encounter and what you will encounter and people are looking to hurt you, are you going to make it home to your loved ones that night and are you going to be able to save these people you're trying to protect? so many levels of stress come into play with this, a low levels of stress, delayed response for first responders, it doesn't manifest itself for maybe months or years before terms into ptsd. eric: what types of stories are you hearing? >> the officers, if it's untreated, they begin to isolate, disconnect from their families because nobody understands what they are going through except their fellow officers and before you know it, they are isolating away from family, spending more time alone and only identify with other officers and then they don't know how to cope so they are maybe drinking more than they should, go to sleep at night, they might start with over-the-counter medications which turns into something worse

including addiction. eric: we have some statistics, this comes from kaiser permanente, 57% of first responders admit they have negative repercussions, they feel they will have negative repercussions if they sought help. 40% say they are afraid they would be demoted or fired if they get help. seven in ten, 70% seek treatment more willingly if someone in the organization speak out about it, 80% say they would be encouraged if a colleague spoke up. does that surprise you? there is a resistance, afraid to come forward to say that i've gone through on the job is affecting me and i need help and how is lakeview addressing it? >> i saw it being on the job, you are taught not to talk about it, push it down and suppress it. just do your job and don't talk about it. you want to be looked at as

being weak among their peers so we are getting officers to open up more and bring more attention to the fact that you have to address the problem and talk about it, talk about peers and the programs out there and lakeview is addressing that by the cognitive problems they are having and treatment they can offer, individual therapies and group therapies and outpatient type things and once you are back to your duties and fit for duty to go back, you continue to heal and treat yourself accordingly. eric: a life inside the real sopranos, we've interviewed you for officers but you also talk about the effects of being under cover, the relationship with your wife and your family, can you tell us about that? if there's a first responder watching going through what you went through.

>> if we go through it, i personally went through my entire career, if i received an injury on the job and had surgery, our family sees that and lives with you and our kids see it and we don't realize we are bringing the job home to our family and we are not addressing what needs to be addressed. we are abandoning our loved ones in a sense because it's the most important thing and yes you are not able to then provide for your family. i was caught up but that and i write about it in my book and i was undercover and doing my job and doing my duties and neglecting those who i love. eric: we think law enforcement officers across the country for this job him anyone feeling that, lakeview health is the organization. thank you for sharing and opening up and for doing what you are doing right now to help
