years. a former somerset -- resigned in 2021 over the brighton .5. good morning to you both. holly, you say that the identity of this town, the town of somerset was really wrapped up in this power plant. what economically happen to the community after it shutdown? >> it was such a difficult thing, both emotionally and economically. four years before my time, people were in denial that the plant was shut down comments when i came on board, we all kind of knew that it was looming and when it became a reality, people, especially workers there, everyone was grappling with where are we going to work now? where is somerset going to get half of its revenue? that power plant made up at least about 40% of the general fund for the town, so we were looking to bring in more economic development, we had to shift a lot of things around and luckily, we survived rock

bottom, but the fact that it was even purchase to begin with, we got very lucky. moving forward. >> carley: we just watched a video of the two towers being demolished in 2019. ted, you worked there for 38 years. did you feel when it shutdown? >> we were very disappointed and in denial for a while. the writing was on the wall. it was purely economic. coal just couldn't compete and -- >> carley: holly, you clearly care so much about your community. you actually resigned from the position because of this fight over the power plant. can you tell us what happened there? >> sure. it wasn't necessarily over the planned closure. i really wanted to get my hands dirty, that's one of the main reason why i ran in the first place, but several years later, about a year ago from now in

april, at that point, it had been a good year and a half of some people coming out of the woodwork and using the plant as a platform to get politically involved, and it really drummed up a lot of negativity. at the time, the trump administration had imposed a significant delay on any offshore wind projects, power projects, so that directly affected is and what was to come. we have done a press release, there was a huge press release about -- similar to what we talked about yesterday. it's finally happening now. the fact that it was delayed. the company had to bring in commodities to survive while they waited for a review of their new win partnership, and so that took a good year and the neighbors set up a good fight for -- because they did not like that commodities were being

brought in, currently at the time, it was a scrap staging ground, and there were a lot -- there's been a ton of misinformation around that, in so that caused a huge fight and a lot of the people that were running for office were using that of the platform, and in my opinion, there were a lot of unethical things going on. i didn't want any part of it. >> carley: ted, what was once a coal-fired power plant is going to be turned into a factory to make cables for wind farms to connect those wind farms to the power grid. how does the town feel moving forward about this transition? >> well, i think it's mixed. they do need taxable income, and it's a great organization. it will help a lot. it's a perfect place.

for you, now two years later, what's it like knowing that communities across the country? >> communities are suffering. these corporations that are funding this organization would actually just wake up and realize that you know what? you're doing more harm than good. a lot of these companies actually going to these communities which are actually suffering and go to these community-based programs that are actually doing something for our -- exactly, these community-based organizations that are actually doing stuff for our communities, there are actually there in the forefront of trying to help these people better themselves and better the lives. actually basically funding their real estate portfolio, if anything. they're not doing anything for our communities, absolutely not. >> todd: there is a great point. when you see the literally making your job harder,

deadlier, you ask yourself why am i doing this? >> well, i did this and i did it for 27 years and i did it because of the love of my community and wanting to help. i can always try to change that, i can always try to change their outlook of the way people think about us, and i can try to actually tell them these people are sending the wrong message. they are actually people that care. icap. there is many police officers just like me. jason rivera, for example, his entire life, wanted to become a new york city police officer to help his community and he did what the city wanted. we have black lives matter pushing this agenda and look what happens. >> carley: his widow, the one who we quoted in the intro although also, she is also the one who spoke out at her husband

of virginia, let me add in light of school board races across the country where the republican has won resoundingly, white of democratic change course and stop politicizing education? >> they should stop, but the thing is there in a catch-22 situation. the democrats have over relied on the teachers union. randi weingarten, we just talked about, campaign contributions, 99% of those contributions have got a democrat as opposed republicans in 2022 so far according to the open secret campaign contribution website. the democrats have to make a decision now, and republicans, they're smart, they'll make the democrats make the decision. republicans are in a win-win situation on the issue of education, and look, this polling is a change. even though it was only about three percentage point advantage over, the republicans seem to be close to democrats on education, this is a seismic shift in what we've seen for decades. democrats have always been a pop, for a long time at least, and on the issue of education.

to even be close would be an important story, but for republicans to be up in two polls over the past couple of months, some left-leaning sources on the education, this doesn't look good for democrats in the mid-term, and look, if the republicans wanted to give a gift to the democrats, they want to talk about education. they won't touch it, like they've done for far too long. at the smart, the lean into this just like we saw with glenn youngkin in virginia who cracked the code. this is the blueprint for success going forward. education, freedom, parental rights in education, school tries, these are all political winner is on at the same time, coming out against parental rights in education after the past two years in particular is becoming a form of political suicide. hopefully, politicians from all parties pick the side of the parents. >> todd: could this be the mid-term elections that marks the beginning of the end for the teachers union monopoly over our kids education? we will see in a few short months. gori, thank you very much.

think there are no longer a crime in your great city. the city where derek jeter was born, i should add. accosting, molesting a roughly touching any other person, selling pictures of books to minors, being under the influence of controlled substances or drugs in public and engaging in fraudulent claims to obtain money. there are literally changing years and years of what has become accepted law. what good could possibly come out of those changes as well? >> yeah, there were so many different changes that we didn't even realize were involved in the voting the other night. that's really -- we have a lot of compassion, believe me. in my coffee shop, my chocolate shop, we let people drink coffee when we know it's cold out there. anyone can come in for coffee. sometimes, we -- i bought shoes for people that were homeless,

that are working with no shoes. there are so many different things, but it's not just the part of it. the part that really upsetting to us is people are putting other people, people following some of our employees to their cars to, asking them for money and then they get to the car and still not giving the money. we had one guy. we have to employ people and we have to make these people stay with us, and -- >> todd: and you're trying to attract customer, so that having to have a chilling effect not only on employees but what customer is going to want to compare shop where you have to dodge desiccation in your dish and bake at horrible. thank you join with us, it's a tough topic.
