fist and yelling coming "you're done." and one of the men on the scene in a help the congressman and here to tell us what happened at. >> carley: we begin with ashley strohmier with the breaking details, ashley, good morning. >> the gubernatorial candidate and congressman lee zeldin getting attacked at a campaign stop last night. now, you can see a man jump on stage while lee zeldin was speaking. the police say he approaches and start swinging his sharp weapon towards his neck. that terrifying moment was caught on camera, watch. >> there is only one option... >> "you're done." speak with the monroe county sheriff's offer say the suspect man was taken into custody and charged with attempted assault. zeldin was able to grab the man and hold him off until others can jump in and tackle him, the

attendees who stepped up to quickly assist and the law enforcement officers who quickly responded. as resolute as ever to do my part to make new york safe again. the suspect will likely bit back on the street exactly. the suspect was released on his own recognizance. in the meantime, zeldin's fall and kathy hochul tweeting, she tweeted, "relieved to hear that congressman zeldin was not injured and the suspect is in custody. i condemn this violent behavior in the strongest terms possible. there is no place in new york." but the new york republicans pointing for the rally scheduled hours ahead of that attack. the state committee chairman nick langworthy responding "is not kathy hochul that manned the flames to the rally schedule.

this is unacceptable for anyone let alone a sitting governor." i spoke with cody crippen who said the rally was shaken to the core, listen. >> everybody is kind of a little shocked. you know, just surprised to see it happen. so i mean, i think it changed the mood from just kind of excited to, you know kind of to a panic and chaotic scene in a matter of seconds, i would say. >> okay kies come a lot to impact, back to you. >> carley: joe to militate down the suspect and joins us now. this could be so much worse. tell us what you saw and how you responded. >> good morning, so about 15 minutes into the congressman's speech, i saw a

guy climbing up the side of the stage, try to get joe there and somebody behind the stage. and we saw him as he tried to approach congressman zeldin. he stepped onto the stage, saw the attacker, try to get into his face and i could see what looked like a razor knife of some sort as the congressman saw him block that swing. and has he attempted another swing, i tackled the attacker from the back and slammed him to the ground where several of us were able to restrain him and get the weapon away from him and eventually turn him over to the police when they arrived. >> todd: joe, you are in combat and thank you for your service. you were not there for security but there for your role. but did you see anything in the audience or this man act in a certain way?

was there something there that could have been seen and prevent this from happening? >> i just want to be clear, i was not there in my capacity for the vet side. i'm running for the new york assembly. and the vets were completely nonpartisan, of course. i saw him stumbling towards the stage shortly before he climbed the stage. i really couldn't tell what he was doing, but he stopped up the stage and was standing there to watch. until he actually climbed up on the stage, we had no warning of his intentions. >> carley: we are learning this morning the suspect was immediately released on his own recognizance. that outcome happened after the speech that lee zeldin was making about bail reform and how there are a lot of more victims than there should be right now because of those very new york laws. how do you feel about him being released? >> i was just learning about

that as i hear it a couple of minutes before coming on. mixed emotions here, but primarily enraged but also concerned. it was clear to spend some time with the gentleman on the ground last night, and he was not in a good place. very concerned. very much in line with the policies in new york state that have led to crime, violent crime. very concerned right now. >> todd: you know, joe, your reaction, you said you wanted to reach out. you believe this man is a veteran himself. you spent some time talking to him. in doing so, you think he suffered from mental health crisis. and it seems like your sentiment to him, you will pay for this. but when it's done, let me know if we can get you the services you need to.

and do you still feel that way? >> i did not get a chance to talk to congressman zeldin. they took us over to get her perspective of what had occurred. but as the attacker was being handcuffed by the police, he said that he had fought in the iraq war. at that point, i noticed he was wearing clothing that indicated he was a veteran as well. as a veterans advocate, it just struck me, and yes, i told him he would have to deal with what he has done. once he was through that, i would make sure he gets the services that he needs. it indicated to me that he was having a mental crisis. >> carley: we are learning that congressman seldom blocked him, you tackled him and zeldin 20 year veteran grabbed the weapon out of his hand. some people had zip ties apparently and tied his hands behind his back. where were the police when all of this was taking place?

>> there were no police on-site during the rally itself. it probably took four or 5 minutes for the police to get there, which was a good response time considering where we are located. but yes, no stone was outstanding. the gubernatorial candidate retired nypd. and i was behind him hugging, bear hugging him and holding his headphones down because i knew e still had the weapon. i was working to get the weapon out of his hands and i knew i was in good shape. >> todd: coaching ellie you did exactly what i expected a marine to do. and i think it turned out as well as it could for the actions of that day. >> carley: best of luck in the new york assembly race. >> think you come appreciated. i want to send my condolences and prayers to the fallen police officer shot and killed last

what kind of arrest warrants are we talking about? for people that are here in the country illegally? could they be for violent crimes, drunk driving or something more serious like that? >> so, the only thing that we give them is when we apprehend somebody, we issue what is a notice to appear. that will be a wa. a warrant for arrest, notice to appear at. that is only thing it will show. it will not show whether they have a criminal past. we will not show anything on there except they were apprehended by immigration officers within gave them a notice to appear with a warrant for arrest. that is all it is. >> carley: speaking of traveling, new york city mayor matt that influx of new york city immigrants and he's blaming texas and arizona for that. but it looks like the biden administration actually flying illegal immigrants to new york and that's affecting the city. could this be a good thing if

democrat governor start getting more angry about illegal immigration? could that be the motivation that president biden needs to actually address the issue? >> well, it will be a good thing if the mainstream media will cover it, honestly. again, just like the w nta are not showing the criminal records, eric adams is not telling the truth. so the mainstream media will only listen to him rather than taken to the actual story and look at what is going on, no, the administration is going to ignore it because the american people aren't getting the truth. until the american people get the truth and until they are willing to push back against the a elected officials, they will act like they are acting. they would have hit the ceiling on illegal immigration three months back into the administrations tenure. and we just didn't. we don't think there is a silly right now. we break record day over day, week over week, month over month and this administration doesn't

care. speed to one of the things the biden administration did when it comes to illegal immigration, the only ones to be deported are those that pose a serious threat. so just being here illegally isn't reason enough to be deported. the supreme court just rejected that policy, which, how do you feel about that station? what does this mean moving forward? >> it is a great decision by the supreme court. they said they will hear it again. i believe in december. the problem with that, the administration will order ice not to go after certain officials. lawsuits can be filed. but those lawsuits take forever to go through. and even if the supreme court or district court and the biden administration can't do anything, you can't hold a sitting president in contempt of a court order. that is a problem we are seeing. they don't care. they continue to ignore the branch of government and that is not how the country is supposed
