heat as we are in this heat wave in new york city but so far rockaway beach here in queens has closed three times due to shark sightings. even with all of that happening people say they're still ready to take a dip. take a look this is earlier today out at the beach in queens reading see how busy it is. yesterday parks department temporary close this beach down. not only swimmers into the water after several shark sightings but reopen today. the closure came one of the hottest days this summer as thousands of new yorkers hit the beaches during this ongoing heatwave. so we talk to some locals out here at the beach today who tell me they are not shocked or scared but they've heard about this quite a few times recently. one well that we talked to actually solve the shark yesterday before it lifeguard cleared everybody out. >> we were here, they've heard him blow the whistle i said he wasn't too far and i looked i literally saw the short going that way. there were two sharks. then we saw the defendant strolling and strolling.

i think he is totally committed to the radical left. i mean, we can just take place from the previous demonstration and run on those. the state and mexico policy per just enforce the law. get back to loathing the border while they halted construction on. stop catch and release. i mean they know what to do but they are willfully and intentionally not doing it. this president has advocate's chief job which is to keep americans safe. he has been derelict in upholding the laws of the land. so it falls on the states and the states have a constitutional right of self-defense. so they're going have to fill the gap on behalf of their citizens and protect their citizens. sue for the administration said they're spending billions of dollars on this. at the same time taking a page from the secretary, what can washington do? can congress change the drug laws question wrecked it's legal

for some bishop of the board and claim asylum. as that has been reported that's part of the playbook from the cartels. should some these laws be changed to make it more difficult for these issues? >> will certainly congress has a role here and we should button up the immigration laws per there are loopholes being exploited. there are magnets that draw people here. but where there is a will there is a way. that was demonstrated by president trump who, under his leadership, saw illegal crossings dropped 70%. so yes, congress can work on this. i have little hope that we will fix it over the next two years. when republicans get the majority we can use oversight. we can use power of the put purse to put pressure on this president and we will. i think our state leaders have to step up and exercise their article one section ten powers when there is an invasion.

close to 3000 cases confirmed. among them the first two cases in children diagnosed last week in california and washington d.c. be joining us now doctor and epidemiology professor at ucla and expert on monkeypox. joe as you know, they said we understand too little about monkeypox. you, and your 20 years have research of monkeypox and that democratic republic of the congo. what have you discovered about the disease that needs to be understood immediately and without mistakes or confusion? well, arthel, thank you for having me. yes i've been working on monkeypox for two decades in the democratic republic of congo. i can tell you we know a lot about monkeypox in the context of low resource settings, places like drc. we really have to be humble but we know about house virus is going to be spreading it with the potential is for global

spread. in a high resource setting. what you're seeing now is the virus is spreading quickly with very close person-to-person contact. but the virus can spread in a variety of different ways when we spread it we call fomite. if you have been an adamant object up in contaminant sheets, towels, clothing, can be spread person-to-person. as a result we need to be careful we need to understand how it is spreading, how quickly it is spreading many situational awareness really, really good testing really good case definition so clinicians can understand that we will have much more situational awareness. arthel: summary follow-up to that. first of all the they would need to be humble but you're one of the foremost experts on this virus. so i appreciate that as you said we are still learning even though you had two decades of studying. that is important that you said that. and also something you said it

clothing, those things. then someone else is in contact can get it. there's a variety of ways it can spread which makes sense you'll see it not stay in community spreading it right now, it will spread everywhere. i've said this before infection anywhere is infection potentially anywhere. viruses never stay in one community. we all live together there's a lot of travel, there's a lot of trade there's lot of mobility. so that is probably what we will see. arthel: vaccine doses are different for children people of different ages. how does this compound the production and distribution of monkeypox vaccines? looks well, what we know is a vaccines against poxvirus smallpox in particular, protect also against a monkeypox but have several available. the first of which is a vaccine institute dose of vaccine. we have very small stocks of it at present for other their orders for a lot more. that is going to be available -- more and more of this vaccine.

there are more vaccines just a vaccine for smallpox but could also protect against monkeypox. there may be some discussion using fat vaccine as well. but there are vaccines that are very effective in terms of reducing the potential for infection onboard spread. arthel: await for cdc guidelines when they are available, who should get them, et cetera. no viruses that once never or rarely traveled to america, now seemed to be spreading here. is this the new normal? or maybe it was my question hyperbolic? was i think we are in a new age of travel, trade, population mobility. we also population continued to expand. we can anticipate we will see more viruses moving from one place to another.
