senator schumer. this is very arcane and americans will not be paying attention to anything other than what they're paying at the grocery store. which are outrageous numbers, and which won't bode well for democrats in the fall. >> carley: what you think about what the fed announced yesterday and will it work in fighting inflation? >> well, we need a lot more your cup here is writes about one percentage point a month. the fed is moving, but it's moving too slowly. that in itself won't stop all the problems. in this period, its things like food prices and energy supplies in the administration has ignored some of those problems, the food crisis, agriculture. with regard to energy, concerning domestic energy production, restricting refineries in some form is not a good way to put more gasoline on

the street. he can release the strategic petroleum reserve all you want, but it's not a large amount and if you don't have someplace to refine the all, what good is it? you can put crude oil in your gas tank. >> todd: before we get into the white house shenanigans on how you define a recession, i want to go on the peter morici definition of recession, which appears the actual one, what reality is. peter, do you think, based upon the report that is coming out today, that we will be deemed to be in a recession? >> come people will call it that if we get a negative gdp print. whether we get one or not, we'll just have to see. and forecasting a positive point of 3%. but that's not much. the reality is that the technical definition of a recession is a broad-based decline in economic activity that last more than several months back of the official scorekeeper is the national bureau of economic research, which is a private body and has eight people on the committee and the look at six variables

that are published on a monthly basis. gdp is not one of. it happens to be that if you get a recession, you often get to negative gdp points, but that in itself is not an indicator. the number to watch with regard to this is the jobs report next week. if the jobs report tanks, then i think they will say were in a recession. but you know, these guys are a political. they really don't want to get involved in the election. their public letter recession, but they'll do it next december. >> carley: yeah, i -- that's a great point because -- yeah, and what the white house is saying is that there is more to the definition of a recession than just two quarters of negative growth, and they do include the labor market in the definition. take a listen to what they have been saying over the past few

days. watch this. >> at the technical definition is to quarters of contraction, you're saying there's not a recession? >> it's not the technical definition. >> the technical definition, it's not a recession because the technical definition considers a much broader spectrum of it a point because because that is not the actual definition of a recession. it is a significant contractionary period over a few months. >> carley: yeah, so the atlanta said estimating the second quarter with a front by 1.2%. whatever the numbers, what does this mean for the american people when it comes out today? take a while what it means that the economy slowing, the red-hot job market is going away, it's going to be more difficult to sell your home, especially if you bought it in the last few years at a very high price. my feeling is americans are going to feel pain. i don't think that americans really want to sit around and listen to me or the other economist talk about what is a recession.
