all those visits despite the president's claim. the "new york post." the business partner called joe biden the big guy in a panicked message to hunter after the bombshell lap taupe story broke. ted cruz says enough is enough. >> this guy, how many films has he made of himself committing multiple felonies? i have to sai, jesse, if you put out a film with you with a pile of crack and prostitutes, somebody would come knocking on your door and they would prosecute you. but if daddy lives at 1600 pennsylvania avenue, apparently the criminal laws do not apply and it is deeply corrosive to our system of justice. >> griff jenkins is live in washington >> good morning, dagen. top news for hunter biden on multiple fronts. the "new york post" headline

8:06 am
>> we have resilient consumers who are continuing to spend and businesses continuing to invest. we're in a transition, no doubt. >> it is important in these reports to ask how are american households doing? they are facing real head winds from inflation, no question. they are also facing some tail winds. strong job market, low unemployment, so a nuanced story. one we expected. >> yesterday the federal reserve trying to tame raging inflation. the central back hiking interest rates 0.75% points. the first back-to-back hike of its kind and size in 40 years. charles payne coast of making money on fox business. economy sagging, inflation raging and american people in pain. >> the white house is hurting

getting crushed at this very moment and we need real answers. no more public relations. except what is happening so we can deal with it. >> kevin hassett said stop the propaganda and the white house is down playing it. fed chief jay powell said this. >> the fed doesn't make a judgment on that. we don't say there is now a recession and that kind of thing. if you think about what a recession really is, a broad based decline across many industries that sustain for more than a couple of months. what we have right now doesn't seem like that. >> the clown car of spin is chock full of them. listen to this. >> how worried should americans be that we could be in a recession? >> president biden: we're not in a recession.
8:09 am
>> this is not an economy that's in relegs. >> we're not in a recession or pre-recession at this time. >> the data over the second quarter is not consistent with an economy in recession. >> the evidence is strong we're not in a recessionary period. >> if things are going so great, why is it white house officials are trying to redefine recession? >> we are not redefining recession. >> a headline says this quote, the biden administration appears to be preparing for a recession or rather for news of one rather than tackling the underlying economic problem. the white house is playing word games. i call it a sentence ghoul ash that they keep putting together. >> it's unfortunate. one of the clicks someone said the second quarter data doesn't suggest we're in a recession. it actually suggests we're in a depression. new home sales came out two

8:11 am
republicans signed onto it, and then this manchin/schumer spending package, you combine those two it is more than $700 billion. i'm being conservative. $700 billion in additional spending. what the democrats and some republicans are doing is spending money at a time which makes the fight against inflation harder for the federal reserve and which will exacerbate this recession that we are already in. >> you know, i have to tell you, looks like mitch mcconnell got played big time. all these republicans who went in thinking okay, we can vote on corporate welfare because reconciliation is off the table. tax hikes are off the table. less than 24 hours after they said okay to that we get senator manchin making this flip-flop. you wonder how much of this was already orchestrated but they look dumb now the republicans who voetd for this. and i have to tell you, it

prc. that's absolutely the wrong strategy. haven't we learned a major lesson here from russia, who has desired to take control of ukraine saying it is a part of russia and have advertised that for years, and we didn't do much to deter them from that. we have president xi saying much the same thing, taiwan is an historic part of china and he has said time and time again we will take it by force if necessary. and what we need to do is put in the region the military capacity to deter him from that and that capacity has eroded over the years and also be willing to confront them and stand up to their behavior and their rhetoric in general. we've got to put those cards on the table and hopefully the president has done that in his last two-hour talk with president xi. >> the home of a pandemic that

this is not a good trade. not the right path forward. >> what do you say, general? >> when you look at this first of all i give the biden administration credit for trying to work a deal with the russians to get our two citizens home as soon as possible. i think when you look at this, the problem is not so much the swap but who we're swapping. we have an 80-year history with the soviet union going back to the 50s and russia through the 90s of exchanging prisoner swaps. usually spy for spy has been our history. it changed a little bit. in april we got a journalist back and gave them a pilot who was a drug dealer arrested in the united states. trump administration swapped a graduate student on a baseless charge in iran for somebody in the united states, an iranian who was committing sanction violations. so we've done swaps before.

let me finish. by the way, your lips to god's ears and joe biden running again. on the inflation piece now they will spend another half trillion. it will make inflation worse. everything they are coming up with is making it harder for joe lunch bucket to do what he needs to take care of himself and his family. >> or jane lunch bucket. jose, i will split the difference. one on the schumer/manchin bill, a billion dollars for electric garbage trucks and buses, a billion. but matt schlapp on the other hand what about that semi conductor enrichment bill. 17 republicans signed onto that in the senate and sent it to the house. you want to talk about spending mistakes. some of those republicans are part of the problem. >> that's right. let me tell you, when we get our majorities, dagen, the republican party for the first time -- they will lose the

people. >> republicans try to play the game that they are anti-deficit. donald trump added to deficit more than barack obama did. all you guys did was print money which is why we have the inflation we have today. we had the pandemic and had to do it. don't try to point fingers and say all the democrats want to do is spend money. that's all you did for four years. >> you and i will get along great. i criticize republicans more than they like and they spend way too much money. it's on the wrong side of history and economics. >> let me add this the federal reserve $2 trillion spending bill from president biden last year, the federal reserve juicing inflation and joe biden renominated jay powell to that job. so mistake.

nancy pelosi meantime her husband selling up to $5 million worth of computer chip stocks, chips like the chip bill taking a loss of more than $341,000. the move comes as the house speaker faced questions about the timing of some of her husband's stock purchases. speaker pelosi's spoke person said mr. pelosi decided to sell the shares at a loss. interesting timing here. pelosi's office confirming that a stock ban proposal for lawmakers and their spouses will be introduced to get a vote in september. matt, to you first on this. paul pell oh -- pelosi trades options which is gambling. why was it allowed to go on as long as it did, matt? >> he is a risky driver and risky investors. the bottom line is this. we had the bad economic policy.

now you have the culture of corruption with paul pelosi and the biden family, hunter biden, joe biden's brother. this spells nothing but trouble. merrick garland, where are you on democratic wrongdoing? you are silent. >> it is hard to prove it at the federal level. i covered those cases. final word, jose. the ban on trading stocks, good idea? >> it's a great idea. we should not allow insider trading from any party. we had a former member of congress get accused for doing the same thing, a republican. both democrats and republicans should be investigated and it should not be allowed. >> you can own mutual funds. no reason there should be this conflict and it is being kind among republicans and democrats. jose aristimuno and matt schlapp, both of you great to
