aishah hosnie. hey, aishah. aishah: the president has returned home without any solutions and facing criticism from members of his own party for what is happening here and abroad. first off, let's start with the president's build back better agenda in carves thanks to joe manchin, senator tanking any hopes of funding for energy in the package. progressives are mad about this. manchin is willing to pass a smaller package to lower medicines and telling the senate to take the deal and leave climate and energy to him. new fox news poll biden's approval rating at dismal 30%, 25% on inflation.

this as the price of groceries, household items and airfare are all significantly up from just a year ago. >> this year is going to be a referendum on biden. it's pretty simple. midterms are referendum on the president's strategies which are horrible. so this is not going to be about '24. it's going to be about '22. aishah: u.s. intelligence rather holds responsible for the murder of journalist jamal khashoggi. most notably congressman adam schiff was critical of the fist bump but here is senator bernie sanders just this morning. >> you have the leader of that country who was involved with the murder of a washington post journalist. i don't think that that type of government should be rewarded with a visit by the president of the united states. aishah: this comes as the saudis

rebounded. we will bring former intelligence officer at hoover institution. john, thanks for joining me. look, you have the u.s. and europe reeling from inflation while russia withstands heavy sanctions. is russia's economy not suffering, what gives? >> no, russia's economy is suffering and will continue to suffer over a period of time. yes, the rubel has held strong but due to capital controls and inflation by russia central bank. the russian rubel is not a tradeable currency right now. you are seeing unemployment rise in russia, russia isn't able to import a lot of goods it needs for manufacturing sector and one of the points structurally going forward enormous brain drain russia's best and brightest diaspora to united states and

biden administration. putin gas hike is ridiculous. what's driving is increase of energy prices as a result of not america -- america's reduced energy production. the trillions of dollars spent chasing the same number of goods during the pandemic, for example, in the so-called infrastructure bill, arthel, there's a section in there which actually prohibits the introduction of robotics and automation at american ports. that's in the so-called infrastructure bill. so the administration is doing everything that it can to make inflation worse while they are complaining about it. in the infrastructure bill it's all environmental project. it's not about really modernizing america's ports and relieving the choke points. arthel: so there's no -- >> there's plenty they can do. arthel: okay, i'm sure there's more to be done because clearly we are still in this

9:37 am
>> because it has a lot of mutations and remember the vaccines target the spike proteins and the mutations or changes in the spike protein. you know what's not being said if you have a recent vaccine like a booster or recently infected with one of the most recent sub variants of omicron you have a layer of protection and that's why you saw the death count you said 235 deaths not nearly what we saw with delta. arthel: because the variant is infecting those who already had covid or those with two, three, even four vaccinations, most of those cases are mild so you have a lot of people riding it out with now prescription med, i ask you, a, is it a good idea to ride it out or b, are their vitamins that you can take or over the counter meds like aspirin, for example? >> arthel, you always asked me the great questions.
9:38 am
here is the deal on, this i like vitamin d. i think you should make sure that you consider vitamin supplement. i think a baby aspirin is a good idea if you're not on blood thinners because it's high risk of bleeding but most importantly i prescribe a lot of paxlovic and i probably prescribe more of it than is actually recommended because i look -- i can't always tell who is going to have a severe case. so i look for people in high-risk groups, people with underlying diseases and people who are obese and elderly and i give more often than that. arthel: that's the thing, you don't know how your body is going to react to covid if you get it and speaking of paxlovic works for some and not for others, what's your take on why that is the case? doctor: i think it works for most people but in a lot of cases the immune system gets geared up late and so you get a rebound effect. we are seeing a lot more rebound in strains like the ba5 that

consistent fatigue and breathing and focusing, all of that is on the radar right now and we are studying closely and that's the legacy of this pandemic. arthel: how do you treat that, though, this fatigue from long covid? doctor: well, it's hard to treat it. you treat it with retaining and you treat it with more time off and you treat it with getting people exercising, that helps a lot, by the way, and you also have rehab for breathing issues but we want to avoid that. if you get it we want to treat it with rehabilitation. arthel: dr. mark seigel. arthel: transportation secretary pete buttigieg points out that if you do, you will never have to worry about high gas prices again. the critics, though, are pointing out that electric vehicles typically cost more than hybrids or gas-powered cars. the supporters say electric cars can pay off in the long run. alexandria hoff live in
