this inflation reduction act would have minimal impact on inflation. and yesterday on one of the sunday shows, chris coons the u.s. senator from delaware said we might not see the impact on inflation in the first year or two. so, in other words, the democrats passed the inflation reduction act to help them with november. really it should be the midded term election rescue act. they will try to say look what we did for you. isn't it great? >> ainsley: it was build back better and now republicans calling it the social spending and taxation bill. the democrats wants you to believe's the inflation reduction act. every outside expert says if it does help it won't help for years. they are not expecting it to. and senator john kennedy who is always so colorful with his soundbites. is he talking about how we are in the middle of a recession. they want to tax you more money. they want to increase your taxes and they want to spend this exorbitant amount of money when we are in the middle of a really hard time for our country.

look at the average if we are heading on the right track 73% of americans say we are on the wrong track. that shows you whether the american people. >> eggs are up 33%. ground beef up 9.7%. poultry is up 17.3%. and in the middle of all of this, the american people trying to get the american congress to understand their pain, and they double down with things that are only going to make it worse. >> steve: you know, lawrence, we heard -- we have heard from the white house over the last week or two, they go look, gas prices are way down. and our white house correspondent last week said so you guys are -- why is the president bragging about that? it's still, you know, over $4 a gallon. a lot over a dollar higher than it was when joe biden took office. but, what you have to -- and i mentioned this before. the reason the price of gas has nothing to do with joe biden. forget about the strategic oil

reserve releasing a million gallons a day until the midterms. it's all about supply and demand. people cannot afford to pay the $4 a gallon. so they're making choice. do you know what? i'm not going to have to drive twice day to see my mom or something like that. i'm not going to get in the car. and we are not going to do this or that. everybody is making choices because gas is so high. for them to take a bow over that's right, the high prices are forced you to drive last they are proud of that because obviously their green ways loves it less pollution. >> ainsley: look at the latest poll from abc ipsos. they say 69% of americans are saying that our economy is getting worse. that's almost two thirds. that's almost 70%. saying our economy is getting worse. 12% say it's getting better. i don't know hot 12% are. maybe they got a pay raise this year or something. 18% say it's staying the same. maybe they don't have cars they are not driving. they don't feel it every day. >> lawrence: this poll says despite what they call it the american people just aren't buying it at all.

and despite all that they say about this. they did all of this without a cbo score. they had the opportunity to see how this was going to impact the economy. the nonpartisans. sometimes i agree with the cbo and sometimes i don't agree with them. good when it comes to the politics of it all. they say they were going to pass it without getting that cbo score. the political parties do you trust better job of handling the economy? 34% of americans say they trust republicans and only 25% trust the democrats right now. >> ainsley: republicans are warning that this could come back to bite them in november. because they are spending so much money. it's not going to do anything to help inflation over the next few years. >> steve: you know, after joe manchin negotiated in secret with chuck schumer, all eyes were suddenly on kyrsten sinema and what was she able to do? she was able to bounce the carried interest provision. she got them to take that out. even though joe manchin had said

this is central to all of the suggestions i'm making. but, chuck schumer took it out. you know, without a second thought because obviously that was the one thing they were going to sacrifice. and what this means now going forward is democrats can continue to hit up the private equity firms in new york city and l.a. for campaign donations. and chuck schumer can say look what i did. it was in there. ultimately did not pass with it if it passes through the house. and so they can continue to have their hand out and get money from them. >> ainsley: worried about small businesses and how this is going to affect american manufacturing. john thune did slip an amendment in there during this vote-o-rama make sure that small companies who haven't made a profit of $1 billion who are being backed by some of these private equity companies because they can't afford to finance at all for their own companies. he put a protection in there to make sure that their corporate tax didn't go up to 15%. but bernie sanders.

mountain you underway in colorado springs following the shooting of a deputy. two officers were responding to the reports of gunfire when el paso county deputy andrew kerry was killed. authorities are now searching for 33-year-old john pat in connection with with a shooting. they say he is armed and dangerous. the president and first lady will meet with 'families in kentucky will to observe the deadly and historic flooding. rain continues to fall during cleanup efforts. president biden will meet with kentucky governor andy beshear. the biden administration visit comes after governor beshear declared a state of emergency in the commonwealth. 37 people have died in that flooding. the flight nightmare continues for many americans over the weekend. 1600 flights were canceled saturday and sunday alone. 14,582 flights were delayed in that time period. and then today, nearly 200 flights have already been canceled while more than 650

just a hardworking american. he might've come to the city for a better life and how he is forced to leave because he is cured by retaliation and scared about his own life, and it's terrific how he was treated here in new york after he was acting in self-defense. >> i mean, it is so sad, ainsley, and so much for the american dream, i guess. that is sort of what jose alba represents. this was a man who, as you just said, he came from another country legally into america, wanted a better life for himself and for his family, and he was pursuing the american dream when, of course, he was forced to defend himself, and then was charged with murder. second-degree murder. he was held at rikers island, and had it not been for a really intense pressure externally, he would probably still be standing trial for murder right now. but he felt so unsafe in new york, and i think this is the saddest part for new yorkers, because there was no guarantee that this was not going to happen to him again.

says republicans and about a quarter of the country says democrats. in "the wall street journal" this morning, regarding this bill, they write, "this bill picks winners and losers by writing into law unfair advantages for union labor, because it's going to raise project cost thanks unionized workers' far higher wages and benefits, which will be borne by utility ratepayers and taxpayers. this pitches that the wages and raises costs for companies." so the question "the wall street journal" asks is, how does this reduce inflation? >> ainsley: that is yet to be determined and it probably won't happen for a long time. and i don't think this will contribute to that. senator mike lee will come up later, about 30 minutes from now, to talk about this issue. stay tuned for that, and in the meantime we will talk about public safety and crime in new york city. a lot of police officers are leaving. even though we have 561 new police recruits that were sworn in earlier this month, we had

2100 sworn in officers that decided to retire or resign, and this is just since january of this year. as more than all of 2019. >> lawrence: typically, you are eligible for your pension about 20 years into your service. a lot of cops are saying, "you know what? we don't even need the pension. it's become too anti-cop in new york city. we want to go to another state." look at these numbers. this is 2021, about 1700 that have left the department. going back to 2022, it's about 2400 police officers about to leave. that is up to 42%. but this is a number that's really getting is right here, when it comes to the pension. 20 years, that is up 71%. these officers saying, "forget the pension, we're just going to leave it completely." to be one that seeks ordinary thing. historically new york city

police officers have probably saved into their 50s and 60s, not because they live in new york city, they love being part of the blue wall. but given crime and given the lack of respect, so many cops are saying it's just not worth it. "i put on my kevlar vest in the morning and i don't know if i'm coming home that night." for them to walk away, if you simply work for 20 years for new york city wearing the uniform, you get that particular pension. i've got a lot of friends down in florida in the law enforcement who used to work in new york. they put in 20 years here, then they go down there so they get paid from new york and then they get a new job, as well. >> ainsley: that tells you how sad it is. because no one is going to walk away from a whole lot of money that you are promised if you put in your 20 years unless you feel like e.r. safety and possibly your life is on the line. and that's how many of these men and women feel in law enforcement new york.

it's just not worth it. yeah, you walk away from thousands of dollars in the future, but you're going to walk away with your life. >> lawrence: they still have a heart for service, so they're not leaving the profession completely. they're going to florida. we talked to a detective earlier today and this is what he had to say. >> it doesn't surprise me. when you're working in an agency that doesn't support you, you are not getting the proper training to do your job effectively, you're not getting the equipment to do your job effectively, and you get in fights with the state like florida, the governor just past a freedom first budget giving bonuses for officers to come down there. you get everything from the weather to a lot of officers from agencies like the nypd. they have less than five years on, they are coming in and they start at a higher pay rate based on the previous years of service, so some of the officers are coming in and getting about a $30,000 pay raise, no state income tax, they get issued a

take-home police car. >> lawrence: you know it's interesting in there, steve? and you can see there's a sign right here in times square. >> steve: the department is running it. >> lawrence: they are running it here. it is not just about the money. i never thought about this before, but they get better equipment in florida and they get better vests. i mean, shouldn't all cops in every department getting the same quality of vests? >> steve: plus, if he just said, he makes a great recruiting pitch. you don't have to pay state taxes in florida, as well. in addition to your personal safety, keep in mind, here in new york i was reading a story about somebody being menaced and they called the cops, a store owner did, and said, "this person is causing a problem," and they said, "are they threatening violence against you?" and they said no, so they said, "i can't do anything." because here in new york so many cops' hands are tied by the

celebrating as they push that $739 billion spending bill to the u.s. senate yesterday afternoon. >> lawrence: not one republican including our next guest voted for it as they warn it'll make inflation worse while raising taxes. >> ainsley: g.o.p. senator mike lee sits on the senate joint economic committee and joins us now. good morning to you, senator. there are a lot of articles, "what's in a name?" because they are painting this as a bill to reduce inflation paid when really you have all these economists and experts saying that's absolutely false and that it won't do anything. >> yes. it's a terrible bill. they call it the inflation reduction act and this is the most orwellian name i think i have seen in the united states senate and the 12 years i've been here. look at what they are doing. they are increasing spending and raising taxes while you're in the middle of a recession, and while you're in the middle of rampant inflation. in my home state of utah, people were experiencing neither 50%

inflation relative to last year. with the result of that type of inflation, people pay 26 paychecks a year, it's as though the biden policies have consumed four of those 26 paychecks out of every year. that is appalling. it is doubly appalling that they would spend more and raise taxes in the middle of a recession while you're in inflation. >> steve: as you know, senator, we are coming up on election in november, and one of the big parts of this is it will allow medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices. if you were on the fixed income, if you are older, you'd love that regardless of your political party. >> you love how it sounds until he read the fine print, steve. when you read the fine print on this, at the end of the day this is going to lead to fewer life-saving and life-enhancing and extending medical cures and treatments. at the end of the day, price controls do not work. they've been tried everywhere.

price. because what happens in today's? they come back and say, "fine, we'll do it." >> steve: because people fall in love with a car and it's like, if i don't buy it now, it's going to go away. but they made more cars! >> let it walk away. there is no harm in letting the vehicle go away. find another one on auto trader or any one of those websites. it is so easy to do. if you're willing to travel to get the vehicle -- i've bought vehicles from all over the country and save thousands of dollars by simply going to another location. but you have to be willing to walk away, get a cup of coffee, walk away from the dealership and let them come back to you. >> and as you know, the news is that cars are in such short supply that they think, "i've got to get this win or else they'll be gone." you don't have to do that. there's plenty of cars out there right now. i've heard that the honda cr-v you can't find in california but you can walk into a dealership in new york, new york, and buy one. >> and you did the research for us. thank you very much very much.
