the press building dueling speeches. donald trump returning for the first time since leaving the white house. mike pence tried to distance himself from his former boss. >> i don't know that the president and i differ on issues , but we may differ on focus. >> i ran for president and i won never forget everything this corrupt establishment is doing to me is all about preserving the power control over the american people. they want to damage you in any form, but they really want to damage me so i can no longer go back to work for you. >> bringing up the same theme of

january 6, the journal of consensus is how can he be donald trump who paid him as the villain of january 6? >> >> i think it is under reported is the fact that republican elites are trying to depose their king. you saw rupert murdoch editorial pages in the wall street journal and you sell them in the new york post saying trump is unfit for office. you saw fox news not covering his press conference live. that lack of coverage by establishments is a signal that they are trying to depose their king. you see that it is shifting, simultaneous that the shift of opinion on the president. while he still remains a top and the leader of the republican party, it is starting to shift and you're starting to see that

establishment that he is talking about try to perhaps move him off that reality stage. >> the medium they play a role in that. trump spoke for 90 minutes. he stuck to the script for about the first third period then he sent the stolen election about i won twice bringing up 2020. the corrupt establishment is trying to stop me from running again. that did not get rave reviews from the media. >> let's assume for the moment that i agree with donald trumbull most likely be running for president. i don't think the best path towards victory is to relitigate 2020. focus on the issues that i just highlighted that he highlighted almost every speech. as i listened to laura, and i think about how this is already being framed, when the press is

concerned, 2020 did not happen. it reminds me of 2016. the establishment does not like donald trump, the elite doesn't want donald trump. look at all the negative coverage of donald trump. we have seemingly no ability. you know what, maybe we just have no desire to learn the lessons of the past. >> 2016, of course everyone said hillary was going to wind down to the last minute. none of the three major news networks carried donald trump's speech live. is there message there? i've been saying for weeks the press seem determined to knock out both trump and biden by saying they are growing sentiment in their parties and these polls showing that neither one should run in 2024. >> fox not covering it was more of a departure for the

consistency of their coverage for donald trump. there is this other sort of shadow in the room. mike pence was the subject of timely news in the january 6 investigation. both in terms of trump knowing he was in danger and also in terms that he was taking action when trump was not on that day. as will said, he is in a very precarious position with the republican base. it is difficult for him to navigate. this challenge on the republican side where you see the base in one position and the establishment and the other. the only person right now with joe biden's poll numbers that he beats in 2024 just hop vince to be the presumptive nominee for the republicans. that is why you see conservatives trying to figure out how to move donald trump off

the stage. >> is the press underplaying donald trump as the dominant figure in the republican party? even if ron desantis and others decide to challenge him in the primary. trump is extremely likely to win the nomination. possibly multiple people challenging him. >> are they underplaying him? i am not a huge wwe fan so i cannot come up with the perfect analogy of a character to compare this to. he will continue to be the star of the show. they may say he will lose, they may say or provide him negative coverage and that may qualify as underplaying him, but they will give him all of the attention in the world. i think everyone understands the popularity of donald trump

within the republican base. you only have to look shallow deep to find a pole that he had 85% favorability or whatever it may be that he has a runaway favorite for the republican contender for president. >> he is a former president. sniping from the sidelines. laura, the vast majority of journalists, it is clear they don't want to see trump back in the white house. is there an effort to deprive him of oxygen to boost the chances of another republican nominee? >> i think the republicans would like to see that happen. his viability is in question even though we know he defies political gravity, allegedly. when you have the growth of not just for, but five, six years by the time we get to the election, i do think, you see this in

republican focus groups, a lot of folks that kinda want to see him move offstage because he is a liability. i think those are things that journalists are trying to digest >> the answer in recent weeks is a lot. he has very good at generating coverage, as we say. we have a minute left. the fact that there is so much trump, trump, trump, does that serve as a distraction from what president biden is actually doing or trying to do in his political woes? >> absolutely. >> it will be a distraction. by design it is a distraction. by design it will be a ratings boost. by design all the focus will be on trump.

>> i talk about this in the book. when you are in the middle of a crisis, there is war that takes over. while we were going through it, how do i get him through it, not how should i be helping to get him through it. by that time it was becoming clear he was in a very tight spot. i am a loyal person. i am not one of those cut and run soulless people that you see in politics. it did not feel right just to et uncomfortable. >> good news, gang. the report would be a rehash. diary of a psychopath. he wanted to do a video montage of him kissing people of all kinds. you said governor you should not do this unless you want to be mocked on late-night shows.

a female state trooper who said he touched her inappropriately. >> there is no path for you. it was time for him to resign. i certainly was not alone and that assessment. >> he said that was it. no new allegations. >> everyone around him did. that is why we felt that way. i am not alone when i say that my stomach dropped when that came out. one week earlier he said nothing new would be coming out. the only thing he could find was he should fight resigning his former president bill clinton. >> the other option was unfathomable. just another sucker. for all your political savvy --

>> that was one of the hardest parts of writing this book. it was right after my father had passed away. i am processing all of these different things at once. also processing a little bit of the grief of the cuomo situation. there was a great tragedy element to it. i do consider myself a savvy person. i realize that i had equal weighted loyalty. my loyalty had blinded me and my judgment during this situation. howie: a long-ago episode where you became tabloid fire. photos suggested you had a relationship with eliot spitzer who had resigned as governor

after admitting patronizing prostitutes. you admit that you knew from the beginning that our relationship would be a big tabloid story when it became public. why go there? why put this in the book. >> it was very much intertwined with my professional life. a lot of the mistakes that i made in my personal life did lead over until my professional life. my decision to date a controversial former governor led to me getting fired. i'm not sure the mayor could get away with that today. i wanted to share this story with people and i wanted to get them perspective on an experience that a lot of people don't have. what it feels like to be in a tabloid scandal. people shun you. also, how you handle it.

i am a pr person and i thought i could handle it all myself. i was wrong. it taught me the importance of giving up control and relying on other people helping me control the narrative. howie: a presidential campaign. fox, fox town halls. you write say you are going to a or the largest cable news audience in america because you are so politically pure is the equivalent of burying your head in the sand. here you are on fox. why is that a tough sell? >> i think that there are a few things. across all demographic groups. blacks, whites, hispanics. there is this sort of industry

on the left that is devoted to tearing down fox and saying any democrat that goes on that is complicit. the opinion hosts here on the network, and my opinion. for us, it was really important. a massive audience. when he went on the first fox news town hall in may 19, an audience of 1.1 million people. five times what he got in any of the cnn town halls. the next day you see a ton of secondary coverage. it was in the new york times. washington coast. people magazine. you get the point. it is disrespectful to tell an audience that they are not worth your time. you will not talk to them. what does that say about the leader you are in the president you will be? >> thank you for joining us.

howie: the league first to the washington post and then the new york times at the biden justice department is investigating the role of trying to overturn the election has been a bombshell.

>> how would it look if joe biden's attorney general indicted donald trump who would be running against joe biden for president? >> it would look really bad. winning the presidency to million and millions of americans. i don't know, the map seems pretty clear. many of us feel they should have taken this month ago. >> covering the white house for fox news. it is pretty clear that many in the media are rooting for the justice department to bring criminal charges against donald trump or demanding. aren't these some of the same people that loudly complained when he pressured his attorneys general. >> just a few headlines. trump indictment the only option

it goes on and on and on. indictment expected. what they are telling you is they will do anything. jimmy the game to somehow impress upon the attorney general to do something. i think that that is sort of the medias perspective. maybe it is a good idea. i think at the end of the day -- >> does not rule it out. everybody has the headline. will you take on anybody including the president? we will pursue without your favorite. >> what did you make of president biden doing this blistering video? he usually tries to dismiss with a one line answer. >> what i thought was interesting is this lays the groundwork. a danger to democracy. you've heard them say this

before. putting the president himself out there against his potential future opponent again. speaking to their concerns. the truth is, the media certainly recognizes this. this is a weekend president right now. it is also coming from inside the house. they don't want him to run. let's get him out there. let's make sure we are making sure people understand this man believes, the president believes that donald trump is a monster. >> clearly it adds. trump trump supporters being more sympathetic? the justice department taking him down. >> a huge mistake if he has indicted for just that reason. if you do that, you make it as if you are saying that. now it looks as if it is political.

if it walks like a duck and? like a duck, it is a duck. it may not be a positive -- >> let's move to trump. he may sue cnn unless the network apologizes for defaming him over his election charges. if he files it, is it likely to go anywhere? asking that they retract statements like the big lie. i read the document. a lot of it as exhibit. they are trying to draw this distinction between how cnn characterizes president trump versus other people that make claims of election malfeasance. stacy abrams, for example. we have seen him threaten lawsuits before. nancy pelosi, adam schiff, people that work on his team.

i just don't know if this goes anywhere. he rarely follows through. i think it's a pretty good chance that it would not go very far. >> in the filing, cnn accusing him of lying boating activity in several key states. it does not have to be true, he does not have to prove it, if he believes it, i just think that that is interesting. >> that is a great way to put it. an interesting way to frame it. i don't think this goes very far. >> of course, if he does sue cnn, what is going to happen? >> we will go crazy about it,

town for not agreeing to more the biden programs along the way. i was quite surprised by the way it was covered. howie: republicans are ripping the deal. mitch mcconnell says, he just help biden pass the chips act. the republicans are posting it in the house. they just voted to approve it in the senate. should the press point out they are going against him of the bills they supported because they are to off at the democratic tax pics? >> they should point that out, but here is why they won't. as we get closer to the midterm elections, what if anything can be done to solidify the victories. i say what can be done to solidify meaning that the press in general like to see these things move forward. sometimes, sometimes, i would

argue fairly often, the argument about why it did not happen is a bigger story. >> well, you know, taking a huge victory lap on this one. not sure they have the votes to pass this through reconciliation studying the bill, she has concerns. it is surprising to me that without having all the votes locked up that it will look like a big setback if it does not pass. >> real concerns among democrats here in washington that cinema may prove -- for good reason. not just a minimum tax, i think there are other concerns about the way this was done. often it is the process that can trip you up. i think one of her handler said how did this come out in the press that she finds out about this particular deal? sometimes people get prickly if they are not in on the ground floor. >> i could not tell anybody or i
