credited with finding a car that other dive teams somehow missed. >> that's right, john. adventures with purpose is a volunteer dive team that helps find missing people. they joined the search for keily rodni on friday and yesterday announced their divers had made this grim discovery in a lake that had been searched repeatedly by law enforcement officers because they said this lake is the last place that keily's cell phone had pinged in the early morning hours of august 7th, and it's near the campground where she was last seen at that graduation party, possibly intoxicated, according to some of her friends. the water in the lake was murky and with no new leads, scaled back the search effort there. but last night a car matching the description of keily's silver honda was pulled out of the water. authorities covering it up quickly with tarps out of respect for keily and her family because adventures with purpose had posted on its facebook page

we will carry it live on fox. a spokesperson said they hope to get answers to the questions they still have. john. >> john: we'll be watching for that. claudia, thank you. more coming up on this as well, sandra. >> sandra: indeed. devastating story. i had a chance to speak with the mother of the missing teen the friday before i left last week, john, and of course as all parents do with missing kids, they were holding out hope that she would eventually show up, and right now they are waiting in agony on the confirmation of whether or not that was indeed their daughter's remains. we'll have that update for our viewers and mark will react to it, 2:00 p.m. eastern time, news for our audience. we are less than 80 days until the midterm elections and americans are not happy. a poll found almost three-quarters of registered voters say the country is headed in the wrong direction, 26% believe president biden's tax and spending plans will make things better for them and their families.
10:05 am
polls come as the president is expected soon to announce a decision on whether to "cancel" student loan debt. a move critics point out would not actually cancel debt, but instead transfer costs to other americans. critics also question the timing, calling it an attempt to buy off younger voters for the midterm elections. fox team coverage now, hillary vaughn and charles payne are standing by, the president is vacationing in delaware. peter, how expensive is it to raise a child in the country considering how high inflation is. what are you hearing? >> peter: sandra, because baby food and toys and shoes cost so much more now, like everything, it is costing more than $310,000 to raise a kid born in 2015 through high school. that's 18,000 plus dollars a year, according to a brookings institution calculation.
10:06 am
9% more than two years ago, driven by the current inflation, but administration officials are out saying it's all good because gas is coming down. even though the energy secretary now says that may not last. >> if china opens up significantly after covid, there will be more pressure on demand, more pressure on demand means upward pressure on prices. so, we are watching what happens globally, but we are doing everything possible to try to stabilize supply and demand to keep the prices coming down. >> peter: a new nbc poll finds 35% of voters surveyed think america's best years lie ahead. 58% say the best are behind us. economy is a major drag right now. 68% surveyed say they think the u.s. is in a recession now, that means 68%, not buying the white house spin that there's no recession, just slow growth. >> we have people in tennessee

that drive 30 miles to work, 30 miles back home and they are making a choice whether they fill up the tank or fill up the grocery cart. too many different days each month. it is a strain. we have people trying to be first time home buyers and because of the impact of inflation, they can't do that. >> president biden remains here at his beach house on vacation. we don't know if we will see him between now and wednesday when he is set to return to the white house. sandra. >> sandra: ok, peter doocy live for us. thank you. john. >> john: we'll see what we see. meanwhile, president biden said he would make a decision on so-called loan forgiveness by the end of august, less than ten days away. supporters are in favor of not paying off the college debt, critics warn it could make historic inflation even worse. president is cutting it close to the deadline. >> he is, it's down to the wire.
10:08 am
the president keeping people in suspense waiting to find out whether or not they need to start making student loan payments starting september 1st. biden has just nine days to decide if he will keep this pause in place, but saying simply delaying payments until the end of the year would cost $20 billion. effectively wiping out the first six years of deficit reduction that was passed in the inflation reduction act. but the chair of the council of economic advisers is down playing any economic impact of delaying payments for borrowers. >> the impact on inflation will depend on -- we have to keep in context of the restart and this happens over time, so it's not a one hit shock to the economy like a stimulus would be. >> but jason furman disagrees it has 0 impact. tweeting this, if your claim is
10:09 am
student loan debt relief is not inflationary because it is happened instead of cancelling all interest payments for all borrowers for all time, you are replacing one inflation with another. the washington post reports the department of education is working on an idea called the fresh start initiative that would bring about 7.5 million borrowers who are behind on payments out of default, scrub their credit history of the incident and make them eligible to take out more loans. republicans are calling this idea crazy. virginia fox saying this in a statement, it's definition of insanity, and also wrong. if the individuals were unable to pay back their loans the first time they borrowed, how will giving them access to more debt help. student loan forgiveness overall would only benefit 13% of americans who have student loans but critics say it would cost all taxpayers who ultimately will be paying the price.
10:10 am
john. >> john: some folks are trying to say the taxpayers would not be on the hook for this. not sure where they learned that. hillary, thank you. sandra. >> sandra: nothing is free, somebody always has to pay for it. charles payne, you are always following the money. president wants to wipe out some student loan debt. who benefits the most from that? >> it's amazing that the most fortunate people in the country, college grads who over the course of their lifetime will make two times what a high school grad makes, three times what a high school dropout makes, they'll live longer, seven years longer than the average high school student, their kids will be less likely to be victims of crime, these are the most fortunate people, the people on the path to living the american dream. why the hell does biden keep -- sandra, they have child tax credits last year, they promoted it, always promote it, bring the little black kid up and say look what we are doing for child

these student loans forgiveness is $250 billion. so you are talking about wiping out whatever they wanted to tout that they were -- that they were lowering from the deficit, charles. >> and it will be inflationary. some people might have been saving money, ok, i have to pay back my student loan instead they will spend it in an environment they are trying to get people to stop. but as far as this so-called inflation reduction act, the most important thing to know, all the spending happens admittedly. assumed money, we don't know when it happens. when do you raise the army of 75,000 irs agents. >> sandra: the white house admits you will see prices go up in the short-term and barely go down. >> and barely go down is a hell of an assumption. >> sandra: the last topic here, the white house likes to say gas prices have come down, great. but it depends on how you look at it, because gas prices today

>> john: new power ranking
10:20 am
showing 28 house seats and five senate seats are considered toss-ups in november. the gop is expected to take the house but a smaller margin than previously expected. control of the senate remains up for grabs. mercedes and fox news analyst juan williams. put the power ranking on the screen so everybody can see the democrats are forecast to get about 187 seats, the republicans at this point minimum looks like 220. so could pick up between 2 and 30 seats but not the blood bath we are expecting, a net reduction of six seats, why the reduction. >> i think first of all, i think we have to wait until after labor day weekend to see where the campaigns fall, and i do think we could see -- we talked about between 25 to about 40 seats where the republicans could win.
10:21 am
a win is a win. republicans are in strong position to win the house of representatives so i don't see it as a reduction towards supporting the republican party, i think on the house side it seems definite we are going to have a strong win. >> a place we are seeing a lot of the movement is in the suburbs where suburban moms have been moving from being republican to being democrat. why have the democrats been able to claw back? >> obvious answer, the supreme court ruling ending constitutional rights for abortion in the country and we see the numbers are strong in terms of women. moreover, educated white suburban women to your point, john. but also at the moment, i think if mercedes and i were sitting here a month ago we would not be talking these terms, still red wave. now talking red ripple maybe, and -- >> john: 25 seats would be more of a wave, not a tsunami.
10:22 am
able to surf on that. >> previously we were thinking 50 maybe plus seats. and it's not only abortion, but you look at some of the good news the biden administration has had in recent weeks, gas prices have been going down, inflation stable, if not going down, and then you go on to like which side of the gun issue, very important issue for those suburban moms, and again and again looks like good news for the democrats. >> is that what's behind it? >> i think the parents are waking up, seeing the leftist on the radicalized curriculum, and i think that has actually shifted that swing voter over to the republican side. so while for democrats and suburban women, abortion rights issue, i do believe when it comes to the issues of the economy and on education and crime the republicans are in favor to win those voters.
10:23 am
and the republicans are very enthusiastic this time around. remember, the midterm election voter is very different than the presidential voter. why? not as many go out to vote, it's mostly the base and the republicans are more energized this time around. an we see a lot of intensity on the republican side, no question about that. the senate, mitch mcconnell said last week might not be so good for republicans. >> greater likely hood the house flips than the senate. senate are statewide, candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcomes. >> john: power ranking up so you can have a look here. five toss-up seats as we mention, where they stand right now, in arizona, kelly is up eight over blake masters at the moment in the fox news poll, and georgia, warnock, according to the atlanta journal constitution is up three, in nevada, cortez
10:24 am
mastro, and fedderman up in the poll which favors republicans, up four points over dr. oz. looks like a recipe for democratic control, 51-49. >> you have the senate candidates, many have never run for politics before, like a dr. oz, like blake masters, and so it is a big of an uphill battle for them. for dr. oz, he needs to solidify the republican voters, many are not on board with him. tough to go up with the incumbents, but it's very early on in the campaign, see how things shift after labor day and what ads are going to come out, and what the issues are going to be basically in control there which of course i think it's going to again be the economy, it's going to be inflation, be the pocket book issue. >> the key phrase mitch mcconnell uttered, candidate
10:25 am
quality has a lot to do with the outcome. the trump candidates are great at winning primaries, can they win in november. >> and mitch mcconnell would be your best guess on this, but i think what you see from the money, from how the money is being spent and the kind of blame game that's taking place between mcconnell and rick scott who is the head of the senate republican re-election committee, you see them now saying we spent money in the wrong places, we are having trouble and don't know what to do. i think that's a big, big flashing warning sign for republicans in the senate. >> john: less than 80 days to go, a run through november 8th. thanks for coming in. >> sandra: volunteer divers in california say they have found the body of missing teen keily rodni. now we wait a briefing top of the hour from the official investigators who have yet to confirm that. we'll see if that happened, top of the hour, see if they also have answers on how the search came to such a tragic end. mark will be here in moments on

win the senate outright in november. >> sandra: very interesting. i was gone over the past week, byron, it does not mean i did not keep up with your pieces in the washington examiner and you wrote about how biden is dragging down his party, his party down. you say there's been a surge of optimism among democrats lately when it comes to the midterm elections. short version of the thinking is you write, maybe we are not going to get clobbered after all, but much of their hope is likely in vain for one reason, president joe biden. can they be as strong as they hope if the president continues down the road of complete unpopularity? >> no, i don't think so. as a matter of fact, i think presidential job approval is one of the main indicators, predictors of how his party will do in midterm elections. and first of all, first term presidents usually lose seats in the house in their first midterms. almost always do. we have had a couple of exceptions, one was in 2002,
11:40 am
when the country was at wartime after september 11th with george w. bush, and 1998 during the lewinski scandal, clinton had a high approval rating. every other time in decades and decades the president's party loses seats, and especially when the president's job approval is low, below 50%. joe biden is about 41, 42% right now. that's a little better than it was a couple months or two ago when it got down to 37 or so. but still, that is really the range of job approval that leads to a big loss in midterm elections. >> sandra: and finally, can you give us your thoughts on the performance so far of perform president donald trump's picks how they are doing overall so
11:41 am
far, and what his influence will be on the republican party for the midterm elections. >> well, i think in a couple of races trump's picks are ahead in the polls, perhaps not as far ahead as they should be. j.d. vance is ahead in the polls in ohio. but some of the other ones are really struggling right now. herschel walker is struggling right now, dr. oz is struggling against john fedderman, who has not run an in-person campaign since may, and still oz is having a good bit of trouble there. so, you know, remember the test for trump, we all talked about how strongly his candidates did in republican primaries, and indeed that is the test. but the bigger test is, do they actually win office, and that's going to be the big thing and clearly if president trump's candidates do not help republicans win the senate, there are going to be a lot of
