>> tensions escalating between china and taiwan on the heels of the house speaker's high-stakes visit. i'm emily compagno here with my cohost harris faulkner and kayleigh mcenany and also joining us today shannon bream and joe concha. just as nancy pelosi headed out of taiwan, dozens of chinese warplanes moved in. the fighter jets, including 16 russian-made jets entering taiwan's air defenses own. type a is making it clear it will not shy away from a fight.
9:01 am
tomorrow they could see what they are really applicants. that's when china's armed forces begin its largest military drills and more than a quarter of century. for two days of live fire exercises in six nodes around taiwan. the actions that come within miles of the disputed islands coast, essentially blockading trade and violating taiwan's nautical linear spaces. at the same time the uss ronald reagan aircraft carrier strike groups in the region of the u.s. is taking part in joint military drills with indonesia, australia, japan, and singapore. all this as washington warns china not to turn this into a crisis. shannon, what we need to know? >> shannon: i was talking with michael pillsbury. we know him as one of the most foremost authorities on china and he said this is kind of a very dangerous period especially when you have these drills and exercises going on. not that they themselves, they are provocative.
9:02 am
there's always this chance of a mistake when you have these forces. tensions are high and you can't remember president xi is up for reelection very soon and so he's got to flex his muscles and not look like he's being pushed around by the speaker of the house or by the biden administration so he's really going to push some of what's happening there. also think about the fact that there's a bigger picture after this visit talking about china, russia, and iran. they are communicating and think about putin. the only two places he has gone since the incursion on the war against ukraine has been to these other very dangerous nations. what if they all decided they want to gang up on the u.s.? we are not in the best position militarily and the world is a very dangerous place in these weeks and months after the visit as we watch this play out. >> emily: shannon just laid out the high-stakes and the variables in the landscape of our current leadership in the white house. >> kayleigh: you're exactly right to frame it that way.
9:03 am
it didn't happen in isolation. it didn't happen in a vacuum. it happened because of a weak commander in chief. look at north korea, you can name any number of countries. afghanistan. not if that happened in isolation. it happened because of concrete decision-making. i would argue the invasion of ukraine have been on watch for a reason. senator tom cotton has a fantastic op-ed on foxnews.com. everyone should take a look at it. he talks about this point exactly. he made the point that he traveled to taiwan with the late senator mccain, one of the highest ranking members of the senate, former g.o.p. nominee. none of this happened when he went with the late senator mccain. he also points out that under president trump, he sent cabinet members to taiwan. none of this happened. why is it happening now? in september president biden was asked about nancy pelosi going and he said the military thinks it's not a good idea right now but i don't know what the status of it is.
9:04 am
that said everything that xi jinping needed to hear. weakness from a commander in chief who just doesn't exhibit strength. >> emily: you are such a compelling interview with kevin mccarthy. he said president xi thinks he has influence over the white house because biden is weak about it, we have a clip we will play from the interview. >> the biden administration has it wrong. they stayed silent. they should've had a very strong statement to the speaker of the house were members of congress can go to any country they want to in china is not graded dictate anti-american where they can travel. we have a real weakness in this white house. the white house wouldn't back up the speaker going to taiwan. it gave president xi of china to think he had influence over the president because he was weak about it. america should always speak with one voice, especially with the idea that china cannot dictate to americans where they're going to go. >> harris: i pointed out to
9:05 am
leader mccarthy that he gave the exact words that a president should say. the pushback i have gotten from democrats when they have pressed on this issue, why wouldn't the president be talking, they keep telling me, what would he see exactly it wouldn't have made this a bigger thing. what potentially made it a bigger thing is that he wouldn't back somebody who is in line to the white house. that just seems weird, right? it's like if one of the student back each other. the other problem was that the words that needed to be spoken were a shout out to all of those countries that you mentioned we can go anywhere we want. i don't know how many people want to hop over to iran, right? but i do believe wholeheartedly that those were the words that if china had heard them and even general keane said you have heard others say it, what china needed to hear, china didn't hear that's why we're in this situation. if those words have been the
9:06 am
words -- they would never have anything to say about any place we went. we went to ukraine. i really don't get it. when newt gingrich went in 1997 he was the last speaker of the house to go. didn't see any of this. >> emily: i can't help but thinking that the burke has been getting progressively louder and i wonder about the bite. for far too long we as americans have seen that right also growing larger. we have seen their intellectual property theft getting upwards of $60 billion per year in terms of losses. we have seen physical breaches, dozens and dozens of prosecutions by the doj of spies in the country. that is the tip of the iceberg with china's direct and indirect attacks on our sovereignty and stability. now here, a successor in line to the president is in taiwan and they are running pretty frightening military drills. what should we make of that as
9:07 am
americans? >> you talk about the park getting bigger and the bite is getting bigger and now you have chinese state media saying that we will shoot down the house speaker's plane if she enters that airspace, right? we get no support from the white house thank you not going to do any such thing. our leaders can go where they want to go and from a media perspective, the world is turned up side down. msnbc and cnn do not know what to do with his because republicans were the ones who are full-throated leasing we support the house speaker going there and democrats he almost don't hear anything from so republicans saying no, nancy pelosi and democrats saying i don't want to talk about it, we are in a weird place. >> they would know what to do if this was kevin mccarthy. you wouldn't hear silence. >> shannon: funny to hear "the new york times" have an opinion piece saying that she shouldn't do this. the weirdest collision of people
9:08 am
saying go forward, do it and though saying that we don't support the speaker. it is a head-scratcher. >> harris: some of these outlets. some have been laptop deniers, as i call them. i brought this up with leader mccarthy and i think it's inbounds. we don't have access to the president for a sit down currently to ask him, shannon, but i would want to at least ask, what is your relationship with china through your son? we know they were shady business dealings. the laptop was definitely his. do you have anything to say this point because you've been so silent when it comes to the only woman to ever hold the position is house speaker and she's had a toy and she is party. >> shannon: there's a good political upside. he takes the week on china -- saying how tough we are on china. >> harris: has it pertains to the laptop, russia, ukraine,

i know that intersection well, and i know this courthouse well so the thought that he blasted across it and then was t-boned by this jeep, thank god that driver remembered that there was another passenger in the car and didn't suffer worse injuries but it's simply a misdemeanor. we have entered the plea through his attorney of not guilty. certainly his dac says differently. >> harris: blood-alcohol. >> emily: one of the misdemeanor charges. >> harris: shannon, what about the judge swap last night. >> shannon: trying to find out more about who the judges were. one judge bowed out yesterday. we don't know. maybe that person had a conflict. may be there was a connection to the pelosi family they felt like it was better to hand it over to another judge. but what do we know about the new judge? do they have potential conflicts? as we talked about during the commercial, we can talk about --

9:18 am
it speaks to me that the level of elitism, i would've touch. that is supposed to get him out of a serious wreck? >> harris: for all we know, it has worked before. i want to get to this quickly. the napa county d.a. moments ago spoke on her decision to charge paul pelosi with that misdemeanor. we have what emily was talking about. let's watch. >> can you walk us through the decision to charge mr. pelosi with a misdemeanor after you learned about the seriousness of the crash? >> we evaluated the matter, interviewed the victim, and compared it to other similarly situated cases in the kinds of injuries people present, historically we have filed those matters as misdemeanors. >> that underscores the point in the topic of conflict of interest. it's important to know that neither party raised the vehicle
