glare like this. he wasn't offered some type of

psychological or social services that comes and somehow teachers seem to have missed the signals that this guy seems to be a walking billboard of i am nothing but trouble especially if you see what his social media presence is. and also, you look at the lyrics of some of his songs that he downloaded, you have got to be kidding me. the middle child of italian family how he describes himself. his dad ran from mayor vehemently unsuccessfully. there is him -- there is a picture of him evidently wrapped in a trump flag. also like joe biden photos. also pictures of wearing fbi hats. also drawings of lee harvey oswald. who draws lee harvey oswald. >> steve: look at that downtown area. it's like a picture out of a norman rockwell painting. this is where michael jordan lived when he played with the bulls. the movie director john hughes made ferris bueller in that town. it just goes to show you even though the town looks perfect, this can now happen anywhere.

>> rachel: there is clearly an epidemic of loneliness, of hopelessness there is a social media component to this that we have to look at with young men. i will say people have said, you know, there was a reporting that he was a rapper. so the rap community says it has nothing to do with us. he went to a trump rally. the trump people saying it has nothing to do with us. he wore antifa type mask. the left saying nothing to do with this. we are missings the point there is loneliness and hopelessness and mental illness there aren't enough resources as that man warren freed talked about. >> brian: right have. a good cry. don't grab a gun and go get some professional help. it's up to you and your family. if you have somebody who is disturbed in your house, do not leave him armed and dangerous amongst the masses. 1 minutes across the hour. on another note when it comes to world affairs our number one enemy is china. at this hour after extensive

oil from the strategic petroleum reserve right up to the midterms, that sounded to people in the white house like this is going to really help. the price of oil actually went up after that. this is another one of those things where he has to seem like he is doing something, so i'm going to pull the plug on those darn chinese tariffs. they won't do much to change how much you are paying for gasoline or meat or anything else. >> rachel: very obvious what he has to do. he has to unleash american energy and make us energy independent once again which we were just a couple years ago. you spoke with senator tom cotton who talked about how joe biden has never taken the threat of china seriously or maybe he is compromised. i don't know. we have quote the laptop so we can see. here is senator tom cotton talking about it. for decades he has not seen them

going to a location they were holding the press conferences and doing those and giving those updates. hopefully we will get one soon. we don't know what police have to update us on this morning because they were at that suspect in the custody yesterday after the eight hour manhunt. today that we are are learning the names of the people killed. two of the six have been identified. only show you jackie sometime, she was a preschool teacher at a local synagogue. the synagogue confirmed her death on their website bid the family of nicholas toledo also identified the grandfather who was visiting from mexico as a victim. at least 30 other people were hurt ranging in age from eight to 85 years old. police have the gunman opened fire on the crowd below from the roof of a downtown business just after 8:00 yesterday morning in highland park's fourth of july parade. they say he climbed an unsecured ladder that was attached to a

building. witnesses describe running for their lives as gunshots rang out. >> all of a sudden bang, bang and you could hear the shots go off and off. it must've lasted about 2 minutes. everybody kept screaming and everybody kept yelling shooter, ron. >> president biden said he was shocked by the independence day celebration the turn to tragedy and vowed to keep fighting to unkind violence in this country. >> each day we are reminded there's nothing guaranteed about our democracy. nothing guaranteed about our way of life. we have to fight for it. defendant. and earn it, by voting. >> after the massacre at the parade that massive manhunt ensued with the help of local and federal law enforcement agencies and end officer with

jewish population. northern suburbs have seen a rash of anti-semitic sentiment in recent months including on holocausts. we don't know the motive yet that they've mentioned and this could could be a guy on the roof randomly shooting something. >> it is absolutely possible. please haven't discussed the motive so we don't have that from official sources. this is an affluent suburb. yet there are a lot of jewish people that live in this community. they are concerned that they were attacked because of the jewish population that lived here. we don't have confirmed from police but that's something we are hearing from people who live here or who have family members who live here. perhaps they were targeted because their jewish faith.

>> jackie sondheim is one of the victims. she is jewish, a local member of the devoted jewish congregation that's remembered for kindness and dedication by the north shore congregation of israel, the synagogue she was at the come out their website appreciate it. from what you know 22-year-old, he looked satanic, he has a face tattoo, he has videos of him shooting up a school. we see all this and we wonder from what we know right now should something have been done? >> good morning, brian. there were warning signs in this one just looking at the guy. we are hearing about the videos he's posted that social media could take down after-the-fact, but where is the warning before hand? where is the intervention by family and friends? this is the kind of thing that we see in advance.

what are we doing before something tragic happens? >> john, what do people do? what's the you of a relative who is showing some of these signs and these are pretty extreme. these family members known by the way they said -- the uncle said he was lonely and isolated, he kept to himself. but just looking at the very disturbing -- it shows his music video was like a school shooting scenario. these are some pretty good signs. which of that family do? >> well, it's not just a family it's other people i come in contact with them. first of all if you are over 18 and it's very to for somebody to get any mental health treatment of this country. we have to have that conversation but aside from that if you think there's any form of threat contact the police, contact the fbi. it doesn't mean he will be arrested and taken out of the

straight, but you never know with the intervention of being contacted by law enforcement that might be enough to wake-up call or deter him from this criminal act. >> sure. when you think about what we know for sure we know the sky, apparently had a long gone on a rough. you don't just walk to a parade and walk out on main street with a long gone, a high-power rifle is how the forces describing it. he knew there was an unsecured ladder that adds premeditation to this diabolical act. >> there was planning. he knew a location to go to. i wouldn't be surprised if over the course of the police and fbi organizationally found out he rehearsed us, climbed up on the roof previously, look for the vantage points. but also this creates another warning sign for us in the future. from now on when we have parades are we going to be looking at

rooftops? >> it's ruining this beautiful civic thing that every little town in community does. use i would have been in waukesha, wisconsin, they used a card to mow people down. in this case going up and that ladder i guess we'll have to get more information about why that letter was there. >> to your point about going forward if they have a parade you've got to worry about locking down the rough. i'm just thinking about something that's been reported. apparently this guy in the social media page at some sort of lee harvey oswald imagery, this is just like the texas book depository from a high vantage point shooting down the people. >> you're putting it together for law enforcement essentially. this is what we seek him discussed at for muscular's in the past, we seen a number of cases, they try to imitate them, anybody who's looking at this sort of stuff first of all that's not healthy behavior.
