1:26 pm
that many have run and lost two of their primary or the general stage. vice president pence has that big probably the much bigger one is that he is really alienating these very two large constituencies and the republican party. there is the diehard trump sector, that really does not like mike spence for the self possibly the 2020 election was stolen. and then there are the never trump republicans who resent mike pence in the first place for joining the ticket. so what you have left over is a very, very small sliver of the party. it is really tough to win that way for. >> former vice president out in arizona reported campaigning here is what he tweeted. trying to look to the future and i will ask is this enough question what can he move the ball this is what he tweeted, the republican party allowed itself to be consumed by yesterday's grievances we will lose. but if we come together, keep her eye on the future we won't

1:28 pm
but there are a lot of options for. >> just saw the reaction governor desantis had in his speech in tampa. what are his strengths? do you think running for the nomination? >> well, what some people say as he has a trump style without the controversy. but i prefer to look at the polling numbers. he is a very, very strong in those. you have to remember he is not even launched a campaign yet. so in these polls that we are talking about, this is just among the people who know who these candidates are. of course of trump has a huge advantage. he is the current head of the republican party as the last republican and last president. so once candidates like desantis have a chance to announce to get their message out, we should probably only expect that support to grow. eric: in terms of that support what do they have to do to try to contrast each other from each other? how did they do that while tried
1:29 pm
to envision a new bold vision for the future? >> think he's done it a little bit in these speeches. he seems to toe with this middle line, criticized biden as much as possible but not go to the point of personally insulting biden were getting his interpersonal. maybe that is the playbook. also, it desantis policies if you look at polls that talk about education policies for instance gives the parents more control over school curriculum and what they learn for those of policies are widely popular if you do not attach desantis to it or depending on how you frame these policies. so he seems to be sort of getting these issues that have widespread popularity. but not going so far for instance to say school should ban books. he is getting a little bit of heat for, for some the schools in florida. or that teachers should be prosecuted if they talk about race relations.
1:30 pm
that is a very tough line to toe. you are right, there's plenty of time left. there's plenty of time to make mistakes to progress finally you have written a book called star power american democracy in the age of the celebrity candidate. i pick up one point you've just said but ron desantis is an income but he's in office now. he has inability to react to issues and enact them that mike pence does not have. >> that's a great point for. >> with that give desantis a potential edge? >> yes i think it does absolutely. he has made headlines by criticizing biden and avoiding criticizing trump. but if he is on a debate stage with final trump and mike pence what seems to be growing more likely every day, he is going to have no choice but to step away from just bashing biden and to attack these other republican presidential hopefuls perhaps.
